Divination / Transfiguration / Charms / Conjuring & Summoning

Year (pick two): First (Second)

Biography:
Madeleine wasn’t born anything special, not really.

Her parents had met during the war, during some music event or other. Her mother was the performer and her father was working backstage and one thing led to another. They married a year or so later, perhaps rushing into things a little faster than they should have.

They had three kids in total. Lucas was the oldest, six years ahead of Madeleine, and had always been the studious, serious one, determined to get into medical school. Taylor came next, three years later, the more artistic of the three. Both impossibly talented in their own way.

And then there was Madeleine.

Her brothers were fond of saying that it was her fault that their family fell apart not long after she was born. If she’d just fought less, cried less, been less difficult, maybe their mum wouldn’t have left when she was two.

It wasn’t true, but that didn’t mean that it didn’t hurt. And to get back at them, Madeleine made sure that they hurt too. With her teeth when she was younger and her fists when the neighbour kid taught her to throw a proper punch.

It’s probably no surprise that she got into a lot of trouble in primary school. Living in the shadow of your talented older siblings is never easy, nor is the social stigma associated with being abandoned by a parent or being the kind of girl who would rather play in the dirt and throw punches. She’d only wanted to be special.

She got her wish the summer she was eleven, in the form of an envelope inviting her to a magic school far away. It hadn’t been the kind of special she was going for, but she was hardly going to complain. Lucas could be the best surgeon in the world, Taylor could be the best musician, and she was going to be the best witch of all time.

Heaven help anyone who stands in her way.

House Request:

Personality:
Madeleine is more angry than anything else. She doesn’t mean to be, it just happens a lot, always simmering beneath the surface, keeping her ready to throw a punch at any given moment. Sometimes she’s able to direct this into stubborn determination and focus, others not so much. It kind of just depends on what’s going on. But if you can look past the anger, want to talk books with her or go for a run or you just happen to be someone she decides to like, she’s actually decent company and one of the most loyal people you’ll ever meet.

Appearance:
Madeleine is average height for her age, though a bit on the scrawny side. Always the tomboy, she never quite took to the whole wizarding clothes thing, so unless you’re in class, you’re more likely to find her in jeans and t-shirts, both of which are probably covered in dirt and grime. Her hair is usually falling out of whatever it was tied back into that morning and she generally looks a bit unkempt. Don’t worry, she has probably showered that day, adventures just require getting your hands dirty.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

Madeleine’s foot hurt. It was her own fault for kicking the wall when she ruined her potion - again - but that didn’t make it feel any better. If anything, it made it feel worse. Now she was frustrated and sore.

So she was taking a walk. Which might not have been the best idea, given the whole walking on an injured foot thing and all, but exercise usually helped burn off some of the frustration. Running would be better, but with her luck, she'd just land herself in detention or something like that. It seemed this stupid school always had someone around to ruin her fun.

She was just starting to feel better when she heard a voice calling out. Not to her, unless someone was really screwing up her name. But she’d been down here a while and she knew for a fact that there was no one else around. So she might as well be talking to her.

She rounded the corner, eyes narrowed at the girl.

“Would you shut up?” she demanded. “Emma Birch obviously doesn’t want to talk to you or she wouldn’t have told you to find her in the dungeon!”

She planted her hands on her hips, all but daring this girl to start something.
