Biography:

Expectations. Everyone faced them; who you were depended on how you dealt with them. Zeke was the sort who only followed his own, because he was brave. Emilia knew what courage earned you in this family, anger and violence. Too vividly she remembered dabbing at her brother's split lip and wiping at the cut below his spectacularly-colored eye.

Emi wasn't brave, but she was fantastic at putting on a face. A young Southern pureblood witch was expected to smile, to simper, to exude each and every courtesy, and while at home she was as perfect as she could possibly be. Inside, she screamed at herself. If she was braver, she would be fighting at Zeke's side instead of watching Wyatt (for he didn't deserve to be called her father, mentally) squash his spirit. Somehow her oldest brother never blamed her for standing by, but the guilt was like acid eating at her soul.

Though control was hard to come by, Emi found it. How she fueled her body was her own decision, and mealtimes were a pleasure because she got away with hardly eating a thing. Usually Emilia steered the conversation, inquiring into Wyatt's affairs and her mother's newest fashions, giggling at Seth's humorless jokes, playing with Caroline and Natalie and Lilith. As the eldest daughter, Emilia was a well-polished jewel, and Zeke was the only one to notice that she did more pushing around on her plate than she did chewing.

School was different, but only by a small margin. Expectations didn't go away, no matter where she was, but she was allowed a bit of lenience. Still, she'd formed a habit at forming relationships on the superficial level, and those she was closest to still only saw the jovial, academic girl with the perfect life. Only around Zeke would she let her smile fall from her face, because he was the sole person she trusted to accept her unconditionally. They were close, similar even in appearance with dark hair and matching eyes.  And though she could never be as strong as him, her goal was to follow him into the Knight Society at Housing Day, on the basis of healing and alchemy, which satisfied her father because women had no place in politics or business anyway.

Expectations.

Sample Roleplay:

What were partner projects about anyway?

Simon wasn't a loner, but he loathed any type of assignment that required him to team up with anyone. In his book, the only truly trustworthy student was himself. So naturally, when he'd been instructed to team of with a classmate and turn in a research report on the Muggle-American Civil War, Simon had been rather disappointed.

The library that afternoon was deserted aside from Simon and his partner. Before them lay a plethora of textbooks. Wars: Old and New by Kevin Torvalt. When You Say Civil... by Emma Jean. Each book was old and worn even more than the last. In a way, it was almost impressive that the books had lasted this long and still been put to such good use. Simon figured that there weren't many things for which that could be said.

Simon leafed through a copy of Understanding America by Harvey Wires, sighing heavily as each page flipped over on top of itself. He wondered what the student next to him was thinking. He was thinking that this was a drag. These books were probably boring beyond belief, despite their interesting appearance. The library was stuffy from the heat outside. Finally growing too bored from the text, Simon slammed the book shut and sat upright.

"How about I write the essay and stuff? You can just put your name on it. Sound good?"[/i]

Sample Roleplay Response:

While Emi wouldn't call herself exceptionally intelligent, she demonstrated above-average work ethic. Her first year at Salem, she'd come home with one less-than-perfect mark and Wyatt made perfectly clear that he expected better. When the next year brought all Outstandings, she'd been given an expressionless nod. Emilia took two bites that supper.

As she read, she took notes, jotting down useful-sounding quotes and page numbers that she could refer to. It kept her eyes from tiring out, watching her hand form neat loops and lines in between skimming through Home of the Free: A Broken Family by Winona Q. Perneval.

The sharp snap of the closing book caused Emi to jump, her pen jolting into a scribble on her page. Wide brown eyes turned to Simon inquisitively and she took his frustrated words to heart. Seriously? After she'd done so much work, he wanted to take on the report himself?

Emi froze, feeling a small kick of rejection. She must have done something wrong. By reflex, her face split into a grin. "Sure, if that's what you want." With two fingers, she slid her parchment toward him. "Here are my notes, if you decide to use those." Another smile. "Let me know if there's something I can do."
