CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Jasper Cromwell
Gender: Male
Age: 60
Blood Status: Pureblood

Education:
Dropped out of Hogwarts at age 16.

Residence:
London

Occupation
Occult Shop owner

Do you plan to have a connection to a particular existing place (for example: the Ministry, Shrieking Shack) or to take over an existing shop in need of new management?
I absolutely wanted him to be the owner of a seedy occult shop in London. Particularly one that specialized in hard to get items, seeing as he’s a man of loose morals.

Requested Magic Levels:
Adult characters have 32 starting levels to distribute across these four categories (less levels can be used if you so desire, but no more than 32). The number of levels on the lowest ability must be at least half of the highest ability.

If you want levels above the usual 32 total, or a significantly uneven distribution of starting levels, please fill out and submit the Exceptional Levels special request form here.

  • Charms: 8
  • Divination: 12
  • Transfiguration: 6
  • Summoning: 6
Do you wish to be approved as a group with any other characters? If so who and for what IC reason?
Not really. I kind of want him to be someone who caters to everyone with his shop of seedy stuff, but isn’t necessarily affiliated with anyone in particular.

Please list any other characters you already have at the site:
None! This is my first baby. My first… 60 year old baby.

Biography: (300 words minimum.)
Jasper Cromwell was always a nuisance in school. The only subjects he really enjoyed were divination and herbology, and those were the only ones he ever really showed up for. He got in trouble often, but when his only family, his mother, passed away when he was 16, he decided to quit school altogether. It wasn’t a big loss for him really, as he seemed to live by his own rules anyway, and his mother wasn’t exactly the kindest woman, to put it lightly. He was also a bit of a ladies’ man in his youth, which only matured into a devilish charm as he got older.

Even when he was in school, Jasper had a talent for acquiring things that the students couldn’t get anywhere else. That was probably because most of the things he acquired weren’t allowed on school grounds. Most of his life after he left school was spent doing things out of survival, and somehow evading the law in the process. After much of his life had come and gone in such a manner, Jasper realized he had an interest in plants and potion reagents, but also a vast interest in oddities and mythologies. Jasper opened an occult shop to sell such things. A variety of animal bones, crystals, rare alchemy reagents, teas, special order potions, books on mythology, the occult, and witchcraft as it exists to muggles. Muggles will buy anything if you attach a good story to it. And witches and wizards would pay a good price if you had that one thing that they couldn’t get anywhere else. Let’s just say Jasper still has a reputation for acquiring things… and he’s usually ready and willing to oblige.

These days, Jasper mostly spends his days in his shop. Considering the rarity of having a serious customer, his ever-growing stock is a bit of a mystery. He either charges an obscene amount of money for his services or he knows how to make a little money on the side. He’s usually reading some new tome he got in or occasionally ogling the ladies who manage to find his shop. If someone is lucky (or unlucky) enough to find his seedy little shop in the back alleys of London, you’ll see what I mean…

Roleplay:
You come across one of these posts on the site. Please select one & reply as your character:

Option One -
Amelia Nixon was many things, but she was never a pushover reporter that people could just usher away with a busy shuffle past. She was dedicated and eager to cut to the very middle of the current political tensions because she was Amelia Nixon and her articles would most certainly become front page material.

“Sir, please! It’s for the Prophet, how do you feel-“

Another one brushed passed her, the shuffling busy masses making their way through Diagon Alley for the lunchtime rush. This had been the best possible time to get people, but none of them were giving her anything to go with.

Only momentarily discouraged, the short red headed lady took a seat on a nearby bench. Her quill resting in her left hand and her notepad ready in the opposite hand. Amelia pouted, tapping the quill against her leg as she scanned the waves of people for somebody - anybody - who looked like they had something to say.

She had been dreaming of her name in bold print, Amelia Nixon: The Source of Today’s Tomorrow. She had been dreaming of the larger office and the secretaries that would fetch her the morning coffee and fetch her anything she needed. The VIP interviews and the most exclusive press passes. But all Amelia had was a page seventeen piece on the rising number of frogs in London.

Hardened by a day of no success, the reporter stood up and started to trod off down the alley. A loose stone on the cobble path caught her heel, sending the distraught girl toppling down to the ground.

“Merlin’s fog watch, my heel is broken! Help!” she yelled as she tried desperately to recover her shoe frantically in the middle of the Diagon Alley moving crowds.

Option Two -
The snow had been falling steadily all morning and it didn't look like it was going to stop any time soon. Joshua Campbell scrunched his face up in a frown as he lifted his gaze to look to the sky. Snow. It really was quite a bother.

And it certainly didn't make it better that Diagon Alley seemed to be getting more and more crowded. Joshua sighed and pointed his wand at the large box that was currently placed on the doorstep of his shop. He had to get going. He had an order to deliver.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" The elderly man muttered and watched the box hover in the air for a moment. Honestly, did St. Mungo's really need that much tinsel? And with glitter of all things? He sighed again. If it hadn't been for the rather convincing stamp on the order, he would have been likely to believe it had been a prank by one of those orphaned rascals living up there.

Oh well, there was no point in waiting. Joshua deftly stirred the box down the doorstep and out onto the street, carefully levitating it above the heads of the crowd.

"Coming through! Coming through!" His voice sounded over the chatter of the crowd. "Keep out! Move ahead! Go on!" This was going way too slow. People were in the way and walking like they had all day! He huffed. Luckily the road was down hill.

"Coming through! Coming th--- arrrgh!" Joshua let out a loud shout as his feet suddenly slipped in the snow and sent him, the box, and several long strands of tinsel tumbling into the person who had been walking in front of him.

"For Merlin's sake!" Joshua muttered angrily as he hurried to his feet again, red and gold tinsel now decorating his black coat. "I am so sorry! This blasted snow!" He looked apologetic at the person he had crashed into.

Roleplay Response:
The snow drifted gently as if in slow motion. Jasper liked the colder months. There was something serene about them. He watched as a small, airy clump of snow landed on his scarf. It lingered there before it started to melt, and then it was gone. The man’s dark eyes shifted back to the crowd of people bustling through the streets. The fedora on his head shrouded his face a bit. That wasn’t his intention, but in this case, it was probably for the best.

There he was. The man he was waiting for was coming down the street, his arms full of tinsel and a parcel. Jasper’s eyes lingered on the parcel. He was a fair distance away, and at the rate he was shuffling along, there was a good two minutes before he even got close. The dark eyed wizard leaned against a brick wall. Perhaps he should write a book. He’d never written a song before. Perhaps, sonnets were more his style. With all this free time he could do any number of things, he thought. A cloud of vapor swirled from his nostrils in contrast with the cold air as he sighed. A moment or so passed as he watched the man meander down the street.

“Close enough…” he said under his breath. He pulled out a wand and, with the flick of his wrist, caused a small cup of water to fall to the frozen ground a few feet away. Pulling an identical parcel from the inside of his coat, he stepped away from the brick wall and began to walk. Jasper pretended not to notice the man as he walked until the man encountered his little booby trap. With a holler and more force than he’d expected, the man crashed into him, and they both fell to the ground along with everything they were both carrying.

“Oh, my goodness!” He shouted. A man slipping and falling in a crowded street was hardly going unnoticed, he might as well get a little acting out while he was there. He scrambled to his feet, being sure to help the man up and spew out as many apologies as he could in the process.
“Are you alright!?” he said, a little too loudly. He quickly grabbed the tinsel the man had dropped and handed it back to him theatrically enough to tangle it a bit. Jasper turned as the man fidgeted with the tinsel and picked up his own parcel and handed it to the man, being sure to claim the man’s parcel as his own.

“Are you sure you’re alright?” Jasper asked with a devilish grin.

Hi Jasper! Welcome to Hoggies!

Your application looks great so far! There are just a couple of things we'll need you to do before we can get you accepted.

First, in our site canon, Jasper's occupation would be considered unusual. So that means that you will either need to change his occupation, or submit a special request to the administrators for approval. The templates for special requests can be found here (just scroll down until you find the template for unusual occupations).

There are also a few instances in powerplay (which are defined in the site rules). First, you wrote:

This would be considered powerplay, as a pre-existing relationship has not been plotted out beforehand with the man's player. You could say that Jasper was waiting for a random target, and then decide that the other character is the perfect target.

With objects that are owned by someone else (or objects that we are handing back to others, we always need to attempt our actions to allow the other player to decide what happens. In this instance, you could say that Jasper attempted to hand the man the tinsel and package.

If you could make the changes and reply with your entire revisted application, then we can take another look. If you have questions, don't hesitate to PM me or another member of staff.
