Biography:
Maeve O’Ryan was someone that everyone admired. She had curly red hair and freckles, and a smile that could light up the room. Even at a young age, people looked up to her. She knew how to carry herself, and she wore her heart on her sleeve. Her parents were worried that one day that light that she’d been born with would be extinguished by either someone or a circumstance that would either end her life or make her miserable with the one that she had.

That is where Darren Byrne came in; older than her by ten years, he charmed Maeve because he saw what everyone else did. But he wasn’t smitten by her light like everyone else was – he saw her as the perfect piece of arm candy he could use to get his way. She thought it was true love, but he was never faithful to her. She was innocent enough to not realize that she wasn’t the only woman he was with.

A few years after the two tied the knot in a lavish ceremony, Roisin Moira came into the world. Maeve doted on her daughter, finally feeling as if her purpose in life had been realized. Darren, on the other hand, wasn’t thrilled with what becoming a mother had done to his wife’s body. Her attention was no longer solely on him, and she tended to put their little girl before him.

Rosie was closest to her mother; both were witches, while her father was a muggle. Because of this extra connection between mother and daughter, many fights were had in their large home. At the beginning, the fights were behind closed doors but as the girl got older, Darren stopped caring if she heard his unkind words about the witching world and therefore about the two of them.

There was one fight in particular that Rosie would forever remember; Maeve had made a comment in passing that she thought their daughter should attend Hogwarts for proper schooling. Darren, who had made it obvious that he didn’t want the girl around, snapped. He called both of them “freaks” and said that he didn’t want to draw any more attention to the fact that the girl was a witch. Roisin was inconsolable and spent the rest of the day in her room, feeling completely rejected from the father she had tried so hard to make proud.

It didn’t take much longer after that for Rosie to realize that she didn’t care what her father’s opinion was. Maeve homeschooled her since that was her only option, and Darren continued making snide comments about how much of a “freak” their daughter was.

Roisin’s world came crashing down one Sunday afternoon when she was out with some friends. They’d gone to have ice cream and when she returned home, her father was waiting for her in the foyer. Over the past couple weeks, Maeve had become bedridden from sickness. Rosie thought it had been the flu or something she’d get over, but her mother finally told her that she had cancer and she was dying. The fact that Rosie hadn’t been there as her mom took her last breath broke her. Darren told her that her mother had passed away while she’d been out with her friends. The girl’s heart broke, and Darren managed to show her the only care that he ever had; he held her as she cried.

Soon after the funeral, Darren moved a new woman into the house; someone he had conceived a child with, who would be giving birth to a baby boy in the next couple of months. Roisin was furious that her father had been cheating on her mother, and she let him know that. She did not like the new woman who was now sleeping in her mother’s bed and acting like she was queen of the house.

When Darren had had enough, Roisin was sent away to live with one of her mother’s cousins – another witch/wizard. Her cousin was older than her and working in the wizarding world and decided that Rosie needed proper schooling.

Now, with her mother dead and her father disowning her, Rosie is trying to find a way to be happy in her new life. She has a lot of resentment built up towards her dad, who has never really shown her much love except the brief moment when her mother died. She had always been more like Maeve: kind and gentle, loyal, and appreciating the beauty of nature. Roisin has developed a bit of a temper that usually flares up when she thinks about her mom no longer being around, and how her father moved on so quickly.

Option 2:

That rat of his was in for it now.

The gray little rascal had disappeared from his clutches at breakfast. Again.

Before Hugh even knew what was happening, Merlin had shot across the floor, somehow managing to avoid all the feet walking across the hall and had escaped through the open doors.

Which meant that Hugh was now stomping through rows of flowers and other various flora, searching for the small creature. It was like the rat knew Hugh was allergic to most flowers. Merlin always chose to run to the gardens whenever he got away from Hugh. It was as if the rat did not want to have him for an owner.

Hugh had named his pet Merlin because he had hoped the powerful name would give the rat more incentive to be more than a rat. Not that he expected Merlin to change into a wizard or anything, but rats were just so...useless, for the most part. With a name like Merlin, Hugh thought it might give the rat purpose.

The only purpose Merlin seemed to have was getting away from Hugh as often as possible.

As the fifth year trudged into the second row of flowers, not taking much care to avoid trampling the first row, he felt the first sneeze building up pressure in his nose and behind his eyes.

"You blasted rat! Where are you?"

He pulled apart a section of bright red flowers; he didn't know what they were called because he despised flowers, and ducked his head low to peer into the depths of the flowerbed. It was moving closer in proximity to the flowers that finally did it. Hugh took in three great breaths and then let out an almighty sneeze. It was strong enough to disturb some of the dirt on the ground before him.

Groaning, he stood up again and wiped his nose on his sleeve. It was as he was turning his head, his nose running up and down his arm, that movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention. Normally one who preferred to put his best face forward, Hugh was a bit embarrassed to be caught wiping his runny nose on his robes.

Nevertheless, Hugh put on his best haughty voice. albeit a bit thickly with his plugged nose and said, "Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

Response:
Roisin was still getting used to being at a school like Hogwarts; having been homeschooled until her mom died, she wasn’t used to being around other students or teachers she didn’t know. She always felt privileged to be home with her mom all the time, but now she was seeing that more as a hinderance. She remembered back to the fight her mom and dad had, when Maeve had told Darren that Rosie really needed to go to a school, and how her dad had called them both freaks. He hadn’t wanted to draw attention to the fact that his daughter was a freak.

Whatever, Rosie thought to herself anytime the memory crossed her mind now. That fight had torn her up when she heard it happen, but now she’d moved on. Her mom was gone and her dad had sent her away because he had a new family now. Her cousin, who was now her legal guardian, had been great. Also a wizard, he was working with the Minsitry and much more prepared to take care of his witch niece. He had gotten her a cat she named Jinx when she first moved in with him to make the transition easier. The cat bonded with her quickly, and while she still missed her mom terribly, she was thriving in her new life.

Having been at Hogwarts for a bit now, and she liked to lay in the gardens after school because they reminded her of the gardens that her mother had planted at home. Rosie was lying in between a row of red dahlias and purple irises, Jinx laying on her chest as they soaked up the warm sun. She felt closest to her mother when she was around flowers, which is why she usually picked this exact spot to lay down and close her eyes.

Rosie’s peacefulness was interrupted by the sound of a very powerful sneeze. Her eyes snapped open and she sat up, Jinx jumping off her as he felt her movement. She looked in the direction of the red flowers, seeing some had been ripped out. She furrowed her brow as she saw the boy wipe his nose on his robes. For one thing, the flowers had done nothing to him except excite his allergies, and he shouldn’t be wiping snot on his robes.

“Excuse me, but it’s not polite to pull flowers out for no reason. You just killed those,” Rosie snapped as she stood up and pointed at the bundle by his feet. Jinx had run off, chasing something that she hadn’t seen.
