CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character name: Niels Jurgensson

Previous and/or Current Character(s) if applicable: Jack Greenberg, Finn McLaughlin, Danny O’Mally, Raff Caruso

Character age: 36

Character education: Durmstrang ‘51

Strength and weaknesses (details please): Niels’ magical strengths lay in his incredible devotion to magic. With a deep understanding of the fundamentals of magic, coupled with several notable breakthroughs in the field of magic research, Niels has been a major voice in the academic community.

For weaknesses, Niels can be notoriously closed minded in his personal life. Somewhat vain, with a poor opinion of muggles and a poorer opinion of squibs, Niels has few reservations about the future of the wizarding world should what he sees as poor policies remain in place.

Physical description: Tall, broad, and blonde, Niels is the picturesque Scandinavian. He smiles often, although his glacial colored eyes rarely seem warm.

Personality (nice, rude, funny etc. Paragraph please.): Niels has always been described by coworkers and colleagues alike as fairly distant, with some even going as far as to describe him as cold. Highly intelligent, and decently charismatic, Niels is good at getting what he wants, and has been using this to his advantage in furthering his research. Preferring to listen over speaking, Niels collects information like one collects books, constantly adding to his collection.

Hopes and dreams. Why are you teaching at Hogwarts?: Niels has made his motivations ostensibly clear: He wants a hand in molding the future of the magical world. Knowing that the future of their world lies with them, Niels has made it clear to anyone who has asked him that if their world is to survive the next century, the students must learn more advanced magic than previously taught.

Biography (500 words minimum. There is never such a thing as too much.):
Born in the cold mountains near Tromso, Niels had a quiet childhood. Born to an ancient pureblood family with moderate wealth, Niels was raised from early on to inherit their prejudices. Prejudice against muggles, against muggle borns. Against anyone who went against the norm. Durmstrang was easy for him. He fit into a crowd of like minded boys who all went on to make grand amounts of money, and excelled at Durmstrangs curriculum. Friends say he had a girl he loved very much, but never expand on that comment.

School also taught Niels a valuable lesson- Knowledge was the root of power, and power unlocked more knowledge in a beautiful, poetic ballet. He was fanatical in his studies, scoring exceptionally high in all his tests, going as far as to be offered a fellowship with the Swiss government during the summer, which he did not accept due to an alleged scheduling conflict. Upon graduation, several of his classmates believed Niels would author the next defining magical breakthrough of their generation, particularly in the field of experimental charm work.

Upon leaving school, he became the equivalent of an Unspeakable at the Department of Mysteries. His records show he was well regarded, his name appearing on several secret breakthroughs in research. His evaluations were top notch, and there was talk about him inheriting the kingdom that was the department one day. But there was a problem. His records also showed he could be volatile, prone to anger, and obsessive over his work, often staying locked in their dungeon like lab for several days at a time, desperately trying to overcome the next issue in the experiment.

There were more breakthroughs too, and more glowing evaluations. His issues were chalked up to the intensity of a perfectionist. His views on muggle borns were in line with many other purebloods and were overlooked by everyone. He was transferred to study Love. And after a few months, he was put in charge of the Death Team, studying an unknown part of death- Particularly what exactly happened to the soul when a wizard or witch passed on.

One day, everything changed. To this day, its unclear what transpired. Officially, there was a loud bang, and upon investigation, the Death Team was found unconscious, with the exception of Niels, who was badly concussed and dazed. Healers whisked them away to the hospital, trying to determine what happened, but never fully understood the extent of the experiment. And while the team recovered, they were never truly the same. They were distant, as if part of them had been taken. Sure, they still had their souls, but there was something different... They had been wounded by death itself, and the program was shuttered.

Three weeks later, Niels resigned and left the country.

He turned up in London a few months later, seeking to continue his research, and applying to various jobs with the resources to do so.

SAMPLE ROLEPLAY
(Please respond to to this in third person past tense. Do not write the other characters' reactions. Only your own.)

It was the largest office in Hogwarts and, perhaps to students and newcomers, the most intimidating. The shelves were filled with various odds and ends, with a place of honor for the Sorting Hat, and the walls held all the portraits of past Headmasters and Headmistresses.

In the middle of the room sat a large desk. Everything was in order, for the current occupant had always despised a messy desk. It was the sign of a messy mind, and she had always favored neatness.

A clock sat on the desk, which currently showed the time to be 2:05. The meeting was supposed to begin at 2:00 precisely.

Along with order, Anneka valued punctuality. She was a very busy woman these days. Even during the summer, she had a number of matters to attend to. Interviewing and hiring staff was only of those matters. The newest potential member of her staff wasn't making a good impression.

She paced the room, black heels clicking against the stone floor. When the door finally opened, Anneka turned, her expression reminiscent of a Russian winter. "You are late."

Explain yourself was what her face said.

Roleplay Response:

The reason Niels was late was relatively innocent- The castle was enormous, and he’d never been there. Truthfully, he’d known it was larger than Durmstrang, but the magnitude to which it was bigger wasn’t possible to explain to someone who’d never made the comparison themselves.

Part of the issue was the staircases moved. He’d gone from the fourth floor to the seventh, and then down to the ninth. Not up. Down. Magic truly was a fascinating thing, and he considered the event to be less of a burden and more of an amusing little adventure.

The good news was her cold demeanor matched his own. At the end of the day, he was there for business, and preferred her keeping to the point. “My apologies, Headmistress.” He said politely, extending his hand to her, his other hand clutching a padfolio that housed his CV. “I’m Niels Jurgensson, the applicant for the History of Magic professorship.”

Option Two -
The snow had been falling steadily all morning and it didn't look like it was going to stop any time soon. Joshua Campbell scrunched his face up in a frown as he lifted his gaze to look to the sky. Snow. It really was quite a bother.

And it certainly didn't make it better that Diagon Alley seemed to be getting more and more crowded. Joshua sighed and pointed his wand at the large box that was currently placed on the doorstep of his shop. He had to get going. He had an order to deliver.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" The elderly man muttered and watched the box hover in the air for a moment. Honestly, did St. Mungo's really need that much tinsel? And with glitter of all things? He sighed again. If it hadn't been for the rather convincing stamp on the order, he would have been likely to believe it had been a prank by one of those orphaned rascals living up there.

Oh well, there was no point in waiting. Joshua deftly stirred the box down the doorstep and out onto the street, carefully levitating it above the heads of the crowd.

"Coming through! Coming through!" His voice sounded over the chatter of the crowd. "Keep out! Move ahead! Go on!" This was going way too slow. People were in the way and walking like they had all day! He huffed. Luckily the road was down hill.

"Coming through! Coming th--- arrrgh!" Joshua let out a loud shout as his feet suddenly slipped in the snow and sent him, the box, and several long strands of tinsel tumbling into the person who had been walking in front of him.

"For Merlin's sake!" Joshua muttered angrily as he hurried to his feet again, red and gold tinsel now decorating his black coat. "I am so sorry! This blasted snow!" He looked apologetic at the person he had crashed into.

Roleplay Response:

Niels looked at the man with a smile that did not extend to his eyes. The man looked beneath him, the type of man who couldn’t get a proper job in academics or something useful, so he worked for a small shop. A small shop for a small man. Probably a muggle born.

”It’s fine.” He said simply, helping the man to his feet. He drew his wand, and with a flourish, the box flew into the air and levitated lazily in the air for the man to take. Niels pocketed his wand, eyeing the floating box with little curiosity. He got little joy out of these things lately.

”Can you tell me why you’re wandering around with an enormous box of tinsel? Are you planning on decorating the whole nation?” He offered with the same ostensibly charming smile. ”You Britons love Christmas, don’t you?
