A Distant Edge of Godric’s Park
Saturday Mid-afternoon
Thirty Minutes Prio

“ I’m guessing you did the job too. “

He looked at Brutus’ father shrugging knowing that was a question that needed to go unanswered.  Even if the answer should have been obvious, as one could just look at Brutus and know he was too soft to collect potions ingredients in the forbidden forest on a full moon.

“ I’m hiring, and I don’t care you bombed your OWLs “

He chuckled as he caught the pouch of money Brutus’ father tossed to him.  He didn’t even debate the offer as he said “ Not interested” and walked away smiling that it appeared his extended family had zero clue he likely got some of the highest OWLs scores in his year.

Next to a Donation Bin

The outfit he was wearing wasn’t one for a fall festival like was going on in Hogsmeade, and minus the light brown jacket was more fit for blending in with the black jeans and black shirt.  As while he thought the festival was for a good cause all he wanted was a break from the castle and a walk around Hogsmeade would do nicely.  Plus, he didn’t want to do anything too exciting and have people mention he slipped from the castle without even mentioning his plans to his girlfriend - as he wasn’t in the mood today for escorting her around on whatever potion Robbie tended to humor her with.

” Come check this out Tee “

He heard one of the older squibs from the Hogsmeade Children’s Home who was obviously volunteering call to him and walked over.

” Can you believe this? “

Not only could he believe that the older squib was holding up a shirt with stains and a small tear he wasn’t surprised.  He’d been thrift shopping enough and knew if things like that occasionally made it on the racks way worse was donated.  Unsurprised he nodded and said “ Yeah, I’d burn ones like that.  Better to have less stuff and the little ones not realize how many donations were trash. “

Then he he noticed the next pair of pant tossed into the bin had holes in the inner seams.  Grabbing the pants he tossed it at the person* passing by that he guessed tossed it in “ You forgot to cast Reparo on the seams. “  Turning back towards the bin he saw the older squib kid who was talking to him before running away obviously chicken.

person* - If you want to be the person tossed at Tigran has bad aim and easily could have aimed at the wrong person or completely missed.  Or you could witness it and let person* be an NPC like the older squib kid who ran away…. Have fun!

The whole way here Eira's face showed exactly how she felt about volunteering at the festival just to get free entry. She had wanted to go every since its announcement in the Prophet but obviously couldn't afford to pay, the little bit of money she was allowed to have spend on her school supplies and other necessities. Besides she had been saving for some new clothes anyway that she didn't want to waste.

So volunteer work it was. Naturally she had opted for the most comfortable, easiest kind of work, that required the least amount of energy and that so happened to be accepting donations. How bad could it be?

With her scarf tightly wrapped around her neck, her thickest pair of tights and the heaviest sweater she could find hastily thrown on after almost missing her time to leave the castle, Eira arrived in Hogsmeade only a couple minutes late, finding her assigned spot by one of the donation bins, Tigran already there. Eira watched with raised eyebrows, amusement sketching a smile on her face, as her classmate angrily threw a pair of pants at a wizard, seemingly unhappy about its state, returning the unusable item back to its donor.

Maybe not the best idea. The wizard turned on the spot and stomped back to where he had just dropped of his trash, pants squeezed tightly in one fist, the other looking ready to find Tigran's face. With a flick of Eira's wand and a whispered "Suppiantara" the man unluckily tripped though and bumped into a passing giant of a man, the expression of anger quickly dissolving into apologetic pleas of excuse.

With a snicker, Eira joined Tigran, watching the fiasco unfurl, already in a much better mood than five minutes ago. "I see it's going great so far." Her eyes remained on the brawl slowly escalating, multiple passersby trying to keep the big guy from punching the donor into pulp, gawkers assembling all around.

Eira plopped a piece of chocolate into her mouth, offering some to her colleague of the day. "Thanks for making this whole ordeal less boring." She flashed an honest grin at the older boy, chewing merrily.

He turned again in the direction he tossed the pants that hit one of the men who looked close enough in his estimation to whom tossed them in the bin in the first place.  He’d not been paying attention, and probably shouldn’t have just reacted like he did.  However, his hand moved in his jacket to grab his wand just incase.

He didn’t want to have a duel in the middle of the streets of Hogsmeade, but he didn’t have much to lose by doing such.

Thankfully he saw the man trip into someone else and the situation became between them with him hopefully forgotten.  He kept his hand on his wand, but didn’t make it visible as he continued to look on for a bit at the crowd that had assembled.  All he could hope were his words were heard and perhaps a lesson was learned by at least some of them about not tossing junk into donation bins.

"I see it's going great so far.”

Noticing Eira he turned to look at her as he leaned over the bin and said “ Just great.  Doubt Logan’s coming back. “  Referring to the older squib kid he knew from the Hogsmeade Children’s Home.

"Thanks for making this whole ordeal less boring."

He took a chocolate as he debated the situation.  He’d be a fool to think they’d leave someone as young as Eira volunteering by herself.  So obviously Logan was supposed to be the older kid on this shift.  Even if he knew Eira was far more capable of handling herself than Logan would ever be - on account of Logan being a squib.

He was happy for the wall of gawkers between and the situation.  He said “ I’ll stick around till whomever replaces Logan comes around, but I’m doing some quality control.  I know the kids are supposed to be thankful for everything to make people feel better about themselves for donating, but the kids at the Hogsmeade Children’s Home have feelings too. “

Or at least he, a resident Hogsmeade Children’s Home, had feelings and wasn’t going to accept trash on behalf of the kids he had to live with over breaks and watch the little ones cry after pretending to be thankful didn’t work out for them.  There was enough decent stuff in this bin he hoped that this festival might be one of the days things did work out for them.

Then he said " Creo Blanket " conjuring a blanket on the ground which he picked up the bin and dumped it upon.  Followed by floating the first item up and with quick inspection putting it back in the bin.

Eira continued to chew thoughtfully while listening to Tigran with a cease in her brow. She had thought they'd been put on the job together. And whoever would replace this Logan, she didn't want them. "Where do you have to go off to?", she asked after a moment. If he was going to ditch this pointless work and sneak away, Eira would do everything she could to follow along. People had seen her here now. Hopefully that would be enough to get her free entry.

Setting her chocolates aside, Eira joined in digging through the pile of junk Tigran had just dumped on his conjured blanket. Listlessly she poked with her foot through the donated items, some of which clearly shouldn't have been donated in the first place. Tigran's words about the Hogsmeade orphanage had made her wonder. Was it any better there than her own orphanage back in Cardiff? It had to be, right? At least it wasn't a muggle orphanage. That had to count for something.

Levitating a good enough looking blouse back into the bin, Eira asked: "How is it?" A sudden sense of nervousness flooded through her. "Err... the orphanage, I mean. Is it any good?" Hopefully so. Her plan of transferring over wouldn't make any sense if this place was as bad or even worse than her current home.

He debated the clothes before him tossing the occasional piece that looked decent to him in the bin.  Years, of shopping at thrift stores preparing him to check things quickly for the seams and in general for holes and stains.

He said “ Nowhere.  Just needed a break from the castle. “  Or no where that he’d mention to Eira as either he was going to just walk around Hogsmeade staying outside the festival, or sneak to London in store’s floo.

He heard the question about how was the orphanage and blinked.  The fact that he lived there wasn’t something he discussed and actively tried to pretend wasn’t true at Hogwarts - a feat that his actions now and the signs the kids from it had greeting him at the express made implausible he’d succeed at.

He said in a normal tone “ It’s safe, but they provide the kids just the minimum of what’s needed.  So the kids will be excited for the toys and new to them outfits. “  As he tossed a few things off the blanket onto the ground for not passing his inspections unsure how much he should say.  Mostly as today was about getting donations for the kids.

Then he said in a whisper that he hoped only Eira could hear " It's better than some situations I've been in, but todays about getting donations for the kids. "  As if he was going to be here next to a bin, he was going to do his best to get good donations for the kids.  Then he tossed another pair of pants back in the bin.

Eira hmed in response to Tigran's shortcut answer. She felt like he wasn't telling her what he was planning on purpose. Either because he didn't want to spend any more time with her than he had to or because he was doing something secret and forbidden. Whatever his reason, Eira decided not to poke, afraid to know the answer. Maybe she'd just sneak off on her own after a while. There seemed to be plenty to look at and discover. She'd find something to do. She didn't need anyone to trail after.

Another half ripped book got kicked aside as she waited for her other question to get answered, heart thumping a little to intensely for her liking. It seemed as though Tigran had been taken off guard, taking a moment to reply. Unfortunately he didn't give her much to work with. She got it though. She wasn't comfortable speaking about her orphanage either or anything to do with her family. Maybe she should have chosen a different moment to ask about Hogsmeade's orphanage, Eira thought silently, cursing her curiosity.

Tigran kept going back to getting good donations for the kids. Eira didn't really care, if she was honest. She'd never possessed more than five things in her life, same as everyone else at her dorm. No one had ever cared to provide them with good things, let alone toys. She hadn't known it any other way and therefore didn't care that much. It was what it was and those kids would have to live with it as well. No one cared about them. They'd have to take care of themselves.

A middle-aged woman dropping of a bag with clothes interrupted Eira's thoughts, looking as though waiting for them to thank her for her gracious donation. Eira muttered a thanks, watching as the witch tossed back her grey hair in indignation and stalked off. Eira rolled her eyes before returning to the pile of junk on the ground. "Really", she said. "They expect us to grovel down and kiss their feet for getting rid of stuff they would have thrown out anyway."

Shaking her head, Eira decided she was done with digging through other peoples' disgusting old things, sitting instead on the table nearby, feet dangling and plopping another piece of chocolate in her mouth.

Even though Tigran didn't provide much insight, she still assumed the Hogsmeade orphanage was miles better than her own. At least they had magic here.

Watching the older boy, Eira shrugged, dismissing the depressing topic for now and instead asked "You going to the masquerade tonight?"

He’d been distracted by his sorting that he missed the woman handing Eira a bag of donations only seeing her as she went away in a huff.  He debated shouting a thanks after her but Eira stopped him from saying anything with her comment that made him chuckle.  Taking a deep breath he said quietly “ Don’t grovel.  Just say thanks. It makes them feel like they did something good.  Groveling feeds into their superiority complex. “

Even as the self-declared worst representation of the Razi name in existence, he was raised from birth to care about appearances and understood a superiority complex.  This whole situation fed into both of those things as few of the things were even originally of high quality that were being donated - though some were.  He honestly felt bad for tossing a pair of good quality pants that had bleach stains in the bad pile - as if the kids could transfigure them like he did much of his clothes they’d be good.

He sigh’ed at the mention of the masquerade and said “ Wasn’t planning on it. “  Which were tough words to say considering how much he loved to dance.  However, considering how Erin felt about Hogsmeade any option that he had that involved going would be awkward.

Then he bit his lip and said “ You? They did a nice event from the looks of it so the ball should be nice. “

Then he sent a more items into the bin ands burn pile clearing out the pile he had and summoned a metal trashcan from across the street towards them.  With one last look at his burn pile he summoned the high-quality bleach stained black pants putting them in the donation bin.  With a smirk he said quietly “ If someone transfigures these different colors when wearing them they’re really good quality.  “

Then with a flick of his wand and a muttered spell he sent his burn pile into the metal trash bin following it by an “Incendio*.”

Eira shrugged, tossing a piece of chocolate high in the air, catching it with her mouth. With the sweetness melting on her tongue Eira looked after the witch. She didn't care if some old, miserable feeling woman's superiority complex was fed or not. If she needed the validation, she had to go somewhere else. "I would never grovel."

Hopping from where she was sitting on the table, Eira offered the bag of treats to Tigran again. She wondered why he wouldn't go the ball. From what she knew, Tigran did have a girlfriend and even though Eira didn't know her, only saw glimpses of her during lessons, she did assume that she was the type of girl wanting to go to balls, wear a pretty dress and dance with her boyfriend. Maybe they had broken up or something, Eira silently mused. Or maybe her judgement of character wasn't as good as she hoped.

Either way, Eira had considered to go, that's why she was enduring this volunteer session in the first place. But the closer the event came, the more uncertain she grew. She didn't know of any other person attending and didn't feel like being the only one there, awkward and alone. "Don't know", she eventually replied. "Maybe just to sneak out some good food or drinks." Assuming they didn't have to be paid for.

Silently Eira watched the discarded clothes vanish inside the trash can and then go up in flames. Taken off guard by the sudden heat, Eira took a step back, eyes squinting against the burst of smoke rising into the air. Waving a hand to get the smoke out of her face she said: "Why don't you transfigure them? I bet your skills would be enough to do that." She watched the crinkling fire for a moment. "Well", she said. "Guess that's too late now anyway."

He smiled and nodded when Eira said she wouldn’t grovel.  He wouldn’t either.  So far, even in his worst moments, he’d maintained some level of pride that stopped him from groveling.  Though admittedly he’d come close over winter break last year to begging Luca’s parents to let him inside, and admitting he didn’t have a place to stay to them.

He accepted took a couple of treats and plopped them in his mouth.

He chuckled on the sneaking out food or drinks remark and said “ Not sure anyone can cook better than those house elves at Hogwarts. “  As far as food went Hogwarts was some of the best he ever had - minus his mothers Japanese cooking.  Though admittedly if the house elves wanted to make traditional Japanese food he was certain they could do better than his mother ever did.

He chuckled when Eira mentioned transfiguration skills.  With a quick shake of his head back and forth he said “ Transfiguration is my worst subject.  I can get colors good, but I got to refresh them in the afternoons or they fade patchy. “

With some of his rougher outfits he transfigured the colors before he put them on and then repeated it a few times during the day finding a closet or in the bathrooms.  Thankfully, he mostly transfigured shirts different colors and they were pretty easy to take off and re-do quickly.

Then he continued “ I saved the ones with the good material.  Though no way I’d transfigure anything in the bin as that would just upset someone if they grabbed it and it faded later. ”

With a smirk he said " Have you picked out what you're wearing to the ball? "
