Christmas Day 1972…  After this
An Hour After Dinner

He refused to go near the Entrance Hall within the walls of the castle as much like the Great Hall it was overdecorated.  Yet, here he stood outside the castle where the doors of the Entrance Hall opened to the outside world.  He’d borrowed one of his housemates brooms and chooses to fly off one of the towers in order to avoid the entrance hall entirely.  A broom he sent off to hide on a ledge he was confident no one would notice it on, so it would be there when he summoned it to go back inside.

He’d said he’d meet Eira outside.  Hopefully, she actually came outside and didn’t assume he’d walk through the inside part.

He said “ I think there might be a meteor shower tonight. “ Normally he’d of asked pleasantries such as how her day was.  The catch was today had been Christmas and the last thing he wanted as to hear about it.  A fate he’d avoided minus a few house elves who found him and gave him treats that he noticed were duller than what he remember from when he was younger.

Late June
Evening

He picked up some food at a shop on his way to Jasper’s store front after his shift at St. Mungos.  A store front he just walked into even though it was closed and in the early stages of becoming something more.

With a chuckle he said “ I brought you some dinner to distract you from helping people plan all the pranks that weren’t good enough for you to pull at Hogwarts? “

Then he put the fish and chips he bought Jasper down next to his friend before taking a seat on the stool at the table which had a couple of cauldron stations on it which they’d been experimenting with since he left school.  He then said “ I was brewing a memory potion at work and I was thinking that last week we should have tried Jobberknoll feathers for the toads. “

He chuckled when Indigo mentioned the papers with his signature would end up in the rubbish bin.  Smirking he said “ Unlike the rest of my colleagues I can’t say I care if your bosses toss it.  We both know if I applied to the Auror’s office you’d personally have my application burned.“

He was surprisingly able to get a good amount of the wounds that the woman had healed.  More than he’d seen other healers manage with Auror’s just as impatient as Indigo.  An effort he continued with more healing spells cast.

Then he heard Indigo’s questions about his own care.

He said “  My apologies.  I was told not to bother as most Auror’s are cured by the paperwork any injuries would cause.  If it’s small I’ll tack it on her paperwork. “  When it came to paperwork with how tired he was he would have zero issue filling out his side.  It was Indigo’s side he expected the headaches to occur on.

Looking away from the woman he turned towards Indigo and point his wand at him saying “Damnum Invenio ” attempting to aim a diagnostic spell towards Indigo.

Looking away was the wrong move as he felt something hit him in his lower leg and glance towards the ground showed it to be the remaining unmelted portion of the potion ball he gave the woman.  Her sound of gagging wasn’t surprising to him considering how bad he knew that potion to taste - however he wasn’t going to give her a glass container either.

After all, if he’d given her a glass container and she managed to injure herself more that would be the type of paperwork that ruined him.  Even if he doubted that she’d received that type of education like he had when he was a child.  Something told him this was someone who’d fallen from a grace he’d likely never know.

During The Grand Opening
A couple hours into the event

He stood off to the side of the shop helping customers as he blinked occasionally in the shock of it all.  He’d visited more museums on school field trips than he’d ever been to toy stores as a child - making this unlike anything he was used to.  It seemed almost alive and even grander now than when he’d wandered in and helped Jasper on various things over the summer from prank product development to setting up things.

Being supportive aside, he’d thought Jasper’s idea was some rich spoiled kid idea which he’d supported purely as he had enough rich cousins he knew it could work in this world.  Seeing the store and the products all he could do was walk around during the opening in surprise that it was working.  As in actually working in a way unsupported by illusions of influence that he suspected made some of his cousins endeavors actually work.  A surprise that would go forever unmentioned.

With a smile he said “ Don’t overlook the chameleon chalk in your prank planning. “  Then he picked up one of the containers of chameleon chalk holding it up for a second purely for deliberate pause.  Tilting the container towards the other person so the label still showed clearly he said “ It makes hiding things in the execution phase easy such as hiding vial with a smoke potion in the hands of a statue with chameleon chalk so people don’t see it.  Then use one’s wand to break the bottle from across the room letting off the smoke. “

While he didn't work here, he certainly wanted to help his friend sell stuff on opening day as he relaxed wearing a dark collared shirt and a simple pair of jeans so that he'd not stand out in the crowd.

He nodded.

Though as much as he was interested in objective measured data about how the brain worked, he wasn’t sure it would be worth the cost of gathering it on whomever it was gathered from.

His eyes went back to the book he was reading.

"What year are you in?”

He said “ I’ll be going into seventh. “  Or so he assumed as that is what Tim implied, so perhaps the Ministry was going to take on the bill for his education for a year after he clearly should have aged out of the system.

"And what do you intend to do when you're done with school?”

He said “ I have an internship at St. Mungos so I hope to turn that into a job.  If not, I got a part-time job at the Snake Pit as a bartender and jobs like that are pretty easy to get. "

He was leaving off his real back-up plan which was getting a trades job on the docks or railways as if he did that he'd rather not have anyone go looking for him in the muggle world if it came to that.

He shrugged slightly as he took a sip from his cup.

“Doubtful. Certainly not in analysis or interpretation.”

Then he put the cup down pausing slightly as he added “Though maybe with magic there is a way to get actual data on how the mind works which could be objective.“

Still he doubted even that.  The book was still interesting as he flipped to the next page.

He didn’t react when Marcus sat down as with the tea cup he’d almost expected it.

“”You're interested in the intersection between the magical mind and science?”

His interest was purely in controlling his own mind and ensuring it remained uncompromised by others either thru reading or influence.  Though science had always interested him as he remembered earlier in his learning about magic how he’d record rates of success and experimented to determine which hand was better for wand welding.  Naturally both would go unsaid - though the fact he could cast most spells with either hand was likely observable in his tendencies.

He said “Yes.  Science, if one has a source of measurement, provides a quantitative perspective which with a subject like the mind can be a key perspective.  Most the books I’ve read on the subject are biased on the authors perspective even when they include references from multiple people. “

Both perspectives are important and of interest to him.

He made a note the book was one of the man’s favorites.  A lot could be judged by which books a person preferred irregardless of subject.

He nodded at the mention of dead ends and said “Also noted by many with analogies that turn towards mazes.”

Then as the man left he heard the comment about legilimens and was rather certain it wasn’t something one stopped being.  Though, he’d accepted whatever damage could be done was probably already done and it was more a question of if the other person would be motivated to use it to his detriment.

He just hoped for the best, as he took the hint and sat at the table with the book he had to one side and pulled the new book in front of him.

His eyes were currently examining a book that described the formation of memories in the mind with how it interacted with the magical structure of the mind.  It was an interesting mix of theoretical, psychological, and biological sciences to say the least.

"Have you found what you were looking for?”

He looked up and said “ It is definitely interesting in how it is a scientifically based approach to examining such theoretical concepts.  After all, there is no way one can just examine a brain. “

He happily reached for the cup and took a sip.

After the handshake of a greeting he returned to the same posture he’d been in before.  He could tell the man was trying to figure something out from his expression, but tried to keep his expression and mind as blank as possible.  Though the reality was even with all the reading he’d done he was aware he had made very little progress with occulumency.

“Bad title, But with clear language, unlike some of the other philosophical self-gratification I have lying around,"

He said “ I suspect titles are made by editors.  Bad titles sometimes mean one less layer of philosophical self-gratification added to the content of a book. “

Though admittedly bad titles made books that could be interesting hard to find in situations where one had only small spurts of time to read them.  As there was only so much time one could be pretending to look for a book for the purpose of purchasing it when they clearly had zero intention of doing such.

He made note of the title, but he wasn’t presumptuous enough to just take a seat at the table.

He said “ Though as a title layered might not be the worst I’ve seen as most examinations of mind have authors making analogies to layers. “

His eyes glanced down at the page in the book before him as the man stood silent for a bit.

"Ravenclaw?”

Looking up again he said “ Thankfully yes. “

While he thought it would have been more logical to put himself in Hufflepuff, he was much happier with a common room that served as an auxiliary to the library.

"Marcus,"

He reached forward and said “Tigran” attempting to shake the man’s hand in the greeting offered.

The last thing he was doing was breaking any fantasy land belief that Tim held that he wasn’t being judged by someone for every action he took within the Ministry.  He’d watched his father be judged by his Ministry co-workers for being a squib who the only reason he had a job at the Ministry was his grandfather’s influence.  He’d watch his grandfather weld that influence within the ranks of the Razi family using judgement as justification for whatever direction he wanted to influence things.  The Ministry was run by people who were better than his grandfather, and whose influence didn’t fade like his grandfather’s did the minute he got sick which was months before his actual death.

Though he was unable to keep his face completely blank to Tim’s statement with eyebrows raising and him looking at Tim with an expression of skepticism.

He instinctually took a step back when Tim rounded his desk to sit on the front of it but stopped himself before it became two steps.  He even tried to keep looking at Tim as the man watched him while talking, but at the word pushback his eyes drifted towards the side of the room looking for anything to distract him from this conversation.  He took a deep breath attempting to calm himself as Tim went on about how he’d somehow become one of Tim’s responsibilities before returning to look at Tim mostly to keep track of where he was.

He said nothing, but he had zero intention of giving Tim a fight.  Well unless Tim wanted him to do something stupid, or worse something that would give his extended family any sort of leverage or desire to get leverage over him.  He suspected most of the getting out of things he didn’t want to do on Tim’s docket was related to his purposeful tanking of his own academics - which to Tim’s likely predictable regret would continue.

He said “ While I’m sure option two of imperio’ing me into some sort of puppet would be entertaining for you.  Let’s just try option one. “

She wasn’t fine.

There were half a dozen things on his scan that would in a normal situation justify an overnight stay and more than a detox.  He’d gotten multiple nights a couple years back when he got overloaded with ghosts surrounding him and his headaches got so bad he couldn’t focus on things.  A situation that even at his worst had him better than the woman before him at current.

Though he had some idea how this all went hearing stories growing up and any comfort he could give the woman was likely more than she’d get from anyone else.  Mostly as the truly disillusioned amongst his co-workers who would fail by spouting things off that caused Indigo to carry her off and leave.  He focused on casting a series of “Scourgify, Vulnera Sanentur" multiple times on as many scrapes as he could alongside a liberal usage of “Brackium Emendo” for things that were barely breaks as Indigo discussed brandy and moldy bread.

All he could do was shrug in partial agreement when the woman called Professor Amberghast a heartless bastard, however the more he got done the better off she’d be.  Indigo was an Auror, one had to be heartless in cases such as this.  He’d seen enough when he was homeless in small spurts watching people drown in bottles to know that no amount of compassion would save them - tough love was needed sometimes.

He said “ While the Victorians may have thought the salty air of the sea was a cure-all it isn’t.  It will make any scrapes I miss worse, and she’ll need to take a draught for her stomach to ensure any mold she consumed doesn’t actually kill her. “

“And she doesn’t need her nails manicured, either, before you ask. Unless she’s about to keel over and die—

He laughed and said “I think her nails are the one fine part of her” as he fetched a potion from the potion supply closet that he hoped would settle her stomach.  Part of him wished he had a bezoar to feed her just incase - but he didn’t.

“Then just sign the parchment and you can go back to whatever it is you’re pretending to be this time.”

He said “ Just remember I’m signing the healer line while you’re pretending my signature manners. “  Part of him wondered if whomever he showed it to would laugh at seeing Razi on it - though there were a number of his extended family that had positioned themselves reputably.  The catch was to his knowledge they all came from a higher station than him.

Then he measured the dosage of the potion for her stomach and put it in a small glass.  Then he looked between the glass and the woman as she indicated that he should hand it to her.   Handing a criminal a glass container that could be used to make a weapon wasn’t his plan for today so he pointed his wand at the potion and froze it into a round ice cube using a muttered transfiguration.

Then he said “ Now open your mouth and I’ll float you your potion cube. “  To which he did float it to right in front of her mouth to which she moved forward to grab it in her mouth.

A Sunday in Mid-August 1973
Emergency & Triage Ward, St. Mungos

One of the advantages of being an intern meant he got to see how things worked in different departments.  Though he had to admit emergency and triage was his favorite simply as they got to see the most diverse things which taught him the most.  Though today, he’d of been better likely working in morgue as he wasn’t moving as fast as he’d had a long night working as a bartender the night before at the Snake Pit.

He yawned not moving fast enough as the last patient was rushed in to follow the healers in the room as the healer he was supposed to be working with shut the door before he could follow.  With a shrug he brushed off the scoffing at the man had been giving him for being so tired - and being irresponsible for being such.  He couldn't find it in himself to be upset the punishment for his tiredness was being not invited to help with a puking kid.  Leaning against the center station he grabbed his cup of coffee and sipped it not even blinking as Professor Amberghast walked in.

Then he took another sip his face furrowing in confusion as Professor Amberghast kept walking with the woman towards him.

His furrow turned to shock as he Professor Amberghast signaled him to follow him into an exam room that the woman he was with was pushed towards a bed.  A push that was accompanied with restraints that would ensure the roughed up woman who had multiple scrapes and likely other injuries.

Then he heard the door close behind him.

He looked between the two confused, however he'd heard enough stories about how Aurors barely got them treated for them for things prior to being sent to Azkaban from various extended family members to realize he'd not have much time to help the woman.  Well not really help the woman, but at least see she got some level of medical care.  He said " Any injuries either of you would like to tell me about? " though his focus was more on the woman.  A focus that continued as he said "Damnum Invenio" running a medical diagnostic spell that had unsurprising results in the form of scrapes, and a few broken bones.

Then he cast "Vulnera Sanentur" saying the word clearly as he pointed at a few of the more noticeable cuts followed by a "Brackium Emendo" pointed at her right hip.  Then with a glance at the diagnostic spell he said " She has some inflammation in the digestive track so she'll need a potion before she leaves. "

Was Professor Amberghast just going to smoke?

The Snake Pit / Re: Empty Glasses of Opportunity | Open

He didn’t even blink as he recognized the man ordering a drink was Dylan, a healer he saw when he’d been in St. Mungos one of the nights he’d been there when he was younger.  Hopefully, he could get through this without making a mess as he was aware the man still worked there, and he very much valued any decent reputation he was hopefully gaining as an intern.  The catch was there was no way he was going to settle for just being an intern as he wanted a job with a bit less traceable funds - a just incase emergency fund of sorts.  Which is exactly what the Snake Pit provided in the term of tips.

With a smile he tucked the glass Dylan had behind the bar and fetched a clean one and started making the Spy-napple that was ordered.  Then as his hands were mixing the drink he said “ Definitely cool.  While I’ve seen it make some obsessive tendencies worse like the guy who checks every glass for curses. “  An actual true customer he’s had at the bar.

Then when he finished brewing the drink he added the fizzing whizbees as the last ingredient as he pulled his wand out of its holster on the side.  After all, this was one of the drinks he could have fun with as he made an illusion of the little fairy but much simpler and more bee-like flying in the air over the drink.

With a smile he handed the drink over to Dylan with the little bee-fairy hybrid he made an illusion of flying around the drink in a lap before sitting on the table.  Then he continued “ Though, I think it is neat that somehow our essence can end up on objects like object associated with good memories have a bit of us overlayed on them. “

The Snake Pit / Empty Glasses of Opportunity | Open

Late July 1973
11:30pm Wednesday Night

Leaning against the back of the bar looking over the club during a moment of calm a yawn surprised him as it escaped his mouth.  The mix of his summer spent between working an internship at St. Mungos, a bartender at the Snake Pit, and general hanging out with friends in London was starting to catch up with him.  Though as he blinked looking through the smoke and neon lights of the bar he shook off the tiredness as he noticed a hand signal from a burly man at one of the tables that indicated he should send another round of drinks.

Moving back towards the bar area he floated the containers of freshly cut mint and other garnishes he’d just prepared to the other bartender’s station then went to his own station.  He started pouring simple cups of beer as was indicated by the hand signal he’d saw.  The burly man at the table liked to talk loudly, yet didn’t want to be heard and had a rubbish silencing charm.  With him easily learning in his first week an extra tip could be earned by him enhancing it with an actual imperterbable charm - which he’d done earlier more as a public service than for the extra tip.  Once the drinks were prepared he casted kamiflage on them, then discretely floated over to the table removing the kamiflage as the drinks arrived to the customers.

Then he looked along the bar noticing an empty glass and smiled as he approached the patron.   A smile that without any conscious thought of his own was slightly flirty, but meaningless, as he said “ Please tell me you aren't going to make me guess what you want next.  Last time I tried psychometry on one of the glasses here I ended up adding a cleansing potion to the dish soap. "

It was a lie as he'd never actually tried psychometry, but looking as young as he was at seventeen he wanted to project he was older than he was - bonus points if people thought him more skilled.  Though considering all the dealings he worked to ignore at the bar perhaps the cleansing potion idea was a good one.  He wondered if there was already one there to help cover things up.

OOC: Permission granted to say he’s a part-time bartender…

He blinked at the order to Daleford.  It was a skill he’d certainly have to learn as the idea of being able to extract knowledge on a potion consumed from someone who consumed it interested him.  Mostly, as with the sheer number of potion ingredients that could be in a stew he was curious how that was possible.  Though now wasn’t the time to ask with orders being barked out and Daleford visibly scrambling.

Then he heard the diagnostic spell and looked over the results of it instead of casting his own.  He could cast it, but he wasn’t sure he wanted to show off how much less it would likely show than an actual healer would see.

“… more civilized methods for dealing with wizards foolish enough to marinate themselves in experimental potions.”

He brushed off the words and the implication that muggle techniques were not welcome with a raised eyebrow and a silent shrug.  In his mind a tank would be far more controlled with less chances of adverse magical reactions.  However, if Tala desired him to show off wand waving abilities he was more than game for that as well - especially as he knew a spell for that.

He said “I know it.  Though without the person being awake how does one know they are maintaining an appropriate stream of air?  I assume a slow stream is best to match his rate of breathing then increase it gradually. “  Not that he worried about that much as he said “ Respirare oxygeni “ with his wand tilted downward which would make the flow a bit lower than a normal stream to more match the rate of respiration of the patient.  After all, he had a feeling if he was off he’d be told and less was probably safer - it was still more than nothing.

Then he caught what Tala said about a stimulant draught.  He said “ Aren’t you concerned that by using a stimulant draught to wake him suddenly that if he is projecting that some other spirit may come back instead if it is closer? Or that it may startle him causing mental trauma."

Then after a bit of a pause he added " We could probably magically keep his body going till he comes back naturally, but that might encourage them somehow.“

With a huff and a shake of his head he said " Wait.  If they had a potion, this had to be planned so wouldn’t his associates have already tried that or smelling salts.  Or is preparation too high an expectation?  Unless a trip here is what that lot wanted, but that panic his associates had felt real. “

"Why magic of the mind?”

Naturally the why came quickly to his mind in his desire to learn occlumency out of a desire to protect his thoughts.  Though that would naturally go unsaid.

Instead he said “Everything magical comes back to it eventually.  Yet, most look outward.”

A statement that in its vagueness said nothing.  Yet at the same time his statement could imply many things and he was curious to see where someone with the collection that surrounded him would take it.

"Thanks,”

He was smart enough to understand the body language of the request for the book, and carefully handed the book to the man.

Whatever curiosity the man had on the book he’d choosen was quickly resolved as it was handed back to him.  He assumed deep familiarity with the collection and only blinked slightly impressed with how it flipped back to the page he’d been reading.

"They recognise you,”

He assumed the spirits.  He didn’t recognize them.  He avoided recognizing spirits on an individual basis especially in Knockturn Alley.

He said “ In general they take notice of those who acknowledge them without fear. “

He did recognize he felt less of them after the man nodded so these were likely not general spirits.  Though he'd also noticed before they felt slightly different from general ghosts as well.

Emergency & Triage Ward

He never expected his professors tendencies to use children’s literature as a teaching aid would be applicable once he was working.  However, this patient was certainly a sleeping beauty to the point he was surprised one of his many followers wasn’t trying to kiss him awake.  He had to admit the guy was likely cute underneath the tattoos of spiritual symbols that made him appear as if he was some sort of summoning table personified.  Tattoos he noticed smaller versions peaking out from under the clothes the people accompanying him.

He stayed to the side of the room waiting to be asked to do something just listening to the details that the mans accomplices sputtered out in a half panic.  The man was Keegan Beattie and apparently he drank a potion to prolong the relaxed state of his body to support an extended state of some sort of exploration on the spirit plain.  He also overheard that Keegan’s pulse rate was slow, he was breathing much slower than he should have been, and the man felt cold.

Looking at the mans accomplices he said “Were you with him?”  To which just made Keegan’s accomplices panic more as they rambled on about how he lead them but they failed to follow as they weren’t prepared for the journey even though they’d had the same potion.

A panic from Keegan’s accomplices that lead them to be lead out of the room leaving him alone with Tala.  Blinking he said unsure “ Should I fetch an oxygen tank as with his breathing rate that low he might not be getting enough which can impact the mind. “  The reason for his uncertainty wasn’t his proposal, but driven from his surprise at the reaction Keegan’s accomplices that are now confirmed to be followers of some sort.

He was never sure if he was supposed to greet the spirits that seemed to surround him in this shop.  At most he gave them a nod of acknowledgement he could see them as he was more interested in reading the books than being noticed.  He certainly didn’t have the funds to be a customer, and his situation so precarious he wouldn’t even trust himself to check anything out.

This was probably his fourth time wandering in and he was smart enough to stay to the side with a slouch smartly limiting himself to short bits of time that he could pretend to be browsing.  Though, this time he lost track of time carefully reading an untitled book that was describing how divination interacted with the magical mind.

Then his eyes saw as he carefully flipped a page and returned to the top of it that someone was in front of him.  With a gulp he looked up and saw the shopkeeper.  With a smile he said " I must commend you on your collection. "

Hoping a compliment would give him time to think of a good escape plan beyond slipping in and out - his original plan.
