Malevolence and amusement intertwined, crashing into a dangerous tango that splayed across red painted lips. The corner of her mouth upturned the slightest, but it was her eyes with their cutting edge that held the violence that played across scarlet.

Laughable, honestly. Downright entertaining to witness this puny little thing scramble for courage and make a show for nothing. Her body followed its motor impulses as her soul withered away. Though it didn’t take Alice’s presence to do that; one look at stutters here and Alice could safely assert that the blonde held not one sliver of confidence.

But how sweet, truly, that she caught a whisper of it and held so firmly to it. Quite a sight to behold. She might have even applauded the girl for her effort.

Instead, Alice stepped closer.

“Very good at your job, are you?”

Another step.

“How foolish of me to doubt you. Quite the backbone you’ve got there.”

She loomed closer, invading her space, siphoning the one drop of bravery she’d managed to muster.

“Funny thing about it though. Spines—”

Limited space pushed the girl until her back hit the bar.

“—can—”

Alice hovered over, closer and closer, forcing the self-entitled barmaid to recoil awkwardly back onto the counter if she sought for space.

“—break.”

Piercing hues stayed firmly on the girl as she reached for the nearest bottle and pushed it off the counter, sending glass and liquid spread across the floor.

“Oops.”

She looked even uglier up close.

The weak little street rat had her defenses up so high, Alice guessed the faintest chip in her feeble armor would send the pathetic thing down to her knees. If genetics granted her the smallest favor, maybe she’d be pretty in that position; let someone with little self-respect and insatiable craving test that theory.

The corner of red lips itched higher, her scrutinizing gaze not missing the twitch in the woman’s fingers. At least she had some sort of survival instinct, but so many of them walked in with the fake bravado she displayed now, ready to counter the siren only to be left enchanted by her voice and their shell empty, their soul in her clutches. Her gait gave way to purpose, and her words held a point, but her psyche was broken and her core rotten. She didn’t need to break down her illusioned fortress to see that.

But good for her, trying to test the waters and play the intimidation card. It was almost cute.

“My my, someone’s seeking trouble.”

Alice stepped closer.

“Or answers.”

Her finger traced the line of her jaw.

“Or both.”

Nothing unmanageable, of course. With Veritaserum being contraband, far too many walked into the shop demanding it. But at least she was creative, wanting a glim—hell, even she couldn’t lie and convince herself that was an original request; it just made her look even more like an amateur.

The unnatural lightness to her eyes pierced through the woman before her, following the lines of her face, watching misery and deception ooze out of her pores.

“Don’t look like you can pay the price.”

The pad of her finger lifted her chin up, her thumb soaring over the line of her bottom lip.

“What do you have to offer, darling?" The nickname slipped smooth like velvet, pleasant and enticing, a layer to conceal the danger of such question.

The more the blonde spoke—stuttered, really, the thing barely capable of stringing letters together—the more the sharp angles of her face slacked, sinking into desperation.

“You’re a bartender but you’re not a drinker? What the hell are you doing here?”

Alice gave the bar another look, the disgust evident in her gaze. “Idiots truly are cheap labor,” she mused. Sharp green eyes landed on the child playing adult on the other side of her bar. Slowly, they followed her upper half not concealed behind the counter, noticing every rumple and fold in her clothing, the flat shade of her hair, the cracks in her mask. They dug into her hues as if breaking through her skull, fetching conserved secrets.

“Bet you don’t get any tips,” her voice was husky, the borders between insult and inappropriate blurring. “No wonder, have you even looked at yourself?”

She glanced upward at the menu and another wave of regret for even stepping foot into the establishment hit her. Sunday roast. Might as well advertise that every patron was family—gag.

She badly needed a drink.

Alice walked to the other side of the bar. “Move,” she ordered, swatting the air by the girl’s face. “Your misery is polluting my air.”

The owl took flight just as she crushed the letter in her hand.

This was the problem dealing with shady businessmen; they loved to live by their own rules. Unfortunately for them, they didn’t know Alice Swan. In their gangland infested by patriarchy, they looked down upon her, reducing her to a good looking woman their eyes could feast on, insinuating nothing cunning or sharp inhabited her skull.

These sons of bitches were in for a nice surprise next time they stepped in her shop.

Taking out her wand, she burned the parchment to a crisp, letting the breeze carry the ashes away. Spinning on her heel, she walked into the bar they were meant to meet at, desperately needing a drink—

What fresh hell was this.

Barely any patrons littered the disgustingly friendly atmosphere of this establishment meant to be a bar. She wrinkled her nose at the sight of mismatched furniture and…games? She suddenly felt an increasing urge to turn back and brave the cold, taking the small walk to Knockturn Alley and losing herself to the familiarity of the Snake Pit’s colorful neons and questionable customers. Everyone here just looked sad and deplorable, far too dreadful to even be a shred of entertainment for her nefarious ways.

Those assholes would pay even more for making her step foot into this shitty bar.

Shrugging out of her coat, looking even more out of place with the dress that hugged her figure, Alice walked towards the bar. Her gaze landed on the girl behind the counter, and she wrestled her face to remain neutral even if a new wave of disgust crashed over her.

“You work here?”

She looked just as miserable as the others. For all she knew, she decided to play mixologist for the night to give a meaning to her depressing life.

Her hip pressed into the counter, legs crossed at the ankles, the slit of her dress hiking up her thigh exposing soft skin. Alice smoothed the red silk that adorned her curves; call it her work uniform, a reminder to these pitiful men that she bathed in money and elegance, and that their power was a joke compared to the influence she had in the criminal underworld.

”That all twenty vials?”

“Need me to count for you, big boy?” she drawled lowly, eyes admiring freshly manicured nails.

In the corner of her eye, he bristled. ”And these’ll work?”

Light eyes flickered up to meet the man whose flush was apparent even in the dimly light storage room. Her head tilted, golden waves covering one eye. “Are you doubting my capabilities?” her smooth smoky voice asked, betraying the sharpness in her gaze.

The boy—and really that was what he was, a boy—shriveled. ”N-No, ‘mam. The boss was just—“ he gulped. Paused, continued, “The boss’ll be happy,” he stammered, dropping a bag that sounded heavy from the sound it made on the counter.

She hummed. “Tell Howard I miss him, will you?”

She stepped towards him, and she could hear his heart race in the distance she swallowed between them. Her mouth quirked up, kind and loving as her knuckles traced his cheek, running down to his lips and stopping at his chin. She could feel him press into her touch, his eyes glazing, spine curling to get closer.

“And tell him next time he questions my skills—” Suddenly, her claws sunk in his jaw, enough to leave half-crescent moons on his skin. The sweet illusion on her lips faded leaving viciousness to take its place. “I’ll feed his potions to his messenger boys.”

The boy’s face blanched, infatuation completely smothered by her threat. In a haste, he dashed out the stockroom, causing a low chuckle to tickle the back of her throat. Grabbing her wins, Alice walked to the front of her closed shop just as the front door opened.

Well, someone looked like shit.

In a quick calculated glance, her eyes assessed the woman’s clothes and composure. Pathetic street rats always came crawling when in need and she didn’t seem any different than the others who would get on their knees and beg for any kind of work or product she could give them.

But there was always a price, and she wondered, looking at this miserable excuse of a woman before her—they had their stench, these lowly people, and she felt it permeate the air—if she could afford whatever she came asking Alice Swan.

(They rarely could; now that was the fun part.)

Her heels clicked against the floor as she rounded the counter and leaned back against it. Predatory eyes latched onto her prey.

“Name your vice.”

Elixirium / Shop Description
« on: 04/15/2020 at 01:01 »
Welcome to Elixirium!

As you step in the door, Elixirium looks like any other apothecary or potions supply shop you’ve been in. Endless shelves of vials are arranged through the shop, all carefully labeled and organized into categories so it’s easy to find what you’re looking for. Prepared ingredients, animal parts, and jars of strange looking substances line the wall, ready to be measured out for your current projects, with the vials, cauldrons, and anything else you’ll need on display just to the right.

Kits for those attending Hogwarts have been already assembled for purchase where they’re easy to grab. A small garden centre is also maintained, filled with herbs, flowers, and greenery. To one wall, workspaces are set up, so you can see the magic happen, or perhaps get your hands dirty as well. Lessons and workshops will be offered for those interested in expanding their potions skills.

A counter separates the front of the shop from the employees area. To one side, a curtain with a concealment charm hides a breakroom for the staff. To the other, a door leads to a stock room that doubles as a meeting space for those looking for something that requires a private conversation. Two doors can be found at the back, one leading out of the shop and one leading to a stairway that will take you to Alice’s upstairs apartment.

Though the outward appearance of the shop is rather clean and straightlaced, one only needs to inquire with the owners about ‘placing a special order’ to see the full extent of what the shop provides. Stock previously sold through the Snake Pit can now be picked up locally and requests for illegal concoctions can be discussed in person, though orders by owl or through previous connections are still accepted.
