St. Mungo's / A Fungus Among Us | Robbie
« on: 03/03/2025 at 01:28 »
Late March, Evening

The middle-aged woman had been sent straight up to the Magical Bugs department where he was working today though he was sure it should have been spell damage.  There was no way the things coming off her neck were an infection of any sort as all his mind could picture was some torture-iffic transfiguration that gave her what looked like tentacles coming out from her.  An opinion that was further supported when one of the healers from spell damage claimed it was definitely spell damage from a series of hexes.

He said nothing as the healers debated and just took the sample ensuring that he didn’t touch her while taking the sample.  As one thing he’d learned was when he had no clue to let the more experienced healers debate unless they were asking him about something.  Thankfully this time they weren’t as they were to busy debating with each other whose case it was.

Floating the sample in front of him he made his way to another room and saw Robbie.  With a small nod of recognition he said “ I’m sure you can hear the debate through thew wall if that patient was hexed or has scrofungulus. “  Then he floated the sample towards one of the workstation tables in the back room so he could examine it.  Then he added with a smirk “ With how much debate they are having I’m surprised I wasn’t followed with the sample. “

His words just friendly small talk before he looked at the workstation and debated his plan to figure out what this was.  His first step was put the sample under the microscope to take a look at it mostly to give himself time to remember what test was he supposed to be running.  Then he said mostly to himself " This doesn't look right. "  The structure seemed more like a fungus than something that came from a person.

Jasper's Jollies / Re: Rising Steam | Jasper
« on: 02/17/2025 at 01:59 »
As one of the toads let out a croak as if it agreed with Jasper he lost the ability to nod and agree with Jasper.  He gritted his teeth and had forced his jaw shut as Jasper pointed out they’d succeeded at making the individual a confessional fountain.

He agreed, but his jaw opened as he blurted “ Confessional fountain is nothing my sisters used to write everything in there journals.  One time my sister eldest sister Avery was acting a bit off and I managed to Alohomora her journal open and she wrote pages on how she snogged a boy my other sister Emika had a crush on.  And Emika was. “

He stopped himself as every bit of protectiveness towards his sisters memory made him reach up and use his hand to hold his jaw shut.  Thinking of garden gnomes and geese was a much better thing than his sisters.  Though he had no idea what sort of story would tumble out of his lips if he let his jaw be anything other than held shut.

He reached for the drops and without his hand holding his mouth shut he said “ One of my cousins hexed a gnome too. “ then he got the drop in his mouth before he could continue to describe the hexes his cousins practiced on the gnomes that made him thankful they didn’t duel at Hogwarts.  Which made him briefly wonder for the first time why he was encouraged to duel at Hogwarts by his grandfather and they weren’t.

Blinking he said “ I’m sure I have better stories that those rambles. “ Though he had to admit the one with his cousins hexing the gnomes was hilarious until it all got taken too far.  Then he said “ The gnomes survived, though after the funny dancing they only survived as one of the adults set them flying before my cousins took their practice too far. “

He said " Let's make sure the toads only can  pry a couple sentences out at most, and maybe have the person keep a little more control.". He certainly did not intend to touch one of the toads again unless he was sure it was just him and Jasper and even then he was nervous.

St. Mungo's / Re: Gobstones and Bubbles | Dylan
« on: 01/31/2025 at 12:24 »
He stopped himself from reacting to being told to give the biggest bubble a poke.  As he couldn’t imagine using a work like poke in the name of science, but alas he’d accepted that healing was more practical with it being a word that was probably better for the patient to hear than the alternatives that went through his head.  Bedside manner was one of those things he still had to work on as his brain to easily went towards pure scientific curiosity.  Patients were people and words like poke were much less scary than the word excision which more described what he’d be actually doing.  Especially to wizards who knew that exorcisms were real.

What he couldn’t do was hold back a look of surprise as Dylan called him one of the brightest interns.  Blinking he nodded slightly towards Dylan thanks, then focused on the tool in his hand examining various accessible bubbles on the patient choosing one.

The ones that had obviously been wiped getting more on the man were not ones he could pick.

The man’s friend said “ It looked like a gobstone. “  Then the patient said “ Only thing different was it was a bit warmer and itchy. “

The word itchy made him think that the bigger bubbles would be more of the patient’s reaction. Picking a bubble he applied a salve with gloved hands saying “ I’m going to put this salve over the area so none of the contents of the bubble will touch your skin. “  Then he counted with his metal tool working as he said “ This will scrape. Then I’ll side it towards this small glass plates so it doesn’t spread on your skin. “

Or so he hoped, thankfully it didn’t.

He managed to pop one of the bubbles and get the goo on the very thin piece of glass. He said “ I’ll have this sent for a test. “  As he handed the film over to one of the other healers lingering about the side of the room who wandered off with the sample.  Then towards Dylan he asked " I got one of the larger ones, but do you think I should do one of the smaller ones as a larger one has likely more of a reaction from the patient.  Or do you think the reaction is equal it was just the size of the splatter that was smaller. "

Then he looked towards the patient as he said “ Were you using them like a set of regular gobstones as this seems like a larger coverage area than a normal squirt of them and let me tell you there is always a fall pick-up in popularity of the game at Hogwarts. “

He noticed the pink cheeks, but considering what Dylan was drinking he hadn’t expected them.  Like many things he noticed it would go unmentioned.

He said curiously “ Really?  Now, I’m older I think the hat made the right choice, and when it happened I was happy to be wrong.  However, I know plenty that would disagree. “  For example any Razi besides himself who didn’t get sorted in Slytherin definitely disagreed. He’d predicted Hufflepuff for himself, though considering Brutus was in that house he wasn’t upset he was wrong.

He nodded.  Though with being a bartender it wasn’t just about knowing when to chat it was about knowing when to walk away or not hear things.  He wasn’t sure if there was anything that one legitimately did that made one a respected bartender as it just wasn’t one of those jobs, though he accepted the complement as it was with a smile.

He said “ I’ve only heard rumors. “  Thankfully, for about any business in Knockturn there were at least a dozen rumors whirling at any time.  As he didn’t want to admit that he had no idea what sort of business relationship Marcus had with the Altair guy who was rumored to run the shop.  Thought he’d been in it plenty reading books.  He said “ When I walked by it felt like the ghosts had a depth to them.  So I’d say just controlled as I suspect some of those ghosts are older than anyone living even a wizard.  What was your impression of them? “

The reality was he had no clue of the ghosts in Musspell.  The catch was he was certainly curious about others perspective as it had the best books he’d ever found outside of Hogwarts.

A Sunday Afternoon in November

The routine of working at St. Mungos made him less focused on the classes he was taking at Hogwarts.  His only focus was his research interests into magic of the mind, studying for NEWTs, and doing good at this internship.  As the reality was he’d decided he was either going to become a Healer or his grades likely wouldn’t manner as he didn’t see himself in the Ministry or anywhere else that would care.

As he looked around St. Mungos he realized how little grades likely mannered in the wizarding world with things like who you knew and the reputation of ones family being more important.

Thankfully, there were places like St. Mungos in the wizarding world were when it came to a medical issue at least everyone was treated equally - or so he thought.  He saw a pair of guys just a bit older than him being rushed to a room with shocked questions coming out of the other healers mouths questioning how this could have happened with a gobstone.

“ It exploded and hit me “ said one of the patients whose eyes were scrunched shut with bubbling spots on his skin.  Then the other man said “ Like I just told those healers that ran out and told you to clean him up.  I got a new set of gobstones and it was our first game. “

Tigran looked at the guy with the spots of bubbling skin and said “ I’m guessing the lines on the arms are where you tried to Wipe it and it spread?  We are going to need to get a sample of it. “  Then he grabbed a metal tool realizing he might have to scrape off a sample off one of the small splotches of skin that the man had bubbling.

All he could do was look at Dylan and hope the more experienced healer had a better idea.

Jasper's Jollies / Rising Steam | Jasper

A Sunday in mid-July
Early Afternoon

He’d already blurted out a whole rather embarrassing story about how he’d fallen on his bum as a child into muddy water with his legs folded when he was at his grandfather’s house.  Which resulted in his cousins teasing him saying he poop’ed his pants and naturally became even worse when one of his much older cousins had hit him with a stink transfiguration.

Not being able to imagine what would come out next he attempted to grab his tea cup ignoring the fact it would likely burn his mouth as he drank it.  The problem with the tea cup is even though he choked a bit his cup was quickly empty.  There was no stopping him.

He barely managed a breath before he blurted out “ Have you ever been to a farm.  I went to one once when I was in grammar school before Hogwarts.  It was the weirdest place and stunk.  I thought it would be like the seaside with all the fresh air as it wouldn’t be as crowded.  It wasn’t.  One of my classmates tried to pet a horse and it bit at him.  Well more gummed as it just got its blubbery lips on him.  When we got back me and one of my buddies got two long sticks, tied wet rags to one end and set up a center tie like my mom did to teach me to use chopsticks when I was a toddler.  Then we used it to grab the guys arm.  He screamed so bad. “

These were funny stories that he always stopped himself from telling Jasper because they were either embarrassing or would have details of the life he’d lived in the muggle world.  Things he wouldn’t normally mention.

Then he managed a breath before continuing again “ Now screaming let me tell you we screamed so hard when England won the World Cup.  I had to watch it on the telly, but I was at my friend Luca’s house and everyone was watching.  You could hear it thought the walls the neighbors screaming at every goal.  Then when the game “

As he breathed in he managed to stop himself from saying more.  A miracle as he’d been rambling on with various stories for minutes.  He just blinked looking between Jasper and the cauldron in front of him with the spoon he was holding.  A spoon that had a dampness from the steam rising from the cauldron.

He had to nod as he agreed it certainly took a lot of imagination to run this place.  He couldn’t imagine taking the risk of opening a business like this himself mostly as his focus was purely on stability.  Though he said nothing as he assumed the boy meant instead the fantastical products in the shop.

With a smile he said “ Don’t be afraid to enhance some of those stories when they come your way.  Have fun with it. “

Then he smiled as the boy picked up one of the containers.  Then said “ It was nice talking to you too “ as the boy turned away.

With a smirk he said “ It all is impressive to me, and consider thinking up an idea yourself to try to impress Jasper. “  . Then he went to a nearby shelf and started organizing the products on it that had been moved about.

He blinked.  It would be easy to agree and attempt to get Marcus to continue gathering his perspective which had high odds of being more researched than his own.  The catch was he didn’t think of the terms that way even though most of the books he read did.

Perhaps he was wrong.  His doubt making him pause as he heard Marcus describe fetching peoples spirits who’d been lost something he’d read about but never truly considered mostly out of fear of lack of control one had in the otherworld.

He said “ I think of the mind as more of a conduit.  A conduit that can either serve to hold or tether one’s spirit to a person.  As even if a person is mostly a vegetable without there spirit there body still survives. “

Then he said “ If you need something brewed and get the supplies I’d be happy to brew it for you when I have off from work. “

He smiled.  If there was anything he was, it was resourceful.

Though he wasn’t confident that being resourceful could save this potion as he considered it further.  With a shrug he said “ Rum cocktails are illusions of pirate ships as the trick is the customer has to think of some sort of wonder about it and adding noise to the Snake Pit would distract from other things like the music and conversations. “

Then he smiled as Jasper told him about the progress he made on the other things.  At least there’d be less experiments with the dung bomb deluxe as it was one product he couldn’t even understand why it existed.  Though, he’d seen enough stinky pranks at Hogwarts to not question the appeal it had for other.

With a chuckle he said “ I clean bathrooms at a bar and work at St. Mungos.  I’ll take care of the back bathroom before I leave. “ Even if both the Snake Pit and St. Mungos were rather clean compared to places he worked as a janitor in the muggle world without magic that would go unmentioned.  With magic this would be nothing and part of him was shocked Jasper didn’t just clean it himself.

He raised an eyebrow doubting if Jasper would have eaten before he got truly hungry.

Considering the potion again he said “ I think the best we can get with this is try to get this down to a paste then consider it another day.  What is the next experiment on the agenda? “

He nodded as she mentioned she was a former Ravenclaw.  If he had to guess among the patrons he had this summer he assumed they were in the minority.  Though they were among the more interesting ones he served from his position behind the bar.

He happily took the coin purse with a quick estimate of it more than covering the drink.  A division that would be handled later with less watching.

With a smile he said “ I haven’t worked my way up to closing yet. “ as he pointed at one of his larger male co-workers at the door.  As even if in the wizarding world size meant a lot less it still was intimidating to most in the Snake Pit.  While he hadn't seen it truly tested he figured the man by the door had an arsenal of spells to complement his muscles.  If not, this summer working at the Snake Pit unlike his attempts at dueling in Hogwarts had certainly made him more capable of sending hexes himself with an efficiency towards restricting people's movements.

Then he smirked “ I’ll be good as I can apparate and they’re all scared of a splinch especially as many wouldn’t be able to apparate themselves to St. Mungos. “ The fact that he might have some obligation to help them in that state went unsaid as he certainly wasn’t going to advertise he was interning as a Healer which would make him appear weaker.

He said “ I’m Tigran, and I don’t believe I got the pleasure of catching your name. “

It had been years since he’d been to a formal party and worn dress robes which he transfigured to look better and add silver accents.  Back then his grandfather had him summoned to refresh his memory on things.  Lessons that came in handy as he passed the knowledge combined with a few experiences he had in the past onto Kora.

He wished he’d managed to get Brutus to pay such attention to him when he tried to invite his cousin to dinner where he was staying prior.  His cousin had zero training for this as no one ever expected him to ever go to something like this.  The Razi family was very divided by class and the only reason he got educated in both sides was because his grandfather had been the Head of the Razi family putting him in the higher class, but his parents were squibs dropping him to the lower class in the hierarchy in the Razi family.

He started the introductions at the door with whomever greeted them when they got there with a slightly nodded head and the expected greetings.  Though he attempted to work through them as fast as possible as it felt foreign emphasizing his name was Tigran Razi with the emphasis on Razi said with a pride that had been trained into him.  Plus with Kora on his arm he held a certain nervousness for both the introductions and the evening.

Thankfully, they’d gotten past the introductions.

It didn’t take long for Kora to mention getting a drink which if this were him really dating her should have been him.  He recognized it for what it was and whispered “ Never fill the cup, three quarters at most. “ giving her one last piece of advice before he watched her go towards Brutus.

A Brutus that was regrettably standing by Cordie meaning he couldn’t just follow.

For all the training for these events this was the first one he attended since his grandfather's death a bit over two years prior.  He found himself a spot along the wall to just observe like he used to.  He hoped Brutus would handle this situation with a level of composure that at least kept things solid with Kora.  As the rest of his extended family was in enough chaos the fact that Kora was at least a halfblood might go unnoticed for a while - due to bigger problems.

He nodded.  How one set up the prank was sometimes more important than the prank itself.  He said “ Yes. How it is set up is what people remember, and what makes it a prank that is funny not something that is more malicious. “

Though he still didn’t get how buckets filled with things dumping on people counted as pranks.

He nodded as the boy seemed to be getting it.

Then he asked if it was a class at Hogwarts and he said “ Thankfully not.  Pranks are more of an art and it wouldn’t be fair to judge that academically. “ Plus, if it became a class the school would become more chaos than it already was.

He shook his head no and laughed when he was asked if he was the Hogwarts prankmaster.  He wasn’t.  He admittedly had little interest in pranks himself beyond his friends pulling him into them.  He said “ That title belongs to Jasper who owns this store. “

Then the kid set off running with questions about him and he just blinked and said “ Everything with pranks is experimenting.  I hope someone will pull off something original and theatrical, and I’m sure you’ll get plenty of interesting stories of your own journey at Hogwarts. “

He chuckled and said “ In potions everything is creative problem solving.  You’d be surprised how many potions that haven’t turned out as expected I’ve taken onto the dueling block. “  An admission that was probably better made after Jasper had graduated.  Though he acknowledged his friend still had family in the castle that might see him on the block next term.

He just nodded at the comment about a healers handbook with a smile.  Mostly as he’d read quite a few versions of such a thing that various healers wrote and it only showed what he already knew which was one never knew what they’d see in St. Mungos.

He said with a smirk “ Exactly, and don’t forget leprechauns for the Irish beers. “

With a shrug he said “ Probably more Tattle, but I’m sure you can find a use for it somewhere.  How is the rest of what you are working on coming?  As, this was probably more tattle than toad ten minutes ago and you look way to hungry to have waited for me to randomly come by.  Just imagine if I'd of gotten caught up in something at work. “

Again within minutes of meeting him another person pegged him as a Ravenclaw.  He was, but it still surprised him as he found his housemates ran the gambit with the biggest clue typically being how many books they had surrounding them.  Currently he had zero books, still the only thing he was looking forward to at Hogwarts was relaxing with a big pile of books.

He said “ Thank you, and yes I was sorted into Ravenclaw. “ Wording again to be truthful yet still not say he was still a Ravenclaw.  Though he was uncertain if after graduation one was still a Ravenclaw with how quickly adults guessed at houses.

Then he said “ Though I would have described my drink as more of a Hufflepuff creation as a proper preparation of garnishes is hard work.“ Though maybe not as the attention to detail was definitely a Ravenclaw one.

He asked “ Were you a Ravenclaw as well? “  Mostly as it was the safest house to ask anyone about as being seen as smart was always a compliment.

The fact that Marcus didn’t understand him surprised him as besides divination professors at Hogwarts he waged Marcus had the highest odds of such.  Though admittedly he was used to it.  As it was rare he spoke with anyone interested in having conversations on magic related to the mind due to most peoples interest in divination not straying far from the predictive applications.

Yet, unlike most he wanted to at least try to help Marcus understand as perhaps someday it might get him an opportunity to read books on similar.  As it was he was collecting data from books that barely touched upon his true interest.

Naturally he was interested in Marcus’ way with the ghosts, but his mind was more focused on how he might make Marcus understand his words better.

He said “ I’d suspect you do some of the things I’m describing, however much like most books I’ve read if similar concepts are mentioned they are usually training steps with the objective achieving something like entering the Otherworld with the focus quickly passing towards that goal. “  Which while regrettable also meant he’d read books on a lot of types of divination searching for such references.

He continued “ While I find the applications interesting, I must admit I’m more interested in the control and impacts to the mind of extending it into such realms.  When one is studying other forms of magic like transfiguration one starts with building blocks gaining control with very few ultimately achieving the skill to transform themselves into an animagus.  The catch is the field of divination mostly treats the advanced levels of stretching the mind as individuals having an inherent gift of talent not as a focused upon skill.  Which leads to a high number of practitioners of it experiencing being overwhelmed as part of there journeys.  An overwhelmed that when it reaches St. Mungos often is responded to with potions that quell the mind without helping the person gain control in a cyclical pattern of dependency. “

The fact that he had some inherent magical talent in the field of predictive divination went unsaid, and that talent with it’s lack of control was the motivation of his interest.

With a smile he nodded knowing exactly the question she was referring to.  The one on his age that he stopped answering outside the castle years ago as it either opened up leverage for others or disappointed them.  Thankfully now he was at a point where it would just bring disappointment.

He said “ I do.  I also had some of the best tasting potions in the hospital wing when I was working in the apothecary at Hogwarts. “ A phrasing used to hopefully make Hogwarts seem more in the past than the tomorrow it actually was.

He looked at the options behind the bar picked out a good combo that would compliment ice well.  Ice that he made special by cutting a few strawberries into thin flower shapes along with small mint leaves placing them in the bottom of an ice cube tray then making half cubes of them by transfiguring the water frozen. Then he quickly prepared one of the stronger cocktails over his ice cubes that would normally have strawberry and mint as a garnish which he added a bit less of the normal garnish before handing it to the woman.

He resisted the urge to add any illusions to accent the drink like he often did as he had a feeling that would just make him seem younger.

He said “ Sometimes there is more to life than functionality. “ For him that sometimes was rare, but a summer as a bartender taught him optimism was good for tips.

“ Another round Tigran. “ a man shouted from down the bar.

A smile crossed his face as he quickly moved to pour another round of the boring Irish beers the man and his friends were fond of.  Beers that he silently used his wand to float over to the men with a softly muttered spell only for the illusions of the leprechauns dancing around the glasses.

Returning to standing in front of the woman he said with a smile “ I hope I wasn’t wrong in thinking you’re the type of woman who doesn’t like her liquor hidden and instead prefers it accented in cocktails. “

He had to smirk as the woman tried to remove dumb from the equation.  Having spent the last couple of years, being underage, working on and off in bars and clubs during his breaks and specializing in being a janitor he’d never remove dumb from the equation.  Even when the equation involved himself he accounted for dumb, even if he was smarter than most as he didn’t drink beyond tasting things for research purposes.

He said “ The world appreciates that you tried. “

Stronger than water was where he excelled.  He said “ Do you have a specific drink you’d like to order, or I can make you a custom cocktail if you’d like. “  Naturally he hoped for the custom cocktail as he did enjoy the creativity of mixing drinks.

Being younger was a constant in his life.  Though admittedly lying about his age saying he was two years older for the majority of his life and using a fake identity when he lived in the muggle world was a contributing factor.  He said “ It’s a business like any other, and it takes far more practice and training than most realize.  Let’s just say when one becomes a potioneer one has far less ingredients to consider and far more time to consider them without having to please the palette of discerning customers. “

With a smirk he said “ Regrettably, most getting into the business miss a lot of that and are just trying to switch sides of the bar which in my experience doesn't work at any age. “  It also meant the majority of his summer was spent on the slower nights at the bar and he had to hold himself to a slightly higher standard than others who worked alongside him.

Naturally he dodged the question of if he was still in school.  He was.  However, he was smart enough to not say that.

He’d seen the slap out of the corner of his vision but as the situation didn’t escalate he’d forgotten about it until he heard the woman’s snappy tone.  He didn’t need to see an aura to tell this woman meant some sort of business so with a twirled flair between his fingers he very visibly put his wand back tucked inside his sleeve.  He was unsurprised this woman was not one for chicken tenders.

With a smirk he said “ Unless you’re here to tell me bar hopping gets more refined. “ Then with an exaggerated pause and a tilt of his head he continued “ I’d wager young and dumb is the perfect age for it. “  Hoping that a smile and a bit of humor might improve the woman’s mood.

Then he wiped the bar with a calm motion before putting his rag back on the lower part of the bar as he said “ Not that I’ll be bar hopping as still got some time on my shift back here. “  A sentence accented with him making a welcoming wave of his hand over the top of his bar.  Then he added “ Would you be interested in ordering something from the bar?  I could even discretely put some water on ice if desired. “

Walking into a store without even a rough idea wasn’t something he did.  Though apparently it was something that at least today seemed more common than he’d of ever expected.  Which was good, as Jasper’s products almost packaged ideas for basic pranks and even if someone was so thick they couldn’t think anything the opening was going to end with a prank-off that would provide ideas for days.

He said “ I always find it more fun to imagine the products in use myself. “ A truth as his mind always went to practicality.

As for the contest he wasn’t eligible to win.  Or even if he was he shouldn’t have been having played a hand in creating many of the products - thus knowing more than a couple off label uses for them.

With a smile he said “ At the end of the opening there will be a great prank-off.  I’ve heard quite a few ideas whispered in the corners of the shop but so far they are all missing a creative pizzaz of theatrics. “ Seriously, he was hoping for more than smoke bombs and glitter.

Smirking he replied “ It’s my mate’s shop.  I’m just hanging about today to ensure some of the pranks I see at Hogwarts next year are next level funny. “

He considered the cauldron that was a bit snappier than normal and starting to go darker from green with a more of a reddish hue accenting it.  It certainly wasn’t going to go the purple he hopefully thought in his earlier look it might.  Thankfully when it came to potions the color didn’t always manner, but it was a sign of a transition in them.

He said “ Definitely off. “ It certainly wasn’t going to make a tattletale toad.  Then he said “ Lets lower the temperature to see if that makes the Doxy eggs a bit less reactive and brings out the more enduring qualities of the other ingredients. “  Then he lowered the temperature as he continued “ Perhaps a single cauldron brew isn’t the right mix for this potion.  No harm in trying to boil it all down slowly till we get a paste then diluting the paste. “

It was a stretch of an idea.

With a shrug he said “ Surprisingly most the spell damage I see is accidents not curses being tossed.  Though I wonder how many of the falls are due to someone not ducking a Petrificus Totalus. “ A wonder that he never asked about and left that sort of asking to others who had a better feel for phrasing questions as he was too blunt.

Jasper’s question about the Snake Pit made him chuckle.  He barely could call it nightlife much preferring the clubs his muggle friends went out to that were filled of dancing.  He said “ Easy menu, decent tips.  Mostly, I’ve been having fun adding little illusions to accent some of the cocktails.  Even tough guys like cute if you make it mischievous. “

With a smirk he said “ I believe those accidents are called pranks. “  Which Jasper was right the combination of his influences was likely going to cause a whole new batch of accidents in the development phases.
