Family History

Unofficially, the O'Connor Sligo family members claim that they have ties Conchobhar, King of Connacht (d.970), and estranged ex-wife Queen Maedb, but there is no written record of this so it is merely speculation.

Officially, the first known recorded O'Connor Sligo is Brian Luighnech O Conchobhair, a high king of Ireland. These O'Connors held prominent positions in the affairs of Sligo, town and county. For several hundreds of years, into the mid 1700s, the O’Connors (Sligo) were Lords of Carbury and Sligo. However, in 1750 Donough and Teige O'Connor, were accused of heresy and being evil warlocks and were dispossessed of their properties which were divided up between Cromwellian adventurers and soldiers and were both killed.

However, one of Teige's sons, James O'Connor, a squib, born in 1735 somehow survived the upheaval of his family's possessions and properties and murder and fled to Dublin and later London where he learned the printing trade. James returned to his native town, Sligo Town where, with the assistance of a friend, he published a paper that covered troubles in Ireland. In that paper he was very critical of the way the royal party was running things and as a result, the vengeance of the very party he was criticizing was rained upon him. His printing office was annihilated, and as a result he fled to America with his pregnant wife Eliza, to Norfolk in 1764 nearly destitute of funds. Within a few months, he somehow became co-owner of the Norfolk and Portsmouth Herald, where he was senior Editor for until his death at age 60. In that time, his wife Eliza, who was a pureblood witch, gave birth to two sons by the name of Peter and Denis as well as two daughters named Mary and Ellen.

In America, Peter, Denis, Mary, and Ellen attended Salem Institute. After graduation the two boys got involved in American wizarding politics and slowly built up the wealth and prestige the O'Connor Sligo family once had when in Ireland. The girls found spouses among well-established and wealthy wizarding pureblood families. All four children of James and Eliza had three or four children of their own and the pattern has continued. Since then, the O'Connor Sligos have resurged and can now be found in Ireland, Scotland, England, and the United States.

O'Connor Sligos do not follow a set pattern and can be found in all walks of life except as criminals. O'Connor Sligos in general are very respectful to their elders and value knowledge. They are, however, leery about muggles and muggleborns because of what happened to Donough and Teige O'Connor. They treat halfbloods with respect, but an O'Connor Sligo would never marry a non pureblood and very often marry into the O'Connor Don or O'Connor Flay septs which have distant ties to the O'Connor Sligo families.

Also, unlike most pureblood families the title of Head of the Family, does not pass from father to son. Rather the Head is always the eldest living male at the time and when he dies, it passes onto the next oldest living male with O'Conner Sligo as the surname.

Family Seat

View of Riverside Manor, the O'Connor Sligo family seat
Once the O'Connor Sligos regained their wealth and influence they once had, two great-great grandsons of John O'Connor and his wife Eliza, named Calvin and Brady, with their wives and children, returned to Sligo Town in Ireland to establish the family seat there. That area had once belonged to their ancestors and they felt, even in spite of all the sorrow that had happened there, that was where the family seat belonged, not in the United States. Finding an undeveloped area south of Sligo Town on the Garavogue River, the two built a three storied, white stoned house that overlooked the Garavogue River on the east side, was surrounded by gardens on the north end, overlooked a green open lawn on the south side, and the west side was flanked by a coniferous forest.

The manor consisted of eight bedrooms, four bedrooms allotted to each brother and his family, several bathrooms, a formal living area, a study with hundreds of books,a formal dining and ballroom area, an informal living area for the children that includes a grand piano, and a kitchen. On the property, there is a small white stoned brickhouse of three bedrooms that is used by visitors. The family employed two house elves,a male and female, and still do, plus a governess and nanny for the children.

Inside the decor is Victorian in design, but not really gaudy or fancy. In the hallways, today there are moving portraits of all the family heads, their wives, and their children. In the study there are portraits of other O'Connor Sligo members and their families. In the formal living area is a moving portrait of the current head and his family that will be moved into the hallways when the head of the family dies and will immediately be replaced by a portrait of his heir and family that takes over the duties of being family head.

There are a few small fountains in the gardens and children of the family are often seen playing in the river in the summers. The head of the family and his family are expected to reside in the manor for as long as he is in charge of the duties. Ailing, elderly relatives are treated with respect and reside in the manor as well. However, any O'Connor Sligo fmaily member is allowed to reside there provided there is room for them.

Family Tree

(The one surviving branch managed to survive when James O'Connor (Sligo), son and squib of Teige O'Connor fled to America. All other O'Connor Sligo males at the time were killed in Ireland. There may have been a few females that survived the massacre in 1750, but all records of them have been lost in the upheaval. Peter, Denis, Mary, and Ellen are the children of James O'Connor.)
