Family History

An early graphite rendition of Conchobhar, King of Connachtfrom the family archives

The first known O'Conner Don in existence was Conchobhar, King of Connacht (d.970). He had six children and in turn each of his children had six children. Thus began the O'Conner Don family tree.

The O'Conner Don family was actually quite tolerant of those who were mixed blood or even muggleborn all the way up until the 1300s. Up until this century, the O'Conner Dons were gifted in Potions, Herbology, Divination, and Healing in general and would go out of their way to help those that needed help, muggles, witches/wizards, or halfbloods.

However, one December day in 1310, several of the O'Conner Don family members ended up being massacred by the very muggles they had tried to help when the illness the early O'Conner relatives had tried to help with healing magic and herbs hadn't worked. Those very people, all muggles, who had suffered from the illness and had asked for assistance hadn't gotten completely better (even though there had been some improvement) turned on the O'Conner family. They claimed they were evil witches and wizards in cahoots with the devil and there was an outrage in the village in Connacht where those relatives lived, ten of the O'Conner relatives, children included were murdered.

Four, however did escape the massacre and joined up with other relatives and told their story as well as wrote it down. And well ever since then, the O'Conner Don family has used a countless number of wards, charms, defensive, and yes perhaps some magic deemed less than ethical to protect themselves from muggles and which is a main reason they frowned down upon muggles and never willingly spoke to them, socialize with them, or anyone who has muggle blood in them. They do tolerate halfbloods, only because they need to in order to remain influential. It isn't a story anyone outside the O'Conner clan knows. But it does explain a lot.

The O'Conner Dons have almost always been rather well-off and influential and have always help positions of great power and influence. In modern days, the males almost always end up in some influential governmental position or law. The females of the family are taught at a young age to be incredible socializers, wives, and mothers. However, those females that do break away from that mold are almost always Healers, Diviners, or professors at magical schools. The two exceptions are Elizabeth O'Conner Vaelbe and Irene Cecily O'Conner, sisters who both hold high positions in either the British Ministry of Magic or the American one.

The O'Conner Don family not only was founded starting with Conchobar, King of Connacht, but the family also claims Turlough O'Connor (1088-1156) and Roderick O'Connor (1116-1198), two high kings of Ireland as direct ancestors.

View of the O'Conner Family Chapel

Because of the incident in 1310, the O'Conner Don family are extreme pureblood elitists. Anyone who marries or dates any with 'tainted blood' are disowned. All O'Conner members are fully aware of this so there haven't been any that have been completely disowned. The closest one to having that happened to them is Elizabeth O'Conner Vaelbe, a former Slytherin Prefect who believes all should be judged by ability rather than bloodline. However, she married into a respectable, old Bulgarian pureblooded wizarding family, so she is not crossed off the family tree. However, almost all of her ancestors pay no attention to her and her four children.

Also, the O'Conner Don family members have almost always been sorted into Ravenclaw or Slytherin as long as Hogwarts has been in existence. There are a few Hufflepuffs, but those sorted there are often looked down upon as that is the least prestigious house at Hogwarts. There have only been two Gryffindors, Irene, who now works in the International Magical Cooperation Department as a senior diplomat and her ancient relative Turlough O'Conner.

The O'Conner Don family is a family that is very spiritual/religious. They are Christian and follow Roman Catholicism. Whenever there is a wedding or a birth of a new child, the wedding or baptism ceremony take place in the chapel of the family's seat which is overseen by a part-time priest, who is also a wizard that is employed by the O'Conner family. When a child turns 18, before they are sent off into the world after their graduation from a magical school, a huge ceremony takes place in the chapel as well where the young man or woman is confirmed and takes on a saintly name as middle name. At the same time, they receive a plethora of gifts to help them get started on their own and receives a blessing from the priest that is said to remind the children always of the family motto-From God All Hope.

The O'Conner family members firmly believe in the old saying blood is thicker than water and have undying devotion to one another for the most part. All members are expected to be perfect ladies and gentlemen, are quite old fashioned in many mannerisms, value their family's history, traditions, and culture tremendously. The only things that the family members might perhaps value higher than traditions, history, culture, etc. are each other, ambition, power, and influence. They are very prideful. Also, nearly all members have been outspoken critics on limitations/censorship placed on magic (including the dark arts) because to them stifling any of those things is a mortal sin almost because knowledge is power. That and they firmly believe people are responsible enough to make good choices with less limitations. They were calling for less censorship, control, and limitations on magic related things long before the Order was ever founded.

Julia O'Conner on her wedding day, the first to not enter a prearranged marriage

The Head of the family, like most old pureblooded families is patriarchal in nature. The title passes from father to eldest son to the eldest son's oldest male. In the case that there is no male children of the heir, the title falls to the younger brother of the current head and to his eldest son.

The O'Conner family is known to give birth to a lot of children. They want to make sure their line doesn't die out and that there will always be people around to continue their traditions and keep their history alive. As far as finding spouses, for nine hundred years the girls were betrothed at a very young age in a prearranged marriage to preferably oldest sons of other old, well-bred, influential, and pureblooded families. If there were any siblings of the eldest boy a girl was betrothed to it was common practice to have all of her sisters wed siblings of the boy. However, by the late 1800s, this changed with the marriage of Julia O'Conner and Brogan James Calhoun. Julia was actually supposed to marry Benjamin Miles O'Conner (Flay) a man ten years her senior, but while at Hogwarts fell madly in love with Brogan Calhoun and managed to convince her family to call off her marriage to Benjamin and allow her to wed Brogan Calhoun. Ever since then, the family has done away with prearranged marriages and women of the O'Conner Don sept are now free to wed who they want provided they are marrying into another influential pureblood family.

Name Variations

There have been variations of the original surname of O'Conner. Variations include Connors because some people were just too lazy to include the O and they added the s by mistake when in reality the s was only ever used as a plural form that addressed all of the members of the O'Conner Don family. Then there has been O'Connor, which was changed that way by people who meant the O'Conner Don members in England because they wanted to make it more "English." Finally, there has been O'Connors and O'Conners because again people just added the s to the end when the s was actually only ever added for referring to more than one O'Conner Don family member. The current generation has tried to change their name back to the original surname of O'Conner, but as everyone knows old habits are oftentimes hard to break.

The Family Seat

The Family Manor in Connacht
The O'Conner Don manor is actually found just outside of Cong, a small village, which is on the border of Counties Mayo and Galway of Connacht. The whole area is known for underground streams, so the family always had a source of fresh water. The family manor is surrounded on all sides by various gardens that are charmed to make muggles think that they have almost missed a very important meeting or performance and must head to it immediately.

The interior rarely is changed by any current head of the family. Inside its confines are dozens and dozens of libraries that house old family history scrolls and magical family artifacts. They also house thousands of books when all added together. On the western side of the manor, there is a large lake that was magically made so family members could go swimming on hot days and never dries out as it is constantly filled by many of the natural underground springs found in the area. It's interior is very traditional in style, and decor. There is an elaborate family chapel where all family baptisms and weddings take place. The family also gathers here to worship on Sundays since all O'Conner Don family members are incredibly leery and dislike muggles.

There is a five bedroom guesthouse on the property with its own House Elf by the name of Nijia. She keeps the place clean as a whistle. There is a grand ballroom where the head's spouse throws incredible parities, balls, and galas. as well as a grandiose dining room where all meals are served or in cases of balls, galas, etc. where all food and drink is served. The family employs not only a private Healer, but also a governess and nanny for any children of the O'Conner Don family that is visiting as well as a part-time priest who is in fact a wizard himself.

The manor itself has seven bedrooms where relatives stay. The guesthouse is reserved for those that are not kin or not employed by the O'Conner Don family.

The manor itself employs a second House Elf who is the spouse of Nijia by the name of Mensy, who is in charge of the main house. The two have their own little four bedroom cottage surrounded by rose bushes that are enchanted to always bloom, no matter what the season and have a good view of the western lake on the property. The family actually treats their House Elves with much respect and as if they are kin.

Roleplay Notes:

All members of the primary branch are available to be played at HDK or Hogwarts except for Isabella O'Conner, Elizabeth O'Conner Vaelbe, Irene Cecily O'Conner, John O'Conner, and Kynan Patrick O'Conner. Please PM Isabella O'Conner, Kynan O'Conner, or Irene O'Conner if one seems interesting to you. I've only included living members right now. There are a lot more people in their family tree, but they have died already. The secondary ones, you have to pm to ask since a lot of those characters belong to another player.

Also, I am looking for spouses for a lot of the family tree, for ancestors prior to 1880. Simply pm Isabella O'Conner, Kynan O'Conner, or Irene O'Conner and we'll work something out if you want connections. The O'Conner family is known for marrying into other powerful, influential, and wealthy pureblooded families in any of the countries mentioned regarding where they are located.
