Biography

Laurel, lavender, forget-me-not, rose. He was frightened of small spaces and she knew it.

She'd said, "Papa, what's twins?"

"A twin is your brother or sister who grew with you in your Mamma's belly. Someone who looks like you, more than your other siblings. Sometimes they look completely alike-- your uncles Lu and Lo, for example. But sometimes they don't, like your brother Cade and sister Breanne."

Lucretia replied, "they're twins?"

"Yes, pet."

And so she smiled. "Me and Lorcan are twins."

Papa had laughed at that. "No, pet. Lorcan is older than you, and you didn't grow together in your Mamma's belly."

She frowned. "No. We're twins."

Lucretia knew things that her father didn't. She and Lorcan were just the same, and there was nothing more to that. She knew Lorcan was afraid of small spaces because she was, too.

It was mild and warm, and the roses had just begun to bud in the gardens at Pagefield Hall. The grass was lush and soft, and as Lorcan had gone the previous month without one of his breathing fits, he was allowed to accompany Lucretia outdoors to play.

"It's far, 'Cretia," he was saying to her, on his hands and knees at the foot of the shrubberies at the bottom of the house, peering sideways into the horizontal crawlspace that stretched beneath the house. They had been playing catch, Lucretia's doll abandoned face-up in the grass nearby. "We'll have to get Papa, I can't reach."

Lavender and laurel. The air was warm and sleepy. Lucretia's eyes narrowed.

"Can't you fit in there?"

"What?"

"You could crawl in."

Leaning back into a kneel, Lorcan frowned at her. "My trousers will get dirty, and Papa will be angry."

"You're afraid?"

"No," he interjected quickly. "I just--"

"I shan't wait around all day," Lucretia smoothed her sundress and turned, setting off to find her doll and leaving Lorcan kneeling there in the shrubbery.

She knew that she and Lorcan were twins because he would do whatever she wanted. She didn't even have to tell him; he knew.

Several minutes later, the ball dropped into the grass near where she sat with her doll, and Lucretia looked up to see Lorcan standing over her, trouser knees dirt-stained and his cheeks streaked with tears, his fists clenched.

She stood, evenly eye-to-eye with her brother. She took his hand, loosening his fingers out of their tight fist, and smiled at him; she didn't even care that his palm was dirty. Leaning toward him, she patted his face with her free hand.

"Hush, hush," she said to him, like Mamma would when any of them ever fussed. "You don't need to cry."

Forget-me-not, rose. She knew many things that others didn't.
