Wizarding Currency
Currency in the Wizarding World consists of three different coins. In decreasing order of value, they are: Galleon, Sickle and Knut. Gold, silver, and bronze, respectively. When broken down, there are 17 Sickles in a Galleon, and 29 Knuts in a Sickle, meaning that there are 493 knuts to a Galleon.

According to J. K. Rowling, the approximate value of a Galleon is 'About five Great British pounds, though the exchange rate varies!' .
This is consistent with the "textbooks" Rowling wrote for charity Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Quidditch Through the Ages, which states that US$250 million is equivalent to 34 million Galleons, which means that 1 Galleon â US$7.35. US$7.35 was the same as about GB£5 at the time of publishing.
With this information, we can calculate the value of wizarding currency in Muggle money. However, that only hold true for the present time exchange rates. In 1973, £5 (GBP) actually equated to $12.50 (USD) [£1 (GBP) being around $2.4 (USD) minimum and $2.50 (USD) at a maximum that year, but I picked $2.50 (USD) for convenience sake.]
The amounts below are approximate estimations of how much the exchange rates for each coin were in 1973:
1 Galleon | 1 Sickle | 1 Knut | |
---|---|---|---|
Pound sterling GBP | £5.00 | £0.29 | £0.01 |
U.S. dollar USD | $12.50 | $0.74 | $0.03 |
