continuing from this

"Do you see any clothes lying around here?"

He fixed Odi with the driest of looks, shirt left spread out across a rock so that it might dry. She smiled at him as irritatingly as possible and he wanted to wipe it clean off. Permanently preferably.

Without warning Marcus leapt back into the pool, the dilemma of having to walk around sopping wet forgotten in favour of that smile. He grabbed at her in an attempt to force her underwater. Couldn't smile all sweet at him if she was struggling to breath, could she?

"What the-"

In a second, the tables turned again. Without any warning, he finally shut up about his clothes long enough to jump back in, and she squeezed her eyes shut just in time before she was suddenly underwater. Perhaps she would have been fine if there had been time to breathe, but as it was, she didn't have much air. So the battle ensued.

Marcus took great satisfaction in how easily he pushed her underwater, even if her struggling splashed almost as much water in his face as she got from being submerged in the stuff. He wrapped his arms tight around her, forcing her down as long as he could until eventually letting her up. He didn’t exactly want to kill her, and besides, his arms were already burning.

“Oh dear.”

Marcus fixed Odi with a remorseless grin, more a baring of his teeth in predatory challenge than an actual smile. He still kept a tight grip of her wrists, a subconscious part of him aware of the danger she posed.

Surfacing was a struggle, but she had already been taken down way too easily, and there was no way Aphrodite Foxe was just going to stay down. Upon emerging at last, she tried not to make it so obvious that she was gasping for air, but breathing was, to say the leas, a very good thing. She really needed to start giving oxygen more credit.

"Quite the bastard, aren't you," she said (it wasn't a question) once she had the breath to. She was still in his grip and considered trying to wrench away before, instead, subverting expectations by leaning a little closer to him, eyes glittering in anger (and perhaps something undefined) barely contained. "Smells like a power complex. What's that feel like?"

(As if she wouldn't know.)

"Quite the bastard, aren't you."

Marcus just laughed. He remained firm in his belief that the entirety of humanity were bastards except him, an angry Aphrodite Foxe could do little to change that. She leaned closer and, not to be outdone, he did the same.

"Smells like a power complex. What's that feel like?"

"Oh I'm sure you know, hypocrite," he smirked. "Why, you scared?"

They were close now, very close. She was dripping wet and looking for a direction for her anger; he kept up a face of superiority. Both looked for cracks in the other's facade. They were close enough now to be on the edge of something.

Still, she did not back down.

It was not the first time that word had been used against her. Accusations of hypocrisy were irrelevant to Aphrodite. Sometimes you had to lie a little, and sometimes people took that the wrong way. It was for the best of everyone, and some simply did not see that. Not her problem.

Marcus, too, was a hypocrite in his own way. That accusation, she knew, would grit at him far more than it did her. He wouldn't be able to handle the idea. She would remember that.

"Of what? You?" A laugh, equal measures sarcastic and daring. "Please."

Odi laughed but Marcus's smirk barely flickered. Neither were willing to back down.

"You are. Go ahead and run away then, it's what you do best."

He made the proclamation with zero basis to it, because the fact of the matter was that though Marcus was insistent that he hated Aphrodite, he didn't actually know much about her at all.

"You haven't got the guts to do anything big, not really."

He said it as if he believed it when he did not have the slightest clue what he was talking about. Marcus said he hated liars, but he ran with the best of them. Perhaps that was part of the reason they found themselves in this situation. He wanted to think he was exceptional, but how different were they, really?

"You don't know anything about me." Despite four years of coexisting, they had never interacted much before this summer. How could he know anything? He thought he knew everything about everyone solely from his own outside perspective. She didn't think he cared enough about anyone but himself to take the time to look beyond the surface.

(Beyond the surface was messy. As much as Marcus wanted to insist he was different, she'd heard about his upbringing. He wasn't the type to deal with actual people.)

"You haven't got the guts to do anything big, not really."

Aphrodite Foxe was no Gryffindor. Their brave was her foolhardy, and she was no fool. But summer was a time for foolishness. And let it never be said that she did not have guts when she was in need of them...and if ever an occasion required them, it was most definitely proving Marcus Helvar wrong.

In a trademark move, she rolled her eyes. "You talk too much, Helvar."

And she leaned forward to press her lips to his.

"You don't know anything about me."

He didn't, and yet he was so certain he did. Aphrodite Foxe, with her sickly sweet exterior, was exactly what people assumed of snakes and that was all he needed to know.

She rolled her eyes and he opened his mouth to say something sharp. Marcus did not talk too much! That wasn't true! In fact, he barely talked to anyone, not seeing any reason when he knew he wouldn't like them. It was Aphrodite who talked too much, no one cared what she said.

And then she'd pressed her lips to his and he forgot what he'd planned on saying. It appeared that Odi was a bit more unpredictable than he'd imagined, but Marcus didn't let that bother him. A second or two passed in surprised stillness before his hands moved from her wrists to her hair, entangling the two together as he kissed back with the ferocity of someone who even now was certain this was still a competition.

And Marcus was going to win.
