Gods, there she was. The bane of Hogwarts. The taste of gum turned to ash in his mouth.

People thought, because Beatrice was quiet and small, that she wasn't a bitch. They weren't paying attention. She was self-involved and arrogant. Always looking down on people. Always playing the victim card and thinking that it excused her behavior. Sandy had never been fooled.

She was a bad smell both at the castle and at camp. Thought because she knew words she was worthwhile. The truth was that she wasn't worth anything. He'd told her so a million times.

"Hey worthless! Whatcha readin?"

His voice carried cleanly through the clearing. His wide, bright smile showed a good many teeth, in perfect emulation of a predator closing in. He chewed open-mouthed on his gum as he stalked closer. Finally, he was upon her, looking down at the upside-down words of her book.

She was always reading. Like it made her any better at classes. The truth was she was a bit dim, even if she was wordy as hell. Beatrice had never learned important things, like positive attitudes and when to close a book. His eyes met hers for a moment, like waves crashing against one another, and then Sandy spat his wad of gum between the pages.

Beatrice was having a perfectly good time reading, thank you very much. She didn't need distractions from the other idiots in the school, and particularly could not be bothered with the drama of some of her so called friends-- even the library wasn't safe from the gossiping anymore. And so, she'd found herself sat outside, with a book resting upon her lap and the outside world quite happily ignored.

That was until the dirtbag that was Lysander Stone decided it would be a good idea to interrupt her studies-- although it wasn't really studies but that would look much better when she reported him later, again, to a professor-- with his meaningless presence. Although most people were one level of stupid, Sandy, as he was known (which was, for further reference, an absolutely idiotic nickname) was an entirely new one. Not only was he arrogant and annoying, but for some strange reason, he always seemed to presume that every girl in the school-- despite their own intelligence and ability to see past him-- wanted to snog his disgusting ash-covered lips, not that she was looking there.

As much as she wanted to simply ignore him, she was fully aware that the gnat of a person would not stop pestering her until she actually responded to him. It was truly unfortunate, and slightly ridiculous, how she was allowing him to dictate her life. Instead, she looked up, a mixture of expectancy and unimpression resting upon her face as she watched him grin menacingly, slightly cautious to see what he'd do.

"It's truly none of your business, Stone."

Blue eyes met blue as she waited for him to make the first move, almost daring him to do something. And then he spat his gum out straight onto her page.

"You're disgusting." She stated simply, as she waited for him to fix what he'd just done, "Now fix it."

"Now fix it."

"nOw FiX iT."

He echoed her words in a slightly higher pitch, adding a kind of sing-song element to her ridiculous demands.

"You know what it'll cost."

Not that she'd ever paid it. For some reason, the awful little Ravenclaw was immune to every single one of Sandy's charms. She was impossible to figure out. All girls were, but it went tenfold so for Beatrice.

Really, all it would take to remove the gum was one quick pinch. Just pick the gum up and throw it on the ground somewhere. A prissy kid such as Beatrice would never do so, and so she was at his mercy.

"Not even asking for tongue or nothing. You can tell all your friends anything you like about it."

He was immature, that much had always been obvious to the blonde, in fact it was part of the reason she could not stand him. Not to mention the fact that her voice did not sound like that. He was absolutely ridiculous. Bea felt her eyes roll up into her skull, as she ignored his obvious ridiculousness.

They both knew what it would cost. He'd been trying to get her to lock lips with him since first year, and Beatrice Caulfield did not want to catch a rare strain of magical mono, or just any other kissing based diseases. It was truly disgusting, she almost gagged at the thought.

"I'm not a dramatic person, but I would actually rather die than lock lips with you."

She refused to allow it to happen, and she certainly wouldn't be telling her friends if it happened-- when hell froze over.

"Now move the gum off my book."

He shrugged. It was her loss.

"Got my spit on it. Makes it my book, doesn't it?"

Except Beatrice would never adhere to the lickers-keepers rule. For someone so apparently straightlaced and uptight, she had a real disregard for rules that didn't suit her.

"It's not like boys are lining up to be with you, you know. Normally we go for the pretty ones. I'm being generous here."

To show his obvious and tremendous goodwill, Sandy reached out with a two slim fingers, plucked the pinkish wad from the page, and returned it to his mouth. The gum now had a vaguely inkish taste alongside the strawberry. Making a face, Sandy cut his losses swallowed the wad. In moments, he was digging through his pockets for another.

Bea waited for him, eyes holding their gaze, focused in on his face. How dare he shrug at her? Instead of getting annoyed about it, she simply huffed out the breath that she was holding and waited for him to make his move-- either towards her lips, and get hexed, or to remove the gunk from her book.

"I didn't realise that you could read."

Books usually were useless if the reader was an idiot, which Lysander Stone entirely was. Her voice was cool, as she waited.

"Books are redundant when in the hands of idiots."

And then he dared to push his luck further. It wasn't like anyone else would defend her at camp, especially not with that lazy excuse of a camp director in charge. She'd just have to wait until school time came back around again to get him back. She was pretty, right?

Instead of getting upset, the blonde simply scoffed, looking at him as her voice, dripping with sarcasm, spoke "Why thank you. How very benign of you."

But the gum was moved out of the way, and Bea slammed her book shut-- great, now it was scented. Wand held low, she quietly muttered a spell, and smugly watched as the antlers grew out of his head. That was much better.

Books were, by and large, useless. He could read, but not well. Enough to scrape by in classes, except for History of Magic, which was impossible. Quietly, he wondered what redundant meant. Did she mean retarded? He wasn't. Probably.

"Why thank you. How very benign of you."

What the hell did benign mean?

"So is that a-"

Snap!

The closure of her book, in Beatrice's dramatic fashion, was an end to the conversation.  She saw some great symbolism in the act where there was none. He found some gum, unwrapped and slid the thing into his mouth. He wouldn't offer her agy, given that they weren't about to lock lips.

The girl aimed her wand (did she think she was subtle?) and Sandy grinned and watched. What spell did she think was -

"What was that for?" he asked, half-grinning and feeling the protrusions from his skull. He didn't hate them. They felt kind of regal, like a real stag. Maybe she was finally starting to lighten up.

Thank god, she'd managed to shut him up, maybe she should start snapping her books closed more often, particularly when he was acting stupidly in their joint classes. Feeling rather smug, Beatrice Jane Caulfield watched him, calmly. Instead of moving, she waited for him to simply move, as the symbolism of her closed book weighed into the situation. It representing the closing of a door, and yet another pointless rejection for Lysander Stone. In reality, it was just a closed book, but in this scenario, it was important, it was key.

He did that stupid grin, and her scowl deepened as she stared up at him, starting to feel much more vexed than ever before, as she watched him.

"It was just a reminder."

An innocent shrug, as she looked at him.

"That I will never, not under any circumstances, kiss you."

sometime in the future

"Wait so did you ever kiss him?" Asked the blonde, looking over at Bea, who rolled her eyes.

"Of course I did."

back to the present

"Ever."
