It was beautiful and open and filled to the brim with humming life energy. The curtains rustled quietly in the breeze from the open door and were pristine white. Foliage swayed against the glass, casting shadows to skip along the floor and the tightly folded bed-sheets. The scent of the plants filled the Infirmary, dewy and fresh.

It was everything and nothing like the Hospital Wing run under Don Rafael’s careful eye. In crystals and smoke it was reborn, slightly altered, though channeled through the same spirit.

Beds lined each of the walls adjacent the entrance, while a solitary table sat in the middle of the room. Clean sheets of parchment written with Avery’s most careful handwriting were stacked in the centre. Quills of rich colours stuck in three containers.

Yellow like the sun, burning at midday, glinting with a darker gold on its reverse side. Brown like the forest floor, dangers hidden under moss and piles of leaves as a darker green splashed along the edges. Black like spilled ink, ravens at nighttime, and when tilted towards the light, a red hue could be seen along the bottom of the feather.

Take your pick, the folded card prompted.

Once a quill was selected, the student would write their information on a crisp piece of parchment. The moment their last t was crossed and i was dotted, the quill would transform into a snake. The snake would wrap around the student’s hand, twisting and coiling on itself, though fangs were noticeably absent as it opened its mouth.

Beware the familiar, the card would remark now, if any of the students bothered to look away from the creature.

The snake was harmless, a mere replica of its poisonous and in some classes, deadly, breed. It served as a warning, a hint, a preview of the focus for this summer’s study. Mostly though, was just a fun show of magic that Avery took very very little part in.

The transfiguration would fade as the student left the Infirmary, turning back into a vibrant quill to serve as a reminder and participants would now have no excuse for not bringing a quill.

He hadn't bothered joining the staff of the Hospital Wing this past term.

It was extracurricular, with the emphasis on the extra, and therefore, in a year where he needed to make up for the lost one, Orion had decided it'd be better to avoid the detention vacuum the Head Nurse had turned it into.

Still, he had not lost interest in what being a part of the healing crew brought with it. Even he wasn't dense enough to believe that it was not important to know the basics of medical attentiveness. That being able to stitch a cut or correctly apply a bandage, not to mention the rudimentary healing charms, was better left avoided in the dangers the magical world presented. So, with that in mind and the fortunate circumstance of not having to deal with Don Rafael, Orion had entered the elaborate greenhouse with an open outlook on expectations.

The infirmary itself seemed too tidy. Someone had bothered to press the sheets, puff the pillows, and leave the table housing the sign-up materials enviabky organized. His lips curled into a frown, making judgments with each passing glanxe around the room. While it made sense that the room would be organized before it received patients, Orion did not have appreciation for the attention to detail it might suppose.

But he walked up to the sign-up table anyway, figuring that he'd at least have a few people he knew to lean on for whatever case studies the summer would offer.

"And I'm the first one," he whined. Exhaling out his annoyance, he took hold of the black quill (obviously) and filled out the information. Much went unnoticed, like how the glimmer of red shown within the darkness or how the sign-up sheet reacted to which quill he had selected. Notoriously oblivious, Orion only wondered why they were being asked things about snakes. If there was one way to perk his interest, it'd be-

The Red-Bellied Black Snake is more commonly found where: Coasts or bushes? Bushes

"Wow!" His eyes widened with surprised as the quill changed from feather to scales, extending over his thumb to wrap around his wrists. The shock left him as swiftly as it had come, replaced with astonished awe.

"This is amazing," he said aloud, move his hand up over his head to watch the black snake with its red belly hiss and continue to coil. Its head fixed on him, mouth opening as if to strike but revealing its absence of fangs. Smiling, he completely forgot that he had bullshitted his answer that probably identified what kind of snake this was. Now there wasn't a trace of apprehension if this was what he had to look forward to.

Knowledge was survival, and that was why Kyan had chose to sign up for the Hospital Wing. The Wizarding World was a dangerous place and knowing how to fix up scrapes and bumps always came in handy, especially when you had a habit of finding trouble like he did.

The first thing he noticed as he entered the wing was the crisp white sheets billowing softly in wind, with it bringing the fresh, earthy scent from a plant dancing in the window sill. Things were serenely calm and clean, It was almost like he had fell into some dream. But everything was too white, it hurt his eyes and Kyan couldn't help but feel somewhat suspicious about the whole set up (or perhaps that was just how hospitals felt?). His left hand swept back his hair back calmly as he moved towards the table in the center of the room. He was being paranoid. He just had to sign a sheet and leave. It was easy.

Take your pick.

Kyan stared at the note before noticing that there were three separate quills. He deliberated taking the black one, but it was too obtuse. Gold represented winners and he was a winner. He slowly leaned forward drew the Yellow Quill from the swirling gold ink and glided it across the sign up sheet.

The Inland Taipan is the most venomous snake in the world: True or False? True

The moment he wrote the final letter, his quill transformed into a snake and magically coiled around his wrist. Lifting it up closer to his face to examine it he grinned, admiring its golden emblazoned skin. "Whoa! Cool." It opened its mouth bearing its fangs and hissed, but Kyan knew it was a magically charmed somehow. He was certain It couldn't do any serious harm.

Turning for the door he took the snake with him. Examining it, he strolled casually for the exit. Was this the worlds most dangerous snake, like question he had on the sign up? As he reached the door to leave the wing, it turned magically back into the quill it had been before. Perhaps this was a dream? Kyan shrugged and headed off towards Sydney Town Hall for some food.

He would have preferred the snake but at least he got a new Quill out of it.

He was everywhere.

She could smell him in the slight breeze -- incense that hadn't yet been lit, feel him in the air, see him in the rose quartz on the windowsill.

Vega very nearly walked straight back out again. She would have done so, too, if it hadn't been for the fact that she needed to be signed up as an Infirmary assistant to use the potions stores.

Which has more venom: Eastern or Western Brown Snake? no idea, but I bet they'd both be wild in a potion.

If Vega Nettlebed had been the sort of person who frightened easily, she might have screamed as the quill began to morph, as slick feathers shifted into slippery scales. Luckily, she wasn't the sort of person who frightened easily. Instead of screaming, she stood there in perfect silence, perhaps looking like she might have been a little bit afraid -- even though she wasn't.

When she saw that there were no fangs, however, her tune promptly changed. With a roll of her eyes -- she bet Avery was behind it, this stupid little joke -- Vega tried to shake the snake-quill from her wrist and turned on her heel.

She was beginning to wonder whether putting up with the Hufflepuff was worth the potions, after all.

The Red-Bellied Black Snake is more commonly found where: Coasts or bushes? Probably the bushes. It might be difficult to hunt otherwise.
