MAGICAL MONO: A GUIDE
Summer 1952

Magical Mono has come to Camp Loki! Here's what you need to know...

Infection: Similar to the Muggle version of the disease, Magical Mono is spread through kissing an infected person during the incubation period.

Incubation: After coming into contact with an infected person, you will be highly infectious for a period lasting from 7 to 14 days. No symptoms manifest during this time, which means it's very easy to unwittingly pass it on to others.

Symptoms: Symptoms include all those of the common cold e.g. coughing, sore throats, runny noses, general aching pains, and fatigue. Several days after these first symptoms appear, bright spots will follow in either red, yellow, green, or blue, or orange. The first four colours correspond to the Hogwarts houses e.g. if you catch it off a Gryffindor, you'll end up with red spots; if it's a Hufflepuff, expect a yellow break-out, etc. Orange spots will appear if you catch it off a student from a different magical school. If you kiss people from multiple houses/schools, you'll get all the relevant colours of spots e.g. kissing a Ravenclaw and a Slytherin = blue and green spots. These spots can last anywhere from 3 to 14 days. The disappearance of the spots marks the end of the infection, and patients will feel completely normal after this occurs.

Treatment: Simple/mild pain potions and Pepperup potions can be used to treat the cold-like symptoms, but there's nothing to make those hideous spots disappear, so you'll just have to wait it out or hunt down some concealer.

New to this strand: Infection can only be passed through kissing, unlike in previous strands where mouth-to-mouth contact was not necessary. The spots last up to five days longer now than they did before, which suggests that this is a more persistent strand than those of previous years. The orange spots are a brand new addition too, and have most likely developed to account for the number of non-Hogwarts students at Camp Loki.

Patient Zero: Pax Fellwater, a Ravenclaw who's just finished his third year. He caught Magical Mono at the very end of the 1951-52 term, and is highly infectious from 1 July to 14 July. Completely unaware, he thought that a game of Spin The Bottle would be fun.

Where you come in: An outbreak isn't an outbreak until it catches as many people as it can! We all know everybody loves a good snog, so have some fun with this. If your character kisses Pax or another character that has already kissed Pax during the game (or after it!), you'll probably catch Magical Mono. Remember that your spots will correspond to the house of the person you kissed. Your character can catch magical mono from any point after 1 July 1952, and it's definitely possible that their infection may carry over into term if they catch it towards the end of summer. Bear in mind that there's an infectious incubation period of 7-14 days before any symptoms start to show! Post all your Magical Mono-related threads below, so that we can follow everybody's spots! Please PM Calypso Ross with any questions.

MAGICAL MONO: AN UPDATE!
Summer 1952

Uh oh! Something's gone wrong somewhere along the line... Magical Mono isn't going down without a fight. From 1 August onwards, campers will notice a slight change in the disease's effects on its victims.

Infection: Magical Mono is still spread through kissing an infected person during the incubation period. If you have previously had the initial summer strand (see above), you will become infectious again from 1 August to 8 August, even if you have recovered from the first bout of the illness. You may not necessarily show symptoms.

Incubation: After coming into contact with an infected person, you will be highly infectious for a period lasting from 1 to 7 days. If you have previously had the initial summer strand, you will automatically become infectious for 7 days, starting from 1 August.

Symptoms: Symptoms begin to manifest between the third and seventh day of the infectious period. The symptoms are the same as those in the initial strand, but with a few key differences:
  • victims of this strand might not catch the common cold symptoms.
  • the spots on new victims are much bigger -- nearly double in size -- and they have become extremely itchy.
  • previously cured patients/victims may discover a reappearance in their old spots. These will, again, be double the size, and may or may not be itchy too.
Symptoms can last anywhere from 14 to 28 days. The disappearance of the spots marks the end of the infection, and patients will feel completely normal after this occurs.

Treatment: Simple/mild pain potions and Pepperup potions can be used to treat any cold-like symptoms; simple/mild pain potions or herbal remedies might relieve the itchiness; again, there's nothing to make those hideous spots disappear, so you'll just have to wait it out or hunt down some concealer.

New to this strand: Infection can still only be passed through kissing, unlike in previous strands where mouth-to-mouth contact was not necessary. Symptoms also occur much earlier and last much longer, which further emphasises this strand's persistence.

Patient Zero: There is no official Patient Zero for this sub-strand of the virus. Overnight, victims who are currently still suffering from the first strand might find themselves with bigger and itchier spots. Alternatively, cured victims might find themselves breaking out again!

Where you come in: An outbreak isn't an outbreak until it catches as many people as it can! We all know everybody loves a good snog, so have some fun with this. If your character kisses another character who has had or currently has Magical Mono, you'll probably catch it too. Remember that your spots will correspond to the house of the person you kissed. Your character can catch this sub-strand of magical mono from any point from 1 August 1952 onwards, and it's definitely possible that their infection may carry over into term. Bear in mind that symptoms won't show until at least 3 August 1952! Post all your Magical Mono-related threads below, so that we can follow everybody's spots!
