17th August 1951
6:30am - sunrise

Why he had agreed to be awake at this time of the day was beside him. Of course he woke up somewhat early, he liked to go on a run for the morning, it helped keep him in shape when it came to Quidditch, trials would be happening again when they got back to Hogwarts. He intended to be on the team, for sure, Papa would be proud, he always was when he made the team.

However, this earliness was, to his knowledge, extreme. He had woke half an hour earlier, pulled on the nearest clothes, throwing his hood up and left for the dueling ground, hands shoved into the pockets of the jumper. It was quite peaceful, as he headed towards the lake, of which he had, along with Ryan, Finny and Zac took the time to set up the arena.

The air was silent, a small breeze let him remain cool, tousling with the few strands of his raven black hair that was not covered by his hood. The sky was painted blue, the sun was still rising but the oranges, the pinks and the reds had disappeared, not a single cloud in the sky. It would be a lovely morning... once he had woke up properly that was.

A yawn escaped his lips. He wasn't the first there, but his arrival appeared to prompt some kind of movement, people were already in the stands waiting, watching; when had they got here? "Are we all ready?" He asked, eyeing the dueling contenders before leading them out onto the platform in the water.

The water was calm, but no matter how steady he used the stepping stones to reach the platform, he was still nervous of falling in. He did not want to wake whatever was sleeping in that water. Wand in hand, he stood upright in the center, waiting, letting the contenders get into place. "Let's get this thing going," He managed to find a smile from somewhere.

"The sooner this is over, the sooner I can go back to bed," He chuckled a little, trying to find some kind of enthusiasm, three... two... one... duel!" Wand thrust in the air, red sparks emitting from his wand, signalling the beginning of the duel, and what would hopefully be a short match. He wanted to go back to sleep.

One successful disarming spell per duelist.

It was way too early.

Rebecca wasn't one for early mornings. She preferred to hide in her bed, in the warm, trying to catch up on the sleep she had missed the night before. How was she meant to concentrate on this duel? Not well, if she was still recovering from being so tired.

The girl felt the shaking of the platform, and reminded herself that if she didn't wake up now, she'll wake up from being blasted into the cold water all around them. It may have been summer, but that didn't mean the lake would be a sauna. Besides, she was going to win this one. It was Kadence, and two first years.

She could win this. Or at least, not fail so bad as last time (then again, she had silent cast in that one, so she didn't fail exactly).

The call came for duel, red sparks shooting into the sky.

Her plan was already sorted. It was just the targets she had to figure out this time around.

Kadence was the biggest problem. But she'd much rather not give the girl  a reason to shoot at her within the first round.

So who then? The next person she spotted was Ernestine Baumgartner, a name she only knew because of this duel. Maybe the girl was good. Or nice. But she didn't know her, so had no idea what to assume.

Still, it was going to be her. Poor girl - it was just bad luck in where she had stood.

Wand out at Ernestine, she called out rather lightly: "Ventus Redimio!" Then, with a friendly smile, "Sorry! Good luck for the duel, by the way!"

Hopefully, she wasn't making enemies, both in real life and within this duel.

She was jittery.

Today's early morning was much different than other early mornings at home or even at camp. Ernestine wished she had a little bit more time to psych herself up, or even a chance to watch other competitors go first, but her name was on the roster and she had to  let the stepping stones take her to her fate.

She wanted to win. It would be great if she could win. But Rebecca- Mia's last opponent- Ernestine knew she could silent cast. Naoi, she had no idea, she hadn't' watched her match. Neither Brannen- but that just meant she would have to keep her head on a swivel. If she could get one in a bind, that would mean-

Red sparks drew her eyes. There was the start of the match!

With all the speed she could muster, Ernestine aimed for Kadence and shouted: "Vineyard!" If she could get her major unknown out of the way, she could focus on laying damage into Silvers.

The sun was already beginning to warm Vanessa's back, its rays reaching out towards the platform on which the four girls stood. A gentle wind blew through the surface of the lake, the water lapping at the edges of the platform. Though the weather was calm, the atmosphere cheery, Vanessa still felt the nerves coming on her.

She wasn't as anxious as she was during the first match, sure, but this duel was a whole different story. Three other girls were matched up against her, and by the looks of it, at least two of them seemed to be older. They had experience, capability...yes, she herself had done quite well during her first match, but would that beginner's luck carry on into the second duel?

Sparks once again initiated the match, and before Vanessa could even raise her wand, two girls had cast their spells. Her heart thumped in her chest even more loudly. She was outmatched. She was in too deep. She was out of her league.

The older girls looked familiar, Vanessa believed she had seen them around the Quidditch pitch. The other one, not so much. How in the world was she to decide who to attack first if she hadn't a clue of how skilled they were?

No one had attacked her yet, though, and she supposed that it would be best to team up on someone who posed the biggest threat. One of the older girls, for sure. Swiftly raising her wand, Vanessa turned towards the older girl [Kadence] and attempted to cast a spell.

"Petrificus Totalus!"

Well, it worked.

The other two younger girls had also been successfully casting spells, both at Kadence, thankfully. Probably because of everything that had been fired at her, the older girl didn't react. Which was a shame. It didn't, however, mean that the spell she had been saving for her was going to go to a different person.

Just another spell would.

Firstly, she directed her wand at Vanessa, deciding to keep it mixed between the two girls so they didn't seem victimised. "Incendio!" she called, attempting to set fire to Vanessa's robe. She had tried this last time, but the whole thing hadn't worked as well as she had hoped. Maybe this time, something would catch fire, creating the smoke she needed for her next spell.

"Fumeus Obscuro!" she called, this time with her wand pointed at Kadence. With a cloud of smoke around her, she hoped the girl wouldn't be able to cast many spells at her, or anyone, to be honest.

It was a shame she didn't have more time to cast more spells. It was rather fun, actually. She never understood how some people managed to cast several spells all at once - she'd have to ask.

"How are you finding it?" she called out at the other two, not sure why she was trying a conversation in the middle of a duel. Probably to keep her awake. That sounded about right. (Or it could have just been a result of her tired mind. Both worked.)

It worked! Kadence's legs were wrapped in vines that grew magically from the platform. Ernestine felt pride for a second before she was swept up by a gust of wind. Ventus Redimio! She couldn't move! Who cast it?

"Sorry! Good luck for the duel, by the way! Silvers! At least she was nice. She gave Rebecca a tight smile in acknowledgement- Ernestine wasn't much for talking while there was a task to focus on. Brannen hadn't acted at all- and she had gotten hit by a Petrificus Totalus by Naoi. She would be down for little.

Ernestine didn't know any counter spells for Ventus Redimio, which meant she was just going to have to go through with her original plan. Pointing her wand at Rebecca she cried "Expelliarmus!" in an attempt to disarm her.

She hoped the previous spell aimed at Naoi worked though- she could probably use that to her advantage.

Her first spell had landed! And what a relief. Vanessa couldn't help but feel bad for the now non-responsive older girl, however, as those two spells coming from her and the other duelist must have really packed a punch. Oh well. The girl would probably be occupied for the moment, so Vanessa quickly turned her focus toward the other older opponent who had now directed their attention towards her.

It seemed as if the younger gal had not attempted to attack Vanessa yet, and for that she was grateful. No longer feeling sluggish from the early morning time, Vanessa's mind raced with her next move. Perhaps she could attempt to kill two birds with one stone?

The shining sun shone in her eyes for a moment, and she squinted with a hand above her eyes to see through the rays. On an offhand though, she couldn't help but notice the beautiful day. She would have to go practice some broom riding later. Quickly shaking off her daydreaming, Vanessa whipped her wand out at the older girl [Rebecca], attempting to cast a spell.

"Conjunctivitis!"

Then, she spun around to face the younger girl, hoping to sneak in another attack. Pointing her wand at the girl [Ernestine], she attempted to cast a spell as she called out,

"Wingardium Leviosa!"

Aha! The charm worked excellently after Silvers cast her spells. She didn't have her wand! She couldn't defend against what she was going to pull out next. Though her expression was set in "grim determination", Ernestine was quite happy.

Now that Naoi's robes were on fire, she could cast Creo Exessum at Silvers. Maybe. It was a spell beyond her level- it seemed like a brilliant idea just a few moments ago, when she was planning. But now she felt doubt. If she couldn't pull it off, that meant it was a lost opportunity. The disarming charm would've been for nothing.

Ernestine raised her arm in Rebecca's direction and called out "Petrificus Totalus!" If this worked- it was simpler than Creo Exessum- she could redirect attention to Naoi. Brannen, she felt uneasy about; she still hadn't moved at all.

Unfortunately, it seemed that luck was not on Vanessa's side for this duel. Before she even had a chance to successfully cast anything, her robes caught on fire, flames quickly creeping up the black threads, thanks to that older girl. Her mind panicked, she didn't know any charms to put it out! A hesitant glance at the lake confirmed what she would have to do.

She internally groaned, and despite the urgency of the growing flames, a childish pout crossed her face as she felt her temper flare. Vanessa knew that what had happened was perfectly fair...but still! She could feel a little upset if she wanted to! Without regard for the still ongoing duel between the two other girls, Vanessa stomped over to the edge of the platform, attempting to dunk the ends of her robes into the murky waters. [Physical action?]

At least it would dry quick, Vanessa grumpily thought to herself. The sun was shining ever higher now and the heat looked like it would beat down once noontime came around. Watching the other two girls fight it out, Vanessa discreetly shot a glum glare in the direction of the girl who had caught her robes on fire.

She had nothing against the girl.

Really.

EXCEPT THAT HER ROBES WERE ON FIRE BECAUSE OF THE MEANY GIRL!

Ernestine acknowledged that she had said something with a smile, but the younger girl was too focused to talk to her. Too focused on disarming her. Rebecca felt the wand slip from her grip, grasping wildly in the air as if she could somehow counter the spell by doing that.

Her plan hadn't really taken other people's actions into consideration. Especially not spells like this. Which changed pretty much everything.

And everyone was firing spells at her! It wasn't fair at all. (It was perfectly fair. Only Rebecca's perfect plan and preparations seemed to be diving sharply.)

She had to pick herself up and keep going. The most important thing to do was to grab that wand back. She wasn't going to enter a fist fight - this was a duel. She needed her wand.

Almost diving, she tried to snatch her wand back up from the ground. If pure determination didn't help her, she wasn't certain what she'd be able to do.

If only they could carry another wand around with them. Then she'd just be able to summon that other one. Or use the second wand. The idea of several wands was sounding very appealing, and Rebecca wasn't certain why.

Round 3:

A2. Vanessa manages to get her robes in the water, though the fire was already out!

A3. Excellent form on that dive, but Rebecca doesn't quite make it to her wand...

Almost if by magic (hehheh), the fire was out completely. Wonderful! But not really. Instead of putting out the flames, Vanessa had ended up with soaked robes, which would only slow her down. A look of irritation crossed her face, and honestly, all she wanted to do was stomp her feet on the ground.

Really, she was quite furious. And an angry 11-year old can be pretty scary when she wants to. Tromping back to where she stood before, she watched the duel play out in front of her. The younger girl had just finished casting a spell, and the girl who had got Vanessa's robes on fire was...flailing on the ground.

Without a wand! Perfect. An evil smile crossed Vanessa's face, as she prepared to (hopefully) exact revenge on the girl. Yes, yes, she knew it was just a duel, but... but why couldn't she return the favor?

Whipping out her wand (rather aggressively, actually), Vanessa determinedly pointed it at the older girl [Rebecca] and attempted to cast a spell.

"Wingardium Leviosa!!!"

The spell hit before Silvers could regain her wand. How grand! It had been a smart choice to change spells after all. Ernestine tried to not let the accomplishment get to her head, but it was hard. Here it was, the two older girls were down and she had yet to take any damage. It was almost if the sun that shone that morning was bestowing her power.

But she hadn't won yet. So she would keep her ego on the ground. First, to finish off Silvers- she would go for another simple charm. Hopefully this one would do a bit more damage. "Wingardium Leviosa!" Ernestine bellowed, flicking her wand at Rebecca and hoping the forcefulness of the incantation would give it a boost.

There was an echo of her charm that startled her. Naoi. She had almost forgot- luckily Naoi's wand was pointed at Rebecca. If her charm worked (or alternatively, Vanessa's) Silvers wouldn't be able to keep her busy any more, and Naoi would turn attention to her. Hoping that in the seconds after her first cant she could pull off another one, Ernestine swung her wand arm at Vanessa and cried, "Vineyard!"

She only had to last until the last round.

She was going to fail this duel.

And it had gone so well to begin with. Her plan had worked as she had hoped. She got all the right spells out. And she was against two first years! And the only other her age, Kadence, had forfeited the duel!

But she still didn't have her wand, and they were still shooting spells at her. Ones that would make getting her wand quite a difficult task if they worked.

So she had to get it now. If she didn't - she'd be stuck. She'd lose this duel and spend all that time hovering in the air.

Rebecca gritted her teeth. She clenched her jaw. Took a deep breath. Blinked out the tiredness from her eyes.

She was going to do this. Reaching out as quickly as she could, she tried to snag her wand again. She had to be able to do this. Picking up a wand couldn't be hard. Well, it was when a million spells hit her. But she had to be able to do it. Fighting off the spells, she would be able to grab this wand.

Next year, she had to do a lot better than this to keep up her duelling.

Last round.

She still hadn't taken any damage. Good. Now that Naoi was tied up with a bit of greenery, she could pull out one last spell. Something that caused damage- she wasn't confident that if Vanessa cast a spell on her, it wouldn't bring her down and cause Naoi to win the match.

Silvers was up in the air. Brannen was out on the ground. Just one last spell against one last opponent and she might just win.

It would be a bit cruel, Ernestine supposed, to do it, but it was just a game- wasn't it? She hoped Naoi wouldn't hate her too much after she pulled this one. With calm face and steeled eyes, Ernestine calls out "Incendio!", aiming her wand directly at Vanessa's robes. If it did catch, that would be two scorch marks on perfectly good clothes. Maybe, after the match of course, she could make it up to her.

Yes! Vanessa internally fist pumped as the spell successfully hit Rebecca, suspending the girl in the air. Maybe her luck was finally turning around. Of course, as with all hopes and wishes, they were quickly crushed to a dust as another spell reached her ears...

"Incendio!" echoed the call, riding across the gentle waves of the lake.

The spell itself was meant to catch material on flames, but it also ignited a fire in Vanessa's eyes. Not again! she thought to herself. Still, the situation was rather funny, and she let a grin escape onto her face. "How original!" she teased the other girl. The irritation had quelled inside her, and she reminded herself that it was just a game, just practice, nothing serious.

Perhaps it was just the competitive spirit inside her that made her take things so seriously. It didn't hurt to keep trying though, and it was that thought that kept her pushing forward. Even if she lost, she wouldn't go down without getting another hit in!

Raising her (slightly entangled in vines) wand, Vanessa pointed it towards the girl [Ernestine], and attempted to cast a spell.

"Expelliarmus!" she exclaimed, good-naturedly.

Now she was up in the air! By two spells, as well, which meant it was going to take some time for her to fall back down.

Rebecca couldn't believe her luck. Not only did she not have her wand on her, but she was floating in the air, unable to get it any more. So there was basically nothing she could do but watch the duel happen. Watch the vines twist out, the spells firing, the girls duelling.

Was this what she looked like when she was duelling as a first year?

May as well enjoy the show.

Settling into an (almost) comfortable position in the air, she pulled out the muffins she had meant to eat as breakfast, and began to eat. [+health] What was wrong with having her breakfast now, in the middle of the duel? After all, she had run out of time before, and it wasn't like she was doing anything.

They only had one round left, so she didn't see the point of doing much else. She didn't need to be prepared - she just needed to sit around and wait. So why not breakfast?

"You two are doing great!" she called out from where she was, watching, and waiting.
