Summer Workshop Prompt #2
Friends Are The Family We Choose

A support network of friends and family can often be the most valuable thing in your life, particularly if you're struggling with problems, whether they're personal, work-related, love-related... Not all of our characters are blessed with happy families, but a lot of them are lucky enough to have friends to turn to instead. That brings us to this prompt, which celebrates the strength of true friendship.

Your Task
Choose One

Option A
Write a piece from your character's perspective about a well-loved friend or family member of theirs. Think about the things that your character loves about them and the things they don't like so much, think about the positive qualities and the negative traits. Ultimately, why does your character value them as much as they do? Feel free to write in the first person (I love them, because...), third person (he/she loved them because...), or even the second person (you love them, because...) -- whatever you feel most comfortable with! It can also be in whichever form you feel fits best: prose, poetry, maybe even a script?

Option B
Write a piece from a well-loved friend or family member's perspective about your character. This is essentially the reverse of Option A! Think about the same sorts of things when writing -- what do you think that person most values about your own character? Do they overlook some flaws in favour of bigger, more positive, qualities? Again, feel free to write in whichever style works best for you. If you'd like to try writing this piece as a character who is played by another member, you must first ask them for permission to try your hand at writing their character.

How do I start?
three simple steps

1. Start a new thread in the Summer Workshop forum. It should be called Prompt 2A/2B: Title of Your Piece
2. Write your piece, following the prompt above.
3. Review the pieces of others (see How To Workshop).
we take the pressure and we throw away
conventionality belongs to yesterday
there is a chance that we can make it so far
we start believing now that we can be who we are
