Round 5

A1. Marlena attempts to cast Petrificus Totalus at Lamia. It works...but the girl is just too fast, too furious, and it misses.

A2. Lamia aims carefully at Marlena. Success!

Ref note: After talking to Aubs, I'm granting the +2 abil for next round instead of the instant request.

A3. Lamia attempts to cast Commutati acutus robes at Marlena. It hits the other girl, but it seems that she is stronger than meets the eye? 0% damage.

A4. Tiberius tries to summon the shoe....it doesn't even move a shoelace.

Round 6 of 7:

Lamia Cadwallader, +2 ability - 50%

vs

Marlena Flair, -2 resistance - 50%

vs

Tiberius Paladin - 50%

Marlena almost did a cartwheel when her spell shot off successfully. Her joy was cut short when Lamia, with cat-like reactions and curiosity, avoided the oncoming spell. The next thing she knew, Lamia was standing there, breathing solemnly, with her wand aimed for Marlena. There was something almost eerie about it. On top of that, she was muttering something in a sinister tone.

That something was a transfiguration spell. Marlena felt her robes growing prickly. It didn’t hurt, though. It was just irritating. “Great,” she uttered dejectedly. “Thanks for irritating me further.” She was too upset with the Cadwallader girl to notice Tiberius trying to summon her very own shoe.

She was really hoping her Petrificus Totalus spell was going to stick. Things would have been much better if she was frozen like a statue. Not only was she not frozen, she was acting creepy. Marlena tried to emulate the girl by breathing slowly, hoping to clear her head of the nonsense going on around her so she could see the true prize, victory. [+health, act twice]

How much time did they have left? It felt like they were getting nowhere fast. She couldn’t imagine Jackson was having fun watching these toddlers struggle with shoes and twigs. They weren’t very entertaining. She wondered what the older years were going to do in their duels. Maybe she’d learn a thing or two from watching them.

When could this be over and done with? Was there anything any of them could even learn from this? Perhaps after the duel the three of them could march their way up to the counselors and throw shoes at them instead. This entire thing was a waste of their time, and it wasn’t their fault they were incompetent. It was obviously the system. The man. What were they expected to do, just learn the spells themselves? They hadn’t even set foot inside Hogwarts.

Tiberius made a mental note to bother the professors and older students about dueling as soon as he got there. It was ridiculous he hadn’t been offered some type of tutelage, given his name and all. No one had told him that he had to practice to get better, and his expectation for instant results left him bitter.

Both of the girls seemed to be in some form of meditation, which was good for them, he figured, but this was a fight. To wage war, you had to stay on the offensive. That’s how people conquered. He needed flames or something.

Rather lazily, he shook out his wand and aimed it at the mushroom under Marlena’s bare foot, and half-heartedly attempted to cast another spell, “incendio”. At least if it worked it might be funny, but he really doubted it would.

Dodging the other girl's slow, cumbersome spell was easy. She had always been graceful, and it was to her advantage that she had been taking dancing lessons with her cousin for ages now. It had made her limber and agile, and if nothing else, it would be an asset for as long as she chose to be a duelist.

When he own spell finally worked, Lamia was overjoyed, but expressed no more than the vaguest smirk on her face as she drew herself up taller, failing at hiding how smug she was. Unfortunately, Marlena didn't appear much bothered by it, but who cared? She had successfully cast her first real spell! All her prior practice had been theoretical since she hadn't been allowed to practice properly at home. Not to mention, it wasn't as though she had had a wand to work with anyway.

Newly confident, Lamia decided to try her luck again. Perhaps this was the one spell she would become very good at. So far, it seemed to be like the only one that worked so it was worth trying again. Attempting it with a new vigor, Lamia confidently re-enunciated the spell. "Commutati acutus robes!"

Even if it didn't work this time, it was enough for her to know that it had worked once.

That was all Marlena needed. Just to shake a few cobwebs out of her head. All the chaos going on around her fell away. She saw her true target, Lamia. Tiberius was just a nuisance. He was a distraction Lamia had hired to aid her own cause. Marlena could see it all so clearly, she thought.

Turning to Tiberius, she held out her arms. “Go ahead,” she said mockingly. “Throw a shoe at me.” If she didn’t watch herself, she was going to get injured.  She laughed like only a villain would. “Tiberius, just stop. You’re embarrassing yourself.”

Feeling like she needed a boost, she scanned her short list of charms spells she had tried to prepare for the duel. Coming up with an obscure one, Marlena attempted to cast “Ferula!” loudly. She didn’t know exactly what would happen, but she hoped the stick would provide her with health and good will.

Knowing Lamia was the force to be reckoned with, Marlena stared her down. With her wand aiming at Lamia, she uttered, “Illusione di aria!” The girl wouldn’t expect the illusion of wind and air to come at her. Marlena chuckled, imagining the girl trying to set herself free from the imaginary wind. This was going to be rich.

I'm normal.
It's you that has the growth disorder.

Again, her spell went off wonderfully, and Lamia could have clicked her heals in glee. Only propriety kept her from doing so. It was impolite to gloat. What was more, the duel wasn't over yet. Gloating is for winners, and she had the uncomfortable feeling that Marlena was doing better than both her and Tiberius.

Turning her head, she looked over at her only real friend. The two were of such like mind it was difficult to separate them from each other. He wasn't doing half so well as she was. Sure, he hadn't been hit with a shoe, but she didn't think he had successfully cast a single spell yet either. Well, at least Marlena hadn't been attacking him too much, so he was fairly unscathed.

No, the girl was more intelligent than Lamia had given her credit for initially. She wasn't bothering with Tiberius. It was smart really. Tiberius was... Well, he thought the right things but he lacked focus. That lack of focus was going to hold him back. He needed to set aside the comic books and focus on being a proper wizard. That was the only way he would advance.

The other girl was pointing her want at her again, and Lamia was resigned to the fact that she would be under a constant barrage. She would dodge, if she could, but it was becoming tedious. She wanted the duel to be over. She wanted to practice. She wanted to be definably better than her opponents.

Sighing, Lamia didn't bother to raise her wand to either of her dueling partners. Instead, she just took a few deep breaths in to get her adrenaline down [+health]. The last of the anger over the shoe would ebb away, and her blood would stop pumping in her ears if she was only about to get one more good, solid breath.
