9:54am

Her ribs were beginning to hurt.

It wasn't that funny, not really. But for some reason, looking up to find Edgar in a red and yellow apron with a lion on the front, and a chef's hat stating "kiss the cook" had set her off giggling. It was rather sweet at how excited he was to be baking. Clearly she had chosen the right assistant for the day.

She had left Edgar to measure ingredients out, so she could place the right amounts out for all the students.

With her own apron - plain and boring white - tied around her waist, she walked around the worktop that the attendees would use, and placed an apron, hair net, and cap on each stool.

The work surfaces were clean. The utensils were all neatly set out, and ready for each student. The over was on a low light, so that it would be perfectly warm by the time they needed to put their cupcakes in.

Everything was ready.

Walking over to where Edgar was standing, she smiled. "How are we doing, chef Marlow?"

Jessie was the first to arrive for the Baking day activity. She walked in and noticed only Naomi and Ed(whom she had talked with briefly at the lake party) she smiled and said her hellos to them and wondered where she was to work. Not that Jessie needed to learn how to bake since she did it quite frequently at home with her mother but maybe a drama free session of cooking was just what she needed.

Jessie always found that baking and making something out of a bunch of random ingredients was always good for the soul. She enjoyed getting her hands in there and creating things that made people happy, she enjoyed seeing her hard work pay off.

"where would you like me to go?" Jessie wondered.

So Charlotte hadn't been the best Girls' Counselor. She had spent the first two weeks of summer in les États-Unis with Papa and his fiancée instead of fulfilling her duties at the Hangout - whatever they were.

But summer wasn't over yet, and she intended to make up for her absence by active participation. Everyone loved Bake Days! She could even assist Naomi and Edgar if they needed it. She had baked before in Beauxbatons' cooking classes. Even if the results had been inedible, the experience would surely be useful.

Charlotte's apron was a lovely, pale blue with delicate white lacing; she had sewn the trimmings on herself. But it was nothing compared to Edgar's odd choice of hat. "Kiss the cook"? That was a joke, wasn't it? It was comforting to see Naomi in a plain white apron. She didn't know either of them well, but she knew they were both in charge of things for the summer, just like herself.

"Hi," she nodded at both of them, "Edgar, Naomi. I wasn't aware we needed chefs' hats?" Although, she would admit inwardly that Edgar looked adorable in his pinny and hat. And Naomi looked pretty. Naomi always looked pretty, except with an apron she looked motherly at the same time.

Then Charlotte noticed the other girl in the room - a Hufflepuff called Jessie, she recognised. "Jessie, right?" Charlotte said cheerfully. Because Counselors should be cheerful and welcoming and lots of happy things. "Let's sit together!" She pulled out the stool nearest to her and sat, before patting the stool next to her invitingly.

"I've done a little baking before. Not very good at it, of course," Charlotte smiled modestly. "But, you know. We can choose the colour of our cupcakes, right? Because I'd like pink, for strawberry flavour. Is that alright?"

Nearly half of the Summer vacation had slipped past and Elsbeth had, in her natural style, missed almost everything by entrenching herself in books and independent studies that just seemed to thrust themselves upon her like a barrage of angry waves. There was always something else that she wanted to know, an answer she needed to find, but a little bird had told her of a particularly interesting event planned for today and she would have been sore to miss it.

The slender blonde, just at the first awkward stages of her ascent to womanhood, came bounding into the kitchen dressed in an over-sized white dress shirt which she was treating like a smock, a skirt shorter than the hem of the shirt, and a blue ribbon that held her wild golden curls up away from her face with an elaborate bow. Slightly winded from her sprint across the campground she clung to the doorframe, rarely active enough for that sort of exertion, and gazed at the collected wizards and witches with her broad blue eyes, "I'm not late, am I?"

She had taught herself to bake this last year, an indulgence that confused most of her housemates since the same ends could be reached without having to actually handle the ingredients... provided one has a skill with charms and sufficient control over their magic. She lacked both of these, although bitterly sought to rectify each problem in turn, but for the time being she was still working by hand and making a great deal of mess for a batch or two of chocolate biscuits.

Josiah Shepherd

He should know how to bake.  He was muggleborn after all.  Josie wasn't sure about going into the baking class.  It was likely to be all girls, though he was quite accustomed to being around mostly females.  He was rather feminine himself.  Maybe it was the fact that they were utilizing muggle methods that hit home.  It reminded him of his mother whom he desperately wanted to see.  She baked all the time and though there were really only 4 kids in the house anymore, he guessed that she still baked like all 9 were there.  In her last letter, she'd let him know that 4 of his elder siblings had each had another child, putting his niece and nephew count up to twenty-two.

Even with these things weighing on his mind, he decided to just go to the baking class.  What harm could it really do?  He needed to get out of his head for awhile.  He was 16, single and feeling quite angsty and restless this summer.  Stepping into the room, he felt just a little lighter seeing Charlotte.  Char was sitting by another girl whom, he thought, was also in his house but he wasn't sure.

"Charrr."  He said happily, drawing out the last letter of her name.  Inviting himself to take the seat on the other side of Charlotte, he picked up his apron, hairnet and cap.  The apron was a light lavender color.  Without hesitation, he put it on and modeled for Charlotte.  "How do I look dahlin?  Sexy?"  Josie turned a full three-sixty and made little modeling poses every so often.  "Oh wait, I forgot the creme de la creme.  The hairnet!"  He said, excitedly pulling it on over his long dirty blonde locks.

"This."  He said, near giggles, "completes the ensemble."  Josie proclaimed, near to bursting.  He felt lighter and happier than he had in a few days.  Why had he ever thought of not coming?  What a ridiculous thought.  Maybe he'd become a baker because he was relaxed already and they hadn't even begun yet.

Ed had been expecting them to laugh. Of course he had; when he'd put the gold-trimmed, scarlet apron on in his room, the Gryffindor lion splashed proudly across the front, he'd laughed at his own reflection. It had been with a great deal of tongue-in-cheek humour that he'd decided on his outfit for today, most of it having been transfigured into place by himself. However, there was no denying that humorous or not, scarlet and gold suited Ed well. And when he'd added the matching hat, the words 'Kiss The Cook' emblazoned across it in gold thread, his amusement had been tinged with a touch of pride.

Ed could pull anything off.

The hat set at a jaunty angle on top of his dark hair, he'd set off down to the Main Hall, ignoring the funny looks that some - okay, most - people that passed gave him. He had considered, of course, simply putting them on when he reached the kitchens, but on reflection he'd thought that it might remind passers-by that today was baking day if they saw one of the staff strolling through the campus in full cooking gear. Besides, Ed was comfortable in his own skin - and his own apron.

He'd laughed along with Naomi, then turned to begin carefully and precisely weighing out ingredients. He'd finished with flour and moved onto sugar by the time others started turning up. "Hi Jessie!" he said cheerfully, setting down the last bowl of sugar and starting on the baking powder. "Anywhere's fine," he gestured at the open room. "Charlotte!" he said cheerily, waving at the counsellor as she entered the room. "They're not necessary, I just like to wear mine." He winked at the Hufflepuff, greeting Elsbeth and then Joseph as they'd entered the room.

"I think that's everything," Ed said, trying to keep the eagerness from his voice and turning back to Naomi as he set down the last bowl. "Are you ready, Chef Lombardi?"

Ed loved baking.

Naomi looked up as someone stepped through the door. A smile appeared on her face at the sight of Jessie. "You can sit wherever you like, ma douce." She wasn't surprised to see the young girl had attended, she seem to enjoy activities, which was nice. It meant that Naomi was it least doing something right.

"Hello Charlotte." She chuckled at Edgar's response. "The chefs hats are just for fun, but there are hair nets and caps in each of the places should you wish to use them."

She hoped that everyone would at least put a hair net or a cap on. Getting hairs in your ingredients wasn't nice, and it was even worse if you ended up baking your ingredients and then biting in to the end result and finding an extra surprise. Naomi shuddered at the thought.

"Not at all, Elsbeth. You're right on time." Naomi smiled at her fellow Ravenclaw, well, previous fellow Ravenclaw. It had been Elsbeth who kept her awake long enough to witness their team win the first quidditch game of the year. Well, her old team... Oh it was sad to know longer be a Raven.

Naomi giggled at the reactions that some of the campers were having. Particular Josie who was enjoying his apron and hairnet. She didn't mind what sort of silly moods they were in, she was just happy that people had taken an interest in baking.

She smiled at Edgar. "I am indeed. Would you so kindly give out the ingredients to our students while I begin?"

As always Naomi had set up more than she needed, but still, it was always better to have too much rather than too little. Walking over to the counter, she moved the apron and hat to the stool next to her, and decided she would stand with the students and bake herself.

"Good morning everyone, and thank you so much for joining me and Edgar," she began with a wide smile. "Now, it doesn't matter if you have never baked before, because you're going to learn today. But most importantly, the goal today is just to have fun, which I hope you all will."

Naomi picked up the stack of bowls from the middle of the surface, and handed them out. "Edgar is kindly giving out all the ingredients. You will be using utensils, so there will be no need to touch your ingredients, but it would be best if you all washed your hands any way."

She didn't wish to seem patronizing, but hygiene was, after all, very important when it came to baking.

"Once you have all your ingredients could you tip them in to your bowls." Naomi placed her butter, caster sugar and self raising flour in to the white bowl before her. "Make sure to crack your two eggs gently so they don't go everywhere."

Picking one egg up at a time, she gently tapped it on the side of her bowl. Pushing her index fingers against the fracture in the shell, she watched as the egg slipped out and in to the bowl.

She wiped her hands on the bottom of the apron, and waited patiently for everyone to complete the first task.

Paras loved cooking.  Mostly as even with his time at Hogwarts so much of his life revolved around cooking.  So he figured another round at cooking in the wizarding world would provide him some amusement.  After all, he spent most of his time in muggle studies looking around in amusement at his classmates.  This hopefully would be equally amusing he thought as he wandered towards the main hall.

As he walked into the room he saw there were already some people there.  Hopefully they wouldn't take the good ingredients.  Or at least have more than anyone could use like Professor Renard had.  With his first chuckle of what he hoped would be many he picked up his apron and put it on along with the hairnet and the hat.

Even better as he looked around from his position in the back of the room there were mostly girls in the room.  Chuckling again he saw Josiah's posing and said " You look adorable. " replying to the comment he overheard and obviously was not directed towards him.  Not that he cared.

He trudged to wash his hands noting that ingredients were handed out.  He much preferred when his recipes were not rationed.  Then he wandered back to his station in the back and started following the directions.

Jessie grabbed the stool next to Charlotte and nodded her head gratefully as she thanked her for welcoming her into the room. Jessie giggled as Ed said " hi" to her. She had to admit he looked rather handsome in his apron and chef hat.

Then came in some students Jessie didn't know but the one modeling his apron made her smile. He seemed like fun and Jessie made a mental note to herself to introduce herself to him after class.

Jessie put on her apron and put the hair net over her tight bun that she had woven her wavy, long, blonde hair into at the back of her head. Then sat upon her stool like an owl on a perch ready for flight and awaited the next directions. She was just looking around the room when she noticed that blonde haired boy she had seen around the Hangout this summer. She had seen him around and had asked others to find out his name was Paras. She smiled at him where he stood at the back of the room. Her smile was so bright it lit up her face . Her intensely green eyes met his as she blushed and went back to listening to Naomi explain what they were to do. Jessie got up to wash her hands taking this opportunity to move closer to Paras. She desperately wanted to introduce herself to him and had to find the opportunity to but everyone else was pouring ingredients into big mixing bowls so she hurried back to her place next to Charlotte. It would have to wait until later but Jessie was determined to meet him.

Once back in her spot Jessie followed Naomi's directions. Jessie loved to bake and cook she found the measuring and mixing of things to make something completely different helped her sort out things in her life as well.

Sevina was sitting quietly towards the back. Her long red hair fell in her face as she looked down at the hair net and cap. Being a pureblood she had never seen either. Taking a look around she observed the others to see what the items had to do with cooking.  The other students were putting them on their heads. She shrugged her shoulders and pulled the hair net onto her head. She felt ridiculous. She never needed a hair net when she made potions at home.

After receiving her ingredients, she tipped them into her empty bowl. Her eyes widened in alarm as she watched the instructor break the eggs and dump it into the bowl. Sevina never had to do that with snake eggs in her potions. It was a bit disgusting. She grimaced and stuck out her tongue as she broke the egg the contents slipped out of the shell into the bowl.

"That is disgusting," she muttered under her breath.

"Charrr."

Charlotte looked up from her examination of Edgar's chef's hat. "Charlotte, if you please," she corrected automatically before even seeing who it was. Nicknames were her pet peeve, as Izzy, Maurus, and anyone who thought it would be funny to cut her name short discovered.

"Josie! Hi!" It was always exciting to see Josiah Shepherd, because he said the most interesting things. And he wasn't intimidating like some older boys. Josie took the seat on her other side and immediately put his hairnet and apron on.

He posed for her assessment. "Sexy?" Charlotte almost blushed at the use of the word, but that wouldn't be the behaviour of a worldly and grown up fourteen-year-old. Instead she nodded. "As always." She giggled as Josie modelled his outfit with his usual flamboyant gestures.

"The chefs hats are just for fun, but there are hair nets and caps in each of the places should you wish to use them," Naomi explained. Charlotte obligingly put her hair net on, tucking any unruly strands away neatly. Imagine getting one's hair into the dough, or whatever it is they were using - how horrid.

Already Naomi was beginning to give instructions; Charlotte nodded knowingly as she spoke. Of course she knew exactly what Naomi was talking about. She washed her hands, as Naomi had recommended, although she was sure her hands were completely clean. Just a safety measure, Charlotte assumed, for other students.

And of course she knew how to crack eggs. That was basic stuff! She was just... making sure, Charlotte thought, as she watched Naomi demonstrate proper egg-cracking procedure. She tapped her egg on the side of the bowl gingerly, following Naomi's example.

"It's not cracking," Charlotte complained, wondering if Josie was having any more success. Jessie, on her other side, seemed to be doing fine. She tapped it harder. Again. Finally she whacked it hard, on the edge of the table.

Egg insides - whatever they were - spilled out onto her apron. "Oh, dear," Charlotte looked at the empty shells in her hand mournfully. "Well, that's what aprons are for."

She grabbed another egg, this time taking care to hold it over the bowl after she cracked it. Bits of shell dribbled down into the bowl, and Charlotte had no idea how to remove them. Perhaps she would leave them as they were - then she could have a crunchy cupcake!

Her hands were covered in egg gloop, and she wiped them on her apron as she had seen Naomi done before settling down on her seat once more. Hopefully no one noticed the mess on the front of her apron. And it was favourite (and only) one, too...

Alexander liked cooking since it allowed him to be flexible when it came to preparing dishes. It let him to express his creative side whenever he got a chance to do it, but cooking recipes were usually only mere suggestions on what to do with the ingredients and left everything else up to the cook. He never got to do it much outside of school, but he had grown up watching the House Elves of the Valentine family and picked up a few skills from them.

Baking, on the other hand, was what Alexander loved. Even if he didn't like eating the end product, the boy loved it because it was all about chemistry. The ingredients, methods, and their reactions all thrown together in a formula to reach the end product. Today's end product was cupcakes. If anything, he'd leave them for others to eat, since he didn't see himself taking them back to his cabin.

As he waited for the ingredients to get handed out, Alexander observed the other people in the main hall and found himself not really knowing anyone else. Which wasn't really unusual since he normally kept to himself and wasn't big on mingling. He found himself next to a pair of students that seemed to be friends, the boy striking a pose and asking the girl if he looked sexy.

Alexander fought back a scoff at that and let his eyes wander back to the girl that seemed to be in charge of today's event. He took a quick mental note of what she had done and repeated what she did, minus the getting egg yokes on his hand. He had cracked the eggs efficiently with a practiced movement into the bowl and waited for the next set of instructions.

However, Alexander had become distracted when the girl behind and to the side of him seemed to be having trouble. He saw her mess up the first egg and bit back a laugh when she smoothly wiped the yoke off on her apron like nothing had just happened. "Well, that's what aprons are for," he had heard her say. His lips turned up into grin that was hard to hide, but he looked back at the girl in front before he was caught having witnessed the event. Absently fixing his chef hat, Alexander hoped he hadn't missed anything important.

Jessie noticed Charlotte having trouble with the eggs. She had really made a mess out of herself. Jessie smiled and offered to help her with the eggs, since Jessie herself was used to cracking eggs.

Jessie shrugged her shoulders and held her hands palms up as if to say to Charlotte,"it happens to the best of us sometimes!". Jessie looked at the front of her apron to see that it was still clean so she smiled and asked Charlotte," would you feel better if I smeared something all over my apron too?". With that Jessie giggled and even to her ears it was nice to hear her laugh since she had spent so much time feeling down lately.Jessie wasn't sure what was happening to her lately she was normally very happy, social and easy going. "Boy things change when you grow up!" Jessie thought to herself.

Naomi glanced around the room, watching everyone with hidden amusement. Getting messy was half the fun of baking. As long as no one dropped ingredients on the floor and then popped it in the bowl... they were okay.

"How is everyone?" She asked, with a smile. "Ready to move on?"

She indicated to the small tray of bottles, and tubs in the center of the work top. "You will see a variety of bottles and tubs in the middle of the table. Now, if you would like your cupcakes to be a particular flavour, or colour, you can do that."

Naomi reached forward and picked up the coco powder. "If you would like to make chocolate cup cakes, you will need to add two table spoons of coco to your mix." She got a spoon for herself, and added coco powder to her ingredients.

"If you want to have pink cupcakes, or green, or whichever colour you would like you will need to add two cap fulls of the correct colouring to your mixture." She put the tub of coco powder down. "Also, if you would like a particular flavour, there are also flavourings on the tray. Just add one cap full, unless you want the colour to be really bold; Then add two."

It would have been better if she had vanilla pods, and fresh strawberries etc. But unfortunately it would require more time, and make more mess, and she had promised the staff that she would have the class out of there so that they could get dinner ready for the day. So, she had to go the quick route with making cupcakes, which was the only reason she had gotten Edgar to measure out the ingredients. It had cut a little of the fun out, but they didn't have time to stop and start the session if ingredient measurements were wrong.

"Once you have added your colouring and flavour, grab a whisk and beat all your ingredients until it is a nice thick texture." Naomi grabbed a whisk from the middle of the table, and began to stir the ingredients.

As he was washing his hands he noticed someone looking at him.  Jessie if he had overheard the name correctly in the past not that he was going to say anything.  Mostly as she was smiling so much either he was about to fall in a trap or he had done something right.  He was going to hope it was the latter and smiled back before going back to his things.

As a trap would certainly make this baking experiment rather sour.  Though it seemed the girl who spilled on herself was having the sour time not him.

He looked over towards the girl who had called the eggs disgusting.  He had quickly prepared his own ingredients not even pausing at the eggs or other mixtures as he was so used to cooking.  Looking over he said " You've not done many potions have you.  I'll take slimy eggs over slimy worms. "

Flavored bottles to make the cupcakes flavors not actual ingredients.  He tried hard not to scoff at the idea, but a small sound came out of his mouth.  Though he was able to wander up with his bowl of mix and tossed in a rather simple flavor and a color before returning to his place.

At least he was on the easy whisking step at his place when he looked over towards the little girl who had called the eggs disgusting and said " I'm Paras.  Wait till you get to Hogwarts these ingredients will be nothing. "

As Jessie mixed her ingredients she kept her eyes on Paras and when he went up to get the flavoring and colouring she did as well. She was going to make her cupcakes vanilla and pear flavored. She wanted them to be original.

As she waited behind Paras she introduced herself to him.
"Hi I'm Jessie, what flavor and color are you going to make your cupcakes?" she wondered as her face blushd alightly. She hoped he hadn't noticed.

When it was her turn she asked Naomi if she had vanilla and pear flavors. After adding the flavors Jessie decided to pass on the coloring because the only color she associated with pear was green, which was her favorite color but something about green food tends to scare people off. She thanked Noami and returned to her spot next to Charolette.

She wisked her batter completely and stuck her finger in and liccked it off. Yes it tasted like it should. She smiled and asked Charlotte what flavor she was choosing.

Sevina looked up at the owner of the masculine voice.

"You've not done many potions have you.  I'll take slimy eggs over slimy worms."

"Oh, I've made potions before, some simple ones. But the eggs usually are from snakes and go in whole into the concoction," Sevina responded. She had also dealt with worms and they are not that bad to deal with, she thought to herself.

After mixing her batter she thought for a moment of what flavor she would use in her cupcakes. She decided to go with cherry and almond. Her favorite flavors. Now color would be difficult seeing that most cherry flavored items were tinted pink and Sevina hated pink. She decided just to leave them white or whatever the natural batter color would be when baked. After she added her flavoring, the same voice commented again.

"I'm Paras.  Wait till you get to Hogwarts these ingredients will be nothing. "

"Hello, Paras. I'm Sevina," she responded with a slight smile. "I'm sure I've seen many of the ingredients at Hogwarts. I'm pureblood," she replied as she whisked together her batter. She was sure he was not a pureblood and if he was then he was a muggle sympathizer.

Naomi's wrist was beginning to hurt.

The ridiculous thing was that she could always cheat when it came to baking - and most practical subjects - she should probably use magic. Everything would be done quicker. There would be no mess, and no aching joints . . . But what was the point in baking if she was getting her wand to do everything for her?

The process was the fun part.

Naomi lifted her whisk, and watched as the batch took it's time to drop in a thick blob back in the bowl. Seeing that the mixture was the right texture, she placed the bowl back on the worksurface.

"How are we all doing?" she asked, looking around the group.

She headed to the oven and checked the temperature, before retrieving the the stack of metal cake trays from the side. She walked back to the group and proceeded to hand on the twelve dish tray all filled with paper cases.

"Once your mix is nice and thick, you can start scooping it out in to the cake cases," she explained, stopping in her spot. Grabbing a spoon from the center, she carefully began scooping even amounts of cake batter in to the flimsy cases.

He had forgotten something.  Or a quick taste of his batter made him think that his flavoring was slightly off.  Thankfully he was not done his whipping so with a quick nod to the girl he had just started taking to he dashed to the front to add some vanilla flavoring.

Perhaps his dash had been a mistake as Jessie had caught up with him with an odd blush.  He was certainly not used to girls blushing randomly.  Paras said " I'm Paras. Added a bit of vanilla to the blueberry flavor as it was a bit to strong.  You? "  Not that he stayed around long figuring they were seated close enough she could turn around from her station and talk loudly behind her.

Back at his station he saw the girl respond to him.  His mind tried to think of potions that involved snake eggs and came up with a couple quickly.  Most were off the standard curriculum but he could think of a few basic ones that would be basic for most kids.  Paras chuckled and said " I thought that too. "  Which was true for the most case, but there were a few that had caught him by surprise.  Paras said " Some of the lower quality ingredients took me for a shock. "

Of course he inwardly cringed after he said that as such comments were not typical of him.  In fact he had come from rather poor beginnings even if all everyone would hear was how he came from the rather rich Pendragon family.  Paras said " Though I could just be blaming them for my own mistakes when I made a potion blow up in my second year. "

He could feel from his whipping that his batter was ready to go into cupcake trays.  With the tray he handed he placed his batter in the tray carefully and waited for the next step.
