"No! That's not all!" Austin was quick to respond this time, recovering from his shock over Avery's nonchalance. "Sorry but this is serious, Avery, you cannot simply fail Charms and carry on." Avery stared at him in a way that made Austin only more off-put.
Where were the tears? the apologies? the empty promises to try harder so that Austin could at least say that he tried and he really did try and he gave warnings and offered help but was refused?! How would he ever face Anneka with the knowledge one of his students failed his class and didn't even care! What if he lost his job because he didn't do everything in his power to ensure Avery Elliot passed the bare minimum?!
Straightening himself, Austin stood up, beginning to pace in front of the fire. "You have to pass Charms, it is part of the core curriculum. It's just -- just how it goes! If you fail, you might be held back an entire year! For one class! And, really, I don't think the material is too far advanced for your age. At least, I plan it according to past lesson levels, and my own experience of where you should be. I think it all aligns, really, but um, you are really far behind. You need a tutor!" he finally spluttered out, "Something weekly, maybe even more." Avery openly balked at this, but Austin pointedly ignored it. Austin stopped in his tracks, whirling towards the boy with a grin. "That's it! I'll be your tutor!"
"Is that necessary?"
"Tomorrow! Right after dinner! ... Does that work for you?"
" ... yes, sir."
