Last Night of Camp

He'd found it in the mountains searching for monsters with Sol.

It'd ended up in a group of third years that were now not speaking to one another.

He'd tried burning it, freezing it, sawing it in half.

At this point, Lupin had grown increasingly frustrated at the lengths he was currently going to make sure no one else would interact with this cursed deck of cards.

There was a box where things could never leave. It's lock was made by goblins who needed to keep things secret. He'd taken it from his father, though Joshua would soon come asking why. Yet, it wasn't enough. Lupin fastened metal chains to bound it. Then, he'd placed it in an iron safe too heavy to lift. It took him all night to dig the hole he buried it in by the shore of the Black Lagoon. The seventeen-year-old had no idea what happened to these grounds during the time they were away but he figured that this would stay that way.

The last bit was filling the whole back up and needing to take a shower to wash away the taste that'd lingered on his lips all summer.

Later In The Summer
Early Morning

Boredom had already set in.

It was a mostly empty infirmary that morning. Light had started to break through the window. They were dull, groggy rays as the sun had only just risen from its slumber. They weren't strong enough to illuminate the room to turn off the lumps, yet Lupin walked over to do so anyway.

The pair of bodies that filled two of the beds were still asleep. They had remained that way for most of the night, recovering from their fever that had been treated with potions that had left them light-headed. It wasn't the epidemic he'd hoped for, some break in the doldrums of the night, to where he had mercifully saved the other nightly attendant from having to suffer through.

He sank back into an empty cot once the room grew darker after dispersing the artificial light. Lupin turned on his stomach, head peering out of the bed, to watch a small line of ants trailed from the wall in single file. Then he counted them, like sheep, until he started feeling his eyelids grow heavy.

First Day of Camp

"Hey! I've been looking for you!"

Lupin sauntered jovially behind the shaggy head of hair he could pick out in any crowd. When it was the only one to see in an empty room, the vast majority of the camp congregating for the first lunch of the camp where everyone made it a point to socialize and meet each other, Lupin was already springing off his feet and bouncing onto the presumed bed of Neddy Palmer before he could flash a bright smile to melt into his.

"Getting settled in?" He asked, tilting his head to watch the Hufflepuff stop unpacking his luggage as his own hand reached into his pocket to take out a rather spooky looking deck box.

Late Morning

"How big do you think this island is?" It'd been a weird ride on the fishing boat over as the counselors made their headway into exploring all the corners of Camp Loki's new theme. When they'd been told which spot was best for sun-bathing, it became obvious where they'd want to go together first.

Staring back at Mari, he flashed a bright smile and said, "Or does it even matter?"

Lupin had a scarlet towel hanging off his shoulder, pale green swimming trucks with a blue cross over the left thigh, and a tight, pale tank top with navy borders on the collar and shoulders and the New York Yankees logo on the chest.

Third Week of Camp
After Breakfast

"Is this yours?" He asked the only other person lounging at the center of the library.

The poster had read as much. The meeting place underlined. The time underlined twice. It read like a mash-up between a bounty hunt, a wanted ad, and a scam masking as a contest to win a fully paid vacation.

Lupin breathed slightly easier at being the only one who had seemingly arrived. He had taken it down, feeling like it would have only lead several of his younger, more gullible campers astray. At least, that's what he told himself and he knew he was lying.

The Team Vampire counselor was more intrigued than anything else. Being that he'd had a chance to arrive at the horror show of a camp theme earlier than the rest, he'd immediately been unnerved by the mysterious footprints and the creeping sensation that perpetually lingered at every area of the camp at all times seemingly just out of reach. Selfishly, if there was someone who was willing to get to the bottom of this then he would have to volunteer himself... and only himself.

That was why, while his voice tried to remain stern and steady, the glint of his chocolate eyes and the wide grin of his lips told a very different, opposing tale.

Second Week of Camp
On a Hot Afternoon

Lupin wiped the sweat off his brow before getting back in his batter's stance. The long, wooden bat was easily balanced in his hand, spinning at the rotation of his wrist. His other hand, once done keeping the sweat from trailing towards his eyes, slipped his wand back into his pocket. Summoning wasn't his strongest area of magic, but using Accio to summon all the baseballs he'd sent flying did make this a lot easier.

He'd been out for about an hour now, whacking balls far and deep on the red-weeded ground that most used for Quidditch. There were a few campers playing further away on the makeshift pitch that had been erected that first week before any of the other campers had arrived. Lupin made sure that his bats sent the hard balls in the opposite direction, though he still worried that one of his wayward shots would end up smacking an unsuspecting kid in the head and then he'd have to go into full-counselor mode to fix the situation.

With his basket full once more, he reached down and held a stiff baseball against his palm, gripping it tightly with his fingers. He tossed it high in the air, enough so that he could grip the handle of the bat back with both hands and watch its descent to aim his swing. Like clockwork, his arms swung together and slammed into the baseball with enough force to send it flying to where it was barely visible in the air.

Before he had a chance to see where it dropped, Lupin was already reaching for a new ball; his grip tighter, his arms tenser, his adrenaline starting to pump.

An outcast at birth, Lupin's slowly learning to find his voice in the magical world he always belonged to. His upbringing gave him a soft spot for the ostracized, the so-called weirdos. It's a hard internal dynamic he has had to deal with when his appearance, strong and tall with a contagious smile, differs from the naive sincerity of his spirit. He can be competitive if provoked, unyielding if impassioned (rare as those moments are). He prefers staying busy, which keeps him from being reflective of how far his life had come since his family died and had to go searching for a father he'd never met. He struggles with magic (but getting better at it), only having a couple of years of practicing. Prefers playing Quidditch and doing rounds in the Hospital Wing and stays physical active. Starting to figure out the people he wants around him and is more willing to put himself out there.

Late May

Detentions with Mr. Levine had gotten predictable.

Lupin would sit close to the back of the nearly empty room, listening to the usual berating monologue that had grown old halfway through hearing it the first time. By now, with how often the seventeen year-old found himself in detention lately, he was merely perking his ears up for the usual notes: how they were throwing their lives away, how they would need to get their futures in order or risk a future of flipping burgers (a warning that didn't hit the mark now that it had been established with the jump in minimum wage that teaching at this dump paid only slightly more), and a dated reference that hadn't been relevant when the man pushing sixty had been their age, let alone now.

Within thirty minutes of the hour they were forced to sit idly and reflect on what had landed them here, Mr. Levine would turn his seat around in the desk so he could pretend like he wasn't falling asleep. The moment he heard the muffled snores, Lupin was free to pull his phone out so he could attach his earphones and use his backpack as a pillow.

He had a timer set on his phone to make sure he'd wake up before the teacher would. Lupin didn't want to think about how he'd be late to spring practice (again) and have to explain to coach why the starting quarterback wasn't running drills with everyone else. That monologue was the one he truly feared, or would if there was a snowball's chance in hell they'd really slot Jeffreys, literally the dumbest person he'd ever met who --despite having a cannon for an arm-- couldn't make sense out of their generic-ass playbook, ahead of him again. All it mean was he'd be making up the missed time by running laps until he puked.

Nothing he wasn't used to.

Lupin dosed off about twelve minutes into listening to his secret jazz playlist. One of many and the main reason he kept his spotify handle obscure and secret as well. There wasn't anyone at this school who would appreciate anything not of this century. The moment he received foreign stares at playing pre-Stankonia OutKastwas when he lost hope for this tragic hole in the outskirts of Dallas.

His arms stretched out as he slept, causing his phone to fall off the edge of his desk and bounce onto the floor. Thank God for Otter Boxes. Lupin didn't even notice, falling deeper into the music of Charlie Parker.

Goodbye
+
Goodnight!

Hello all, I'm Juan or JJ or just Ads to make things easier as that's my discord name. My original run on the site ended a long while ago, back when The Scene was popping and my writing was atrocious. Generally I do not count that time as canon since it feels too long gone and Ebilboard/Yuku is dead now.

Sooooo I really started on the site in late 2015 with my lovely angst-baby Adrian and am very proud that I've made it this far despite the spotty spells where my muse abandons me and life turns fragile and tragic. My actual life outside of this place seems inconsequential to this! Who wants to know about my meandering social life in the luxurious Greater Miami Area? I know what you're really here for. All the sparkly stuff.

cool sparkly things about me:
  • Into MANY, MANY, THINGS. They break down as follows.
  • Books: Generally an avid reader but the three series I read and reread and go crazy over are A Song of Ice and Fire, The Kingkiller Chronicles, and The Legend of Drizzt. Extremely dedicated to these fandoms. I will argue over every tiny detail until it kills me.
  • Music: If you know me even tangentially then you've prob heard me talk about things I enjoy listening to. It's easier to just follow me on spotify and see the stupidly-wide range of playlists I make. I love going to see live music and I'm pretty proud of my concert history. I will argue with you that 2005 was the best year in music in my very biased, relatively-inspired opinion.
  • Seriously though, spotify playlists are life. I have many dedicated to my charries and ships and things.
  • I'm an avid anime fan. Very inspired by Akira, Gureen Lagaan, Evangelion, My Hero Academia, Naruto, Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, BBB, Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad, Berserk, Princess Mononoke, Ranma 1/2, Tenchi Muyo, One Punch Man and a bunch of others
  • I divide tv into dramas, sitcoms, and cartoon comedies. Here are some of my faves: You're The Worst, It's Always Sunny, Community, Rick and Morty, Archer, South Park, Narcos, Stranger Things, The Last Kingdom, The Expanse, Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Succession, The Good Place, That 70's Show, Barry, Scrubs, Buffy. Very thankful for Hulu.
  • Sports blogger. Also watch a lot of Japanese pro wrestling.
  • I have 7 (that's right) active characters! Adrian Alric: former Raven brood-boy. Currently trying to run away with Sylvia Renn Fortnum. Orion Alricsson: Slythie Jerk. Married to Felicity Wilding. Andy Wagner: Wild Child and Former COMC prof. She's a blast. Lupin Sol: All-Around normal guy trying to find his way. He's a good time. Sydney Lamont: Smol beans. Has a posse of house elves. Envy Lamont: Wicked in all facets. Ministry page. (The 7th should be up soon enough and I'll edit <3)

Since Lupin is my only castle character (as of posting this) and a summer counselor, here's more about him ---v

Lupin Sol
the details.
He's an American born wizard who was living secluded from magical society because they aren't too kind to squibs. It was pretty tough. He always felt out of place living with nomajs who disliked him subconsciously for being different. He left when his mother died, taking the name of a family friend who adopted him and acted as his role model before finding his biological father. Lupin would have rather tried to struggle on his own at the time but it was obvious he needed to be with the only family he had left. After a year of rocky coexistence learning magic under his wing, he ended up enrolling in Hogwarts.

It's been two years since then. Lupin's made some friends and tried to grow into himself after having to cope with having all the people he loved die. He can be rather sweet and affectionate, caring a lot about his friends especially Goose and Neddy who feel as close as family. Currently dealing with the normal confusion that comes from teenage hormones. Hopefully he'll figure it out. Also, the whole magic thing. At least he gets to use his wand this summer.

Third Week of Summer
Late Morning

Lupin hadn't begun to question the reason why, but he walked around the fountain area of Palais Longchamp anyway. Breakfast was further in the past than lunch was in the future and there were many people out and about on that sunny, summer day. With only a few puffy clouds floating above and a warm breeze cutting figures against the fountain's surface, it was a perfect day for getting in some Quidditch.

Summer was not nearing its halfway point and Lupin had already become one of the people most often seen at the Quidditch Pitch. It was a daily affair for the Gryffindor trying to find ways to fill his time. Another way proved to be spending it trying to organize a large enough gathering to get a full game going rather than the half-pitch scrimmages that were less enjoyable by degrees. This cabin, more than the others, had been where he'd been most lucky.

There wasn't a long window of time before the people wanting to play Quidditch would simply settle for what they had at that time, so choosing a single place to look before heading back to the pitch was the only feasible way to do it.

He noticed a boy, probably of an age to the sixteen year-old himself, sitting on the chiseled edge of the fountain. There was a disinterested aura there, one that could be sensed by the unyielding steel in his eyes that strayed away from those that walked past. Lupin, with a broom in each of his hands, smiled at the opportunity to extend the invitation.

"Hey there!" He approached without waiting for the recognition, leaving only a few steps between them as he held out the broom in his left hand.

"Would you want to play Quidditch with us?" He used that pronoun even if he was the only one there. "We could use another body rather desperately."

Following This
Along the Path to the Cézanne Cabins

He'd picked a handful before leaving behind the cove with Becca once the last light fell over the horizon. Under the cascading moonlight and the gleam of twinkling stars, any flower along the way was plucked by Lupin and added to his makeshift bouquet with a delicate grace, easy as the breeze, like they had risen from the dirt for this sole purpose.

"You must be the oldest person attending Hogwarts next term then, right?"

They'd been talking, the younger Gryffindor driving the conversation through a meandering path.

"Does that feel strange at all?"

Early Summer
Dusk

Violet skies began to take over.

There was only a small orange glow, a small semi-circle pulled over the horizon like harp strings. The clash of colors made that fight over light and dark stand out to him. There were pink clouds and white stars coming to life. Red streaks crossing into the dark like canals. A warm breeze brushed against his cheeks like stroking fingers, finding the lines of his smile.

Lupin had received a letter from Goose earlier that day. One that was not completely unexpected considering who the sender was but one that still had a profound, heartfelt impact on him. It was the first time someone had sent him a letter like that. He'd never had friends close enough to do so when he lived with nomajs, no one that cared enough to wonder how he was doing as he moved from place to place to place during his childhood.

He'd flown out to this secluded area of camp to try and frame how he wanted to respond. It had only been a little more than a week at camp. He tried to recount all that had happened in that window of time, though most of it felt like he was trying his best to fleetingly fill it with things to do. His notepad was opened against his feet as he sat cross-legged on the grass, his knees pushing out evenly to let his forearms lay over his thighs.

His chin rested on the balled fist of his left hand where his thumb wrapped around his bound index finger, eyes surveying the gentle enveloping of evening. His broom was behind him and his bag, which he had brought with the materials he needed, were nearby. A dry quill was tucked over his ear so that the feather fluttered behind his head.

Lupin was deep in contemplation, so much so he didn't hear anyone approaching.

End of Summer

"Would you want to watch it?"

He tried to remain impassive as he asked. Summer had dwindled down to its final embers. After a seemingly endless couple of months, the finish line to the start of term was clearly in sight. Despite himself, after finally finding a rhythm to fill the time that had originally made him feel aimless, Lupin felt the anxiety of preparing to fit his uniform and stretch his time through an extensive curriculum.

There were plenty of things to be optimistic about, far more he reflected on to engulf anything that might leave him unnerved. It was why his smile came easy, no real danger in admitting the small nuggets of bad on his full plate of good. More than anything, it did clear up much of what had seemed obscure to him before sleep found him as the days counted down.

Like, the people who had made his first summer at camp memorable. The faces that stood over the sea of them in the dining halls, on the Quidditch pitch, at the parties and festivities.

"You know, with me?"

Lupin found the perfect balance between eagerness and lenity. If Nashira Nettlebed rejected the invitation, he would not have pressed it. Of course, he wouldn't be asking unless he wanted to share the experience with her. It was the last showing of the summer and, while he could have found a group to attend with or have just showed up alone to enjoy it, it felt important to ask her. Those endless days had seen a stony visage soften, like smoothed out rocks spent years under a waterfall.

He would have liked to think he'd earned the small smiles, despite then rooted more in resignation.

When it came to the Slytherin girl, Lupin took it as a win.

Older Boy's Cabin

"Hey Adam, where are you going?"

It had only been the pair of them in the room at that time. There were a few other boys who comprised the cabin space and Lupin had at least gotten through the introductory stage of making their acquaintance since the beginning of summer. That alone felt gratifying after the uneasiness of his dormitory experience at Hogwarts.

Adam, however, had taken up the last bunk. Since it was a located directly besides his own, he started noticing that he'd find the Ravenclaw (he'd been informed of that through a tertiary source) sleeping there only to wake up in the middle of the night and realize that it was empty. It was not often enough to seem alarming, but considering he wasn't much of a light sleeper it was a strange thing to take notice of.

He made sure not to inflect too much when he asked. Lupin did not want to seem nosy. It was spoken calmly and flowed easily, soaked in innocent curiosity and wrapped in a friendly smile.
