Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Eleanor Rae Valentine

Birthday: July 25, 1941

Hometown: Lakeside Walk, Hogsmeade

Bloodline:
Muggleborn / Halfblood / Pureblood / Unknown

Magical Strength (pick one):
Divination / Transfiguration / Charms / Conjuring & Summoning

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Divination / Transfiguration / Charms / Conjuring & Summoning

Year (pick two): Second, first

Biography:
Eleanor Rae Valentine’s life has been somewhat unremarkable. She lives with her two parents, Isabelle and Alexander Valentine, in Hogsmeade, where she’s always lived. She also has a younger brother, Max, whose favorite hobby is discovering new and exciting ways to get his sister into trouble. Ellie visits with her grandfather on the weekends. She has a Siamese cat named Kismet. Her mother was Ravenclaw Head of House for a while, although now she works doing independent research (or so that’s what she claims). Her father works for the Ministry in the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad. There’s not much to know.

Both parents were Ravenclaws, and so Ellie’s parents have Expectations, with a capital “E”. She thinks this is ridiculous, because last she checked, she was her own person with her own Expectations (with a capital “E”). Ellie’s mother says she gets that from her father.

Because of the Expectations, Ellie was homeschooled, rather than sent to a traditional magical primary school. Her tutors often grew frustrated with her, because she would frequently hide a novel or a how-to manual or some other reading material behind her schoolbooks. It wasn’t (isn’t) that Ellie didn’t (does) enjoy school; she did (does). But she wanted to learn what she wanted to learn, and when she wanted to learn it. She didn’t (and doesn’t) understand why that fact is so difficult for adults to comprehend.

Another thing that (most) adults didn’t (don’t) understand was that Ellie had (has) worlds inside her head. Anything she read wound up there, filed away into little islands that she could visit whenever she wanted. Practical information was filed away in drawers, ready for her to pluck it out if needed. Her brain was alive with color and sound, and she more often preferred to spend time there than in the “real” world, despite others’ attempts to pull her out.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: Ravenclaw (because lol it’s me)

Personality:
Eleanor is, generally, a good kid. She’s her father’s daughter in most respects - a little more serious than her mother, a little less intense than her dad. She’s a passable flyer, but it’s not her favorite pastime. Ellie’s favorite thing is reading, and she’s very likely to be found with her nose in a book, although frequently not the book she should be reading. Much like her father, socialization isn’t...well, it’s not that it’s not her strong point. Her social skills are fine. It’s just that she often prefers not to.

Appearance:
Ellie is slightly above the average height for her age. She has reddish brown hair, but her eyes (and expression) more resemble her father’s quiet intensity. She has a fair and slightly freckled complexion, and would probably burn easily in the sun if she were an outdoorsy type. Ellie is slender, more legs than anything and is starting to look like a gangly teenager.

Option 2:

That rat of his was in for it now.

The gray little rascal had disappeared from his clutches at breakfast. Again.

Before Hugh even knew what was happening, Merlin had shot across the floor, somehow managing to avoid all the feet walking across the hall and had escaped through the open doors.

Which meant that Hugh was now stomping through rows of flowers and other various flora, searching for the small creature. It was like the rat knew Hugh was allergic to most flowers. Merlin always chose to run to the gardens whenever he got away from Hugh. It was as if the rat did not want to have him for an owner.

Hugh had named his pet Merlin because he had hoped the powerful name would give the rat more incentive to be more than a rat. Not that he expected Merlin to change into a wizard or anything, but rats were just so...useless, for the most part. With a name like Merlin, Hugh thought it might give the rat purpose.

The only purpose Merlin seemed to have was getting away from Hugh as often as possible.

As the fifth year trudged into the second row of flowers, not taking much care to avoid trampling the first row, he felt the first sneeze building up pressure in his nose and behind his eyes.

"You blasted rat! Where are you?"

He pulled apart a section of bright red flowers; he didn't know what they were called because he despised flowers, and ducked his head low to peer into the depths of the flowerbed. It was moving closer in proximity to the flowers that finally did it. Hugh took in three great breaths and then let out an almighty sneeze. It was strong enough to disturb some of the dirt on the ground before him.

Groaning, he stood up again and wiped his nose on his sleeve. It was as he was turning his head, his nose running up and down his arm, that movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention. Normally one who preferred to put his best face forward, Hugh was a bit embarrassed to be caught wiping his runny nose on his robes.

Nevertheless, Hugh put on his best haughty voice, albeit a bit thickly with his plugged nose and said, "Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

“It’s not polite to go around yelling, either,” Eleanor interjected. “Nor is it polite to go around trampling flowers. They’ve got feelings, you know.” She knew this because she had read Alice in Wonderland, and all of the flowers in that book had feelings. There was absolutely no reason to believe that the peonies and daffodils in the garden here were any different. You couldn’t hear them talk or yelp, but maybe that’s because humans didn’t speak flower, or maybe because their vocalizations were at a frequency humans just couldn’t hear. Maybe it was both.

Ellie decided it was probably both.

She had come out here to the garden to get some reading - and thinking - done. All she was getting done now was yelling at this nitwit who, from the sound of it, had misplaced his pet rat.

With good reason, too, it would seem. If she was this chap’s rat, she would’ve run straight away. Actually, she probably would have nipped his finger for good measure, then run away.

Ellie grimaced as the boy wiped his nose on his sleeve. “Speaking of impolite,” she remarked, her nose wrinkled in disgust. “Perhaps that’s what your rat ran away. He was tired of being…,” she looked up from her long enough to regard the boy, “...dribbled on.”

She changed her mind. If she were this boy’s rat, she would not have nipped his finger before running. Unsanitary.

“You’ve got a wand, haven’t you?” Ellie continued, without looking up from the book she was reading. “Why not just Summon it and be done?”
