Biography:
Ben has always had high standards. They probably come from his mother, Linnie, who was never satisfied with anything. Never satisfied with her husband’s affections (or lack thereof), never satisfied with the temperature of her meal, never even satisfied with magic. She expected more of it, it could do so much and still not make her happy. Ben wanted to be the one thing that she was satisfied with. Every perfect grade he ever got, every skill he ever mastered was for her, and still she was unsatisfied. He inherited a bit of that. His expectations were always higher than realistic, yet there was always some boy who managed to fall miles below them. And for those boys, his expectations fell too.

He fell too hard. Always. And even before he knew he was falling, he always noticed the other boys a little too much. He noticed how hard they worked, and how he worked harder. When it came to most of them, that irritated him. They got more recognition. He could just imagine their parents praising them. But there was always one boy. One lesser boy who he didn’t mind so much. He didn’t think about how he could be better than him--the string of hims, all different. When he was younger he always tried to befriend them, to be as close to them as he could. As he got older, he wanted to be close to them in different ways. He wanted to hold their hands, to share his lunch with them, to brush the hair out of their face. This was his downfall and he knew it. How could he be the best if he let every cute boy in the wizarding world distract him? He always let them take up all of his time, time he should have been spending on improving himself.

He was determined to change that this year. To keep his guard up and not allow himself to be swayed by a single average boy. Because he was not average. He was exceptional. The smartest he knew, the most well dressed with the best hair. The most charming, the best sense of humor and to top it off - unbelievably humble.[/i]

He always followed every rule to a T, just as mother advised. Father, on the other hand, always insisted Ben should use his family name.

“You’re a Collins, Ben. That name holds weight. That name can get you places.”

And Ben resented that. He didn’t need a name to succeed. Certainly not the name of his father. Ben didn’t meet his expectations either. He was too soft. Never commanding enough, or not in the right ways. It seemed he could never win. Mother expected him to be better. Father expected him to be someone else.

And while he always tried to be better, he couldn’t be who he isn’t. He would always be a little light on his feet, he would never be the strongest, but he made up for that by being the smartest. He’d never admit it, but his faults were not hard to miss. He takes on too much work, too many problems that aren’t his own. “I can do them better,” he insists. And maybe he could, but maybe he wanted the validation.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request:
Slytherin

Personality:
Upon your first conversations with Ben, you’ll notice that he is short and dismissive. He isn’t always like this, though. Befriend him and you will be fiercely protected by harsh wit and the sarcastic crunch of his favorite crisps.

He’d like you to believe that he’s completely dedicated to his schoolwork, that he’s the best and the brightest of his peers. And he certainly is one of them, but he’s easily distracted by romantic possibility. He doesn’t think of himself as a hopeless romantic, but more as a logical, reasonable person who is constantly betrayed by his unkillable romantic alter ego.

Appearance:
Ben is tall and slender, with soft curls that are never quite as tamed as he would like them to be. His robes are never quite as a pressed as they could be. Wherever he is, he has his books with him. Always ready to study… even if the books appear to be more of an accessory than anything of actual use. His green eyes don’t quite match his sharp tongue and irritated sighs, they’re much too soft. Just another of his weakness he wishes not to share.

Option 2:

Ben sat in the garden, reading a history book he had picked out from the library. It was extracurricular reading for one of his classes. He picked this book specifically because he assumed no one else would. It was the longest, most complex of the options they were given. He knew his professor would be impressed. He could just imagine the response he would get, the praise of his teacher, the jealousy of all the other students who could only dream of being as dedicated and hardworking as he was.

Suddenly his reading was interrupted by someone. Ugh! How rude. Couldn’t he see that Ben was studying?

He watched the boy. He first noticed that they boy was not his type. He then noticed that it was like watching a trainwreck, clomping all over the place, sneezing, leaking. Is there not an anti-allergy charm he could have used? Ben rolled his eyes, watching the hurricane of a person in front of him. He wasn’t exactly surprised, but he didn’t expect him to say actually anything.

"Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

“It’s not polite to stomp around the garden like a maniac while people are trying to read, either.”

He rolled his eyes. This boy actually thought he had the right to use attitude. Ben was the one reading peacefully and quietly, not bothering anyone. Ben was the one preparing for his class. And not to mention that attitude was his thing.

“But since I can clearly see you’re in distress. I will help you.”

You’re welcome. If only everyone were as helpful and generous as he.
He placed his books in his satchel and stood up, ready for whatever disastrous situation he was about to subject himself to.
