Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Vanessa Naoi

Birthday: February 5th, 1940

Hometown: Oxfordshire, England

Bloodline: Muggleborn

Magical Strength (pick one): Charms

Magical Weakness (pick one): Transfiguration

Year (pick two): First Year(First choice), Second Year(Second choice)

Biography:
Love…love can be fickle. And amidst the chaos, hatred, and confusion of war? Well, love can drive someone to do even the most craziest of things.

Such was the case of Vanessa Naoi, born in the rainy month of February to a relatively affluent Muggle couple, Luan and Iris Naoi. Luan, a young Vietnamese man, had come to the city of Oxford for business. It was here that he decided to settle down and marry the love of his life, Iris Gray, a charming British woman…though all was not meant to end well. Even though the war was dying down in the Muggle World, the years had affected the Naoi family business. Having suffered terrible losses, it was made even more complicated as their family was to grow bigger with a baby boy.

Because of the financial problems and the urgency of the situation, it was decided for Vanessa, now six years old, to stay for a year or two in South Oxfordshire with Iris’s eccentric and isolated mother, Camilla Gray. Though Iris had initially, oddly expressed hesitation at this decision, it was due to the desperation of the situation  that she gave in to her husband’s urging. In the meantime, Iris and Luan would see whether a new job offer in Paris would benefit them.

Eventually, they succeeded in their endeavors and returned to Camilla’s manor two years later, now with a two year old son named Leo in tow. In the week that they stayed at the manor, a magical  incident occurred between Vanessa and her new brother, leaving the boy with a slight injury. Though it was nothing serious, her parents were fearful. At her explanation of what had happened her parents gave no reaction, though her mother was tensed in a way that betrayed her knowledge of what had occurred. Vanessa herself was not quite sure what she had done, for it was the first time her abilities had clearly began to show.

At their horror of discovering what Vanessa truly was, and how she had hurt her own brother, they left immediately…leaving her behind as well. Her mother had mentioned that Vanessa was “just like Camilla, a wretched misfit.” Throughout the whole ordeal, Vanessa was on the verge of crying, crying until she could let no more tears fall, yet all she could do was clench her jaw and let a look of true grit take over her face. She would not let them see how much she missed them.

Of course, this was the story her grandmother had told her; only what she could recall from her memory. Vanessa couldn’t quite remember the exact details: what she did to her brother, what their old home had looked like. She couldn’t remember the features of her mother or father…or her brother really. It was only because of time, she told herself. Time heals. Time forgets. But perhaps there was more…much more that she forgot.

Nevertheless, it was here in the lush environment of Oxfordshire that Vanessa began to forget-really forget- about her former life and flourish under the care of her only family, grandmother, and fellow witch, Camilla. The next three years were a whirlwind of new experiences; it was a life that she had never dreamt of having, but one she was beginning to love more and more. One that she would soon be thrust in at full force as the days ticked down until the inevitable, wondrous arrival of her acceptance letter to this mysterious and wonderful place called Hogwarts.

House Request: GRYFFINDOR!!!

Personality: Despite her past experiences, Vanessa remains a bright character, fond of pranks and jokes that make herself and others smile. She’s also rather spirited, bold with her comments and in possession of a sharp wit for one at her age. But don’t fret, if she deems you a worthy and interesting enough person, her loyalty is as strong as iron. And though her grandma, a fine and elegant woman mind you, has taught her time and time again to think before you leap, she is definitely one that acts on impulse and is not afraid to stand up to someone who is clearly in the wrong. In fact, her hot temper probably doesn’t help her in those sticky situations either...

Appearance: Somewhat like her grandmother, Vanessa always attempts to appear elegant and graceful...well, maybe not all the time, but hey, key word here, she attempts to! Though maybe that’s because of the constant reminders from Camilla to “sit up straight!” and “is that some bird’s nest? Brush your hair!” and her own personal favorite, “stay out in the sun enough and you’ll be as dark as the night!” Of course, despite all the nagging and stern remarks from her grandmother, Vanessa thinks her long raven hair frames her face quite nicely (but Camilla says she isn’t allowed to dye it neon blue, her favorite color), and though she may be a bit short compared to the other kids, Camilla says she makes up for it with her dark brown eyes and cheekbones, “perfectly fit for a British queen.” Freckles also spot her face, and Camilla likes to remind her of the time she tried to play connect the dots…”it took a couple of hours to scrub the bloody ink off!”

“You blasted rat! Where are you?”

Vanessa quite enjoyed the outdoors: the nice breeze, the warm sun rays, the beautiful flowers. What she didn’t enjoy-AT ALL- was someone charging on in and disturbing the peace! Who on earth in their right mind would be making such a racket?! Attempting to locate the hooligan that was stumbling around on all the pretty flowers, Vanessa made a full turn before seeing a figure nearby, stomping on some poppies and ripping them up from the ground.

Now that, THAT was crossing the line.

Marching over to the boy, Vanessa stopped right in front Hugh, completely disregarding personal space. That is, until she noticed the string of snot connecting from his nose to his sleeve. Wrinkling her nose, she took a step backwards, putting her at a safe distance from booger boy. Placing her hands on her hips, she looked up at the boy who seemed to tower over her-not that it bothered her at all.  It took him a minute to notice, but when he did realize she was standing there, his response was anything but apologetic.

”Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare.”

Her mouth agape in surprise at his response, she stood there in disbelief at what he had said. His tone was haughty, arrogant even! Why- the nerve of him! Still recovering from his outright rudeness, the best Vanessa could muster up was a stomp of her foot on the ground before replying,

“Well, I wouldn’t be staring if you hadn’t given me a reason to! Can’t you go look for your darn rat somewhere else?” Staring him down, she continued on, “Besides, I don’t think he really wants you to find him, especially with the ruckus you’re making.”

Hah! She got him there. Vanessa: 1, Snotty Boy: zero!

Hi Vanessa, and welcome to the site!

Your application looks great, I just want to clarify one thing before we can get you accepted. You claim that Vanessa's blood status is Muggleborn, but also that her grandmother is a witch too. I'm assuming this is her biological grandmother, so Vanessa would actually be a Halfblood as she has magical ancestry (and her mother would technically be a Squib).

If her grandmother is biologically related, could you edit the 'Bloodline' section to reflect Vanessa's Halfblood status?

Once you've made the required changes, please repost your entire revised application below (if Camilla isn't her biological grandmother, no need to repost everything, just post below to let me know), and we'll be more than happy to take another look. Thanks!
schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning
waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile
I watch her go with a surge of that well-known sadness
and I have to sit down for a while

Hello! Thank you very much for your kind welcome. Camilla Gray is not Vanessa's biological grandmother, so I believe in that case Vanessa would still be considered a Muggleborn. However, I see now how that could be easily confused. Do you have any tips on how I should reword it so everything is a bit clearer? Thank you for your help!

Vanessa's hope was restored in her family when they visited a few months later. She had thought that maybe they felt guilty, or maybe that they would forgive her for something she couldn't quite understand. And maybe they did feel a hint of regret, of remorse at leaving her behind. But soon enough, the time spread longer in between their visits. And then the months turned into a year, before the visits stopped altogether. It wasn't all too bad, as the years went by. After all, time heals. Time forgets.

Nevertheless, it was here in the lush environment of Oxfordshire that Vanessa began to forget-really forget- about her former life and flourish under the care of her only family, grandmother, and fellow witch, Camilla.
