Family History

Kim Young-gi was born a muggle in Japanese occupied South Korea. His earliest memory is of his own realization that being who he was in his own country was something to be ashamed of. As he developed unknowingly into a wizard, a few other things developed as well. Young-gi was separated from his mother in a crowded space, and after much jostling, he noticed that he was able to walk without being overly hassled. The same people that normally tormented him because of his lighter hair and the shape of his eyes paid him no notice. One of them even asked him if he was lost, as though she were concerned for him. When, finally, he found his mother, she hadn’t recognized him. It was no surprise really. In his fear, he had stopped looking like himself, and had blended in with his Japanese occupiers.

It was that day that he realised that he could manipulate the basics of his physical appearance at will. Though he didn’t understand why, Young-gi knew that he had to keep it to himself. He used it to get himself through crowds, to get service, to get better jobs when he was older, to get through school where even there the discrimination was almost too much. Used sparingly, his magical proclivities remained hidden from most of the world, but when he met Sook-ja, he could no longer keep it to himself. Sharing his secret with the woman he would one day wed was a balm to all the suffering he had endured as a child. It was something both of them could relate to, especially as muggleborns.

The two were married almost as soon as they left school, and while they had originally intended to settle down in Young-gi’s village, the violence and discrimination appeared to be unending. When Sook-ja became pregnant, they knew what they had to do. Taking as little with them as possible, the small Kim family snuck their way into England, and made a life for themselves as the Kings of London.

Upon arrival in England, Young-gi and Sook-ja were quick to rename themselves. Young-gi and Sook-ja now known as Hugh and Sommer, respectively. They still work to support the family even in their advanced ages, though they mostly function as caregivers to the younger generation of Kings.

Lazarus King is the youngest son of Hugh and Sommer, but the apple fell very far from the tree. No longer a recognized member of the family, Lazarus has been disowned and all connections have been severed (or so they think).
