Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Vanya Sonechka Volkov

Birthday:  18 November, 1941

Hometown: Revda in Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia

Bloodline: Muggleborn

Magical Strength (pick one): Transfiguration

Magical Weakness (pick one): Divination

Year (pick two):
Choice A: 4th year
Choice B: 5th year

Biography:
Vanya was born to a poor, strict, traditionalist muggle family. Her parents, Borya and Evgenia Volkov, had tried for years to have a baby, and were less than impressed with the tiny, pale, squalling girl that the nurse presented to them. They'd had two strapping boys before her, Artem and Orel, and were hoping for a third to help them around the home and work for the family. What they got was Vanya, who was perpetually small, perpetually sickly, and perpetually useless.

These days, Vanya doesn't talk much about her childhood, and given the circumstances she grew up in, that's anything but a surprise. The family was ridden with poverty, and Evgenia and Borya, embittered by the harrowing nature of their lives, had no love lost for their children, and gave them minimal love or attention. Artem, the oldest of the three Volkov children, ended up taking over the parental role. While Orel and Vanya, both coping with their circumstances in different ways, constantly butted heads, Artem held the siblings together. He mediated the arguments between Orel and Vanya, and became both of their closest confidante, the best friend, authority figure, and support structure that both needed amidst the constant turmoil of their home lives.

Then, when she was seven years old, Vanya began to show signs of magic. It was only little things--her favorite stuffed animal's missing button eye showing up on her bed, stains in her only good sweater disappearing of their own accord, and the like--but her parents were horrified. Though not zealots by any means, her parents were devout, and considered the magic that Vanya demonstrated to be unholy. They didn't want her in the house, and they certainly didn't want her tainting their two working boys.

So, they dumped her on Evgenia's sister, Devora. While Devora did care about Vanya and wanted to understand her, she wasn't exactly well versed in childcare, and Vanya, reeling from the sudden shift and desperately missing Artem, was a hellion to care for. It took them years to reach any sort of understanding, and even now, their relationship is a...unique one, comprised mostly of Vanya making snarky jabs and Evgenia scolding her. Still, though, they do love each other deep down, and Devora has been trying for a long time to find an institute that could help Vanya hone her unusual abilities. Up until Vanya's preteen years, Evgenia was just homeschooling her, and, being a muggle herself, she couldn't cater to everything that Vanya needed.

It was by pure, miraculous chance that Evgenia happened to find herself involved with a wizard. The traveler, Stanford Windmire, grew close to Evgenia through a year of courtship, and as soon as she confided in him what Vanya could do, he knew that she was a witch. It was only due to his advice that Evgenia moved with Vanya to England, where they currently live, and with his aid, they enrolled Vanya as a fourth year incoming student.

Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: N/A

Personality:
Possibly Vanya's most admirable trait is her loyalty. Once someone earns her affections, she will stand beside them until the end of time and will jump to their defense at the slightest hint of mistreatment. She has proven herself to be incredibly resourceful and quick-thinking young girl with a knack for getting herself out of difficult situations in spite of her lack of practical experience, and is a very fast learner. Though her sense of humor can be rather morbid, there's no denying that she has one and likes to joke around once she gets comfortable with someone. She's more anxious than she'd ever admit, but she almost always manages to pull through and find courage inside of her, and can actually be surprisingly bold when the situation calls for it. She's very hardworking and very driven, and has learned to be independent through a lifetime of fending mostly for herself. She's naturally persuasive and has a talent for deception, and feels absolutely no guilt about lying through her teeth to get out of trouble or attain something she desires.

On the other hand, the tendency to hold a grudge is one of Vanya's vices. Just as she's eternally loyal once someone proves themselves to her, she will never forgive someone if they've wronged her, and will treat them with disdain whenever they interact in the future. Though she's never trying to be, she often comes across as insensitive and blunt purely because she can not read social cues and struggles to empathize with others. She just says what she thinks without stopping to consider how it may make those around her feel, and it confuses her greatly when people get mad at her for it, only to turn around and preach "honesty is the best policy." That seems awfully hypocritical to her. She can be incredibly impulsive, and even with her strong moral compass, can be disturbingly ruthless and aggressive, especially when the safety of someone she cares about is put in jeopardy. While usually rather quiet, she is hot-headed and sharp-tongued when upset. She can come across as arrogant due to her complete lack of regard for what others think of her and blatant acceptance of her own skills and good traits, the truth of the matter is that she grapples a lot with self-worth.

Appearance:
Vanya's aunt Devora once described her as looking like "someone left her in the rain all night, and it washed away all her color." While not the most flattering description, it's not entirely off the mark. Vanya has been pale as snow from the moment she was born, and her sallow complexion isn't helped by her frequent bouts of sickness. She has a narrow face and overall bony physique, with a skinny frame and spindly limbs. She's short for her age at only 4'11, and is made to look even smaller than she is by her ill fitting, hand-me-down clothes.

Her eyes are wide and round, colored a dull blue and topped by thin eyebrows. Framing her gaunt face is long, stringy, milky blonde hair. It's almost long enough now to reach her waist, and the ends are a mess of brittle dead ends. It's seldom styled, or even brushed for that matter, but she does braid it on occasion, though it's more for practicality than fashion.

Option 2:

That rat of his was in for it now.

The gray little rascal had disappeared from his clutches at breakfast. Again.

Before Hugh even knew what was happening, Merlin had shot across the floor, somehow managing to avoid all the feet walking across the hall and had escaped through the open doors.

Which meant that Hugh was now stomping through rows of flowers and other various flora, searching for the small creature. It was like the rat knew Hugh was allergic to most flowers. Merlin always chose to run to the gardens whenever he got away from Hugh. It was as if the rat did not want to have him for an owner.

Hugh had named his pet Merlin because he had hoped the powerful name would give the rat more incentive to be more than a rat. Not that he expected Merlin to change into a wizard or anything, but rats were just so...useless, for the most part. With a name like Merlin, Hugh thought it might give the rat purpose.

The only purpose Merlin seemed to have was getting away from Hugh as often as possible.

As the fifth year trudged into the second row of flowers, not taking much care to avoid trampling the first row, he felt the first sneeze building up pressure in his nose and behind his eyes.

"You blasted rat! Where are you?"

He pulled apart a section of bright red flowers; he didn't know what they were called because he despised flowers, and ducked his head low to peer into the depths of the flowerbed. It was moving closer in proximity to the flowers that finally did it. Hugh took in three great breaths and then let out an almighty sneeze. It was strong enough to disturb some of the dirt on the ground before him.

Groaning, he stood up again and wiped his nose on his sleeve. It was as he was turning his head, his nose running up and down his arm, that movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention. Normally one who preferred to put his best face forward, Hugh was a bit embarrassed to be caught wiping his runny nose on his robes.

Nevertheless, Hugh put on his best haughty voice. albeit a bit thickly with his plugged nose and said, "Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

OPTION 2 (RESPONSE):
Vanya didn't know quite what to think. It was bizarre, to have so much open space entirely at her disposal. She had spent hours already exploring the seemingly infinite corridors and endless grounds of Hogwarts, and still, she felt as though she'd only seen a fraction of what the school had to offer. Then again, her perception of its size may have been a little biased, considering she had spent her entire life otherwise in small, small spaces.

Her parents house had only been intended to have two bedrooms, and since they were adamant that she couldn't share with her brothers, they had converted the pantry into a bedroom for Vanya. Then, when she'd first moved in with her aunt, she'd had to stay inside almost all of the time, in her itty bitty little house, and their new apartment in England was ever smaller. Hogwarts seemed gargantuan in comparison. Vanya finished trekking up the hill, and paused.

What a curious boy. Vanya tilted her head, watching from a few feet back as the stranger tore through the garden, displacing dirt and flowers alike. That didn't seem to be a particularly lucrative task. What could it possibly accomplish, besides upsetting gardeners and disturbing the flora? Wizards really were strange. She'd only properly been a part of their world for a few months, and it seemed like every single one she'd met had been an oddball. Even her aunt's boyfriend, a kindly scholar of a wizard, was strange. Vanya scrunched up her nose, just a little, as he wiped his nose on the sleeve of his robes, and in the next moment, he seemed to catch sight of her. She bristled a little at the snappish question, and crossed her arms.

"Well, if you don't want people to look at you, you shouldn't dig in the gardens," Vanya answered bluntly, jutting her chin out and frowning at the stranger boy, "Rummaging in the petunias isn't the best way to avoid drawing attention." Her gaze flickered over the damage done to the garden, and she quirked a thin, pale eyebrow. "Why are you doing that, any way? I don't think you're going to get much from it."

Hello, Vanya --

Welcome to the site! Your application is looking great, I just wanted to clarify a couple of things. In your bio you wrote:

Quote

In this portion, did you mean Devora the aunt, or her mother Evgenia? I was just a bit confused since in your RP sample you mentioned 'her aunt's boyfriend' which made me think you meant Devora in this portion. If you could clarify this and repost your Biography portion below (no need to repost your entire application), I can review it again!

If you have any questions, feel free to message me! Thanks!

Hi, Vanya!

Thanks for clarifying that for us! It looks like you're still using Evgenia's name in some places where it should possibly be Devora instead?

If it is supposed to be Evgenia, could you edit your biography to clarify how/when Vanya returned to her real parents? It it's actually still supposed to be Devora, could you go through your biography and replace the instances of Evgenia's name where they should be Devora instead to minimise confusion?

Once you've made the required clarifications/edits, please repost your entire revised application below (you should be able to quote your original application using one of the buttons beneath your profile and then make the necessary edits), and we'll be more than happy to take another look.

Let me know if you have any questions or need any help. Thank you!
