mid-july 1947; his parents' house

"I think you should take it."

"Here's the thing." Cyrus grimaced in response, a spasm of irritation that darted swiftly over his features and was promptly replaced by a more neutral expression. "I'd like the job, I really would, but--"

"They don't hand out transfers like this to just anybody."

"I know, Dad, but--"

"And you realise that they're calling it a transfer, but it's actually a promotion."

"Yes, I realise that." He was doing his best not to snap at his father now, his jaw clenching as he gritted his teeth together and wished for the millionth time that he hadn't brought it up with his father at all. But of course his mother would have said something anyway, and then he'd have been in an even worse position than he already was, and his father would have accused him of lying, and it all would have snowballed from there.

He'd done the right thing to tell him. Probably.

"So, what's the problem, then?"

"The problem is that you're all here." And even at thirty years old, Cyrus Helios Galanis was still terrified at the prospect of leaving his entire family in Greece and moving all the way to Britain. He didn't quite know when he had become an independent adult, but he did know that it had happened accidentally and without his permission.

"Not all of us. Dmitri will help you out, get you settled."

"Right."

And that was the end of that conversation.

the next day; at work

It was with a shaking hand that he knocked at the office door. Cyrus wasn't the type to quake in his boots whenever one of his superiors walked by. He wasn't scared of his boss - he liked to think that he wasn't scared of anybody. But today, he was nervous.

"Come in."

"Alex, hi." There was the slightest quiver in his voice. His palms were sweating. He really didn't want to be here, didn't want to be doing this. "I just wanted to talk to you about the overseas job offer."

"Wonderful. Take a seat."

The man extended a hand towards the plush, vacant armchair, and Cyrus slid gratefully into it. He felt a little more stable sitting down, a little less like he was going to faint.

"Have you made your decision?"

"Er..."

(Technically, his father had.)

"Yes."

"Well, that's very good news." The smile on his boss's face rivalled that of his father's.

"Yes, I suppose it is. When... When will I be going?"

"If we start processing now, you can be gone by next month. Sound good?"

No.

"Yes." Cyrus forced a smile. "I can't wait."

Option Two -
The snow had been falling steadily all morning and it didn't look like it was going to stop any time soon. Joshua Campbell scrunched his face up in a frown as he lifted his gaze to look to the sky. Snow. It really was quite a bother.

And it certainly didn't make it better that Diagon Alley seemed to be getting more and more crowded. Joshua sighed and pointed his wand at the large box that was currently placed on the doorstep of his shop. He had to get going. He had an order to deliver.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" The elderly man muttered and watched the box hover in the air for a moment. Honestly, did St. Mungo's really need that much tinsel? And with glitter of all things? He sighed again. If it hadn't been for the rather convincing stamp on the order, he would have been likely to believe it had been a prank by one of those orphaned rascals living up there.

Oh well, there was no point in waiting. Joshua deftly stirred the box down the doorstep and out onto the street, carefully levitating it above the heads of the crowd.

"Coming through! Coming through!" His voice sounded over the chatter of the crowd. "Keep out! Move ahead! Go on!" This was going way too slow. People were in the way and walking like they had all day! He huffed. Luckily the road was down hill.

"Coming through! Coming th--- arrrgh!" Joshua let out a loud shout as his feet suddenly slipped in the snow and sent him, the box, and several long strands of tinsel tumbling into the person who had been walking in front of him.

"For Merlin's sake!" Joshua muttered angrily as he hurried to his feet again, red and gold tinsel now decorating his black coat. "I am so sorry! This blasted snow!" He looked apologetic at the person he had crashed into.

Roleplay Response:

If there was one thing he had learned during his short time in Britain, it was that the weather was extremely temperamental. Sunny one day, raining the next. And Christmas here, Cyrus had discovered, meant snow.

Snow in Greece was different. It frosted the tops of the mountains, and it stayed well away from his home in the centre of the town. Snow here was not quite so polite. It was an intruder into even the smallest of places, and nothing was safe, not even his warm woollen socks. How the snow had managed to get into his shoe, Cyrus had no idea, but he wasn't very impressed at all.

Wet feet did not make for a very happy man.

"Coming through! Coming th--- arrrgh!"

"What the--"

The rest of his words dissolved into a yelp as he collided with another man, a box, and-- was that tinsel?

"I am so sorry! This blasted snow!"

"It's fine, it's fine." Cyrus was quick to recover his balance, and he reached out a hand towards the other man too, just to check that he wasn't going to topple over again. "It's not your fault, it's the weather." It was obvious from the irritated tone of his words that he was certainly not a fan of the snow or the cold or the wet, in any degree.

(Oh, what he wouldn't have given to be back in Greece at this moment, dealing with sand between his toes instead of melting ice.)

"Here, you've got a bit of tinsel..." Leaning forward, Cyrus pointed at the colourful decorations that adorned the man's coat. A friendly smile tugged at his lips, "At least you look festive?"
