CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character name: Cadogan Cadwallader

Previous and/or Current Character(s) if applicable: Jamie Duncan

Character age: 72

Character education: Hogwarts - Ravenclaw

Strength and weaknesses:

Cadogan's major flaw is his disdain for losing of letting others down. Ever since he were a child he has strived his hardest to do better than his naturally gifted siblings and work above their skill set. Each time his siblings were praised he had to work ten times harder to rise above them if possible.

Academia is a passion and a strength for Cadogan. He has a theoretical and mathematical mind and finds studios and long studies easier than most. However, this means the opposite situation of practical application and physical work often bears hard upon the elder wizard.

Cadogan believes that every student is gifted in their own right but persecutes the lazy to additional work as to motivate them. This can cause stressful relations with students as he believes their success is a reflection of his own. In this regard Cadogan is very prideful.

Due to his family upbringing, Cadogan struggles with a loss in many forms. From the emotional and physical loss of friends and family to the loss of dignity in putting his reputation on the line. The drive to not lose brings him to often overwork himself.

Cadogan is quite good at wizarding chess and other logically minded games.

Unfortunately, Cadogan finds it hard to forgive faults and mistakes of his peers, family and  most likely, students. He lets people attempt to amend ttheir situation but more often than not will treat troublemakers or weaker students harshly than those who shine brightly.

Physical description:
Cadogan is an aged man yet still maintains a healthy physique for his age. He stands just at 5'10 and has broad shoulders which suggest a genetic line of builders or strong craftsmen. However, Cadogan is far from muscular. A wiry, thin man with the strength just to carry a few books by first glance. Due to his age, he walks with a slouch and corrects his stance with an ivory headed cane which is on him at all times. At times Cadogan walks with a slight wobble due to a slightly bad hip and favoritism of one leg.

At times, Cadogan wears dress robes to his lessons and often maintains his appearance in lesson breaks. Corrective lenses sit upon his nose which he adjusts often. When addressing room his character speaks more than his appearance, each word straightening his back when calling out and instructing his peers. He often is in a suit, tie and matches his shoes to his glasses in a dragon-leather black. Fine family crested clasps adorn his cuffs and in personal time a pipe is never too far from his hand.

In all he encompasses the air of a prideful man and when standing is often straight and authoritative. He pushes out his chest and relies on his personal presence to keep things orderly.

Personality:

Cadogan is a calm and collected individual with steady patience. He is able to tolerate nearly any mischievous situation due to the years of being a lawyer under his belt. However, one would find him quick to anger at a constant spread of idiocy where a student did not learn from their mistakes. He prides himself in work ethic and cleverness above all things and appreciates similar attitudes in his students. He is not usually kind or understanding of emotional or childish troubles due to his age distance of his students.

Cadogan is quick to draw favoritism of those in his own blood group and has a preference for pure blooded witches and wizards which could cause issues in an open schooling lesson. Atop of this, Cadogan prides his family achievements more than others and often marks them more critically than they deserve.  He is likely to reward bright students and apply challenges for their minds to keep them sharp.

Cadogan is also easily restless and needs to keep himself active or busy or he grows irritable and bored. Even when semi-retired he often finds himself teaching or directing younger peoples in proper work ethic as well as organizing family affairs.

Hopes and dreams. Why are you teaching at Hogwarts?:
Cadogan would like a few last years of Academia outside of the legal world before being forced by his children to officially retire. At the age of seventy two, he is using his experience as a working professional to try and gain entry and a position upon the theoretical side of the wizarding world.

Ancient Runes.

During his own years at Hogwarts, Cadogan was a NEWTS student in Ancient runes and often passed with O's in the subject. He continued his own personal studies in the subject as an adult and in his golden years realised the importance of the quiet art. If he can turn more than one student into a passionate follower he will consider his job well done.

Biography:

What was Cadogan's life now? An endless telling of 'Grandfather, be proud of me', of 'I miss Her. Cadogan didn't know anymore than his children. He didn't know anything further on the mysteries of what came in life after work had finished. Cadogan felt far from the schoolboy he once was. The academic achiever, the wiz lawyer. All were all but memories now.

During his school years Cadogan was a man to be revered for his excellence. A Ravenclaws mind fit atop the prestige of several pure blooded generations guided him to excellence in nearly all of his endeavours. From wizard-chess club to the student newspaper, Cadogan was involved in academia until his graduating year where public policy and law became the focus of the man.

Many laws today were near penned under the elders hand. Anti-discrimination laws, inheritence laws, general public assistance and many strange at the time pro-muggleborn laws were drafted initially on his mahogany desk. The illusion of that man was near faded. Those memories were things only evident now in newspaper clippings.

In the summer of 48, Cadogan had had another issue with his health, what people all knew as a 'Stroke'. A wizard of then seventy he was not failing due to any magical means but only his own mortality as age crept up on him from the shadows. On a small gathering where his oldest son and daughter had been summoned to again discuss modern issues. The barriers had fallen and so had the security of the wizarding world. The locals oogled at his family and their attentions had been turned to improving their public standing and how they dressed to the locals.

Cadfael had turned to him with that same incredulous look he had when concerned over his fathers well being. He had fit into the fathering role well, and now it seemed he was trying to make up for lost bonding time. "You're staying here." It was easier to placate his son than tell his plans truthfully.

Cadogan rolled his thumbs over his cane's head, looking up from the carpet to nod. "As you say." Both of them had been dancing around the conversation as well. Eirian had died, and Cadfael too was worried about losing another family member. It was unknowing to his children that he had already organised his half-year trip. A last hoo-rah before he retired from academia officially.

Cadogan had planned something spectacular. A trip from Scandinavia to the far reaches of the eastern wonder, Japan. His youthful interest of runes rekindled upon a late night reading of his old studies. Why the subject was not offered at his granddaughters year of school was something he desperately needed to remedy.  Each trip providing a notebook full of facts and knowledge from specialists until his luggage bulged with the information of the orient and afar. But what good was this knowledge if not shared?

When he arrived home after 11 months away he still felt unfulfilled. While grandchildren, great grandchildren, and his own children continuously planned out his own life for him Cadogan had better ideas. His time would be invested until he had little of it left to give - teaching others the more important parts of magic. The lesser known parts of magic.

SAMPLE ROLEPLAY
(

Roleplay Response:
Cadogan walked the halls with his familiar hobble. His cane compensating for the small falter in his left side. His robes flicking on every strong and over exaggerated stride to keep the gaze of lunch-goers off his disability. No one knew him here, but that meant nothing when reputation was everything. His pocket watch clicked in time with each of his step[s. Marking each staggered step up the winding stairwell.

Only one cautionary glance was given to the watch as it chimed over to 2:01. Late, by one minute thus far. It would perhaps due to the stairs be (by his own calculations) 2:05 by the time he could carry himself, bad hip and all up the cool corridor to the woman's office. When he knocked he offered that same pocket watch another glance. 'Ah, correct again.' he scolded himself, clearing his throat before he knocked thrice upon the ornate door.

The headmaster in his time was a little more of a loon, a former Hufflepuff with aspirations for greatness which he had heard ended with a strange experimentation regarding dragon's blood and several unicorn fowls. Cadogan however had done his research before coming today. Anneka Ivanova was a woman not to be messed about with. Sorted into Slytherin and a academic mind beyond many of the people he himself had looked over during his legal career. She could have gone far outside of this school but had set her path in maintaining order and a safe academic space for the youth of the wizarding world. In its own right, it was respectable. Though, not overly ambitious for a snake.

He entered with his cane, bowing his head respectfully to the head mistress. "My sincerest apologies." He hated grovelling, but his face gave away no indication this was the case. He had a lifetime of acting under his belt. Social compliance was important when making an impression. This woman was no one to be trifled with. She looked as organised as himself and with a family name that was as well regarded as his own. "You look as well as ever." He lifted his cane as explanation to her wordless query. It was hard enough getting around with only one good side alone. The stairs alone had added an additional challenge he had not expected.

His time at hogwarts had never found him in the headmasters office.  "It is an honor to be back in these halls, and I will not waste any more of your valuable time, Headmistress. Shall we proceed quickly with my interview?" Soft spoken and polite. Things very contrary to himself were hard to convey, Cadogan struggling to speak without his normal authoritative tone. He knew this was necessary - but he disdained being in a position of vulnerability.

Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Jamie Duncan

Birthday: July 7th

Hometown: Inverness, Scottland

Bloodline:
Halfblood

Magical Strength (pick one):
Charms

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Divination

Year (pick two): Seventh - Repeating

Biography:
Jamie grew up in the shadow of his father who was a proud man of heritage who could track his lineage back tens of generations. He participated in all things Scottish. The highland games, a piper band, and Scottish tap dancing. Jamie was in his youth expected to do the same alongside his three brothers. Nothing seemed to change for a long while and some would sit restlessly in the same routines.

Jamie was one of these people. Each morning before breaking fast with his family he would explore the gully behind his house, find all manners of things strange and interesting (at least, in his imagination). By his ninth birthday, he realized some of these strange things were not so unreal at all. When he reached a hand into a hollow log he found his hand bitten – a small winged creature that was neither bird nor bug latched onto his now throbbing palm. No amount of shaking would remove the creature. It was not until he felt his will build up inside his chest like a kettle about to over boil did he feel the creature's fangs turn to gum – literal gum. While it still stuck it was unlike something he had ever experienced. He pried the thing from him, casting It aside as he ran to tell mother.

His mother was someone who would always believe his adventures and tails. No matter how long or far-fetched she spoke as if all the things he could ever imagine were a reality. When he approached her she chuckled and pulled him aside, showing him a bent stick she was intent of never letting out of her sight.

‘A wizard’ He would remember that. Was he a wizard? Like Merlin from his story books? How could that be accurate and how did father not know of his mother’s history. It was apparent she was better at keeping her secrets quiet than anyone would have thought.

On his 11th birthday, she vanished. But a letter arrived from no postman. It found its way into his room through an open window and was oddly sealed with vibrant red wax. At first his father thought it an elaborate joke. Yet another letter came sooner, one from his mother with a page for his father. It explained her history – how she was born a ‘muggle’

‘strange word’ he thought to himself at the time.

And that she discovered she could cast spells and use magic like in the fairy tales in her youth. She explained further that her son, their son ‘Jamie’ was also like she was. It took time for him to accept it but with enough time he and his son took time off to visit London. To send Jamie son away to a school where he would fit in. Maybe in this world he could find clues to why his mother fled - maybe he could find ways to relate to people regardless of their origins.

Jamie enjoyed his first year more than he would have thought. His love of people and stories drew him close to many in his year and enjoyed potions and transfiguration classes more than others. He was apprehensive of those in other houses but always gave everyone a chance to prove they didn’t meet up or did meet up to house mantra.

For his first few years of schooling, things went generally fine in terms of grades. Nothing atrocious apart from the one year he and his friend Briar had thought to take Divination thinking it was a class of lofty thoughts and many naps. They were quickly mistaken. In trouble every other week, Jamie earned himself a small reputation as a prankster. Which, in more cases than not lead him to detention again... and again and again.

On the end of his seventh year, he received word that home was not doing as well as it should have due to an illness with his father. Money had never been easy for the Duncans, with three wizards or witches in school and the expenses of books, robes, and other nick nacks piling up the family often relied on second-hand supplies and small loans to pay back shopkeepers. William's condition was stable, but not yet enough to run the family Inn. Being one of the oldest due to his brother Fergus's absence meant he would need to be responsible. His grades were lackluster, to begin with for the first part of the year and taking a temporary absence to help family was necessary.

Jamie packed his things, Bid his brother and cousin farewell and headed home. Hoping to repeat his final year once things stabilized the following summer.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: Hufflepuff

Personality:

Jamie is a charismatic individual whose presence often captures the room if he makes the effort for it. Although he is not a natural leader and chooses not to lead he appreciates having a wide circle of friends and helping those he can. He is relatively optimistic and finds joy in helping others. Unfortunately for Jamie, he has a giving heart and often gives more attention to his friends and loved ones than anyone else. he is quick to make an ally and slow to make an enemy.

Jamie has a love for mischief and never holds a grudge. If he can have innocent fun with someone without any chance of harming the person's feelings he will go for it without delay.

Due to his Scottish upbringing he often tries to tone down his accent and to code, most of his messages write in Scots-Gaelic. He has a keen hatred for quills and is often told off for carrying around pencils and other Muggle writing utensils.  In his dorm, he is one of the few who still hold onto their Muggle interests. He tries to persuade others that Muggle music is relevant as music about trolls and vampires.

Despite his care-free attitude to his classes, Jamie does well in what he puts the effort in and often fails only if the teacher makes the lesson too uninteresting.

On a good day Jamie can be found mentoring younger students in subjects he feels accomplished in or be jogging in the fields of the school. On a bad day, he is quiet and reserved. Often keeping to the quiet reaches of the library.

Appearance:

like his many siblings Jamie stands sternly and tall with brown-black colored hair and steely brown eyes. His hair is often brushed once before it is forgotten. The effort in his hair is minimal. In his childhood, his hair was lighter and faded several shades over a few short years. His shoulders are broad from his recent maturity and his voice recently broken to reflect someone who would seem to be quiet knowledgeable without even needing to read up on a topic.

His stern stoic standing nature often portrays an air of arrogance. Yet in class he slouches and often ruins his posture for the next few hours. He dresses often for winter even in the warmer seasons and is never seen without a jacket over his robes until it is confiscated for breaking school uniform regulations.
His walk is a saunter, often never in a hurry to get to anywhere. His expression set at level between annoyed and relaxed.

With age, he has only grown a little taller. The cleft in his chin a little more obvious and his dress sense has not improved since he was a youngling. Jamie often wears the same few outfits every week, having no real money to afford other clothing when out of lessons.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.
(one)

Jamie was as lost as lost could be. With several years under his belt he would have assumed that navigating these catacombs would be far easier than anything else. His genuis plan of lighting every other pillar up to mark his way back to the stair case had already backfired spectacularily when he noticed his glow-in-the-dark ink was wased away by the dampness of each stone.

Just his luck.

Small footsteps of someone echoed in the distance. The exit?! he leapt, nearly sprinting towards the sound. His own heavy laboured breathing beginning to bounce and echo off the walls until her question was asked. Emma Birch? was she looking for her sister? that name seemed all too familiar. Emma... Ah! right, the ghost. Though Jamie contemplated inwardly if it were possible, a ghost no one had really seen. Seeing as the school had plenty of ghosts that people could see, this one seemed more like superstition. Still, Jamie best leave this girl with something to go back with. Whoever sent her here was testing her mettle.

With a step in the shadows, he ducked behind one of he pillars and held out his wand. A simple, short lasting patronas wisp would do the trick. While he wasn't necessarily the best at the spell, he could at least concentrate on a formless mist to speak behind.

Jamie drew a deep breath and breathed as he spoke. Being older made it far harder to talk as a girl would, the shrill notes tearing up his throat. "It is I." he began in a girlish tone. "Emma Birch! you have disturbed my resting spot." It took all he had left not to snicker. The poor child would be frightened for days.

"What do you wish of me?"

Dating back to 650ce and the first king of Scotland. The Duncan lines have always been rather affluent and influential in muggle politics and lordship. Through the lines it was only a matter of time before witches and wizards started to be born under the name. While these witches merged into other families the influence of the muggle family kept them safe from persecution.

By the 1700's the Duncan family were wide spread enough to have a lord or lady in every Parrish across the Scottish country. Some sided with the English and the majority with the Scots during the Jacobite rebellions.  During this time the magical blood of the family migrated north past Perth towards Inverness.

However Magical lines dwindled around the 1800's and shortly after only a handful of Witches and Wizards claimed the legacy. However with the emergence of new wizarding blood the collective wealth of the original Duncan's remains for claim.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.

Jamie had been following the girl for some time after overhearing a few girls snickering behind their sleeves in the great hall. Whatever was going on was beyond the rules allowed to a first year, or any year.  It was even beyond him why anyone would accept to take such a treacherous dare.

The slytherins would think she were snooping – and the headmaster and teachers would punish her house accordingly.
Jamie tapped his chin, contemplating a course of action as he saw her push the past the first threshold of the dungeon. It was easy to stay hidden when he had practiced his footwork with all those years with his father’s highland and tap lessons.  Before she could turn he had hidden behind a grove in the wall, waiting for her voice to break the eerie silence of the halls. How could he make her challenge successful? He may himself get in trouble for encouraging this act of rebellion but it was his duty as ‘upper classman’ to  ensure she was an example for other students to follow. Especially because she was a Gryffindor. She had to be double the amount of brave anyone else was.

He reached for the wand hidden in a pocket of his robes. He pressed its top to his neck and spoke. His voice altered into a ghostly, somehow womanly cry. “Go… Go away!” he tried to mix in a few sobs. But in all honesty he wasn’t sure how to pretend to be a young girl. Or even an older one. “If you remain.. i’ll vanish. I am the ghost of…”
oh shoot, what was the name again?
“E-Emma. You have heard me. Now go, before you suffer the same faaaaaaaate~” He let the last vowels linger. In all terribly old horror movies, the ghosts wailed. Unfortunately for him the memory of these movies continued causing him to giggle into his own spell. The ghost of Emma now sounding a little maniacal before he dropped his wand, revealing his true location.
