Biography:
The clock struck midnight, and then they were gone.

Ӕthelstan Lowsley never minded he had an odd name. His father was a professor of Anglo-Saxon studies at Oxford University. He had named his son after Ӕthelstan the Glorious, the first king of England. His wife wanted him to have one normal name, so his middle name was Gregory.

Ӕthelstan looked all over the house, but everything was gone. Only he, his sister, and a few old books remained in the house.

There was always a talk about politics around the house. His father would talk about Prime Ministers, unions and corporations, Labour and Conservatives. As soon as he could read, he was reading books, political theory and history. Machiavelli was one of his favourites, much to his father’s chagrin. Not that he understood every concept of it, but he was able to grasp the basics. One day, he was going to be Prime Minister.

They couldn’t stay in the house: they had to leave. Out onto the streets. He had to steal food to survive.

He entered school, and was the top of his class. He worked hard in his studies. He played sports because he needed to become popular. He was classroom monitor, taking as much responsibility as he could. He didn’t play much with the other children, but he tried to cultivate allies.

The police officer didn’t accept his argument that evil needed to be done if necessary. It was only a piece of bread. He and his sister were thrown in the orphanage.

His father was so proud. He was accepted into one of the most prestigious prepetory schools in the UK. It would be another step on his path to becoming the Prime Minister. He kept reading his books, working towards his goal. Over the Christmas break, he decided he was going to reread Machiavelli's 'The Prince' from his dad's library.

A year and a half later, he got the letter. His goal changed. He wasn’t going to become Prime Minister anymore. He would be the most powerful wizard of all time.

He always liked New Years Eve. It was cold outside, so they didn’t go to the Green to watch the fireworks. Instead, they bundled up by the fire. They had the Telly on, and there was a counter going. He was counting out loud with his family. Five, four, three, two, one. The clock struck midnight.

And then they were gone.

Personality:
Ӕthelstan has always been ambitious in his goals. At first, he wanted to be a Prime Minister, because he wanted to have power, and that was the easiest way to get it. But when he found out he was a wizard, his goal shifted. Now, he could be the most powerful wizard in the world.

He always tried to be well-read. Not that he understood everything in the books that he read, he tries to emulate the ideas that he did. This came out more after his parents vanished: he clung on to these ideas to help distract him from his loss.

He also takes a very rationalistic worldview to things, and tends to view emotional reactions with distrust. Not that he doesn’t understand them, he tries to hide his own away, and can’t understand why others do not do the same.

Option 2:
Hogwarts was a magnificent castle. When he was younger, he had always wanted to win one. He had wished his father had been a lord but, unfortunately, it was not to be. Instead, he had thought about buying a castle for himself after he was the PM, but shelved it aside. Now, of course, he lived in a castle. It wasn’t his alone, of course, and he had to share a room, but it was the same.

At least with the halls empty, it felt like his. That was, until, he heard a light, sing-song voice. He turned to watch as a girl ran down the halls towards him. The clicking of her shoes against the stone broke the silence as it echoed around, not including her shouts. She was saying it was for the paper. Spellbound. It wasn’t that he was particularly found of the paper, but he did need some exposure.

The girl was gasping as she got closer, asking the question. It was something about frog legs, and the level of disgust that they brought to some students. He did think they tasted a little weird, but, not that much different than chickens. He thought he had read somewhere that they were related, but he couldn’t remember exactly. On the other hand, he didn’t want to offend French Wizards by saying that their food was bad. It would be best to be even handed.

“Well,” He said carefully, before remembering that he should give his name. It he wanted it attributed to him, he needed to have it attributed to him. “My name is Ӕthelstan. That’s with the A squished in the the E.” He considered trying to show it with his fingers, but decided against it. He wasn’t that dextrous. “And on frog legs. They do taste different, yes, then what we normally eat, but doesn’t that make it a delicacy? Of course, I sympathize with those that think it tastes gross, it’s not a taste I’ve aquired.”

That was about as even handed as he could possibly be. The girl probably had more questions for him, so he waited to see what she’d say in response.
