CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character name:
Jacob Christopher Scarborough

Previous and/or Current Character(s) if applicable:
James Knight, Alexander Valentine

Character age:
Thirty

Character education:
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - Gryffindor Class of 1937

Strength and weaknesses (details please):
Jacob likes to think he is a man of many talents. If you need something found, he can generally point you in the correct direction. Unless he feels like messing with you, in which case he may send you on a wild goose chase for his own personal amusement. His magical strengths generally lie in the field of Conjuring and Summoning, as he pursued that field of magic the most after his time spent at Hogwarts. He also tends to lean heavily on Transfiguration if he needs to alter his hair color, or to better blend into a crowd, but his skill with it is about on par with his proficiency in Charms.

His weaknesses are generally kept close to his chest, but the most obvious would probably be the fact that he can't do as much heavy lifting as he once did. While he loves flying, he avoids brooms because of the memories attached to them, but if he does get on one it generally isn't for long. In terms of magical weaknesses, Divination trails far behind all the other fields, since the man never really put much faith in the potential of what it could do for him. He was never one to like sitting still, which is an image that he always associates with that line of magic.

Physical description:
Jacob stands rather tall at 6'1" and seems to be about average weight for men his age and stature. He has broad shoulders, and is rather physically fit after maintaining his body image after the stint of years he played Quidditch.  He has dirty blonde hair, light blue eyes and a smile that could seem dazzling to some. Jacob is typically found with some degree of facial hair, but it is well groomed when he isn't clean shaven or just sporting stubble. His most prominent feature is the scar on his chest from his heart surgeries, but after almost a decade they have mostly healed to somewhat of an ugly jagged scar.

Personality (nice, rude, funny etc. Paragraph please.):
Jacob is hard to read at times since his outermost personality typically flops depending on his mood and present company. On most occasions, the man can seem to be rather sly or mischievous, but that is just because 90% of the time he is up to no good.

At other times, Jacob can actually be fairly sociable even if it is just a front for him to try and get what he wants. He has a perchance to being antagonistic, however it is rarely ever seen due to the fronts he keeps up. It typically only shined through when he wants it to or when he is in a rather bad mood. He also, on equally rare occasion, has the capacity to be genuinely nice to another human being without expecting anything in return.

Unlike some other Purebloods, Jacob has no real interest in such things as Blood Pride and he can usually be found scowling at any displays that include such behavior. However, like most Purebloods, the man is also rather prideful and when the offer of help arises from others, he is usually too hard headedly stubborn to accept it. Even if he ends up failing miserably at whatever the task is, since he has a strong dislike as being seen as helpless or weak.

This could mostly be due to all the time spent in the hospital when he was younger. Which then stems another dislike of his for of Hospitals or anything related to them. This is fairly reasonable considering his history with them, but he still forces himself to enter them when it comes to his regular check-ups.

When the question of what he actually does for a living, Jacob rarely - if ever - gives a straight answer. Mostly due to the fact that he juggles so many things, that he can never keep it straight himself. He blames it on being a wizard, but such an answer is rather pointless in the company of others like himself. He just doesn't want to nail it on the head, and get stuck with whatever he decides on.

Hopes and dreams. Why are you teaching at Hogwarts?:
Scars feels that despite the lot he was given in life, as his own potentially draws to a close, he wants to at least be able to share his knowledge with the future generations. Or at least, that is what he says to get his foot in the door. His heart complications have robbed him of most of his hopes, but the extra years he had been given allowed him to see through most of the dreams he had as a child.

Biography (500 words minimum. There is never such a thing as too much.):
Jacob Christopher Scarborough was born on October 17th, 1919 to one Vincent Scarborough and Alyssa Wolfram-Scarborough. It had been a rather easy delivery, but not one without some minor complications. Jacob had been diagnosed with a heart defect which they had been lucky enough to fix, but the doctors had wanted to see how his body would accept his new heart. They were hopeful, however, nothing was ever a guarantee even with the best Healing Magic at the time.

In his youth, Jacob had never been one to sit idle. He always had too much energy, but had been rather limited with what he was allowed to do because of his condition. One year, after his seventh birthday party, Jacob's heart had finally had too much strain on it and he had to be hospitalized after collapsing while playing with friends. His parents (His father and his step-mother, the latter whom he disliked) were told he needed another operation.

The times spent in St. Mungo's after the procedure were some of the worst Jacob had ever experienced, since he had been forbidden to do too much while he healed instead of only being fairly limited. That was practically torture for Jacob who had too much energy, since all he was allowed to do now was stay idle. They had given him books and other things to do, however, he had never seemed to be too pleased by any of it. He picked them up on occasion, but it took him months to even regain an interest in anything.

The following years in Jacob's life had taken a turn for the better. His new heart was stronger than ever and his body was reacted rather well to after the latest procedure. The best new he got, however, was the news that he would even be able to even play sports eventually. He would still need regular check-up for the next few years as his body continued to grow, but he would put up with them if he could at least be active.

Before having been accepted to Hogwarts, Jacob's first instance of magic was a hiccup that took place when he had been playing football in his neighborhood's park. The ball, as he kicked it, had caught on fire as he kicked it for a goal. This had been a Muggle park, since that was where he was living with his Father and Step-Mother at the time, and they had all been rather surprised. They had moved soon after that, even though the incident had been handled, since soon after that Jacob had received his letter to attend Hogwart's School for Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Fast forward by about a decade to when Jacob turned twenty-one for his second stay in St. Mungos. His transplanted heart had began to weaken again, and he was told that the heart he had been given was undoing an acute rejection after all this time. He pushed to have a second transplant despite the risks, since even though the risk of rejection would be higher again, he still wasn't ready to die. He figured that he had hardly been allowed to life after nine years in and out of hospitals, and seven spent at Hogwarts, so if he could carve out at least another ten years like his current heart had lasted than he would be content.

While the second transplant had been a success, the range of what Scars was capable of doing had declined. He had played Professional Quidditch for three years before his second surgery, and retired from the sport with a rather unimpressive record. After half a year spent in recovery from the surgery, Jacob took a spattering of years to travel the world before travel had been restricted from the war and he was forced to be confined to Great Britain. He spent the years during the war mostly in the shadows, traipsing through dark corridors and rubbing elbows with the shadiest characters possible. He had a few run-ins with the Ministry, but nothing ever stuck.

SAMPLE ROLEPLAY
(Please respond to to this in third person past tense. Do not write the other characters' reactions. Only your own.)

It was the largest office in Hogwarts and, perhaps to students and newcomers, the most intimidating. The shelves were filled with various odds and ends, with a place of honor for the Sorting Hat, and the walls held all the portraits of past Headmasters and Headmistresses.

In the middle of the room sat a large desk. Everything was in order, for the current occupant had always despised a messy desk. It was the sign of a messy mind, and she had always favored neatness.

A clock sat on the desk, which currently showed the time to be 2:05. The meeting was supposed to begin at 2:00 precisely.

Along with order, Anneka valued punctuality. She was a very busy woman these days. Even during the summer, she had a number of matters to attend to. Interviewing and hiring staff was only of those matters. The newest potential member of her staff wasn't making a good impression.

She paced the room, black heels clicking against the stone floor. When the door finally opened, Anneka turned, her expression reminiscent of a Russian winter. "You are late."

Explain yourself was what her face said.

Roleplay Response:
Getting around wasn't as easy as it used to be for Scars, and it was something that was slowly grating on his nerves as he retraced his steps through the winding halls of the Castle that he once called a home away from home. It was weird being back after all this time, but oddly comforting as well. Like an old blanket you pulled out in the dead of winter to keep out the chill in a room.

The sound of his footsteps rang loudly in his ears as he walked, accompanied softly by the newly present clack clack clack of the cane he leaned upon whenever he needed a moments rest. Scars hadn't had it for very long, but if he was going to need something for support from now, the stylish ebony cane was the only way he'd go.

After some initial trouble navigating the stairs towards Anneka's office, Scars eventually happened upon the door and consulted his pocket watch. He grimaced at the fact that he was late. Punctuality used to be something he shined at, unless he was late intentionally, and it seemed that he wasn't impressing anyone when he opened the door to her office. Brr.

"You are late."

The tone seemed to match her expression, but Scars greeted it with a practiced smile in place of his usual crooked one. No matter how hard he tried, however, his eyes still glinted mischievously as his response rolled off his tongue, "Headmistress, please. I'm already short on breath, no need to rob me of it entirely." Scar's mask broke as the smirk slipped through, and the man closed the door behind him as he pushed fully into the room to find a chair opposite of her desk.

"Shall we begin?" he asked as he settled his cane across his lap and schooled his features. This was bound to be an interesting afternoon.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Personality:
Jacob is hard to read at times since his outer most personality typically flops depending on his mood and present company. On most occasions, the teenager can seem to be rather sly or mischievous, but not in a way that a child is when they are younger and seeking to play tricks on others.

At other times, Jacob can actually be fairly sociable even if it is just a front for him to try and get what he wants. He has a perchance to being antagonistic, however it is rarely ever seen due to the fronts he keeps up. It typically only shined though when he wants it to or when he is in a rather bad mood. This is fairly reasonable considering his history with them, but he still forces himself to enter them when it comes to his regular check-ups.

Appearance:
Jacob is tall, but neither lanky nor lumbering. Standing at five-foot-eleven, the teenager has a fairly athletic build since he figures that one should take care of themselves even if almost everything can be handled with magic. After all, magic can't help you when you are out on the Quidditch Pitch. Or while playing Quodpot, even if it was more of a minor sport in England.

Jacob has a mop of blonde hair that normally seems disheveled, but he usually styles it to look that way or makes it look nicer on days he could be bothered to apply anything to it. His eyes are a deep blue, which he seems to have gotten from his mother, or so he is told since he has only really seen her in the occasional coloured photographs.

Other distinguishing features include a faded scar on his chest from what he claims to be a fencing accident, which is actually from a procedure he had done for his heart. Jacob also has a cross tattoo on his upper chest and various other healed scars from the time he played Quidditch in the years after the successful surgery and his recovery.

SAMPLE ROLEPLAY
Option I:

Blimey, the Great Hall was packed. It seemed like everywhere a guy looked there was some clown waving around a House banner or yelling about the game.

'Can you believe it?' 'No way!' 'This must be the biggest upset in Hogwarts Quidditch history...'

Stupid Quidditch.

James flopped into an empty seat at the end of the table, shoved an empty plate out of the way, and let his head sink onto his crossed arms, squishing his freckled nose down flat against the tabletop. He wasn't sure why he'd even bothered to come here, since he definitely wasn't hungry. He'd probably never eat again, in fact. He didn't deserve to eat. He hadn't stopped in the locker room to change out of his muddy, sweaty uniform after the game either, because he was pretty sure he probably didn't deserve to be clean too; and anyway he couldn't stand to see the looks on his team mates' faces after he blew their chance at winning one of the biggest games they had ever played.

Just one lousy shot. That's all it would have taken. If he could have just got that one stupid foul shot to go through that one stupid hoop, they could have won and he wouldn't have been the biggest blockhead in the entire school.

As if to prove the point, half the people at the next table suddenly broke into a loud victory chant. James pressed his face further into his arms to hide the bright red blotches he could feel creeping up his cheeks. That was it. He was just going to have to run away and move to Nova Scotia. He'd just cost the three-year-in-a-row Champions the Quidditch Cup! How do you ever live that one down for crying out loud? He was only a second year and he was going to spend the rest of his life as 'that dumb cry-baby kid who dropped the Quaffle!'

It felt like every set of eyes in the room was boring into him, and James couldn't stand it anymore. He jerked himself back up from the table and stomped right back out of the Hall the same way he had come in. As he stormed into the quieter hallway outside, he could hear footsteps somewhere behind him. James rounded on the sound and began to shout, his brown eyes shining with tears. "WHAT! Haven't you ever seen a loser before? Why don't you just take a picture!"

Sample Roleplay Response:
Today was one of those days where Jacob's mood had been increasingly sour. Thanks to one of his regular check-ups at St. Mungo's, the teenager had missed the chance to play in today's game. Which, he had learned upon arriving back at Hogwart's, his House had won. The Championship game and he had missed it! Out of habit, a hand reached up to touch the spot where his chest was and the boy grimaced. Talk about bad luck.

As Jacob stalked through the castle towards the Great Hall, he found himself grinding his teeth together. His father had called it a bad habit to keep, but he just couldn't break it when he was upset. He needed a way to vent, but punching something wasn't going to help. Everything around him was made of stone and if he punched anything, the teen would probably just end up back in the infirmary.

No thanks.

Right about the time he turned into the hallway the lead to where the celebrations were being held, (It was still his House, right? He'd still be able to join in on crowing out their victory even if he hadn't been in the game.) another boy appeared. Turned. Shouted. "WHAT! Haven't you ever seen a loser before? Why don't you just take a picture!"

Hello prey. Smirking inwardly, Jacob gave a halfhearted shrug. "I would," he drawled slowly, "but I seem to be lacking a camera. I can go get one if you want, but that would be to time consuming for both of us. After all," he paused to eye the colours the other boy was wearing, "I have a celebration to attend. Another time. Maybe." Jacob would let someone from Spellbound handle it if they wanted, but the older boy doubted that they would want to listen to some sob story when they could listen to the winning House's story instead.

Oh well, at least he was feeling slightly better now as he pushed past the boy and strolled into the Great Hall.

Elsewhere Accepted / Victor Scarborough, Store Owner

CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Victor Scarborough
Gender: Male
Age: Thirty-Seven

Education:
Hogwarts '53. Ravenclaw.

Community Applying To:
Diagon Alley

Do you wish to be approved as a group with any other characters? If so who and for what IC reason?
No.

Do you plan to have a connection to a particular existing place (example St Mungo's, Children's Home, the Ministry, Shrieking Shack) or to take over an existing shop in need of new management?
No.

Special Phrase: Tibbles beard of power

Biography: (300 words minimum.)
In school Victor had always been the quiet boy that would only be approached if someone else needed him for something. Help with Charms? Go see Victor. Need to find a book for Potions? Go see Victor. Need someone to write your paper for Muggles Studies? To make a cheat sheet for you? To just all around annoy? Victor. Victor. Victor.

It was only obvious what had happened next.

Victor snapped and it lead to him almost being expelled from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Thankfully he had only been landed with suspension, since it was ruled that he hadn't done anything outlandish enough to warrant expulsion. When he returned to school, however, people were slightly wary of him. So using his new found reputation of being "crazy", Victor coasted by the rest of his time at Hogwarts moderately undisturbed.

After graduation, the former Ravenclaw had attempted to work in various places to gain experience, but he had never found the right place and ended up moving all around the world. In his travels, Victor stumbled across various tomes that he holds precious to this day and decided that he'd open up a bookstore. Not any bookstore though. No. Victor opened a secondhand bookstore, since nothing is better than the smell of old tomes and the feel of the aged binding to the man. He had hoped others felt the same.

In time, Victor had finally met the woman of his dreams and eventually married her, but good things never seemed to last for the man. Five years after they had wed, Victor's beloved had passed away because of cancer. The loss of his wife had affected him greatly, causing the man to become cold and a recluse for a few years. His store had been closed down and only had reopened when he had all but finished grieving for his late wife. He is also gradually becoming less of a bitter old man and slowly allowing his heart to open again.

ROLEPLAY
Reply as your character to the following:

It was impossible for Dianne to stay out of trouble. It wasn't that she was looking for trouble, it's just that trouble always managed to find her. Today she wished she could find something equally familiar but more comforting.

The five-year old girl hugged her puffskein closer to her and brushed her face in its soft fur for comfort. She had named him herself and he was always her special pet. No she was certain she had never gone down this side street before. Her anxiety increased every second as darkness fell as she walked down the road. A loud noise came to her left and she buried her face in her pet's fur completely. The scared girl bolted the opposite way slamming the both of them into the wall of the nearest building. Tottering back a few steps she found a door a few feet to her right and ran to open it. What light there was inside spilled out into the darkness and she spilled into the room.

Once in, she was caught between the impulse to curl her cloak up more tightly around her and loosen her grip on it. She wasn't alone anymore but she was now among strangers instead, which was nearly as terrifying. Her puffskein had recovered from the shock of the wall and now was purring contentedly as the girl hugged it, causing a mildly calming effect on the girl. Gathering her courage, she marched up to the nearest person, pulled on the nearest clothing hem and blurted out in a loud voice:

"I'm lost and it's dark and I wanted to know where I am but I'm not scared but I am worried that Sambundeakin is scared because he's little and needs something to eat and wants to go home."

She paused to draw a breath in her nearly never-ending sentence, "He misses my and his mommy."

To explain the scared girl held up the custard-colored puffskein. Sambundeakin the puffskein, however simply purred as if nothing on earth was wrong in the world.

Roleplay Response:
Victor was having a less than pleasant day. His old injuries were acting up again and today people seemed fit on stepping on everything he loved. Literally. It had been that time of year again when fresh new faces would be entering Hogwarts and the last minute shoppers had flooded his shop in search of books at bargain prices. And when people looked for cheap books, what better place was there than a secondhand bookstore? Scarborough's was packed today with parents and their children, some of who didn't appreciate the appeal of old books.

"Hey! Watch where you are walking! And no running in my shop!" Victor growled when one of those aforementioned children had ran straight into a bookshelf, causing it to wobble dangerously and made a few of the tomes fall off the shelves and onto the ground. In the confusion, Victor hadn't heard the bell to his shop chime which signaled a new customer. He was going to go over to fix the books, but the intruder had caught him by hem of his coat and began to demand his attention.

It took everything he had not to growl because of annoyance, but the frightened face had stopped the sound dead in his throat. He swallowed it down and refrained from grimacing, while attempting to soften his expression instead. Her words had came out so fast that the aged man had almost missed some of them, but he had gotten the gist of it. The little girl was frightened and claimed that her pet was too, but with the way Sambundeakin the Puffskein looked, Victor assumed that she was the only one that was scared.

Victor offered her the warmest smile (Which was probably still not that great coming from him) and kneeled down slowly as not to spoke the girl. "This is a bookstore and I'm the owner, Victor," he explained in a calm tone, "How about we find you a chair to sit down in and possibly a picture book you can look at until you calm down? Then you can tell me what happened and I can help you find your mommy."

Next he had slowly extended his hand to her and waited for her to take it or not before leading her to find a chair to sit in. He would gesture for one of his employees to assist in helping look over the shop, but the frightened little girl took priority.

SHOPKEEPER QUESTIONS
Answer these questions only if you are applying to be a shopkeeper as well.

Shop name: Scarborough's Secondhand Books.
Shop Description (200 words minimum):
Scarborough's Secondhand Books is located on the corner of Diagon Alley. It looks to be a small shop from the outside, but actually feels bigger on the inside. This is because of how far back it stretches and, of course, a little magic.

The shop is made of stone on the outside, while the inside is more of wood paneling and carpeted floors with a large wooden door that leads to the shop, while both letters printed on the glass of his shop and a small double sided sign above the door (Hanging so that you can see it while you walk down the street) displays the name of his shop. A bell greets you when you enter and allows the man and his employees know of your entrance.

There are low rows of shelves stacked with books of all kinds, but majority of them are older books that have already been owned; Either by Victor himself, purchased from other stores or donated to the store over the time he has run the shop. Victor does stock newer books of course, but not very many. Mainly since he finds the appeal of older, more weathered and aged books to be more appealing.

In the front end of the shop is where most of the store's activity can be seen. Victor has small groupings of furniture for customers to lounge in if they so wish it, but he frowns on people lingering too long since other customers might wish to do so as well. This part of the store is usually more well lit than the rest, since it is easier on the patron's eyes to read in better lighting.

What purpose will this shop serve other than selling things and being the home of your character? Why would people want to RP there just for fun?
As mentioned, it would probably be a good place for students and adults alike to visit if they have a love for books and felt like browsing or even reading in peace. The chairs in the front of the store offer a relaxing and comfortable place to sit without too much pressure from Victor to either buy something or get kicked out. It would also be a nice change of pace for busy shoppers to come in and unwind for a bit, however, food and drinks would not be allowed unless they wanted a grumpy old man breathing down their necks.
