Elsewhere Accepted / Re: Dubhlainn Emmet
« on: 31/07/2017 at 00:39 »
Hey there, Dubhlainn!

Your application is off to a great start, and he definitely sounds like an interesting character! I noticed, however, that his biography is a little short. For an adult Elsewhere character, your biography should be atleast 300 words long. Maybe you could talk about Dub’s life growing up in America, or how attending Ilvermorny was, or what made him want to move back to Europe as an adult? Or seeing as Dub is taking care of her children now, maybe you could go into a bit more detail about his sister-- ie what her name is, and what his relationship with her was like? Does he know if she hated being a squib, or resented that Dub could do magic? Or did she like that he could, and didn’t mind that she couldn’t?

You also mention that Dub’s sister was murdered. I’d be interested in knowing more about this important event, such as how his family was affected by her death, or what led up to it. Just please keep in mind the site rating, and do not detail the death itself.

Also, you mention that in the past he had been a professor at Hogwarts, but you do not mention exactly how long ago or what subject? Please keep in mind that we have players who are/were cannonly professors in this timeline, so there might be some issues here. Please contact me if you have any questions about this detail.

Once you've made those additions and changes, please repost your entire revised application below and we'll be happy to take another look. Thanks!

Hey there Newt!

This is looking really good so far! I just have a couple things I would like to touch base on before we accept him! Mostly I was just hoping I could hear a bit more in Newt's biography-- it really helps the sorting hat decide where your character gets placed.

For instance, when you say Newt's sister isn't the nicest to him, why is that? What does she do (or not do) that makes Newt think that about her? You also say that Newt thinks that his mom and dad like him better than her-- what do they do to show that? Do they buy him more things? Do they not punish him for things that Kaya would if she had done them? Do they praise him more? There is also a bit about Newt being terrified being placed in Slytherin-- why does Newt think he's different than the rest of his family?

Once you've made the changes, please reply below with the entire revised application and we will be happy to take another look! Thanks!

A NOTE
The admin have given their blessing on our little family and are working out a system to help us and them keep the extra work involved to a minimum.

Quote
We're happy to pre-approve high Div levels within reason (Div level not to exceed 14, total levels not to exceed 36) for the first Litchfield alt of any player. This can be noted in the character application as approved and will not require anything further; it'll be on-file as pre-approved with site staff.

So only one Litchfield that you create can have high Div levels, as stated above, and you do not have to put in a special request for it, just note it in the character app. Any other Litchfield you create after that character will have to have normal Div levels.

Also, it has been noted that no further additional special requests (e.g., lycanthropy, legilimency, Seer, etc.) for Litchfield characters will be approved until a term's worth of activity has been demonstrated with the character/family to make sure that they'll be played actively.

Quote
Also, just as a reminder, no one family has a monopoly on special abilities, and it would be highly unrealistic for every member of a single family to manifest a power beyond the affinity for Divination. In a lot of cases, the abilities people are requesting are actually things that can be covered by the abilities granted for regular Divination levels under the magical rules. It just requires a little creativity. If you're not sure of how to do this for the abilities that you want or if you have any questions, feel free to shoot one of us a PM and we'll figure it out together.

LITCHFIELD PLACE
Owned now by Lincoln's parents, Grogan and Dahlia Litchfield, Litchfield Place is center for any family gatherings and holiday festivities for the entire clan. Whether they still live there or not, Grogan and Dahlia's children all have rooms here still, and Grogan's parents stay with them in the home as well. No one else lives here. Extended family are welcome to spend a few days at the manor, especially on holidays, but no longer.

New: Open to resistance members; harboring or hosting meetings.

Looks like: Lanhydrock House

Option Two -
The snow had been falling steadily all morning and it didn't look like it was going to stop any time soon. Joshua Campbell scrunched his face up in a frown as he lifted his gaze to look to the sky. Snow. It really was quite a bother.

And it certainly didn't make it better that Diagon Alley seemed to be getting more and more crowded. Joshua sighed and pointed his wand at the large box that was currently placed on the doorstep of his shop. He had to get going. He had an order to deliver.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" The elderly man muttered and watched the box hover in the air for a moment. Honestly, did St. Mungo's really need that much tinsel? And with glitter of all things? He sighed again. If it hadn't been for the rather convincing stamp on the order, he would have been likely to believe it had been a prank by one of those orphaned rascals living up there.

Oh well, there was no point in waiting. Joshua deftly stirred the box down the doorstep and out onto the street, carefully levitating it above the heads of the crowd.

"Coming through! Coming through!" His voice sounded over the chatter of the crowd. "Keep out! Move ahead! Go on!" This was going way too slow. People were in the way and walking like they had all day! He huffed. Luckily the road was down hill.

"Coming through! Coming th--- arrrgh!" Joshua let out a loud shout as his feet suddenly slipped in the snow and sent him, the box, and several long strands of tinsel tumbling into the person who had been walking in front of him.

"For Merlin's sake!" Joshua muttered angrily as he hurried to his feet again, red and gold tinsel now decorating his black coat. "I am so sorry! This blasted snow!" He looked apologetic at the person he had crashed into.

Roleplay Response:
He’d left work early to go on a simple mission—find Daliah a Christmas present.

It sounded easier than it was. After thirty-three years of marriage, one would have thought he’d have had it down by now, but he’d always been a terrible gift giver. Once he’d bought her the same present three years in a row without realizing it. Each time she had smiled brightly and thanked him, and he wouldn’t have even known if he hadn’t stumbled upon the triplet necklaces in her jewelry armoire one afternoon.

He made a promise this years gift would be much, much better, and so he decided to get on it a little earlier in the month.

"Coming through!

He felt the fluster of harried emotions moving in close, swooping up behind him, and then suddenly—

”Coming th--- arrrgh!"

Grogan stopped mid-step, blinking in surprise as a box slid past his feet and a large boa of tinsel draped over his hat and blocked his vision. He turned to the man who was apologizing franticly, but he waved a gloved hand dismissively and chuckled, “It’s quite alright.”

Plucking the tinsel from his head, he bent down to gather the rest and stuff it back into the rouge box, “Have somewhere to be, I take it?”

How did you find us? 'Where can I find a super wicked HP RP site?!' I screamed to the heavens, waving my fists in the air. Long I had been searching, but to no avail. Suddenly, clouds parted and light shone down brightly upon me. A chorus of angels started up song, and among them, a single voice neither masculine nor feminine spoke one word, 'Hoggies.

CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character name: Lincoln Litchfield

Previous and/or Current Character(s) if applicable: Eugene Bryce, Able Lewis Sorley, Lincoln Litchfield

Character age: 31

Character education: Hogwarts graduate, Gryffindor

Strength and weaknesses (details please):
In many ways Lincoln embodies the Gryffindor stereotype – daring, nerve, boldness, chivalrous, extreme loyalty.

And they of course have their downside – too much daring, nerve, and boldness can lead to brash decisions, accidents, and hurt feelings. Extreme loyalty on one side can leave you blind to the other...

Lincoln is a well read young man, and as a student the top of his class. As an adult, his life is his Ministry job, and slacking off is simply not in his vocabulary. Work keeps him busy, which he likes, but it takes away free time to work on himself and as a result he has very little social interaction.

While he generally radiates with confidence in the things that he does, he doesn’t have confidence in who he is as a person. It was a push from some family that started this crazy idea of sorting books, with the hope that a wife, or at least a friend, might come from it.

Physical description:
Though the families power of divination had skipped him, the unblemished dark chestnut skin,  broad, intimidating stance and a pinpoint stare that seems to see through to the very soul, mark him as a Litchfield. Lincoln stands just above average height, at six foot, not the tallest in the family but taller than most, with a build proudly sculpted from playing Quidditch Keeper during his years at Hogwarts and with his siblings during summer.

He keeps his hair cropped short, close to his skull, to keep the tightknit curls from springing to an unruly fro.  His hazel eyes are far-sighted, so he keeps a pair of well used thick rimmed glasses in the pocket of his coat in order to read. As far as clothes go, Lincoln likes to keep things dressy. Suits, sport coats, dress shirts, ties and fedoras frequent his wardrobe in a variety of patterns and colors; he isn’t shy about mixing and matching.

Personality (nice, rude, funny etc. Paragraph please.):
Lincoln is a friendly chap, good at empathizing with others (though he’s not a gifted empath like his father, he seems to have taken on some of his traits), and always finds some way to help someone or cheer them up. He is efficient and charismatic in all aspects of his life – his job at the Department of Mysteries, dealing with his friends and family, helping someone he doesn’t know, looking for something that might be lost, doing the dishes… – except when it comes to his love life. He keeps himself busy to avoid ever having one.

Hopes and dreams. Why are you teaching at Hogwarts?:
Always looking for new opportunities and experiences, Linc heard about the faculty openings from his good friend, Robert Oliveroot. Being curious, he looked into what was open, and thought he could help out with the librarian position. He loves Hogwarts and misses its beautiful halls and the freedom being there gave him.

He spent so much time in the library as a student, working diligently on his papers and assignments, looking for books to read in his spare time… He made his way to the top of his class because of the library, it now only seems fitting to return the favor and help patrol the isles, return the books to their shelves, and help other students find the right books they need.

Biography (500 words minimum. There is never such a thing as too much.):
The Litchfield family predates the name, but there is pride in age, and no one can deny the Litchfield’s their legacy. Lines traced and ancestors linked, the Litchfield family can successfully be placed to ancient tribes deep within the forests of what is now Brazil. A line of seers; of those who foretold events to come and sought guidance from those long since passed. Renown for skills through their small tribes, it wasn’t until the first Wizard approached, did the family learn their skill was still in need of harnessing.

The Fortsauve School of Magic of Brazil was where the Litchfield’s began their schooling, but it would not be where they ended it. With knowledge always came aspiration, a desire to expand beyond what had been told. It was with this craving that the first Litchfield was born. William Litchfield, a name given when he first made the move to Britain. He entered the world in both a difficult and prosperous time. The Goblin rebellions gave the chance to make a name for an unknown man. Prophesies and premonitions, William’s assistance lead to victories, and his name was no longer unknown.   Years passed, and the Litchfield’s became a line of wizard’s synonymous with high skills in divination.

Witches and Wizards attended Hogwarts, and the desire to keep their line pure began just as the Ministry of Magic came to be. the care for pureblood was strongly ingrained, their roots of a desire of knowledge and strength have seen children primarily as Gryffindors, and occasionally Ravenclaws. Always gifted with sight. Whether they practiced astrology, crystal-gazing, dream interpretation, or tessomancy, the Litchfields were known for their accuracy, easily gaining employment at the Ministry.

The years passed, tradition became something unbroken. At least, in most cases.

Lincoln was the exception. Lincoln never had a vision about the past, present, or future. He couldn’t find the meaning in dreams, and he certainly couldn’t read the soggy language the tea leaves spelt out inside his cups. His parents, Dahlia and Grogan Litchfield weren’t put off by his inability to See, simply stating that one day it would come to him. They had faith in their blood, and they knew from ancestors stories that the ability came when it was needed most.

Not to mention that they had four other boys after him who could all had great sight, and were destine to have their own children with the same, Litchfield abilities.

When his time at Hogwarts came, Lincoln was relived to find that when the old hat sat on top of his head, it barely took a second to yell out Gryffindor. He had been worried since he had learned about the school that he would disappoint his parents by being the only sightless Litchfield in Hufflepuff. He continued to prove himself, making up for his inability to See by being in the top of his classes – accept for Divination, but with his knowledge of the subject from his family, he skimmed through it fine. Charms was a subject he particularly excelled in and enjoyed. He happened to be one hell of a Keeper for the Gryffindor Quidditch team, as well, an honor that not many of his family possessed.

After Hogwarts, he knew exactly what he wanted to do. He wanted to work along side his father, wanted to work in the Ministry of Magic. Lincoln’s father was an Unspeakable, as had his father’s brother and their father, working in the Department of Mysteries to keep most ancient prophesies protected.  The Litchfields were a well-known name in the Ministry, so when Lincoln applied for a small desk job after Hogwarts, it wasn’t long before he was in.  He started small, working hard and making himself known (and with such a name and heritage at his back), it took only a few years until he was offered a job as an Unspeakable.

SAMPLE ROLEPLAY
(Please respond to to this in third person past tense. Do not write the other characters' reactions. Only your own.)

The water by the lakeshore rippled, dark under the overcast sky, and thick with moss growth. Ripples grew into small waves, spreading in concentric circles that sloshed against the rocks and sent a small family of mice living in a rotted out log above the waterline scurrying for cover.

And then the lake exploded.

A fountain erupted, splattering muddy water and assorted bits of lake bottom. Something very, very large thrashed and roiled, tentacles slapping wildly at the surface.

Elizabeth despised the squid, and more importantly, she disapproved of it. It was disorderly. Truth be told, she was the sort of woman who disapproved of a great many things, the disorderly ones most particularly. A tall, severe woman in her forties who never smiled, Elizabeth was so parsimonious with praise that it was said that if good will could be saved up she'd be sitting on a pile of it like dragon over a horde. The school's Headmistress was very good at disapproval.

Brown water flowed in a tent around her upraised wand, blocked by an invisible umbrella.

“He has a cold again!” Pythagorea Proud, the school’s much-harried Deputy Headmistress fussed, as she shook a spatter of mud off of her arm. She hadn’t been as quick with her wand work. “He won’t take his medicine. We’ve been trying all morning. Someone is going to have to deal with him!”

Arms folded, the tip of Elizabeth’s pointed black and very sensible shoe tapped against the rocky bank. She glanced over at their newest Professor, her expression thoughtful. “You’ll do,” she offered flatly, her tone leaving little room for argument. This was going to prove to be a very different sort of interview...

Roleplay Response:

A thick rain of water and lake sludge fell down upon him,  drenching him to the bone. He hadn’t been ready for it, unlike Elizabeth with her magical umbrella. He stood a sopping mess, and now his nice dress clothes we’re uncomfortably wet.

“You’ll do.”

Lincoln raised an eyebrow. Him? Deal with the squid?  If Lincoln had anything to say about it, Robert probably would have been a much better choice, being the Magical Creatures teacher and all. The way he had dealt with the Erumpent the first day they had met at the Ministry last year had been impressive.

But as it were, he had been the one chosen.

“Right.” Lincoln huffed, dropping his ruined sport coat at his feet and rolling the sleeves of his white dress shirt up. It clung to him uncomfortably, and was very much see-through at this point. What a way to make an impression.

As the tentacles slapped the surface wildly, Linc moved towards them without hesitation until one slapped down next to him, sending a spray of muddy water over his legs.  Days of his youth reminded him of dealing with this very same squid, though it seemed to have gotten bigger over the year.

He reached out and ran his rough hands over the slippery skin like he’d might pet his dog. When he had been in Hogwarts, he and his friends would always do this when the squid surfaced. The squid would shiver and wiggle in a way one might describe ‘laughing’, tentacles curl up on the surface before it retreated back into the depths. He hoped it still held true.

At the very least, it hadn’t yet smacked him away. Lincoln smiled slightly at the thought as he turned back to Elizabeth.

“Will this do?”

Lincoln is the only one born into the family without some form of divination power. The powers and strengths vary from person to person, and some find different branches of Divination work better for them than others. A very warm, tight-knit family, secrets aren't kept very well amongst them; some one will know and they will gossip. Whether they outright reveal the knowledge or vaguely drop hints about what it is about, is up to them to decide based on what the vision is about.

The main line includes Grogan Litchfield as the head of the family, with his wife Dahlia, and their 6 children. Grogan's father (the elder Litchfield) and mother live with them. Recently, they are helpers to the Resistance against the Hexenreich, offering money and sanctuary in their home, and a good portion of the children are part of the group.

Biography: (300 words minimum.)
Able was a nosey person. He’d worm his way into any situation he could, always wanting to know what was going on, regardless of the consequences. His parents heaved a sigh of relief when he was finally on his way to Hogwarts; not that they didn’t love their little boy, they just… needed a break every once and a while. And Able didn’t mind, Hogwarts meant learning new things and meeting new people, and a wide variety of new dirt to dig up. It was no surprise to those who knew him to find out he was sorted into Slytherin – even as a child, he was ambitious, clever, self confident, and resourceful.

He wasn’t the best in his class, always the student that got all his work done but at average quality. However, if someone wanted to get back at a bully, or blackmail some halfwit, Able was the kid you went to. He made a small business of it: a few knuts for something embarrassing, a couple sickles for some real good blackmail, and if you forked up some galleons it could get you some spying with pictures.

Annoying and immature, sure, but no one could doubt that the guy had skills. It was this ability to gather information that spurred him to take a job at the Daily Prophet.

Jim hated Mondays.

He had always hated Mondays, really; that cursed beginning of the week, that day where it still should have been the weekend and yet there was work to be done - deadlines to be made - stupid lunch meetings to attend.  Even when ‘lunch meetings’ had been just plain lunch; ‘work’, homework, he had despised the start of classes and - all at once - the next five un-fun days before the weekend started up again.

Now, cloudy October morning, Jim hated Mondays more than ever.

His desk filled with the wide-open arms of the Sunday Prophet, he scribbled furiously over sections with a bright red ink.

All the new graduates with their impeccable NEWTs and superb teacher recommendations had come in last month, only too eager to start preaching the truth - their truth - to the whole of Wizarding Britain.

Jim’s train of thought was bitter, but he smiled wanly, for he had once been one of those recruits themselves.

Most of their dreams should have been been smashed in the first week, from the first time people like Jim had told them to fetch the group some coffee. Day after day, hour after hour, that was what they now said to their youngest colleagues, as their older counterparts had told him years before: At some point everyone has to fetch us our drinks.

Almost every year, the new recruits sat down and took it - and fetched the group some coffee - and maybe it was just the age or the nostalgia, but Jim was fairly certain that they deserved it all.

They did not deserve to publish half-coherent drafts with way too many adverbs and completely unmodulated opinions.

Jim threw down the quill in disgust, ink splattering onto his button-down shirt as though it were blood.

Smartly, he piled up bits of paper, and then, still angry, face marred by an unhappy Monday, deposited the pile in front of his door before reaching out to grab at the first person he saw.

What happened to this paper?”

Roleplay Response:
“Excuse me?” replied Able through a mouth full of sandwich. He swallowed hard and coughed, pulling his nice button down out of the man’s hand before frowning down at his lunch that now decorated the gaudy carpet beneath them.

That had been the only thing he had had to eat so far.

With a deep sigh Able looked up at Jim and adjusted the glasses that had slipped down his straight nose, “Look, I’m just a photographer,” he rattled the large camera around his neck for emphasis, “Do I look like I bloody well know? Find yourself a columnist, mate.”

Yes – The Ministry’s Department of Mysteries. The Litchfield's have a family history of working at the DoM due to their usually high divination skills. Biography: (300 words minimum.)

Witches and Wizards attended Hogwarts, and the desire to keep their line pure began just as the Ministry of Magic came to be.Tthe care for pureblood was strongly ingrained, their roots of a desire of knowledge and strength have seen children primarily as Gryffindors, and occasionally Ravenclaws.

Roleplay: (If you are requesting Exceptional levels - above 32 total - please respond to the roleplay and questions here instead)
Reply as your character to the following:

It was impossible for Dianne to stay out of trouble. It wasn't that she was looking for trouble, it's just that trouble always managed to find her. Today she wished she could find something equally familiar but more comforting.

The five-year old girl hugged her puffskein closer to her and brushed her face in its soft fur for comfort. She had named him herself and he was always her special pet. No she was certain she had never gone down this side street before. Her anxiety increased every second as darkness fell as she walked down the road. A loud noise came to her left and she buried her face in her pet's fur completely. The scared girl bolted the opposite way slamming the both of them into the wall of the nearest building. Tottering back a few steps she found a door a few feet to her right and ran to open it. What light there was inside spilled out into the darkness and she spilled into the room.

Once in, she was caught between the impulse to curl her cloak up more tightly around her and loosen her grip on it. She wasn't alone anymore but she was now among strangers instead, which was nearly as terrifying. Her puffskein had recovered from the shock of the wall and now was purring contentedly as the girl hugged it, causing a mildly calming effect on the girl. Gathering her courage, she marched up to the nearest person, pulled on the nearest clothing hem and blurted out in a loud voice:

"I'm lost and it's dark and I wanted to know where I am but I'm not scared but I am worried that Sambundeakin is scared because he's little and needs something to eat and wants to go home."

She paused to draw a breath in her nearly never-ending sentence, "He misses my and his mommy."

To explain the scared girl held up the custard-colored puffskein. Sambundeakin the puffskein, however simply purred as if nothing on earth was wrong in the world.

Roleplay Response:
Lincoln blinked at the sudden interruption, at the loud, squeaky voice that seemed to carry throughout the room. Conversations felt like they hushed as they stared down the little patch of sunshine that had broken through their cloudy barrier and started spewing out nonsense. Linc looked away from her quickly, back at the man he had been speaking to, only to find that he had gone. Damn.

It was as if the only sound in the small bar was from the fire crackling in the fire place, throwing shadows over the patrons face’s and the wooden floors, stone walls. No one seemed to be in a hurry to help the girl and he sighed. She had picked him, she was his problem now. Not that he didn’t like kids, he was used to them, having been the oldest of five rowdy boys.

“Little lamb, you’ve picked the wrong cave to look for help in. Be nothin’ but bats in here.” he sighed after crouching over her, hurrying her to the door she had barged through, closing it behind them. His business was done there anyway, he supposed. “Let’s go find that careless mum of yours, eh?”
