Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Marietta Clementine Greeley

Birthday: April 4th, 1940

Hometown: London (the country estate near Horncastle having been sold quite sometime before Etta’s existence.)

Bloodline:  Muggleborn

Magical Strength (pick one): Transfiguration

Magical Weakness (pick one): Conjuring & Summoning

Year (pick two): 1st (or 2nd)

Biography:

It was a truth universally acknowledged that this generation muggle gentry was faced with a loss of position in the social and economic sphere. Some accepted this with grace, while others sold what remained to highest bidder. Unfortunately this did not stop Etta from receiving a ladies’ education to her everlasting delight.

She who was born early one misty April day, merely seven months after wedding bells had rung for Margery, a genteel only child of a baron, and Fletcher, a mature industrial tycoon. Fletcher never went overseas being just past the expiration date for a good British soldier. Instead he stayed home and turned his factories to the task of supporting the war effort. And Lady Margery aimed to help by replenishing the population.

Roughly every two years the Greeleys seemed to add to their growing family. Etta’s first sibling, Alban, was the much-needed heir to the title and only 18 months younger than Etta herself. After Alban, there was Perpetua, Ariadne, Francis, and Lillian. It was, perhaps, a bit coarse for the peerage to be constantly at home and pregnant instead of socializing. And perhaps a bit insensitive given how many husbands were away and never coming back. But Fletcher Greeley saw his constantly growing family as proof of the virility and strength of his line - the line that was now rich and titled.

Now, out of the six siblings, it did often appear that Etta was the odd one out. Funny happenings seemed to occur in her presence but only the nurses and governess appeared to notice. Thus her Hogwarts letter was a bit of an astonishment to Etta’s parents. It is both surprising and expected how quickly they accepted this new revelation and released Etta to Hogwart’s care. It can be supposed that when there are six children in the house, it is very little loss to send one away.

It would, however, be a relief when no letters appeared for her younger siblings.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

House Request: No request.

Personality: As the oldest, Etta has always felt the pressure to conform and set a good example - especially as she so often fails at this task. She’s bright and lively with a curiosity that leaves her seeking trouble when left untended. Thus Etta was rarely left untended. Nurses, governesses, and even on occasion her parents and grandparents, all stepped in to impress upon Etta the need for please, thank you, and above all - staying quiet!

Appearance: If one looks close enough, there’s a resemblance between Etta and her mother, Lady Margery. It’s in the cheekbones. Or was it the jaw? She will never be a classic peaches and cream British beauty but Etta still has a fair skin tone that lends itself well to sunburns. She differs, however, with brunette hair and brown eyes. In this respect Etta stands in stark contrast to the blue eyes that grace most of her relatives.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.

Etta loved the freedom of Hogwarts. She loved making her own decisions. She loved making her own friends. She loved brushing her teeth only when she wanted. And today she loved running pell mell through the gardens for the sheer delight of being active.

Though apparently she wasn’t the only one. First there was stomping, then there was grumbling, and then the flowers seemed to shake themselves apart. And all this before the biggest sneeze that Etta had possibly ever heard. In fact, despite having already garnered her attention, Hugh still managed to startle her with his impressive sinus acrobatics. Etta was going to slowly back away (that’s what you’re supposed to do with rabid creatures - escape before they even notice you), but Merlin the Rat was apparently not an interesting enough subject.

She’d been spotted.

"Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare," Hugh said in a thick, mucus-y voice that gave Etta the bad kind of shivers.

Think before you speak. Think before you speak! Etta must always think before-

“Your face looks funny.” So much for that. Still, she could do something nice. Etta dug through her pockets and brandished a (probably) clean handkerchief. “This is softer than your sleeve.”

Biography:

Daughters of Barons always use honorifics. Granddaughters are sometimes exempt. Unless, of course, your mother is the sole heir and will pass the title to your brother.

Then you’re pretty much expected to act like a lady. Whether or not the title applies.

Such was the case for Etta, who was born early one misty April day. Not just early in the morning, but also early in the marriage. This was merely seven months after wedding bells had rung for Margery, a genteel sort of girl, and Fletcher, a mature industrial tycoon. Such a miracle that a premature infant could survive! How blessed those newlyweds must have been. She brought panache and grace, he brought money - and now there was a tiny angel to bask in it all.
Fletcher never went overseas, being just past the expiration date for a good British soldier. Instead he stayed home and turned his factories to the task of support the war effort. And Lady Margery aimed to help by replenishing the population. Every 2 years or so, the Greeleys seemed to add to their growing family. It can be supposed that when there are six children in the house, it is very little loss to send one away.

It was, however, a relief when no letters appeared for her younger siblings.

At school Etta found that things were quite different. There was no adult guiding her through a day. She could eat as much toast as she wanted! Or as little porridge. She went whole weeks without being forced to curtsy, and most of the way to Christmas without the disapproving looks Father often wore. Hogwarts was a sort of heaven.

Etta settled in and learned that even without supervision, it was still important to brush your hair every morning, and bathe regularly. She came to understand the true consequences of eating no dinner and too much dessert. And Etta even began to value the importance of manners and polite behavior beyond being “the right thing”. It turns out that friends tend to become scarce if you speak your mind too often or too freely without forethought. It’s unfortunate that some lessons had to be learned the hard way.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: No request.

Personality: Etta is a contentious mix of nature versus nurture. She’s bright and lively, often speaking and acting faster than her brain can process. Left untended, she devolves into a brash and reactive teenager. However, due to her upper class muggle childhood, Etta was rarely left untended. Nurses, governesses, and even on occasion her parents and grandparents, all stepped in to impress upon Etta the need for please, thank you, and above all - staying quiet! At least when the adults could see you. So on a bad day, Etta might comment on how awful a friend looks before asking why they didn’t sleep well. On a better day, she might bite her tongue and remember to be polite. Perhaps she could offer a nice cup of tea to wake them up instead!

Appearance: If one looks close enough, there’s a resemblance between Etta and her mother, Lady Margery. She will never be a classic peaches and cream British beauty but Etta still has a fair skin tone that lends itself well to sunburns and freckles. She differs, however, with brunette hair and brown eyes. In this respect, Etta stands in stark contrast to the blue eyes that grace most of her relatives.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.

Several years into her Hogwarts career, Etta still found a simple joy from being in the gardens. As a first year, she had run pell mell through them for the sheer delight of being active. By third year, they were a wonderful place to pluck flowers and search for truth in the petals: he loves me, he loves me not. Now it was simply habit the wander out on a sunny day.

Of course, usually the gardens were a little bit quieter.

“It’s not usually polite to begin tornados in gardens, either, but I see that hasn’t stopped you.” So much for that. At this point, damage control might be limited. Etta dug through her pockets and brandished a (probably) clean handkerchief. “It’s also considered uncouth to use your clothing in such a way. Maybe this will help.”

Alright. So that wasn’t terrible. Maybe wisdom could come with age!

“Your face looks funny, by the way. Are you sure you’re alright?”

Or not.
