Elsewhere Accepted / The Moulin Rouge | Shop Permit

SHOPKEEPER PERMIT
You must have applied as an Elsewhere character before completing this permit.

Shop name: The Moulin Rouge
Shop Type: Gentleman’s Club/Nightclub/Bar/Criminal hangout etc.
Location: Knockturn Alley
Subforum? Yes please! (Will purchase asap if accepted.)

Short Description (50 words max): A seemingly classy establishment with wicked secrets, hard liquor and beautiful women.
Long Description (200 words min): The Moulin Rouge was established in 1901 after a corrupt business man by the name of Armand Mathieu Gautier immigrated from Paris, France in an attempt to escape prosecution for fraud and money laundering. Upon arrival he bought out a dying club in Knockturn Alley using the money he had illegally obtained and promptly renamed it ‘The Moulin Rouge’ after the popular club and cabaret show in the French capital, however he had entirely different intentions for his new business.

After several months of renovations and completely redecorating the impressively architectured building as well as making less than appropriate connections with the locally corrupt (some of which being prestigious public figures) on the way, he opened the club in the early autumn as a nightclub specifically catering to the likes of Halfblood and Pureblood men (though of course, Muggleborns may lie their way in) whilst having transformed it into a seemingly classy establishment with expensive furniture and decoration.

Upon entering the club you come to a medium sized entrance hall where two large security guards man the double doors that lead to the main floor and to enter you must pay a small free. The main floor consists of a bar with an extensive collection of alcohol (both modern and vintage), an array of fine leather armchairs and tables as well as private alcoves that can be reserved and rented out. The floors are dark oak wood and the club’s colour palette consists of dark shades, mostly reds, browns, golds and blacks. Towards the back of the spacious area is another set of double doors which are also manned by security and lead to a far posher and more extravagant area, reserved for the elite and private members of the club. Those who are private members sport a small pin of a crimson red windmill, lined with solid gold.

The only women permitted in the club are those who work there and many of which also live at the club on the residential floors above. Each of the girls have been sold to the club by Henrik Carlisle Duke, a prestigious politician and aristocrat who very secretly leads a dark life. The girls who live there share a room with one another apart from a select five who are not only the boss’ favourites but customer favourites also, meaning they get much more freedom since somewhere along the way they paid their way out of Henrik’s possession thanks to the private services they also personally offer the club’s attendees. One of these five girls is not only a mother figure to the rest but keeps everything in order and handles their finances.

In summary, The Moulin Rouge is a popular social hangout for the wizards of Great Britain and a place they can indulge in sin, including gambling and extensive alcohol intake. Many criminals frequent here as well as those of high social status, each circulating a different area of a club without ever having to acknowledge one another due to its great size. The dress code is smart/formal and those who do not attend are ignorant to its true nature.

What purpose will this shop serve other than selling things and being the home of your character? Why would people want to RP there just for fun? I am hoping it could possibly tie into the NPC Villains plot by giving those who indulge in criminal activity a place to frequent, in turn giving the authorities a place to raid in attempt of finding someone or something. Characters can also work there and potentially live there. Also, due to it mostly being a Gentleman’s Club, it could hopefully encourage players to make male characters as the female to male ratio has always been high. There are also unique situations characters can be thrown into that perhaps they may not have experienced before.

Biography: (300 words minimum.)
Having been left on the doorstep of an orphanage in the medieval Polish town of Malbork with nothing but a blanket and a worn teddy bear, little Magdalena was never destined to amount to much. No note was found with her, meaning there is no trace of where or who she came from and upon being taken in by the elderly couple that ran the orphanage, she was named after Mary Magdalene, a significant figure within the Christian faith.

Despite being so young, she was one of the few infants that were never adopted. Instead she was raised at the orphanage, constantly having to say hello and goodbye to those who pretended to be her brothers and sisters and watched them be taken away to play happy families from the dirty windows of what she had to call home. The older she got, the less she was considered by parents looking to add an addition to their families which only increased the desire within her to belong, as despite constantly being surrounded by other children, they quickly grew wary of her due to the early signs of magic she showed.

She was a tough kid, having grown a thick skin due to her strict upbringing and the horrid children that teased her over the fact she didn’t seem to be wanted. Then there were the few confrontations over little things she could do that didn’t make sense, which occurred not only at ‘home’ but at school where she didn’t particularly excel and instead spent most of her time reading about a better life within the pages of children’s books. Magdalena didn’t have an explanation for the glasses that shattered when she was angry or the flowers that wilted when she was sad, just as much confusion and horror that was displayed by the rest of the orphans.

On May 21st, 1931 -- her 11th birthday -- Magdalena received a letter from the Polish Institute of Sorcery. She hid it immediately to ensure not only its safety but her own and the night before she was due at the school she packed what little belongings she had in a torn rucksack, excited by the possibility of finally being able to belong somewhere. When everybody had fallen asleep, she wrote a quick goodbye on a handkerchief and crawled out of her bedroom window, then proceeding towards the portkey that had been left for her in the woods nearby that took her to a train station in Warsaw.

Life at the school was peculiar to say the least. The train in Warsaw took her through the Polish countryside and eventually arrived in a magical town only a carriage ride away from the large manor house she would be studying at. Thankfully, due to circumstances, her uniform was gifted to her upon arrival as well as all the equipment she needed, in turn making her look as much of a legitimate witch as everyone else. At the beginning, she felt a little out of her depth due to her lack of knowledge about everything and it showed through her timidness and hesitation to ask questions in case she made her lack of magical heritage any more obvious than it was. Unluckily for little Magdalena, this was only the start of her problems.

Eventually, she found herself lying to the people around her about her background and the fact she was a Muggleborn. All she had ever wanted was to fit in properly and find people that could potentially care for her and The Polish Institute gave her that opportunity. Considering nobody knew her or anything about her, she decided to make up a life of her own to tell to others and wrote it all down in a secret diary, including the names of parents and siblings that didn’t really exist and details about a beautiful townhouse she grew up in. Nobody ever caught on to these lies which allowed her to blossom as a person, but it also only increased her insecurities that stayed locked up within whilst she made a name for herself.

In 1936 at the age of sixteen, she received a letter stating the death of the elderly man who had cared for her at the orphanage. She promptly dropped out of school with no explanation and returned to Malbork, still feeling a sense of loyalty towards her childhood home despite it being a miserable one. For two years she helped her ‘mother’ with the housework and the care of children who came and left as quick as the seasons, however in 1938 the woman also passed and rumours of war had begun to circulate. Once again, Magdalena found herself on the move and on her way towards London, England where she believed it would be safest.

Upon arrival she managed to find and rent a filthy little bedsit on the outskirts of the city that would make do whilst she attempted to get a job, anything that would help her survive the winter. Despite having next to no qualifications, her practical skills became of great use to her and she was eventually hired as a seamstress for an arrogant heir in the city. Unfortunately however, this wasn’t enough as she still struggled to pay the rent, afford food and take care of her appearance which was required to be impeccable at all times whilst at work which often resulting in her shoplifting to keep herself afloat.

One day in early 1939, she was caught attempting to steal several apples from a stall in Diagon Alley, very almost getting her arrested if not for a total stranger stepping into help her. His only want in return for his generosity was for her to work for him -- an offer she couldn’t refuse. He took her to Knockturn Alley, proceeding towards a seemingly classy establishment by the name of The Moulin Rouge where he introduced her to the boss as ‘one of his new girls’. Oblivious to what was truly happening due to the relief of escaping handcuffs, Magdalena soon found herself living in a room at the club where she worked as a waitress with numerous others in the same position as her. However, it was the girls that had been working there for years who let her know what she’d end up doing within a year, something she refused to believe due to her own ignorance towards the real world.

It's been four years since then and Magdalena is still working at the club, only now she is something she never could have predicted and today, she is not only a favourite but one of the main five girl's working at The Moulin Rouge, someone with privileges which the new girls still had to work for, someone with power and authority no matter how little it may be but most importantly she is someone who is allowed to save money of her own instead of paying back the man who initially sold her. Still, she is continuously learning to use her femininity to her advantage, though one of the brutal truths she has discovered over the years is that the real sinners in society were the one's who ran it.

Option Two:
The snow had been falling steadily all morning and it didn't look like it was going to stop any time soon. Joshua Campbell scrunched his face up in a frown as he lifted his gaze to look to the sky. Snow. It really was quite a bother.

And it certainly didn't make it better that Diagon Alley seemed to be getting more and more crowded. Joshua sighed and pointed his wand at the large box that was currently placed on the doorstep of his shop. He had to get going. He had an order to deliver.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" The elderly man muttered and watched the box hover in the air for a moment. Honestly, did St. Mungo's really need that much tinsel? And with glitter of all things? He sighed again. If it hadn't been for the rather convincing stamp on the order, he would have been likely to believe it had been a prank by one of those orphaned rascals living up there.

Oh well, there was no point in waiting. Joshua deftly stirred the box down the doorstep and out onto the street, carefully levitating it above the heads of the crowd.

"Coming through! Coming through!" His voice sounded over the chatter of the crowd. "Keep out! Move ahead! Go on!" This was going way too slow. People were in the way and walking like they had all day! He huffed. Luckily the road was down hill.

"Coming through! Coming th--- arrrgh!" Joshua let out a loud shout as his feet suddenly slipped in the snow and sent him, the box, and several long strands of tinsel tumbling into the person who had been walking in front of him.

"For Merlin's sake!" Joshua muttered angrily as he hurried to his feet again, red and gold tinsel now decorating his black coat. "I am so sorry! This blasted snow!" He looked apologetic at the person he had crashed into.

Roleplay Response:
After working a full night at the club and having only managed three hours of sleep, Magdalena was on the go again.

Life now a days was non stop for her, always having to do something or be somewhere to meet expectations and deadlines given to her by both of the men she worked for, since if she didn't she would not only lose the money she was desperately attempting to save up in the hopes she'd one day be able to live free, but she would also lose the respect and admiration gained over the years from her employers.

Though, today it was just one of them she was late for.

Master Duke was an impatient man, especially after having promoted her to personal assistant. It was not often she was late either, but when trying to get ready and find who out of the fourteen girls she worked with had taken her favourite pair of stockings (this time, it just so happened to have been Milena) it was incredibly difficult not to develop a habit of tardiness.

The heels of her expensive shoes that had so graciously been gifted to her by Master Duke himself clicked against the icy pavements as she rushed towards Gringott's where he was expecting her at any moment. For some reason, the streets were particularly busy that day and so no matter how many pardons and excuse mes she uttered it was still a challenge to move swiftly through the crowds, especially when --

"For Merlin's sake! I am so sorry! This blasted snow!"

Out of no where, several strings of tinsel fell down onto her which would undoubtedly leave her looking a tacky, sparkling mess. She groaned irritably, but before she could curtly turn to complain to who was at fault the box that the decorations had been in landed straight on her head, as if it had been aimed specifically at her. Reasonably impressive manicured fingered reached up, slowly lifting the box from her elegant up do and revealing hardened features and cold bronze eyes.

"Idiota człowiek!*" She spat in her mother tongue, "Are you blind? Can you not see where there is ice? Must you wizards insist on using magic for everything?"

Never would she understand why jobs that could be done so much better by hand were carried out using magic. It was lazy, almost embarrassing to witness.
