Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name:
Ash Newry

Birthday:
 25th of February, 1947

Hometown:
Portree, Isle of Skye

Bloodline:
Pureblood

Magical Strength (pick one):
Charms

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Conjuring & Summoning

Year (pick two):
First Year, Second Year

Biography:
Ash was born as the first and only child of a loving father and a doting mother on a wizarding farm on the outskirts of the tiny seaside town of Portree on the Isle of Skye, deep within the Scottish hinterlands. While normally such an inauspicious place of origin would point to a childhood steeped in the mundane and the simpler things in life, for Ash this was certainly not the case. The Newry family, after all, were a long established Pureblood family and one with a unique distinction from many of their contemporaries. The Newry's were a proud and well established family of wandmakers. While certainly not the most prestigious practitioners of their arcane art, Ash nonetheless grew up surrounded by old and archaic books, haphazard piles of wandwoods and all manner of magical beasts, kept for the strength of their various hairs, feathers and venom's that are useful as wandcores.

While the family home in Portree is where the wands are made, they also keep a small shop in the somewhat disreputable Knockturn Alley. As a child, Ash would often end up being brought along to the store with his father and left in the back room with instructions to 'be quiet, not annoy the customers and above all else to 'Not. Leave. The. Shop.' Naturally these instructions often fell on deaf ears, though through the years Ash developed both a love for good books and an almost innate ability to keep out of trouble and keep from being noticed.

Ash's father, Rowan Newry, was an often busy man and the principle wandmaker in the family following the death of Ash's paternal grandparents during the war. He had been a Ravenclaw in school, and is a fairly absent father. He is more often found pursuing his craft or his various research projects, than spending any significant time with his only child. Both of Ash's parents are followers of the old Pureblood traditions and while not as strict as some, he has certainly been raised as a proper Pureblood along with all that that entails.

His mother Ameline is a Hufflepuff from a long line of old wealthy Purebloods, the Gautier's. She fell in love with and married his father in secret after they graduated, as her father would never have approved of her marrying a wizard of such low social standing, even considering his blood status. After they were married, she was all but thrown from the family, her parents furious that she would defy their wishes. While his mother sometimes complains about their lack of money, status and all of the things she grew up with, she is fairly happy living on their farm and is largely responsible for looking after the many and varied magical creatures they keep.

When he was five, Ash first exhibited accidental magic. His mother, who had been cooking dinner at the time, was shocked to discover that her child was levitating bits of ham off of the chopping block in the kitchen to eat. While initially angry, eventually she had calmed down and was thrilled to learn that her child was definitely magical.

Growing up in such a remote place, Ash has few friends his own age and most of the other children he interacts with are various cousins and the children of his parents friends, when they go to visit other parts of magical Britain. Ash is homeschooled for the most part, and learns about Magical Britain and about writing from his mother and father, along with the basics of their family craft. At first Ash had begged his parents to be allowed to go to the nearby Muggle school, until one day when he had been playing outside a group of older Muggle boys chased him and threatened him, calling him all kinds of names. Ash was saved when he managed to climb up into the boughs of a Sycamore tree on the edge of Portree and hide until they left.

It was here, in an ancient Sycamore, that Ash finally found his first and only real friend. Standing barely six inches tall, and initially terrified of the big human invader of its home, Ash and the little Bowtruckle he as a seven year old intelligently named Stick quickly became all but inseparable. As the child of a wandmaker, his parents were not surprised in the least, as the Newry family had a long history of forging bonds with the small guardians of the various wand wood bearing trees.

Now as a ten year old, Ash is impatiently waiting to be allowed to go to famous Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and it is rare to find him without either his nose buried in a book, playing Quidditch with his dad and his cousins, or out in the yard with his mother learning all that there is to know about the various magical creatures they keep, and pestering her with questions about her years at Hogwarts.

Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request:
Ash would want to go to the same house as his Cousin, Vesper Delacroix. Otherwise, let the Hat decide.

Personality:
Ash is scared of his own shadow, largely inept socially and is absolutely terrified of people in the main. Having grown up as an only child on a farm full of magical creatures, Ash is much more comfortable when he is surrounded by fantastical creatures than by other wizards and witches, especially when those other wizards and witches are the same age as he is. Ash is also more than a little bit scared of muggles, muggle technology and the muggle world. He was raised on a healthy diet of paranoia and pureblood fear, and the muggle children who bullied him relentlessly in his home town certainly haven't improved his opinion of anything muggle or muggle related.

On the other hand, Ash has a vivid and wild imagination, and a strong love of books, stories and magic. He has dreams of one day being a great wizard and doing wonderful things like the characters from the story books he has read. That is, if he can get over his jumpiness. Ash is usually quiet, and has an uncanny ability to almost blend into the background and let others take the lead in social situations. On good days, he doesn't let this bother him and he is a great listener and friend to those few people he lets get close to him. On bad days, he comes across as being moody and withdrawn, like a dark storm cloud threatening to burst open at any moment.

Appearance:
Ash is fairly small for his age and has mousy brown hair that tends to be in a state of disarray no matter what he does with it. He uses his small size to his advantage to avoid notice and is usually fairly successful. After all, no one ever really plays any attention to the small, weedy looking average kid. He has stormy grey eyes that tend to hide emotion rather than show it, unless that emotion happens to be something darker or angry. When he is angry, you can tell just by looking at his eyes.

Ash has freckles on his face, and is usually dressed in neat, well cared for but practical clothing. He avoids extravagant, rich or designer outfits and tends to be dressed fairly simply. Ash does have something of a fondness for scarves, as he can hide his face in them and people don't look at you too weirdly when you wear one.

Option 2:

That rat of his was in for it now.

The gray little rascal had disappeared from his clutches at breakfast. Again.

Before Hugh even knew what was happening, Merlin had shot across the floor, somehow managing to avoid all the feet walking across the hall and had escaped through the open doors.

Which meant that Hugh was now stomping through rows of flowers and other various flora, searching for the small creature. It was like the rat knew Hugh was allergic to most flowers. Merlin always chose to run to the gardens whenever he got away from Hugh. It was as if the rat did not want to have him for an owner.

Hugh had named his pet Merlin because he had hoped the powerful name would give the rat more incentive to be more than a rat. Not that he expected Merlin to change into a wizard or anything, but rats were just so...useless, for the most part. With a name like Merlin, Hugh thought it might give the rat purpose.

The only purpose Merlin seemed to have was getting away from Hugh as often as possible.

As the fifth year trudged into the second row of flowers, not taking much care to avoid trampling the first row, he felt the first sneeze building up pressure in his nose and behind his eyes.

"You blasted rat! Where are you?"

He pulled apart a section of bright red flowers; he didn't know what they were called because he despised flowers, and ducked his head low to peer into the depths of the flowerbed. It was moving closer in proximity to the flowers that finally did it. Hugh took in three great breaths and then let out an almighty sneeze. It was strong enough to disturb some of the dirt on the ground before him.

Groaning, he stood up again and wiped his nose on his sleeve. It was as he was turning his head, his nose running up and down his arm, that movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention. Normally one who preferred to put his best face forward, Hugh was a bit embarrassed to be caught wiping his runny nose on his robes.

Nevertheless, Hugh put on his best haughty voice. albeit a bit thickly with his plugged nose and said, "Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

Ash had been out in the grounds of the castle, reading his potions textbook and working on his essay while trying his very darned best to avoid his housemates and their constant efforts to try and include him in conversations when the upper year had come bursting into the garden he had been hiding in. Not having wanted to get caught out alone by the scary looking older boy, Ash quietly bundled up his books and his half finished potions work and inched towards the path that lead back up to the castle. Maybe if he didn't draw attention to himself he could make his escape before the other boy noticed he had been here.

Ash's attempts were foiled when the boy, sneezing loudly and looking like an enraged troll, spotted him and spun around to confront him. Ash glanced back, hiding in his robes and scarf as much as possible and looked like he was wishing the world would swallow him up whole.

"Uhh-mm, h-ello. I was j-just... leaving. Nice to meet you," with that Ash quickly bolted in the other direction.

Or, he tried to at least. He was betrayed in his escape attempt by a rat biting at the hem of his robes and sending him to the ground in a heap, covered in dust, dirt and green grass stains. Ash glared at the rat, then at the older student, before slowly pulling himself up from the ground.

"T-this is yours, right?" Ash grabbed the offending rat, and held it out for the other boy to inspect.

Hi, Ash!

Your application looks great, there's just one thing we'll need you to edit before we can get you accepted.

In your RP sample, your have Hugh's rat bite at Ash's robes and then have Ash grab him. This could be considered powerplay, as it's Hugh's pet and Hugh's player might not have wanted the rat to be found. If you could edit your RP sample to remove the parts in which you control Hugh's rat, that would resolve the issue. You could always have Ash trip over some flowers or his own feet to get the same effect, and simply end the RP sample on him having fallen over instead.

Once you've made the required change, please repost your entire revised application below, and we'll be more than happy to take another look. Thanks!
