Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Pyxis Rawdon Abercrombie

Birthday: September 3rd, 1944

Hometown: Penrith, Cumbria, England

Bloodline: Pureblood

Magical Strength (pick one): Charms

Magical Weakness (pick one): Transfiguration

Year (pick two): 6th / 7th

Biography:
Pyxis Rawdon Abercrombie was born in the Abercrombie family’s English Estate Bridford to Penelope Abercrombie nee Hartridge and Warren Abercrombie. His father was a respected member of the Abercrombie family whose place on the family’s hierarchy was fairly low, while his mother was the eldest daughter, and second child, of the Hartridge patriarch. Pyxis’ father worked as a researcher whose most prominent works were published by the family’s company, if deemed suitable for public consumption, while his mother was a philanthropist who aided in charitable work for causes dear to her heart. Most of Pyxis’ childhood would be spent under the guidance of a governess.

At the bequest of his parents, Pyxis was four when he was introduced to the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic. As Pyxis grew older, these tutoring sessions expanded to include basic magical theory and history of magic with a particular focus on the politics of magical Britain. Pyxis was also taught horse riding by members of the estates staff and his governess arranged for separate tutors in French and Latin. The latter was deemed an essential pursuit as most spells were rooted in the language and according to his father it was essential if Pyxis wanted to one day follow him into the field of research.

Pyxis was six years old when he first used accidental magic. He was in the middle of a riding lesson; on the back of a black pony he had named Theodore, when a loosely fastened saddle and an unexpected gust of wind led to the young pureblood falling off his horse. While he was never in any real danger (as the training grounds had been enchanted to feel soft upon impact) Pyxis’ sense of self-preservation kicked in and he accidentally conjured a circular bubble to cover him. To this day the image of Pyxis rolling around the training ground in a translucent bubble would be counted by Amelia as the funniest she had ever seen. While Pyxis would have normally found such indignity rather embarrassing he was too relieved by the confirmation he was magical to care.

Initially the Abercrombie and Hartridge families alike paid little attention to Pyxis’ upbringing. The Abercrombies a more frequent presence in his life as he was only a few months older than the heiress Farren and her parents thought it was good for Farren to have someone a similar age to play with. However, his maternal grandfather took a more keen interest when medi wizards confirmed that Callum’s heir Edward and his wife would not be producing an heir let alone a spare. This meant much to the man’s consternation, bar a miracle, the family fortune and all that it entailed would go to the son of the daughter he thought little of after marrying her off to a political ally. Pyxis’ new position in his maternal family meant lessons in things such as elocution and social graces were added to his timetable. Thankfully, Pyxis quickly took to these lessons eager to prove that he would be a worthy heir even if his grandfather didn’t seem to think so.

When Pyxis first arrived at Hogwarts, he was memorised by his first sighting of Hogwarts during their boat journey across the black lake. However, he tried to remain outwardly composed and declared to his boat mates it did not compare to the splendour of Daleworth or Bridford. From the moment classes began it was clear the pureblood was a talented student particularly in the fields of Charms and Defence against the Dark Arts. Not only was he a naturally gifted young wizard, but the open disdain of his maternal grandfather gave Pyxis the motivation needed to use this talent to excel. He needed to prove to Callum that he was capable of being an heir the man could be proud of despite the fact he wasn’t the one he wanted to see inherit his estates.

Pyxis chose Arithmancy and Ancient Runes as his electives upon reaching third year. The pureblood heir quickly grew to love Arithmancy as his childhood studies of basic mathematics and magical theory were beneficial. Ancient Runes on the other hand was the first subject he truly struggled with. Despite his fluency in multiple languages he lacked a talent for the subject barely able to form the most basic of runes. Unfortunately for the Slytherin it was too late to switch subjects meaning he would just have to persevere.

Pyxis experienced his first kiss during the Valentine Day visit to Hogsmeade of his fourth year. She was a pureblood, and in the year above him, both of which were pluses in his estimation. It was a pleasant experience, but not one he was quick to repeat. For Pyxis it had simply been an experiment, an opportunity to see what kissing was like, rather than the result of romantic feelings for the girl. Most of his spare time was spent practicing his duelling skills both privately (when he needed to practice a spell away from the eyes of others) and with others when he wanted someone to practice with. That is when his cousin Farren hadn’t succeeded in persuading him to join her for gossip and general teenage antics with her and her friends.

Pyxis’ fifth year was a tense and stressful time with most of it spent in the library studying for his OWLs. This stress manifested in the form of troubling dreams as the month of May approached. One of these dreams had involved him sleeping in and missing a pivotal exam, while another involved becoming naked in the middle of an exam. They were cliché dreams, but to one as obsessed with appearances as Pyxis, they were downright terrifying. Thankfully for the young pureblood his OWLs progressed smoothly and he received a set of grades he and his parents could be proud of bar the annoying Average in Ancient Runes. The fact he suspected he barely scraped a pass made the hurt even worse.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

House Request: Slytherin or failing that Ravenclaw.

Personality:
Pyxis is a perfectionist who is hardest on himself most of all as shown by his constant strive for academic excellence. This is a reflection of Pyxis’ deep rooted securities, which leave him feeling a need to prove himself worthy of love and respect, as a result of growing up with parents who constantly emphasised the importance of projecting himself as a proper young gentleman and a grandfather who resented him for being the son of the wrong child.

Pyxis is a traditionalist with strong opinions other could consider as close minded as he has a very narrow view on how people ought to behave. He strongly believes in the importance of social classes for instance and holds little tolerance for things he considers out of the norm. This narrowmindedness can be a weakness as it can lead to him underestimating the abilities of those he considers beneath him.

Pyxis is an observant and calculating individual. He is quick to pick up on the social nuances surrounding him and every word spoken and every action taken by others is analysed for potential deeper meaning. While not a sadist, who relishes hurting others, Pyxis is not afraid to take decisive action against those he deems as a threat to himself and his family.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.

Option 2:

The seventeen year old was clad in a loose fitting set of robes as he jogged through the grounds of Hogwarts. His face was slightly flush from exertion as sweat dripped down his forehead. It was not the Purebloods favourite activity, but the duelling instructor his parents had hired to tutor him for the last few holidays had stressed the importance of physical fitness if he wanted to truly excel at the art. It made sense to the Abercrombie, as much as Pyxis disliked the idea of participating in something as banal as exercise. A useless lump that lacked the agility to dodge curses which couldn’t be magically countered would not be long for this world.

The Purebloods routine run was soon disturbed by the most surprising of spectacles. Pyxis could not help the grimace which appeared on his face as he watched a boy he assumed to be slightly younger than him trample through flowers with all the grace of a rampaging hippogriff. Honestly, what could be worth making such a commotion?

The seventeen year olds disgust only grew as the boy made his motivation known. Rats were dirty and horrid creatures which any self-respecting witch or wizard would keep far from their person. Pyxis had never understood why the school actively encouraged the magical community to keep such wretched beasts as pets. Owls were useful for communication, as the Floo Network was not accessible to students and cats at least could serve their masters well by killing rats and any other horrid little creep in the local vicinity. But what use did rats have? None! Unless you counted the spread of disease as useful.

Pyxis arched a brow as the boy let out an almighty sneeze and rubbed the snot against his robe with the lack of class befitting the younger boy’s behaviour thus far. “Polite?” He repeated in a low drawl, which failed to hide the incredulous response of the Abercrombie male. This boy had the audacity to lecture him about manners after his poor display of behaviour? It was no wonder the filthy rat had decided to run away. Pyxis found himself pitying the beast for having to deal with an owner like this boy.

“If you do not wish for others to stare then I would advise not trampling through the flower beds the groundskeeper undoubtedly took time to maintain and bellowing through the grounds for all to hear. Honestly, any louder and I’d have assumed you were making use of an Amplifying Charm.” It took all of the seventeen year olds self-control to not laugh at the boy as he reprimanded him.

Pyxis eyed the boy carefully as he considered his next course of action. His first instinct was to walk off and leave the boy to his futile searching. However, he hoped to become Head Boy next year and what would look better than being known to help others in need? He took out his wand and cast an eye on the nearby ground. “If only to spare others listening to your shouts why don’t we try a wizards approach” there was a hint of reproach to the suggestion. Was the boy a wizard or a muggle? “Now listen carefully… Accio rat” the incantation was spoken slowly and carefully in hopes the boy would pick up the spell if he didn’t already know it.

The Abercrombie stood patiently as he waited to see if the beast was close enough for his charm to have succeeded in summoning it.

Hi Pyxis, welcome to the site!

Your application looks good, there’s just a couple of things we’ll need you to edit before we can get you accepted.

Firstly, in your biography, you refer to Pyxis being a Slytherin. Although we try our best to give players the choice of house, this cannot always be guaranteed. You’ll need to remove any references to Pyxis being in Slytherin from your biography.

Secondly, you write:
Quote
Ancient Runes on the other hand was the first subject he truly struggled with. Despite his fluency in multiple languages he lacked a talent for the subject barely able to form the most basic of runes. Unfortunately for the Slytherin it was too late to switch subjects meaning he would just have to persevere.

I’m not sure whether the bolded section refers to when Pyxis was still in his third year or whether this was later in his school years. In third year/the beginning of fourth year, students would still have the flexibility to drop or switch classes, as they wouldn’t have started properly studying for their O.W.L.s yet, so being unable to switch subjects wouldn’t be a logical justification for this and you’ll need to edit it. If your paragraph references later in Pyxis’s fourth year or in his  fifth year, then it’s fine to leave as it is!

Lastly, in your RP sample, you end on Pyxis attempting to summon Hugh’s rat. This is fine and there’s no need to change anything here, but when threading spells in future, you should be aware of our magical rules. To summon a rat, Pyxis’s Conjuring/Summoning level would need to be at least 11, meaning that he would never succeed at summoning a rat at his current magical ability. As mentioned, you don’t need to change this, but it is something to be aware of once accepted.

Once you’ve made the required change(s), please repost your entire revised application below, and we’ll be more than happy to take another look. Thanks!

Hello Calypso,

I have removed the reference to Pyxis as a Slytherin and added clarification that it was the middle of fourth year before Pyxis gave up and conceded it was a subject he had no natural talent for.

Thank you for informing me about the summoning spell issue. I will make sure to keep in line with the magic rules in my posts.
