Biography: (300 words minimum.)
He remembers a father with hair black as night, arms made of stone, and a smile which could cleave through the darkness of night.

He remembers a sister whose face was as pink as an apple, whose laughter was so contagious that it could bring a depressed man to a smile.

And then, they were gone.

The time warp ripped Ryan's family apart, and in turn, took away his mother's smiles and songs. From the tender age of four, he had known loss and neglect. Delirious and in denial, Evangeline neglected her surviving son to the care of others, to mourn her husband and her baby. Thus Ryan grew under the supervision of neighbouring ladies, never receiving the affection a child ought to from his mother.

Times were hard, and Evangeline barely made enough to feed her son and herself. It raised tensions between them, and the boy distanced himself even more from her. This helped mould him into an independent person, one capable of braving the streets of his neighbourhood at the age of seven.

The letter arrived, as expected, shortly after his eleventh birthday. Evangeline smiled genuinely for the first time since the time warp when he showed her the letter. It was sad perhaps, that the mother and son reconciled only when he was about to leave, but Ryan stayed optimistic, enjoying the moment as his mother took him to Diagon Alley for the first time.

The head bloody screamed Slytherin after barely touching his hair. Ambition, they said, but as far was he was concerned, he didn't have any. The young Slytherin shaped up to be quite a troublemaker, but he wasn't as good at getting out of trouble. Some of his charades have given him burnt hair, bruised faces, and a few broken fingers. Nevertheless, he wears these scars like badges and retells the stories with enthusiasm.

His time at Hogwarts wasn't entirely pointless though. Through a stroke of luck and some skill, he lifted the Quidditch cup in his fourth year, and was subsequently named co-captain the following year. However, his lack of leadership skills and ambition led to the downfall of the team. He resigned from his postion and quit completely after the disaster.

He finished school without flying colours, and returned home to find an ailing mother. Winter had not been kind, and pneumonia swept through her like a knife through butter. She passed away only a few weeks after he returned.

Sadness and guilt overwhelmed him. A disappointment of a son. A failure. These words clouded his head as the funeral edged near. Although he had expected a quiet reception, he was thoroughly mistaken as the event was filled with people all bearing the same family name.

His mother's maiden name.

Under the fake tears and meaningless condolences, his maternal grandfather offered to let him bear their name, and to help him financially should the need arise. It boiled his blood to see all these people, only coming to offer help when it was already too late. These people, who ignored his mother for marrying a muggle instead of enduring a loveless marriage.

But he had nothing to his name. No money, and no home if the Kennards are allowed to have their way. Swallowing his pride, he looked deep into his grandfather's eyes, and nodded.

Roleplay:

Option Two -
The snow had been falling steadily all morning and it didn't look like it was going to stop any time soon. Joshua Campbell scrunched his face up in a frown as he lifted his gaze to look to the sky. Snow. It really was quite a bother.

And it certainly didn't make it better that Diagon Alley seemed to be getting more and more crowded. Joshua sighed and pointed his wand at the large box that was currently placed on the doorstep of his shop. He had to get going. He had an order to deliver.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" The elderly man muttered and watched the box hover in the air for a moment. Honestly, did St. Mungo's really need that much tinsel? And with glitter of all things? He sighed again. If it hadn't been for the rather convincing stamp on the order, he would have been likely to believe it had been a prank by one of those orphaned rascals living up there.

Oh well, there was no point in waiting. Joshua deftly stirred the box down the doorstep and out onto the street, carefully levitating it above the heads of the crowd.

"Coming through! Coming through!" His voice sounded over the chatter of the crowd. "Keep out! Move ahead! Go on!" This was going way too slow. People were in the way and walking like they had all day! He huffed. Luckily the road was down hill.

"Coming through! Coming th--- arrrgh!" Joshua let out a loud shout as his feet suddenly slipped in the snow and sent him, the box, and several long strands of tinsel tumbling into the person who had been walking in front of him.

"For Merlin's sake!" Joshua muttered angrily as he hurried to his feet again, red and gold tinsel now decorating his black coat. "I am so sorry! This blasted snow!" He looked apologetic at the person he had crashed into.

Roleplay Response:

Ryan ran his hand through his hair, readjusted the scarf around his neck, and sighed. Snow. It's a wonder how the tiny specks could be so beautiful and irritating at the same time. It didn't help that Diagon Alley was so crowded either. Packed in like sardines, with snow covering the street, movement was almost impossible.

Diagon Alley did bring back nostalgic memories. It was here that he acquired his first wand (and the second one too), his first cauldron (and the second, third and fourth ones) and his first set of robes. Of course, they were now stuffed in a corner somewhere back home, unloved and forgotten.

His train of thought was interrupted when he heard a loud shout from behind. Out of reflex, he turned around to look, and immediately regretted it, as he was showered in glittering tinsel and knocked flat on his  behind. Swearing under his breath, he got up back on his feet and looked at the man who had tumbled into him.

"Yes, this blasted snow..." he said after hearing his apology, his eyes fixed the man's face. After a short while though, he looked away and surveyed the area around them, and sighed. The man probably had not been paying attention to where he was going.

Spreading his arms wide to indicate the mess around them, he said, with a strained smile plastered on his face, "Well, I suppose... you'll be needing a hand with all this."

Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Ryan Scruffler

Birthday: May 23

Hometown: Liverpool, England

Bloodline: Halfblood

Magical Strength (pick one): Charms

Magical Weakness (pick one): Transfiguration

Year (pick two): Preferably fourth year, but third year works as well.

Biography:

Eldest of two, Ryan always thought it was ridiculous that he had a sister, for he had never known her or talked to her. He was born to Bruce Scruffler, a local football hero and Evangeline Harper, a Ministry for Magic worker. He also had a younger sister, Heather, who was born just a few weeks before the time warp, when he and his mother were dragged back in time. As Heather didn’t make it back through time, his mother assumed that she was a muggle, but she never recovered fully from losing both her husband and daughter at once. Evangeline raised Ryan as a single mother, leaving him in the care of an old witch he fondly remembers as “Stinky Mary”, due the strong smell of cat litter around her apartment. She would take him to the park, the playground, the ice-cream parlor. She always followed Ryan’s wishes like the son she never had. She also taught him new magic tricks, much to his mother’s dismay. At times, Evangeline would take him to her office whenever Mary had other appointments. Evangeline found singed paperwork whenever she returned to pick him up.

Mary passed away when Ryan was eight years old, but by then he had already become a streetwise kid. It took quite a while for him to get of his loss, possibly even longer than when the time warp happened. Eventually he got through, but he always kept her brass locket close to him as a reminder. Also, the locket happened to be the only item in old Mary’s possession that did not smell of cats. In the playground, he would captivate and dazzle the other children with amazing feats, such as making withered roses bloom again and juggling footballs. At home, his mother often berated him for using his abilities carelessly, and he would retaliate, say that it was just for fun and roses don’t kill people. He was never one for following rules either. One memorable incident was when he had finished everything on his plate except the vegetables. His mother said he would have to eat two more items on his plate to go out and play. Smiling smugly at his mother, he took out two slices of bacon from his pocket, placed them on the plate, chomped down on them and ran out to play, leaving his mother open mouthed.

His Hogwarts letter arrived a few days before his eleventh birthday. His mother was more excited about it than Ryan himself. She was talking continuously about “shaping all that raw magical talent” and that he will be the brightest of his age. Ryan was more concerned about leaving his current group of friends. Who can say that the kids at this “magic school” would be as easy to impress? They had all his “unique” abilities and among them, he would be just another ordinary student. For all he knew, they could all be snobs and narcissists! However his mother invoked the veto power and sent him packing at once. She wanted him to be a Gryffindor like she was, but Ryan thought it would be better for him if he was a Slytherin, which angered his mother. When the day finally came however, he was quite excited to meet his new classmates. He entered platform 9¾ eagerly….

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: I think Slytherin suits him the most, but if not, Ravenclaw.

Personality:

Ryan is a sweet-talking, joke-cracking smartmouth. Or Mary would say. He usually kept his thoughts to himself, saying what other people want him to say while giving silent remarks to them. As such he was considered a polite young man by his school teachers, much to his mother’s disbelief. He also knows how to make a good joke or two, usually at the expense of the person talking to him. He sticks to his friends closely, but if he had to choose between himself and his friends, he would sell them out in a heartbeat. He also happens to be a quite an obsessed fan of Liverpool FC, his hometown football club.

Appearance:

Taking the appearance of his father, Ryan had a tall, if thuggish physique. His eyes were a darker shade of green with thick eyebrows. He had a dirty blond hair that he usually kept neatly combed. He usually  attracts criticism for his neatly look, often being called a "useless pretty boy" but such insults were thrown so frequently that he has grown immune to them. His eyebrows have been raised so many times that they look poised to remain upwards forever. However his looks has yet to fail him. Perhaps being good in charms has its charms after all.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.

Ryan wobbled across the hall and out into the garden, ignoring the looks everyone threw at him and the giggles of overly annoying second year girls. His eyes scoured the place hoping to meet a member of the staff to resolve his problem, to no avail. "Where's the faculty when you need them?" he muttered as he came in contact with the bright sun. He winced at it his hands reacting automatically to shield his eyes. He came to a stop at a particularly large patch of red flowers which he recognized a moment later as a boy. He swore at his missing rat and rummaged through the red flowers, pulling them apart to look at the flowerbed. After coming to close to a flower however, the boy heaved three impressive breaths and sneezed so loudly that their gamekeeper might mistake it for a troll rampaging through the dungeons. Rubbing his nose with his robes, he looked up and finally saw Ryan staring at him with an amused look on his face. "Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare." Ryan was taken by surprise at the sudden attack, but he smirked and replied "Well, I wasn't staring at you, if that's what you thought. I was simply looking for someone to help me, so yes, you can help me." He spread out his arms, as if showing off something spectacular. "I've got the transfiguration skills of a troll you see. I accidentally transformed myself to a mermaid." He indicated his scaly tail which has taken the place of his legs. "Since both my friends and teachers can't be bothered to lift a finger for me, mind helping a fellow student out?"
