Shop name: Arcane Investigations

Shop Type: This is the main office and research center for Arcane Investigations, a magical detective agency.

Location: I was thinking Hogsmeade, but if you feel it would serve better at another location, I'm cool with that.

Subforum? If accepted I would get the Shopkeeper Subscription

Short Description (50 words max): Missing wizard? Missing wand? Charm gone awry? Stuck with nasty curses? Call Arcane Investigations for all your mysterious magical needs.

Long Description (200 words min): The building was tall and thin like the owner. It appeared to be two stories tall. The top floor had one window facing the street and looked to be a simple apartment. The bottom floor had two bay windows on either side of a glass door. All were dingy and hard to see into. The sign over the door looked faded, though it wasn't very old. In golden letters it read:
Arcane Investigations
Proprietor, Cyrillian Darkmoon

Inside, the room appears larger than it did from the outside. A large wooden desk sits in the center of the room, two high backed chairs in front of it, and a smaller, more mobile chair behind it. Globes of light hang from the ceiling, bathing the room in soft pools of light, leaving some areas in shadow. Shelves and bookcases line the walls.

Books, hundreds, maybe thousands line the walls. On shelves are many relics of past adventures and deeds. Broken wands, strange cloaks, amulets, weapons, all of them rest on stands and displays around the room.

Two doors lead out from behind the room, which serves as an office. One door leads to stairs which lead up to the private apartments above. The other door leads to the back room where the investigators practice their skills, store their discoveries, and sometimes, house those they have contained.

Often the owner and lead investigator can be found sitting behind the desk, studying new cases and preparing. He is Cyrillian Darkmoon and after years serving a professor at Hogwarts and fending of attacks from numerous dark wizards, he has decided to put his talents to use for the wizards around him.

It is common in the wizarding world for people to go missing, for spells to have unforeseen effects, for family heirlooms and powerful artifacts are stolen. Now, Cyrillian Darkmoon is the man to find them. Using detective skills, investigative magic, and his own formidable knowledge of the world around him, Cyrillian takes all cases big and small. From aiding Ministry officials in recovering lost Roman artifacts, to helping the old witch on the corner recover his missing kneazle, he and the teams he chooses to surround himself with strive their hardest to solve all cases. If magic has gone wrong, Cyrillian is your man.

What purpose will this shop serve other than selling things and being the home of your character? Why would people want to RP there just for fun? This shop/office would serve as a means for people to have a more adventurous role-play. Citizens of Elsewhere and students and staff from Hogwarts alike would be able to use the shop  to enhance their own personal stories. It would be a place to flesh out family histories,  to start story lines that would lead to high adventure and exploration elsewhere, and allow different groups to interact. With the upheaval of the war, families would be searching for relatives or heirlooms that had gone missing. Students from Hogwarts could serve as interns if allowed by the Administration and assist in investigations. It would also serve as a place to launch plots by me as a way of getting more RPing in Elsewhere.

Biography: (300 words minimum.)
Cyrillian was orphaned at the moment of his birth, October 31, 1886. His father had been killed in a magical accident months prior, and his mother died in childbirth. Cyrillian was taken by his uncle, Dr. Magnus Shyne, but not to be nurtured. Dr. Shyne was a well known magical healer, but behind closed doors he was an experimenter in the dark arts. An evil experiment conducted on Cyrillian as a newborn drained him of all color but heightened his magical abilities. It was an attempt to create a weapon Shyne hoped could be used to overthrow the establishment and enshrine him as conqueror.

Cyrillian was rescued from the torture he lived in by Hogwarts professor, Jeanette FuCat, who had sensed his abilities and his plight. Cyrillian was placed in a magical orphanage until he was old enough to attend Hogwarts. There, after being sorted in Slytherin (FuCat’s own House), he began to excel in his magical education. It was during his years there that both Professors FuCat and Catalina Merino de Vidal nurtured his latent gifts of Divination.

Because of his advanced nature, Cyrillian was allowed to graduate from Hogwarts early, serving as Head Boy. He returned a year later as a professor and formed lasting relationships with both staff and students. Cyrillian was arrested at the end of his first year of teaching for use of dark magic and spent a year in Azkaban before escaping, purportedly the first wizard to ever do so. He was later exonerated for his crimes after proving he had been framed, though the rumors of his dark heritage never stopped following (and he never denied the use of the dark arts). When the foul, undead Egyptian wizard Azamol returned to menace Professor Samanus McStingy, Cyrillian was instrumental in helping decipher the strange visions and portents and in the ultimate defeat of the dark wizard. His own uncle, Shyne, returned to menace him, and after a protracted battle that almost cost him his soul, Cyrillian defeated his uncle forever, though at the cost of his magic.

Through a series of trials, culminating with a showdown with former classmate and obsessed stalker (and master manipulator), Selene Zelphaney, Cyrillian was able to regain his powers, though they have been significantly reduced by his tribulations.

Cyrillian would later reconnect with a former student who had returned to teach at Hogwarts, Caitlyn Campbell, and despite their age difference, the two fell in love. They were married and Caitlyn soon became pregnant with their first child, a son, Palin. Soon after, Cyrillian learned he had a daughter from a previous love who had been hidden from him. Joan Darkmoon, joined the family for a few years while she attended Hogwarts before moving on in a career in the Ministry. A second daughter, with Caitlyn, Aradia, was born in the following years, and the happy family settled into a simple life.

In the years before the Time Slide, Cyrillian became estranged from Caitlyn and his family for reasons yet unknown. Always an independent person, Cyrillian spent time all over Europe and beyond studying and perfecting his craft in the years since his separation from Caitlyn. Like many, the Time Slide caught him completely unaware, something that disturbed the Diviner, who should have sensed such a massive disturbance. In the wake of the shift, like many, his life has become even more disjointed and new to him. Flashes of a previous time still pervade his sleep, though more and more his former life seems nothing more than a half-forgotten dream.

Cyrillian hopes to return to Hogwarts, the one place that always welcomed him in attempt to pull the shattered pieces of his life back together. It is there, in the castle’s familiar halls that he hopes to recover the shattered remnants of his life, and embark in this new stage of his incredible journey.

Roleplay:
You come across one of these posts on the site. Please select one & reply as your character:

Option One -
Amelia Nixon was many things, but she was never a pushover reporter that people could just usher away with a busy shuffle past. She was dedicated and eager to cut to the very middle of the current political tensions because she was Amelia Nixon and her articles would most certainly become front page material.

“Sir, please! It’s for the Prophet, how do you feel-“

Another one brushed passed her, the shuffling busy masses making their way through Diagon Alley for the lunchtime rush. This had been the best possible time to get people, but none of them were giving her anything to go with.

Only momentarily discouraged, the short red headed lady took a seat on a nearby bench. Her quill resting in her left hand and her notepad ready in the opposite hand. Amelia pouted, tapping the quill against her leg as she scanned the waves of people for somebody - anybody - who looked like they had something to say.

She had been dreaming of her name in bold print, Amelia Nixon: The Source of Today’s Tomorrow. She had been dreaming of the larger office and the secretaries that would fetch her the morning coffee and fetch her anything she needed. The VIP interviews and the most exclusive press passes. But all Amelia had was a page seventeen piece on the rising number of frogs in London.

Hardened by a day of no success, the reporter stood up and started to trod off down the alley. A loose stone on the cobble path caught her heel, sending the distraught girl toppling down to the ground.

“Merlin’s fog watch, my heel is broken! Help!” she yelled as she tried desperately to recover her shoe frantically in the middle of the Diagon Alley moving crowds.

Option Two -
The snow had been falling steadily all morning and it didn't look like it was going to stop any time soon. Joshua Campbell scrunched his face up in a frown as he lifted his gaze to look to the sky. Snow. It really was quite a bother.

And it certainly didn't make it better that Diagon Alley seemed to be getting more and more crowded. Joshua sighed and pointed his wand at the large box that was currently placed on the doorstep of his shop. He had to get going. He had an order to deliver.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" The elderly man muttered and watched the box hover in the air for a moment. Honestly, did St. Mungo's really need that much tinsel? And with glitter of all things? He sighed again. If it hadn't been for the rather convincing stamp on the order, he would have been likely to believe it had been a prank by one of those orphaned rascals living up there.

Oh well, there was no point in waiting. Joshua deftly stirred the box down the doorstep and out onto the street, carefully levitating it above the heads of the crowd.

"Coming through! Coming through!" His voice sounded over the chatter of the crowd. "Keep out! Move ahead! Go on!" This was going way too slow. People were in the way and walking like they had all day! He huffed. Luckily the road was down hill.

"Coming through! Coming th--- arrrgh!" Joshua let out a loud shout as his feet suddenly slipped in the snow and sent him, the box, and several long strands of tinsel tumbling into the person who had been walking in front of him.

"For Merlin's sake!" Joshua muttered angrily as he hurried to his feet again, red and gold tinsel now decorating his black coat. "I am so sorry! This blasted snow!" He looked apologetic at the person he had crashed into.

Roleplay Response:
Option 2:
"There is no need to apologize," Cyrillian, said dusting snow from his black jacket. His eyes scanned the man quickly, ascertaining he was no threat, and in fact was perhaps overtaxed in his work.

Cyrillian pinched a piece of tinsel from his coat. It was a gesture only. The rest of the debris had slid off his jacket at a mental command. His clothes, like many of the objects Cyrillian carried were enchanted. They never collected dirt or grime. Things flowed away from him, or if they did touch they slide off effortlessly.

"You see to be carrying a burden, friend," the albino mage said. In the old days, Cyrillian would have scanned his mind to make sure this was not some threat. He seemed helpless enough, but looks could be deceiving. Alas, those powers had faded with age, so instead he relied on his sense. His wand, slid up a hidden pocket in his sleeve was a second away from his grasp.

"St. Mungo's?" Cyrillian, said noticing the man's badge. "You are headed there? Allow me to accompany you."

He picked a package up from the ground, dusting the snow from it. St. Mungo's had a special place in his heart. His daughter, his first daughter, Joan, born from a misbegotten tryst when he had been young had spent the first eleven years of her life in St. Mungo's, asleep in a coma, trapped in a dream. Cyrillian had never known she was even alive until she had finally woken up and sought him out.

Every year at Christmas, Cyrillian made a point to visit the hospital. He usually brought a rather large sum for donation. He would spend an hour or two wandering the halls and offering his help to the over taxed healers in the children's wing. He was no healer, but he had spent years studying magic in all its forms and had become quite adept at field healing.

Usually he snuck out seen by few, the money waiting for them. Today though it seemed he would be helping decorate the hospital. With a flick of a wrist the tinsel and decorations transformed from the rather cheap pieces they had been to more expensive looking, higher quality pieces. It was, after all, the least he could do.

CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character name: Cyrillian Darkmoon

Previous and/or Current Character(s) if applicable: Just Me

Character age: 59 years old

Character education:
Attended Hogwarts as a Slytherin (1897-1903, graduated a year early)
Taught at Hogwarts off and on for about 20 years, served as House Head (Hufflepuff and Slytherin once, I think) and Keeper of the Keys. Taught: Charms, Divination, Potions, Defense Against the Dark Arts)

Strength and weaknesses (details please):
Cyrillian has always been a gifted Diviner. It is a gift that has come easily to him and to a degree more advanced than most. For a time he served on a group called the Council of True Seers, a sort of Illuminati like group of Diviners who are responsible for recording and analyzing the great Prophecies of the ages. He has since left the Council for unknown reasons.

Cyrillian was always a gifted wizard in multiple areas, was proficient in wandless magic, and was fairly powerful in legilimency, though that power has vanished due to his adventures and trials. Because of his battle with evil forces his magic levels have been reduced to “normal” levels, except for Divination with he still excels at. HIs major magical weakness would be Transfiguration.

As far as other character weaknesses: Cyrillian has been classified as a Dark Wizard and spent a year in Azkaban before escaping (and subsequently being pardoned). His record as a professor at Hogwarts and the sacrifices he made to protect staff and students has exonerated him, though his dark reputation is still a subject for rumors.  He’s also a bit of a jerk and has a hard time relating to others. Cyrillian also suffers emotionally as he is separated from his wife and children, and has no knowledge of where they might be.

Physical description:
Cyrillian is 6’1” and though on the slender side, is fairly muscled. Beneath his robes he bears the scars of many of battles (helping to defeat the ancient Egyptian wizard Azamol, dispatching the dark wizard Magnus Shyne, etc.) though none of those are visible while he is dressed. In addition, a magical experiment conducted by his uncle at birth has left him with white skin and hair, and red eyes. In the past he has sometimes attempted to hide his features via magical means, but has come to embrace his odd looks.

Personality (nice, rude, funny etc. Paragraph please.):
Cyrillian has always been a studious man, and has little time for jokes and pranks. He can come off a bit as rude and superior, though he cares very much for the people around him. As a youth, he often felt jaded and alienated because of his looks. As a younger man, Cyrillian dabbled in the dark arts and his personality reflected that. However, age and close relationships have tempered that anger a bit. Finding love and starting a family with Caitlyn Campbell smoothed a lot of the edges on Cyrillian and forced him to grow emotionally. Now  approaching wizarding middle age, Cyrillian had resumed his studies, and despite his serious persona, is looking for comfort and a place where he fits in again.

Hopes and dreams. Why are you teaching at Hogwarts?:
Hogwarts has always been home for Cyrillian. An orphan, Hogwarts was the only place that Cyrillian ever felt he belonged. He went from student to professor, and though he strayed from the school for different reasons over the years, he has always found his way back home. Cyrillian cares about young people and strives to make them better through education. He believes preparation and knowledge are the key to surviving the often dangerous experiences the wizarding world throws at people.

Roleplay Response:
Cyrillian was late, but he wasn’t overly concerned. Cyrillian arrived when he wanted to and others would have to deal with it. Or they would not. He really didn’t care either way.

The path to the office, and the office itself, was familiar to him. He had been friends with many of the men and women who had held this position before. Still, it was interesting to see what the new occupant had done with the place. After many years away the room still felt comfortable to him, and he nodded to several of the portraits, and they to him, as he made his way to the neat and organized desk. He, himself, was always organized, and recognized and respected that trait in the Headmistress.

“I had matters to attend to,” he said in reply to her question, though immediately thought better of it. He wished he could take it back, but the words were out of his mouth and gone before he could stop himself.

These weren’t the days of Tibble, or back even further to the Masters and Mistresses he had known. The school, despite the building being familiar to him, was all knew. New faces, new names. Had he been hoping for something here? Some sign of his daughter; just not she would be in the middle of her education, though of course she was on no roster at Hogwarts.

“My apologies, Headmistress,” he said. The old Cyrillian would have choked on the words. He would have spat them with sarcasm and arrogance.

But the old Cyrillian was gone. He had been through too many things, seen too many things,  lost too many things.

“It has been some time since I was last in the castle, and I’m afraid I was a little distracted by some of the changes. It will not happen again.”

He waited a minute and then knew he should continue; this was an interview after all. She wanted to hear from him.

“I appreciate you taking the time to meet with me. Not… not everyone would. You’ve read my application by now, and you know my qualifications. I…”  His shoulders slumped. “I don’t know where else to go. This is my home. It’s all I have now.”

He was quiet again. He remembered many conversations he’d had in this very room. Many frantic plans and defenses, many discussions of students. He’d met his wife at this school. Met his friends. Met himself. He could see them all, still here, ghosts of memories. There he was, a young man running down the hallway to the Divination classroom. There were Kity and Jarrold and Oswald meeting in his office. There was Palin on his way to the Ravenclaw Common Room to meet his mother and father for dinner.

“There are… there are a lot of personal ghosts in this castle, Headmistress. They… they’ve all come to visit me again. Or, perhaps, I them. I won’t be late again, you can count on that. Now, what did you want to speak about?”

There were ghosts here and bad memories and good ones, and he would revisit them all, but for now he had an aggravated Headmistress to deal with.
