Option 2:

That rat of his was in for it now.

The gray little rascal had disappeared from his clutches at breakfast. Again.

Before Hugh even knew what was happening, Merlin had shot across the floor, somehow managing to avoid all the feet walking across the hall and had escaped through the open doors.

Which meant that Hugh was now stomping through rows of flowers and other various flora, searching for the small creature. It was like the rat knew Hugh was allergic to most flowers. Merlin always chose to run to the gardens whenever he got away from Hugh. It was as if the rat did not want to have him for an owner.

Hugh had named his pet Merlin because he had hoped the powerful name would give the rat more incentive to be more than a rat. Not that he expected Merlin to change into a wizard or anything, but rats were just so...useless, for the most part. With a name like Merlin, Hugh thought it might give the rat purpose.

The only purpose Merlin seemed to have was getting away from Hugh as often as possible.

As the fifth year trudged into the second row of flowers, not taking much care to avoid trampling the first row, he felt the first sneeze building up pressure in his nose and behind his eyes.

"You blasted rat! Where are you?"

He pulled apart a section of bright red flowers; he didn't know what they were called because he despised flowers, and ducked his head low to peer into the depths of the flowerbed. It was moving closer in proximity to the flowers that finally did it. Hugh took in three great breaths and then let out an almighty sneeze. It was strong enough to disturb some of the dirt on the ground before him.

Groaning, he stood up again and wiped his nose on his sleeve. It was as he was turning his head, his nose running up and down his arm, that movement in his peripheral vision caught his attention. Normally one who preferred to put his best face forward, Hugh was a bit embarrassed to be caught wiping his runny nose on his robes.

Nevertheless, Hugh put on his best haughty voice. albeit a bit thickly with his plugged nose and said, "Can I help you with something? It is not polite to stare."

Name: Jane Belrose

Birthday: December 16, 1944

Hometown: Toulouse, France

Bloodline:
Muggleborn

Magical Strength (pick one):
Transfiguration

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Divination

Year (pick two): Ideally first year, second would be my next choice.

Biography:
Jane was born from a Muggle and a Squib in Toulouse, France, where she spent a decent portion of her early childhood. She began to go through the French schooling system, but not much was expected out of her. Jane was late to talk and she had difficulty socializing in school. Gradually she became better, but she was still labeled as inept. What many people failed to realize though was that she was not dumb. The young girl was actually quite intelligent, but harbored feelings of anxiety. She longed to vouch for herself and speak up when people were making false assumptions, but she never had the courage to.

When she was eight-years-old, Jane’s father landed a job that took him to England. The Belroses packed up, moved, and settled down in an urban city. Usually, Jane was not a huge fan of change. It disrupted the comforting feeling of being in a rhythm, but she was secretly glad that they were getting out of Toulouse. By moving to England, she fled her old classmates: the ones who made fun of her odd quirks. Jane was hopeful that those in England would be different, and for the most part, it was true. Nobody in England already knew her as ‘the weird girl.’ Through the years of making faux-pas, she had finally gotten a grasp on how to appear what most would consider ‘normal.’ She made a few slip-ups every now and then, but none were as bad from when she was younger.

For once, Jane was beginning to enjoy school. She was excited to continue on with a little friend group she found herself fitting neatly into; however, that would not seem to be the case, for when she was nine, the presence of magic became apparent. The young girl had caught a nasty cold and began to sneeze bubbles. As her father was a Squib, he knew all too well what that meant. He contacted his sister, who was a witch. Her immediate advice was to make sure Jane attended Beauxbatons. After all, Jane was from France, but her parents didn’t like the idea of their only daughter being so far from home. They inquired about other options and believed Hogwarts would be the best solution. Just like that, her fate was sealed. Come time for the next school year, the young witch got a letter from Hogwarts. She was to go to learn magic. Little did she know, her future would drastically change.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

House Request: Hufflepuff

Personality:
Ever since she was a little girl, Jane had been a bit of an oddity. She does not fare well in social situations and quickly becomes fatigued in large crowds. She rarely knows what to say and oftentimes struggles to even make eye contact with whomever she is speaking with. When she gets anxious, she bounces her legs or pats her thighs. This behavior is also observable when it’s too bright or her clothes are uncomfortable. It is simply an innate attempt to quell the overstimulation, but unfortunately can come across as strange to onlookers.

Contrary to what many would believe from her anxiety and unique conducts, Jane is rather intelligent. Her mind is filled with insatiable curiosity. Once she gets on a subject she is fascinated with, it is not uncommon to catch her in the library doing research, simply because she could not think of anything more fun than satisfying her current interest. As one would expect from such actions, she has been called a ‘walking encyclopedia’ from time to time. That being said, seeking knowledge is not necessarily what truly drives Jane. She has been said to have a heart of gold. While she may not entirely get humans, she had always been able to connect with animals. She displays care to both, but especially with creatures. She would often find injured insects and attempt to heal them. Being a young girl, there was only so much she could do, but it nonetheless filled her with feelings of pride and joy. Other qualities alluding to Jane’s kindred spirit are honesty and loyalty. Negative actions tend to plague the witch with feelings of guilt and despair. Lying and betrayal are perhaps the largest contributors to this. Though she is a terrible liar to begin with, she would almost never have the malicious intent to.

Appearance:
Jane possesses a slim body and stands at around the average height for a girl her age. Though she is not yet done growing, she will eventually reach her peak height of 5’6” (1.67m). Her skin is flawless and has a natural light tan to it. Her dark chocolate eyes complement her long wavy hair, which she tends to keep long because she likes to fidget with it-- an activity Jane found to be less distracting and more ‘typical’ for girls her age. In school, she obviously wears robes just as everyone else, but outside of school she tends to go for comfort rather than style. Soft, flowy clothes and sneakers are her go-to for nearly any situation.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.

Option 2:

It was a lovely day at Hogwarts. The air was warm and a light breeze rippled across the gardens every now and then. It was surprising more students were not outside, but Jane supposed they had other things to do. She, on the other hand, did not. Her homework was finished and the spring weather was calling her name.

The witch had just settled into a comfortable position when she heard rustling in a nearby flower patch. All of a sudden, a mouse-- no, a rat-- darted out. Her eyes lit up with surprise and she swiftly reached down to catch the rat. She had her hands around its small body when she heard an ungodly sneeze come from the flowers. It startled the girl, causing her hands to flinch and the rat to scurry away. Her lips twitched to form a pout and she glanced at the boy who had sneezed. He mentioned it being impolite to stare.

“I’m sorry,” she mumbled, now looking down at her feet. “You weren’t um, after that rat by any chance, were you?” she asked, pointing in the direction it fled. She knew that several students had pets. Although an owl was far more common than a rat, it wasn’t unheard of to have one. It was entirely possible that the rat was simply a wild one running away from a rogue student rushing through the greenery, but Jane would have rather been safe than sorry.

Hi Jane!

I loved your application! Jane is an incredibly relatable character. However, before we can accept your application, there is one issue that will need to be straightened out.

In your roleplay sample, you control the actions of Hugh's rat and pick it up. Since this is Hugh's pet, this is considered powerplaying. You could, instead, try to frame this as an attempt to pick up the rat. This way, Hugh would still get to decide what ultimately happens to his rat. Once you've made this change, please repost your entire revised application and we'll be happy to give it another look!
