Being the middle child came with all sorts of stereotypes. Not as smart, not as capable, not as adjusted. Too many negatives to count on her thin fingers. So many that her family didn’t really pay attention to her and when they did it wasn’t for long.

She didn’t remember a time when her parents looked at her with much more than disdain. Always the disappointing daughter. Hearing her father talk about how lucky they were to have two extra when she messed up.

Her older sister, Winnie, was her father’s favorite and her younger sister, Jade, was her mother’s. That left her with all the breathing room in the world. Part of her resented her siblings growing up, but when she got out of school she learned to appreciate the freedoms. Winnie had been placed under her father’s wing burdened with learning the family business. Jade was married off as soon as their mother found a good match.

She wasn’t the pride of the family -granted they tried to marry her off far too many times.

Too wild, too opinionated, too much were all things that were said as contracts were torn up and wedding plans were paused during her last year of school. She wasn’t about to be married off to some random, so she did everything she could to put a stop to it.

She spent her school years in Gryffindor dueling and playing quidditch. Her favorite classes were charms and potions and these seemed to be where she excelled.

Graduating with top marks she found her way into the ministry as an auror trainee. Finding her niche in external investigations where she worked for the last five years. She loved how the evidence told a story. Figuring out the motives and passions of the unsub. Building a profile that tapped into the person’s psyche. What she loved even more though was being untouchable. It was all a thrill that had her firmly in its grasp.

Recently she put in a request to be placed on the Hit Witch and Wizard Taskforce.

Option Two -
The snow had been falling steadily all morning and it didn't look like it was going to stop any time soon. Joshua Campbell scrunched his face up in a frown as he lifted his gaze to look to the sky. Snow. It really was quite a bother.

And it certainly didn't make it better that Diagon Alley seemed to be getting more and more crowded. Joshua sighed and pointed his wand at the large box that was currently placed on the doorstep of his shop. He had to get going. He had an order to deliver.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" The elderly man muttered and watched the box hover in the air for a moment. Honestly, did St. Mungo's really need that much tinsel? And with glitter of all things? He sighed again. If it hadn't been for the rather convincing stamp on the order, he would have been likely to believe it had been a prank by one of those orphaned rascals living up there.

Oh well, there was no point in waiting. Joshua deftly stirred the box down the doorstep and out onto the street, carefully levitating it above the heads of the crowd.

"Coming through! Coming through!" His voice sounded over the chatter of the crowd. "Keep out! Move ahead! Go on!" This was going way too slow. People were in the way and walking like they had all day! He huffed. Luckily the road was down hill.

"Coming through! Coming th--- arrrgh!" Joshua let out a loud shout as his feet suddenly slipped in the snow and sent him, the box, and several long strands of tinsel tumbling into the person who had been walking in front of him.

"For Merlin's sake!" Joshua muttered angrily as he hurried to his feet again, red and gold tinsel now decorating his black coat. "I am so sorry! This blasted snow!" He looked apologetic at the person he had crashed into.

Roleplay Response:

For a moment she had thought a midday date had sounded fun, but considering the snow that had begun to build up that was now melting through the tip of her favorite heels she was regretting it a bit. Sutton paused in frustration as she looked at her watch. Two minutes late. She hoped the beast of a man that she felt sorry enough to say yes to wouldn't expect a second date.

"Three more minutes." She said to herself as she paced outside of the restaurant.

In her head she chastised herself. A bit of a pessimist, but she didn't have time to waste. She had much better things to be doing. Catching up on the blasted paper work that had seemed to ramp up recently at work, sitting on a beach with a drink in her hand, reading the latest witch weekly. Really anything other than the thing she was doing.

With a sigh she stepped out onto the crowded sidewalk, not paying attention.

One shout later her mouth was left agape as tinsel and glitter crashed into and around her. "Watch where you're going!" She yelled almost instinctually, not bothering to try and help the man up.

As he apologized though she let out a calming breath. "It's fine." She said, peeling tinself off. "It's fine." She repeated this time more for herself. This was just what she needed. With the way this day was going she should have just gone home and slept.

"Who needs this much tinsel anyways?" She questioned as she peeled more off of herself. "This is ridiculous."

The daughter of Orion and Charlotta Mason, Astraea was an only child, and often indulged. As pureblood children are often found to be. Throughout her childhood she was simultaneously indulged and neglected. By a father who worked far too often, and a mother who wanted nothing more than to drink tea and talk with her friends. She had no time for her daughter's whims. Her nanny, Elspeth, however – gave the little girl everything she wanted. Garden parties, and games of pretend, answering question after question about from the very inquisitive soul. Often, Eslpeth would whisper to Astraea that she would have a brother one day. But he never appeared, and she was always alone, the last Mason child.

At age six, she realised not every question was supposed to be asked aloud. Especially not at Mama’s fancy parties. For everyone would go quiet, and nobody answered. Then Astraea would be quickly shepherded away.

At age eleven, she was sent to Durmstrang rather than Hogwarts. Her father’s legacy school. There she felt like a puzzle piece dropped into the wrong, and could never quite figure out how to fit in. Still naturally inquisitive, although not socially outgoing. Labelled as awkward, she learned to shrug off the expectations of the world. Even if he couldn’t shrug off the expectations of her parents.

By fourteen, she witnessed her mothers tears when she was told the inevitable truth. The Mason line would end with Astraea, as there would be no son to continue the family legacy. At least, not by Charlotta. Orion withdrew, and life at home became so quiet and cold that Astraea stopped answering summons to return for the holidays.

At seventeen, when presented to pureblooded society she smiled through grit teeth. Wishing she were anywhere else. The matches were drawn, for a proper pureblooded arranged marriage, but Astraea offered brittle smiles and intolerable attitudes to each one until the families thought better of it.

Her mother’s misery doubled. She hadn’t sired a son, and her daughter would die an unwanted spinster. Charlotta Mason held firm to this rhetoric for many years, every encounter leading to tears. While Astraea fled her mother’s disappointment and her father’s preoccupation to explore the world. Deciding that her problems were better left for her future self. There were better things to see in the world than the reflection of her own failings.

Astraea thrived outside of England, albeit living off her father’s shiny galleons. She undertook years of study and work in morgues as a magical forensic pathologist, exhuming bodies and performing autopsies. Sometimes for law enforcement. Other times for rich, freelance clients who years later paid to find out how their relatives had passed. It satiated her inquisitive nature, and offered her a freedom she couldn’t pass up. The only part that grated against her nature was that her father had been a Mortician for the rich and pure of blood, and she felt like she was following, slightly, in his footsteps.

At twenty eight, a decade later, she arrived back in England. Summoned by the news of her father’s passing. With her skin tanned by the sun, curls untamed and dirt beneath her fingernails, she sauntered into Mason Manor as the visage of her mothers nightmares. Arguments were soothed with the knowledge that Astraea had intended to stay three days for the funeral and leave thereafter. Brazil was calling her name. Only her mother had not woken the next morning. Joining her father.

The ministry officials had knocked on the door of her room at Hotel Ilume. Her father’s will had been signed in green ink.The stipulations were crisp and clear. As his only heir, she needed to return and reside in England, uphold the family name, or she wouldn’t receive so much as a tarnished knut.

Option One -
Amelia Nixon was many things, but she was never a pushover reporter that people could just usher away with a busy shuffle past. She was dedicated and eager to cut to the very middle of the current political tensions because she was Amelia Nixon and her articles would most certainly become front page material.

“Sir, please! It’s for the Prophet, how do you feel-“

Another one brushed passed her, the shuffling busy masses making their way through Diagon Alley for the lunchtime rush. This had been the best possible time to get people, but none of them were giving her anything to go with.

Only momentarily discouraged, the short red headed lady took a seat on a nearby bench. Her quill resting in her left hand and her notepad ready in the opposite hand. Amelia pouted, tapping the quill against her leg as she scanned the waves of people for somebody - anybody - who looked like they had something to say.

She had been dreaming of her name in bold print, Amelia Nixon: The Source of Today’s Tomorrow. She had been dreaming of the larger office and the secretaries that would fetch her the morning coffee and fetch her anything she needed. The VIP interviews and the most exclusive press passes. But all Amelia had was a page seventeen piece on the rising number of frogs in London.

Hardened by a day of no success, the reporter stood up and started to trod off down the alley. A loose stone on the cobble path caught her heel, sending the distraught girl toppling down to the ground.

“Merlin’s fog watch, my heel is broken! Help!” she yelled as she tried desperately to recover her shoe frantically in the middle of the Diagon Alley moving crowds.

Roleplay Response:

Diagon Alley exhausted Astraea.

It was the people, she supposed, bustling about their lives, crowded in together. Ironic, maybe, since she studied people for a living. Or a hobby, as her mother had once called it. Still, their presence and the way they pressed in around her tightened a corset of tension around her ribs until she found it hard to breathe.

Even a tight, frigid smile didn’t scare them away.

Massaging her temples, the woman reminded herself that this – like many things since returning to England – was a necessary evil. She needed to see the herbologist before returning to the Hotel Ilume, or she’d never get a good night's sleep.

Astraea weaved through the bustling crowds with single minded determination. Until another woman fell, stopping her progress. She watched the woman’s descent to the cobblestones with nothing more than a blink, holding her ground against the crowd. Her brow arching when the woman began to yell. She didn’t move to reach for the heel, and instead folded her arms across her chest.

“Did you also break your ankle?” She asked, cocking her head to one side. “If not, you’re perfectly capable of standing and getting your heel. You’re not a damsel in distress by any means.”

SHOPKEEPER PERMIT
You must have applied as an Elsewhere character before completing this permit.

Shop name: Völund brooms
Shop Type: A brand and repair shop for Quidditch brooms
Location: Diagon Alley
Subforum? Yes please!

Short Description (50 words max): A brand and repair shop for Quidditch brooms. Get your custom-made broom now! Or stop by and have coffee with Zak!

Long Description (200 words min):

Background
The idea for Völund brooms appeared in reaction to the standardisation of brooms and the norm of speed as the idealised Quidditch quality. Coming from a background as a professional Keeper, Weiland was unhappy with the branding of Keeper as a "boring" position with lackluster recruitment, blaming this in part on Quidditch ideals and broom builds that, indeed, made Keeper a harder-than-necessary position to play.

Resultingly, Weiland started requesting broom builds as customised for his player style. This included experimenting with heavier woods for increased stability, and with flexible woods that were better at handling the high risk of impact from high-speed Quaffles and Bludgers.

After a Quidditch accident that rendered Weiland immovable from the waist down, he wanted to bestow these ideas on the rest of the community and started researching how to make his vision into a business model. As such, Weiland's ambition was to build room for an increased diversity in players and their brooms.

The business
The shop provides broom and equipment in three main categories being beginner, intermediate, and customised/professional brooms, with increasing focus on fitting the broom to position play and an individual's wishes and player style.

Beginner and intermediate brooms are divided into three categories being (a) high-impact Keeper's and Beater's builds with focus on stability and resilience, (b) Seeker's and Chaser's builds that are speedier and lighter, focusing more on avoiding getting hit than being able to take a hit, as well as (c) combination builds typical for example for children/youth on school teams whose positions tend to shift around a lot. The shop provides advice in the case where the customer is unsure how to tackle specific game-related challenges and there should be plenty of room for variation inside the groups, in particular on the intermediate level.

Professional brooms have alternatives beyond what is offered for intermediate brooms. Most professional brooms are customised through one or two processes: (1) profiling of the player through interview and observation and (2) any special aesthetics and effects, though normally only within the rules of what is allowed for Quidditch games.

(The shop also has a borrow-option, provided that the borrower fills out a firm with a rating that helps Völund refine and develop their brooms. This option is not always available and may be reserved for certain positions and/or levels.)

The shop also imports and sells other broom brands and Quidditch eqiupment.

Völund is run by the trio of Weiland, a skilled broommaker, and a magical engineer (these positions will be up for grabs if the permit goes through). There will also be a need for 1-2 people at the counter. Depending on how the business goes, Völund might start looking for someone to take care of economy/admin stuff, with the hope of expanding the broommaker- and repair sections with larger broommaker- and repair teams (new broommakers will normally start of as trainees in the repair section and the teams otherwise tend to overlap).

All brooms from Völund are marked with the logo: One golden and one silver wing.

Layout
The shop can roughly be divided in three sections.

In the middle is the shop area, where brooms are available on display and for try-outs (no, NOT inside the shop!). On the left is the repairshop, together with a couple of small offices.

On the right, the shop has been furnished as a small café area containing two round tables, each surrounded by a triad of bright red chairs. The area is self-served (Weiland insists that serving should be free) and known for its horrendous coffee. While initially meant as a waiting area, and while some of the stricter staff may shoo people away who are not customers, Weiland happily welcomes anyone who just want to use the place to hang out.

The walls of the coffee area is decorated with the shirts of Weiland's legacy - first the crimson of his old Gryffindor shirt, then the black-and-white shirt from his first taste of professional Quidditch, as second Keeper to Montrose Magpies, then the bright yellow-and-black of the Wimbourne Wasps, as he was bought in as their primary Keeper. Finally, the dark navy of Scotland's national team.

What purpose will this shop serve other than selling things and being the home of your character? Why would people want to RP there just for fun?

To my memory, there has never been a broom shop on the forum, although there has been plenty enthusiasm around Quidditch. As a long-term OOC fan of the IC Quidditch games, I want to help inspire creativity in writing things Quidditch related!

The purpose of the shop is manifold:

1) Inspire fun writing for all things Quidditch related
2) Inspire growing a community of Quidditch enthusiasts and professionals
3) Challenge ideas connected to the IC and OOC popularisation of some Quidditch positions over others
4) Challenge the perception of speed as the most desireable Quidditch attribute
5) Providing jobs, and hiring students to help during summer months, thus contributing to the community
6) Somewhere to drink coffee in cool surroundings
7) Help Zak's need for constant socialisation

Zak's daughter is currently going to Hogwarts. She will be helping in the shop during summer.

(The name Völund is the Old Norse variation of Weiland's name, which is usually spelled Wayland in the English language, referencing the mythological smith that was hamstrung by the king and imprisoned on an island. However, Völund/Wayland forged himself a pair of wings and flew away. This was my symbolic backdrop for making Zak's character when he was a student, and has been a leading star for his plotline.)
