CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character name: Robbie Foxglove

Previous and/or Current Character(s) if applicable: Alder and Holly Foxglove, Penélope Weber, Parker McCormick, Ophelia Marquis, Apollo Undergrove

Character age: 23

Character education:
Junior Healer at St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries - July ‘66 until present day
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - Slytherin -  Sep. ‘62 - graduation in ‘66
Lead Nurse - 7th year, Nurse - 4th - 6th year
Slytherin prefect - 6th & 7th year
Slytherin Beater
Gokstad Academy - Njord - Sept. ‘58 - Feb. ‘62

Strength and weaknesses: The insecure boy has grown into a man that lacks confidence, though you’d never be able tell. After years of hiding behind a sunny facade and thriving in his own shadow, Robbie knows exactly which mask to wear to suit the occasion.

Though he isn’t one to dwell on past mistakes, Robbie has a long memory. No favour will slip by unnoticed, no slight will be forgotten. He is comfortable inside crowds and can easily match any level of noise, but he still deems private moments with special people precious. Once earned, Robbie’s loyalty will outlast even the most intense heartbreak.

Physical description: The face that stares back from the mirror has the same dark, curly hair and warm brown eyes than the one Hogwarts would have last seen. These days he’s on the gaunt side, an unfortunate side effect of working too many hours without any respite, but the easy smile and confident stride more than makes up for it.

Personality: Laid back and pleasant, Robbie doesn’t have a lack of friends. Though the instinct to protect kicks in very easily, he also knows how to let go and just have fun. Many of his hobbies have fallen to the wayside over the years but he still paints very regularly and, in lieu of being part of a quidditch team, he’s taken up muggle football and running.

Though Robbie’s easy way of doing things seems to stretch throughout all aspect of his life, he is actually painfully aware of exactly how far he can push things to still stay safe. The tragedy and loss in his teenage years has cultivated a strong sense of self preservation and because of this, Robbie Foxglove won’t take a risk unless he is sure he’ll get a win out of it. A few people in his life has also pointed out that he knows exactly how to make you love him most.

Hopes and dreams. Why are you teaching at Hogwarts?: Five years ago, Robbie walked away from a dreadful situation in anger and in the process, sacrificed precious time with his family. In the years since he’d managed to maintain some sort of involvement in their lives, even if it was only the odd weekend with Holly, or a hastily arranged lunch with Alder. In the time away his own romantic relationship thrived and he  managed to become a halfway decent Healer too.

It was only in the last year, with his brother suddenly signing up for the Ministry and veering down a road Robbie never would have expected, that he realised he didn’t know what was going on in the two younger kids’ lives any more. These days Robbie’s  estranged older sister saw more of Holly than he had done in years, and Alder had built the type of life which, in all honesty, made their older brother worry.

It is Robbie’s hope that by securing a position at Hogwarts, he’d manage to find a way back into their lives. Holly still has a few years left at the school and with Alder working in Hogsmeade for part of the week, he’d be able to spend time with the both of them.

On a side note, a few years at Hogwarts would enhance his skills as a Healer and allow him a little bit of time for independent study.

Biography (500 words minimum. There is never such a thing as too much.):

When looking back at a life, it is only natural to try and find some sort of pattern in the years that pass. Some people like to keep journals to track everything that happens, collecting snippets of their years in the pages to serve as some sort of legacy. Others prefer to reminisce at their leisure, looking back at the years with a sense of misplaced nostalgia. For an unlucky few, one event immediately jumps out, leaving their time irrevocably divided in two parts – everything that happened before, and all of what came after.

For Robbie Foxglove, the significant years seem to clump together in lumps of three. Sometimes there were more months in a cluster, sometimes less, but more often that not, those moments of importance could be find nestled in amongst thirty six months that belonged together, somehow.

The years with the greatest contrast stretched from the late fifties into the sixties. He’d only been a boy at the start of it all, a little bit younger than ten and with the innocent joviality that youth so often brought. His days were marked by the tides because he lived on an island and there was nothing quite as wonderful as taking a small boat out to the skerry on a warm, sunny day. The salty water would cling to his ankles and turn his already curly hair unruly. Sometimes he’d carry an easel and paint, sometimes a basket, but he would never be alone. His sister sometimes went with him and at other times, his younger brother Alder. Soon, the promise of another sister turned his life into a waiting game, one which he lost. His mother left them just two days after bringing new life into the world and with that, his father’s attention dwindled as well. It felt like a short eternity of mourning and scraping that followed even though in reality, it had only been two years. By the end of it, it was only the four kids and, on a bitter Christmas morning not too long after that, Robbie realised that it had only been three for much longer than he realised, because Willow had left with her heart long before her feet had carried her out of the children’s home. There was no more salty water and no more skerry - only the rattling sound of his younger sister’s breath as she fought for her life in a narrow bed upstairs in the children’s home.

The next three years arrived in Pene Weber’s wake. Miss Kurtz, as she had once been known, had taken the three of them away from the home, and England and everything that had tied them to their old lives. Robbie hadn’t been able to stay with the others but instead had been shipped off to school in a country too cold for words, to learn magic in a language he couldn’t understand and to try and make friends by speaking to them in another which was even more indecipherable. It was three years of bruised knuckles, split lips and too many D’s scribbled over his work until one day, the girls started noticing him and with it, some help finally arrived. Robbie soon learned that if you had the Latin down, the Norwegian didn’t matter quite so much. In those days he rarely used words to speak anyway, instead opting for hidden kisses with the girls, and public fights with the boys.

The next three years had been the best of all of them, taking their place as some sort of golden age in Robbie’s life. England had lured his aunt back with its promise of leisure and fame, allowing the family to settle in Hogsmeade. Robbie, who was still slightly behind, didn’t stay that way for long because at his new school, they spoke English and things weren’t covered in snow year round. In three short years he broke a heart, found his own and also discovered a boy he couldn’t live without. It was three years of laughter, tragedy, kisses, Quidditch, learning and long hours spent in a Hogsmeade house with too many staircases that all seemed to lead into the sanctuary of one downstairs basement. At the end of it all, the beautifully woven spell was shattered by a single confession of unthinkable betrayal and Robbie left home, separating himself from the three people in his life that he loved the most.

Perhaps it was no wonder, then, that the next years unravelled at the seams, losing the familiar pattern of three as it slipped through his fingers. It wasn’t all a waste, of course. Long hours in the hospital meant that he became a better Healer each day, while stolen moments with Ed helped them stay on their own path. The threads that had tied him to Alder and Holly had stretched and frayed, though, leaving him completely disconnected from his family for the first time in his life. It took a strange family dinner to rattle him into wanting a change and so Robbie set out to change his own life by trusting the man in his life to hold onto their future.

Three years, his lucky (or unlucky) number, and the exact amount of time his sister had left at school. Robbie had no idea if this was a mistake or if life would snatch something else from him while he worked on making the next thirty six months the best they could be, but he had to try.

SAMPLE ROLEPLAY
(Please respond to to this in third person past tense. Do not write the other characters' reactions. Only your own.)

It was the largest office in Hogwarts and, perhaps to students and newcomers, the most intimidating. The shelves were filled with various odds and ends, with a place of honor for the Sorting Hat, and the walls held all the portraits of past Headmasters and Headmistresses.

In the middle of the room sat a large desk. Everything was in order, for the current occupant had always despised a messy desk. It was the sign of a messy mind, and she had always favored neatness.

A clock sat on the desk, which currently showed the time to be 2:05. The meeting was supposed to begin at 2:00 precisely.

Along with order, Anneka valued punctuality. She was a very busy woman these days. Even during the summer, she had a number of matters to attend to. Interviewing and hiring staff was only of those matters. The newest potential member of her staff wasn't making a good impression.

She paced the room, black heels clicking against the stone floor. When the door finally opened, Anneka turned, her expression reminiscent of a Russian winter. "You are late."

Explain yourself was what her face said.

Roleplay Response:

The halls of Hogwarts seemed to hum their approval as Robbie wandered down them and towards the office of Headmistress Ivanova. In his mind, they welcomed him back, the cold brick and warm light reminding him of the many walks he took down these very corridors. In reality, though, the slight hum in his ears could just be because of running underground in the dungeons, where there was very little air; the strange pressure and colder air could make anybody’s ears go a little bit wonky.

All in all, it was nice to be back. Though St. Mungo’s had its own charm, only a few places could beat the ambience and presence of the Hogwarts Castle. The dungeons especially had an atmosphere of their very own and since they were his home for four of the best years of his life, Robbie hadn’t been able to resist the urge to dash into their depths before his interview.

He hadn’t been alone down there, though, and the surprise reunion with a very old friend had made him more than a few minutes late for his appointment in the end.

“My apologies, headmistress,” Robbie said as he finally closed her office door behind him and wandered towards her desk. His hair looked more wind swept than usual, though the bright smile and slightly flushed cheeks would tell her he was delighted to see her again. As far his memory served they’d never really spoken, but he was planning on changing that and making a proper impression to boot.

“I bumped into Sir Richard while on my way over here and I can report the tales of his adventures are as long as ever,” he said with a slightly shake of the head, catching the older woman’s eye before extending a hand. “Anyway, thank you so much for your patience.”

With that, Robbie took a seat, feigning readiness for whatever the woman could possibly throw at him.

Magical Strength (pick one): Charms
Magical Weakness (pick one): Conjuring & Summoning

Biography:
Rowan Bartholomew Foxglove was born to Orson and his second wife, Cara, on an unusually clear night in November. Though the boy arrived an entire week early the birth was a calm affair, with several Manx locals joining in the celebrations as Orson welcomed his eldest son into the world. When morning broke Cara drifted into a peaceful sleep as Orson’s eldest daughter kept an eye on the new arrival.

By the time he was a toddler Rowan Bartholomew had made way for Robbie, courtesy of his older sister Willow. Once she started calling him the shortened version, the rest of the family simply followed suit. In those early days she doted on the little boy, allowing him to be her constant companion. Though she had been an only child for so long, she didn’t mind sharing the limelight with her dark-eyed brother. Despite having different mothers, the two siblings were startlingly similar. This made it easy for Willow to take Robbie under her wing, making the two siblings inseparable.

It was two years before Cara fell pregnant again. Alder was also born in the spacious country house, though Orson insisted on accompanying both mother and child to Onchan for observation shortly after. The birth had left Cara dangerously anaemic, a condition that finally claimed her life three years later as she gave birth to Holly, the final member of the Foxglove family.

Though Orson was suddenly alone in taking care of four children, he remained strong. For years after, he was both father and mother to the brood. He earned enough to keep the roof over their heads and left the day-to-day chores to the housekeeper. By this time Willow had completed her NEWTs and though she passed comfortably, she chose to return to the Isle of Man rather than continue with her studies in London. Robbie grew into a fun-loving boy that never tired of the enchantments the island held. Though he remained remarkably close with Willow, he also became fiercely protective of his younger siblings. He always tried to be a source of laughter rather than worry and for some time, the close-knit family managed to keep the tears at bay.

It was only when Orson perished in a tree felling accident that Robbie’s laughter dried up. Suddenly the four children were not only alone, but also in real danger of being split up. For three months, Willow managed to hold things together, acting as legal guardian with the help of an SRC care worker. In the end the burdens of adulthood became too heavy for her young shoulders. Robbie watched his once carefree sister grow tired and frail, straining under the responsibilities that this cruel twist had left her with. When she became moody and withdrawn, so did he. His curly hair became unkempt and though the neighbours made sure that they were fed properly, the weight dropped off him. When Holly fell ill, the three younger children were relocated to the Children’s Home in Hogsmeade. Willow found a job in London. Over the next few months, her visits to Hogsmeade became rarer until they stopped altogether.

It was less than a year later that a ray of hope appeared. Penelope Kurtz, a distant cousin of their mother, arrived at the Children’s Home one warm night in July. She had been researching the wading habits of the Andean flamingo in Bolivia for the past five years. With the political tensions in the region reaching breaking point, she had decided to take a short breather on home soil before continuing her research in Namsos, Norway. Though her travels took her all over the world, Miss Kurtz managed to convince the executor of the Foxglove estate that she would be able to provide a stable life for the three children. The two boys would also be able to enrol at Gokstad Academy once they were old enough.

The opportunity at a fresh start in life came at exactly the right time for Robbie. Over the next three years, the sullen boy changed into a confident teenager who enjoyed his studies and adored his siblings. With his aunt travelling so much of the time, Robbie took it upon himself to keep an eye out for the two younger Foxgloves. His sheer will to thrive in this new set of circumstances fortified him during the first uncertain months at the Academy. He focused on figuring out where his own talents lay and found a way to use them whenever he had the chance. By the time Alder started school, Robbie had become completely self-reliant and encouraged his brother to come to him first if there was trouble. Though he saw less of Holly, he sent regular owls to his baby sister and encouraged her to write whenever she could.

Finally, just after Robbie’s fourteenth birthday, Aunt Penelope announced that they would return to the UK. Her plan was to rent a house in Hogsmeade where she hoped to ‘get a spot of writing done.’ Both Robbie and Alder would transfer to Hogwarts at the beginning of the new school year – something that excited and terrified Robbie in equal measures. The idea of making new friends was nothing short of thrilling, but his studies worried him. Though Robbie had always managed to keep well on top of his classes, he only ever excelled in Charms. In Robbie’s eyes, Charms was by far the most interesting and useful application of magic available to someone his age. The rest of his subjects were of no real interest to him. It would be more than four months until the end of the current school year, more than enough time to fall truly behind in those duller areas of magic.

To remedy all of this, Penelope arranged private tutor sessions for both Robbie and Alder. The Ministry Official that visited the family after their arrival in Hogsmeade approved of these arrangements, yet still suggested Robbie take an extra year to prepare for his OWLs. With this weight lifted, Robbie finally allowed himself to dream about the Hogwarts years that stretched out ahead of him.

Option I:

Thump.

The dull thud reverberated throughout the Dungeon corridors, but Robbie Foxglove was much too preoccupied to notice.

Thump.

It was probably not the best idea to try and knock a dent out of a cauldron in the middle of the Dungeons corridor, but desperate times and all that. This was the third cauldron he’d accidentally damaged this year. The first had somehow sprung an irreparable leak (Robbie still maintained the thing had been jinxed) while the second rusted all over after The Sleakeazy Incident. Even Robbie’s usually effective Scourgify couldn’t eradicate the uncommonly silky patches of oxidation that had settled in the belly of the pewter vessel. And so he was onto his third cauldron now – the very cauldron that had gotten dented after only two weeks. There was no way he would survive asking his aunt for yet another replacement, which is why he was now sat in a dark corridor, his eyes straining in the half-light as he repeatedly struck the inside of the Standard Pewter Size Two with his roommate’s beater bat.

"H-h-hello?"

The voice came out of nowhere. Though it was barely a whisper, it distracted Robbie just long enough for his aim to waiver. The bat missed the cauldron altogether and connected with the boy’s knuckles instead. By some miracle he managed to swallow the string of expletives as he clutched at his throbbing hand.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

“No!” he hollered back, fighting back the tears that were threatening to spill over his cheeks. For a second Robbie wondered whether his aunt would take pity on his injured hand, but then he realised he’d never be able to tell her about this half-baked plan anyway. She’d want to know why the cauldron had gotten dented in the first place and that would just complicate things. No, he would need to come up with another plan altogether.

Swallowing back the last of his anguish he discarded both bath and cauldron with an almighty clang, then moved in the direction of the voice.

“But if you find her, tell her she owes me a new set of knuckles. And a cauldron too.”

Roleplay:
Reply as your character to the following:

Godric Park.

Overhead, the sky was a crisp blue, for once clear of the ever-pervasive spongy clouds and rain. The sun was a lemony-yellow presence, high in the Eastern sky, and in front of it zipped three broomsticks in a straight line, or something very like one. One... two..... three... the boys passed, their shouts of excitement echoing as they chased the snitch, a tiny shimmer reflecting the sunlight.

Far below was another, much smaller broomstick.

It trugged along the ground, hugging close to it like a sluggish choo choo train and occasionally shuttering in protest. This was because said stick was currently being occupied by a very small girl who was tugging upward on the front of it with all her might, trying to coax it into doing what it had been expressly designed NOT to do.

"John, I said wait up!" The tiny girl squealed, giving the broomstick another tug.

Begrudgingly, it drifted upward a foot, and then sank, depositing the troublesome girl safely on the ground. Janey Hurst was not pleased. In a huff, she hopped off the toy safety broom, grabbing it firmly and thrusting it handle first into the turf.

Her brother was such a beast. He NEVER let her play! She folded her arms, seething blue eyes fixing on another figure nearby.  "You!" She barked, much more sharply than she meant to.

"...Do you want to play?"

Roleplay Response:

Robbie loved lazy Hogsmeade days. He was lounging on a park bench, a book in his lap, just soaking in the atmosphere as he waited for his aunt to return with from her errands. While Penelope Kurtz wasn’t a great cook, she made excellent treacle pudding. Any trips to Honeydukes could result in a feast, which is why Robbie had immediately volunteered to help carry the parcels. The last thing he wanted was for her to be too tired to make his favourite dessert.

Fortunately for him, she did not need his help just yet, so she’d left him in Godric Park to read.

It was a glorious sunshine day, with only the slightest breeze and no clouds in sight. Robbie relaxed completely where he sat on the bench, only partially aware of the other children that were taking full advantage of the beautiful day. The book in his lap was brand new and kept Robbie engrossed in its twists… so much so that that he noticed neither the tiny broom nor its owner until she shrieked at him.

"You!"

Robbie’s eyes widened imperceptibly as he looked at the small ball of rage in front of him. She was about Holly’s age and, looking at her now, would probably get on very well with his sister. Unfortunately the youngest Foxglove had stayed at home, which is probably why the next words were directed at him instead of a younger (and more suitable) play mate.

"...Do you want to play?"

Robbie did not want to play. What he wanted was to stay on the bench where he could enjoy the glorious summer afternoon while dreaming about the mouth-watering delight that awaited him once he’d eaten every last bite of his dinner.

Fortunately for the girl, the boy on the bench had spent a lot of time on the outside looking in. On occasion he too wanted to play, only to be told no. And while he could think of better things to do than to babysit someone her size, he could spare ten minutes of his own day to brighten hers.

“Naturally…” he said easily, smiling at the pint-sized princess as he got to his feet, “… but not with that broom of yours. It’s much too small to carry two of us.” With a deft flick of his wrist he replaced the bookmark and left his half-explored adventure on the bench, out of harm’s way.

“How about I teach you a game instead?”

Visiting the Park was always a treat, especially when it was dry out. Robbie knew very well to savour these lazy days in the sun as best he could, because it was bound to rain sooner or later. Today, he was content with lying on his back, just watching the clouds pass high above him. Usually he’d hate doing something so boring, but every now and then a broomstick zipped overhead, which was a novelty. Even when he still lived at home, he rarely saw one of those. Willow liked books a lot more than toys and his father had always been too busy to just fly about. He was much more likely to see a fishing boat than to see a anything of interest in the skies. Even the small broomstick at the back held his interest… especially because it flew so close to ground. From here, he could actually see the elegant twigs that formed the tail of the broom.

It was only as the girl that had been flying about on it spoke to him that he tore his gaze from the toy and got to his feet.

"You!"

She was speaking to him now and Robbie didn’t like it one bit. The face she made was enough to make him want to forget about the broomsticks and run all the way back to his room. He knew that face. Holly made that face whenever she was about to burst into tears.

Robbie hated that face.

He was about to turn around and act on his first instinct when the girl spoke again.

"...Do you want to play?"

“Play?” he asked, swinging back in her direction, despite somehow knowing that all of this might still end in tears. “Do you have toys?”

Hopefully she didn’t just want him to chase her all over. In that case he might as well play with Alder. Just by looking at her, he guessed his brother could run a lot faster than this girl.

Also, Alder never made the face.
