Biography:
Arlene May gave birth to Rosamund Ruth May on Christmas day, 1951, eleven years after having her first child. Both Arlene and her husband, Rex, were busy people and they worked a lot to support the family. Because of this, Rosa Ruth was mostly raised by the middle child and squib, Constance 'Annie' May. Annie wasn't much of a parent though, being only nine when Rosamund was born.

Even though Annie tried her best, Rosamund became envious of her friends. She chalked her sister's failures up to her lack of magical ability although in reality if Annie hadn't been a squib she would have attended Hogwarts leaving no one to care for Rosie.

Rosamund's childhood was very different from either of her sisters'. During the times when Annie was away on rare visits to see Esther or busy with school Rosie stayed with her Aunt and Uncle. Ruth and Roy May were much more prejudiced than Rosamund's parents, and their pureblood elitist ideas rubbed off on Rosie.

When Annie turned seventeen, the two of them (Rosamund and Annie) moved into an apartment on Diagon Alley. Both Esther and Constance had been raised in Birmingham around muggles, and barely spared a passing thought toward blood status. But living around other wizards, combined with Annie's subpar parenting has given Rosie a different perspective.

The Mays are a little known pureblood family. They were once powerful, rich, and influential. But several generations later, after poor money management, and a gambling problem, most people have never heard of them. But Rosamund is determined to change that.

She dreams of joining Yarborough and living in a mansion. Hosting dinner parties in fancy gowns and dancing in lavish chandelier-lit ballrooms. Marrying rich and engaging in family politics. And in her mind, that all starts by making connections with other pureblood eleven-year-olds.

Rosamund Ruth is nothing like either of her older sisters. She's not quiet and insecure like Annie or sad, boring, and bitter like her oldest sister Esther. Rosie Ruth is highly emotional and highly opinionated. Easily excitable but a crybaby. But that doesn't mean she's fragile.

Rosie stands up against anything and everything she thinks is wrong (although sometimes her distinctions between right and wrong are questionable) even if it brings her to tears, which it almost always does. She can be blunt at times although she does try to be kind. Rosamund is rather intense but if that's your cup of tea you'll find she's a fiercely loyal friend. (Sometimes too loyal, it can be difficult to cut things off with her.)

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

A tiny whisper echoed through the corridor of the dungeon and Rosie whipped her head around towards the noise, every muscle tensed (to fight, obviously! Mays don't run!). That was the last straw! As of today, Rosie officially hated the dungeons.

A girl's voice called out from down the hall, asking for... Emma Birch? Who was Emma Birch? Maybe an upperclassman? Rosamund had never heard of anyone by that name. She hoped it wasn't someone she was supposed to know. It wasn't her fault no one had  told her all the stories about Hogwarts the other kids knew. It was the fault of her stupid squib sister, and her parents for not caring about her social life.

Instilled with newfound indignant confidence, Rosie marched down the corridor and around the corner to come face to face with another first year girl she vaguely recognized. She put on her best friendly, but smug, expression and subconsciously straightened her skirt.

"Emma Birch? You think you're going to find her down here? Only greasy Slytherins hang out in the dungeons."

do you remember the twenty-first night of september?
love was changing the minds of pretenders while chasing the clouds away
our hearts were ringing in the key that our souls were singing
as we danced in the night, remember how the stars stole the night away
