Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name: Mara Laine Cole

Birthday: July 16, 1952

Hometown: Hogsmeade

Bloodline: Halfblood

Magical Strength (pick one): Divination

Magical Weakness (pick one): Transfiguration

Year (pick two): First, Second

Biography:
According to Mara, she has had a fairly normal childhood. She went to daycare and ballet lessons. She has a lot of friends, and her best friend in the whole world is Addie. They do everything together. She has four older siblings. Her dad's an Auror, and her mom's a ghost. All the normal things.

At least that's what Mara thought was normal. As she got older, she learned that most people not only didn't have ghosts for parents, but they were shocked and sometimes even scared by it. Mara's not sure why, because her mom isn't scary at all. But then people would talk about death, and Mara started to ask about how her mom died. But the rest of her family would quickly change the subject. If she pressed, they'd just say she was sick, or there was an accident. The different reasons were conflicting, but her family always got uncomfortable by the asking, so she eventually stopped. She supposed it didn't matter anyway.

Mara is more focused on spending time with her friends and finally getting to go to Hogwarts after seeing all her siblings head there one by one. Her only sibling at Hogwarts is her sister, Dahlia, who doesn't really like her very much. Mara doesn't really know why. She has a lot of questions about her family and the mystery surrounding her mother's death, but she keeps all those thoughts pushed back in her head. She'd rather enjoy her time than worry about those things.

Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff Or Adeline's house

Personality:
Mara has a sunny personality, but is rather quiet so can sometimes easily sit in a room unnoticed if she wants to be. And sometimes she does, especially if she's working on writing a new story. It really helps her to just observe other people and get ideas for her stories.

If it's nice and sunny outside, you can almost guarantee Mara will be out there either writing in her notebook or simply resting and enjoying the sunshine. To be fair, she can be found outside in most weather, whether it's dancing in the rain or making snow angels. But her favorite weather is bright and sunny.

Appearance:
Mara is on the shorter side with dark brunette hair and blue eyes. She's got a slender figure and generally doesn't care much about what others think of her appearance. She prefers to wear flowy skirts and dresses. They're much easier to dance in. And prettier. It isn't terribly uncommon to see her hair a bit of a mess.

→ SAMPLE ROLEPLAY.
You come across one of these posts on the site. Please select one & reply as your character. Remember, you can only roleplay your own character's actions, not Evangeline's or Hugh's.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

Mara had been making a point to explore the castle as much as she could. She wanted to know every nook and cranny of it. She preferred to explore with her friends, but they were all in class and she was bored.

So she found herself in the dungeons. It wasn't particularly her favorite place from what she could tell of it. It was dark and cold, and her footsteps echoed throughout the halls. But perhaps she could use the creepy area in one of her future stories.

"H-h-hello?" Mara barely heard the voice. It was quiet, and she wasn't even sure who the girl was talking to.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

Mara turned the corner to see the girl about her age. "No, I'm Mara Cole!" She grinned at the girl. "Who's Emma Birch?" She was pretty sure she hadn't heard it at the sorting ceremony, so not a first year. But perhaps Emma was an older student.

"What's your name?"

Biography: (100 words minimum.)
Mara had an unfortunate start to life, as her birth caused her mother’s death. She has only ever known her mother to be a ghost and figures some mothers are just like that. She is closest to her father, as most of her siblings have already left for Hogwarts and her mother teaches there as well. Her sister Dahlia is still at home but doesn’t seem to like her very much. Mara figures that’s just what sisters are like, too.

With her siblings and mother not always around and her father working, Dahlia has spent most of her time at the Daycare. She enjoys playing with the other children there and doesn’t realize how different her family is from most others.

Roleplay:
Reply as your character to the following:

Godric Park.

Overhead, the sky was a crisp blue, for once clear of the ever-pervasive spongy clouds and rain. The sun was a lemony-yellow presence, high in the Eastern sky, and in front of it zipped three broomsticks in a straight line, or something very like one. One... two..... three... the boys passed, their shouts of excitement echoing as they chased the snitch, a tiny shimmer reflecting the sunlight.

Far below was another, much smaller broomstick.

It trugged along the ground, hugging close to it like a sluggish choo choo train and occasionally shuttering in protest. This was because said stick was currently being occupied by a very small girl who was tugging upward on the front of it with all her might, trying to coax it into doing what it had been expressly designed NOT to do.

"John, I said wait up!" The tiny girl squealed, giving the broomstick another tug.

Begrudgingly, it drifted upward a foot, and then sank, depositing the troublesome girl safely on the ground. Janey Hurst was not pleased. In a huff, she hopped off the toy safety broom, grabbing it firmly and thrusting it handle first into the turf.

Her brother was such a beast. He NEVER let her play! She folded her arms, seething blue eyes fixing on another figure nearby.  "You!" She barked, much more sharply than she meant to.

"...Do you want to play?"

Roleplay Response:
Mara had been extra excited about going to the park today! She liked playing outside and hoped there’d be other kids her age there. Maybe even some of her daycare friends!

“Dahlia, let’s play ballet!”

Dahlia huffed at her. “That’s for kids.” Dahlia was too old to play with her, she always said. Mara frowned but decided to play on her own anyway. There wasn’t any music playing, but in Mara’s head, there was.

She danced around the park on her tip-toes. She always enjoyed the pictures of the people in tutus. She even had a ballerina on a music box that spun around! She twirled in a manner that she thought was elegant, but in reality, was very much not.

“You!”

Mara stopped mid-spin and looked at the girl who had yelled at her.

“...Do you want to play?”

Mara grinned. “Sure! Do you know how to play ballet?” She asked excitedly.
