Elsewhere Accepted / St. George's | shop permit
« on: 08/04/2020 at 02:11 »
SHOPKEEPER PERMIT
You must have applied as an Elsewhere character before completing this permit.

Shop name: St. George’s
Shop Type: Magical creatures' reserve
Location: Elsewhere? (I briefly talked to Marina about this). If it’s not possible then I’m cool with wherever you guys pick.
Subforum?Yes
Short Description (50 words max): Magical creature’s reserve focused on research and rehabilitation.
Long Description (200 words min): Founded over 100 years ago by Selene Argyros, originally as a sanctuary when her ever-growing collection of strays became too large for her personal home (and started to roam around the neighborhood), this reserve has been transformed into a center for both research and rehabilitation. Its main focuses are the studying of species, conservation efforts, rescue and rehabilitation, and relocation of creatures.

St. George’s lies in the heart of the woods in Sevenoaks, England, with intricate spells woven on the edges of the property to dissuade muggles from wandering in. Every creature’s enclosure scattered across the woodlands has been magically altered to accommodate to each species’ need, be it by changing the biome or by applying undetectable extension charms. Among the facilities, one of the most notable (and somewhat recent) addition is the dragon egg hatchery for the purpose of conservation efforts among the rarer species.

Research work occurs in mostly one or two ways: either with a controlled number of creatures in a controlled environment for more specific goals, or by paying expenses for magizoologists to conduct their research in the species’ natural habitat.

This reserve operates under the belief that, among its rehabilitation work, a creature should always be returned to the wild whenever possible, and when not, it will be lifelong cared for either at St. George’s or another location.

What purpose will this shop serve other than selling things and being the home of your character? Why would people want to RP there just for fun? Several players already have characters who work there as magizoologists and there’s plenty opportunities for more people to join in several different positions like on-site healers, receptionists, etc. Students could also visit or apply for an internship there. It’s definitely got the potential for some interesting dynamics (ft. a few dragons.)

CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character name:Felicia Navarro

Previous and/or Current Character(s) if applicable:
Felicia, Juan Cruz and Santiago Navarro.

Character age: 20

Character education:
Hogwarts- Ravenclaw ‘53
Unspeakable in training- ‘54- present
Private studies in magizoology and acrobatics

Strength and weaknesses (details please): (in personality)

Physical description:
Felicia is easy to spot by a cloud of hair transfigured white that refuses to be completely tame and the scars of an old burn covering most of her left arm; and yet she’s easy to lose sight of with her 5 feet of height and quick, quiet steps. Big, round blue eyes are transparent in the best of days, showcasing fleeting emotions as they are felt, uncaring about who sees them. What once was a thin, boyish body has been covered with lean muscle and the occasional tattoo- with plans to get more.
She always looks innocent, even when she’s not, with a gentle smile always ready on soft lips, with smudged eyeliner and the occasional stray drop of dried ink staining her cheek.
The observant eye may catch a dragon tooth necklace around her neck and a white ring on her left hand that she twirls as she thinks.

Personality (nice, rude, funny etc. Paragraph please.):
Always ready to laugh and even more ready to smile, Felicia Navarro manages to be intense and relaxed at the same time. While she possesses a laser focus on the subjects that interest her at any certain moment, she’s also fickle in everything except magizoology, and might abandon projects, ideas and even sentences as they leave her mouth if something else catches her attention. Willing to help but unwilling to allow herself to be helped, she rejects stereotypes, systems and rules if they make no sense for her. Felicia flows through life, easily adapting to quick changes without having been given warning: if one solution doesn’t work, she’ll find twenty others to test, taking challenges with a smile and without frustration. But her fluid nature makes her unreliable at times, forgetful or childish. She refuses to stay still on a place for too long or let people or circumstances cage her. Her body is usually as flexible as herself, with the exception of her scarred arm, which still aches and feels stiff on occasion.

Hopes and dreams. Why are you teaching at Hogwarts?:
Teacher figures have been important in her life and she wishes to help guiding students into understanding that creatures, even when big and dangerous, act the way they act for certain reasons. Spreading knowledge about what’s generally regarded as wild and unpredictable and showing the truth behind myths regarding creatures are very important subjects for her. While she doesn’t dream to become a teacher for life and will likely treat it as a side job, she’s still eager to help shape young minds and teach them critical thinking.

Biography (500 words minimum. There is never such a thing as too much.):
Death was the first of her teachers from the moment she took her first breath of air. Death, with long, reaching fingers claimed a mother she never knew and gave the first lesson: life is fragile, all is fleeting. Respect it, enjoy it, but don’t hold it too tight between your hands. It will all go at some point.

Still young, her second teacher, and perhaps the most important for years and years, was her father. When she could walk, she walked right next to him, and then ran next to him, surrounded by scales and feathers and fangs, never once stopping to consider how it might be dangerous, how she might be unprepared. Her eyes were too wide and her ears too eager to listen: be passionate, explore, learn more and more and more. Take your time to understand the world and the beautiful creatures in it.

If her hair always smelled of smoke, if she couldn’t get rid of grass stains on her knees, if she was stared at in disapproval by family members, Felicia didn’t notice. She was running too fast to stop and take a look.

Hogwarts came later, with different sounds and scent and people, and enough teachers to keep her sleepless mind busy, thoughts tangling and overlapping in asymmetrical loops. For the classes she cared about she read and practiced until sleep took her, without even asking her for her opinion first; the classes she was less interested in only got her lack of attention. What she didn’t learn in that time was how to feel guilty about it.

Names got under her skin and so lessons that were engraved into the bones of her ribs, so with every breath she took they would pulse with bright light, so she wouldn’t forget: everyone has different needs. Stop, and pay attention. Running all the time gets you out of breath too soon. Sleep better. Eat better. Take care of yourself. Some questions are more important than the answers. Some family you get to pick, to collect them as you go.

And then her first teacher came back along with fire to sear the first of her lessons on her skin again, least she would stop thinking about it for long enough to forget. Fire came and scarred her arm, death came back with the quietest hint of an apology and when it left, it took her father with it. The absence tore at her heart leaving a gaping void behind. Rafael was something to fill it with, and his lessons doubled: how to mourn, how to hurt, how to heal. How to recognize signs of trauma and deal with them. How to take the time and space you need, how to prepare teas to help you sleep, how to make salves that heal burns. How to handle crises.

And then she graduated, but that didn’t mean Felicia would stop listening to the lessons that unfurled in front of her face, and with each step into the unknown she tapped her fingertips to the beat them: this is how you pack your bags, join a circus and see the world you’re so hungry to see.

And then: this is how to come back, how buy a house, remodel it and decorate it. This is how you take something in ruins and your best friend and turn it into a home. This is how you harvest honey and make marmalade and ice cream.

And then: this is how to follow in your father’s footsteps, how to study the creatures he showed you how to love, how to start working in a reserve and smile even when you get a face full of quills.

And then: this is how you get a second job doing something you never thought you would. This is how you keep your mind busy with secrets and oddities and spend two times a week bent over a cluttered desk with your best friend.

And then.

SAMPLE ROLEPLAY
(Please respond to to this in third person past tense. Do not write the other characters' reactions. Only your own.)

It was the largest office in Hogwarts and, perhaps to students and newcomers, the most intimidating. The shelves were filled with various odds and ends, with a place of honor for the Sorting Hat, and the walls held all the portraits of past Headmasters and Headmistresses.

In the middle of the room sat a large desk. Everything was in order, for the current occupant had always despised a messy desk. It was the sign of a messy mind, and she had always favored neatness.

A clock sat on the desk, which currently showed the time to be 2:05. The meeting was supposed to begin at 2:00 precisely.

Along with order, Anneka valued punctuality. She was a very busy woman these days. Even during the summer, she had a number of matters to attend to. Interviewing and hiring staff was only of those matters. The newest potential member of her staff wasn't making a good impression.

She paced the room, black heels clicking against the stone floor. When the door finally opened, Anneka turned, her expression reminiscent of a Russian winter. "You are late."

Explain yourself was what her face said.

Roleplay Response:
”You are late.”

Felicia’s face twisted into an apologetic look, the expression ruined somewhat by the dirt smudge across her nose. She knew she was late and it hadn’t been in her plans; she had ran through hallways and climbed stairwells skipping a step and she had tried her best to be on time. And yet, here she was.

“Miss Ivanova, yes. Sorry, I know, I… got sidetracked,” she took a deep breath, ran pale fingers stained with paint and ink through white, wild hair and elaborated further: “there was a bird. Little thing, chirping miserably on the ground, way too young to be left alone. Couldn’t even fly yet. So I tried to locate its nest but that took longer than I thought it would and then I was crawling under a bush trying to convince the little thing that I wasn’t trying to harm it and-” She waved a hand in front of her face, as if to push her thoughts away.

“To sum up, I’m very sorry, the bird is safe, this won’t happen again. Me being late, I mean, I can’t control wild animals. I can’t really control my own cat- really smart creatures, you know?” She shifted on her place, absently biting on her lip. “This isn’t the best first impression for a job, is it?”

I’ll send Neka the plans briefly <3

Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.

Name:
Felicia Navarro

Birthday:
December 21st 1935

Hometown:
Victoria, British Columbia, Canada- recently moved to Cork, Ireland.

Bloodline:
Pureblood

Magical Strength (pick one):
Transfiguration

Magical Weakness (pick one):
Divination

Year (pick two):
Fourth (preferably) or Third

Biography:
Felicia’s birth was surrounded by tragedy, her mother dying within minutes of bringing her only child to the world. Her father then, certain that his daughter would need all of the luck and happiness in the world, chose her name, and raised her to be a carefree, if not often excitable and reckless girl.

Being the daughter of Francisco Navarro, an enthusiastic dragonologist, Felicia not only grew up with a highly inquisitive mind, but also with a certain sense of fearlessness for the big, wild things with sharp teeth, a behaviour encouraged by her curious nature, and a devastatingly strong need to understand things. While her father doesn’t want his only child to get hurt, he still encourages her instinct to discover and know the world around her, to the point of having taken her to work near dragons several times- with all of the necessary safety precautions, of course.

While she was born and spent most of her life in Canada, her father recently accepted a position in Ireland, prompting their small family to leave friends and connections behind to start anew in a whole other continent, with new people and a new school.

Her extended family consists of a lot of loud, male cousins and uncles, and a few fussing aunts- who are absolutely horrified every time she appears wearing trousers and covered in dirt- who she sees roughly once a year; it was during one of these family reunions that she dressed as a boy to be able to go swimming with her cousins, much to her father’s baffled amusement- and her aunts’ horrified surprise- when they found out. After the incident, her cousins still introduce her as “our cousin Félix” to this day, a nickname she eventually grew to love, but is only comfortable by being called so by either family or a very close friend.

The lack of reprimands from her father on this incident caused a quiet, unspoken rejection towards the both of them from the more conservative members of the family, a fact that she’s painfully aware of, and tries not to think about often, otherwise she gets vaguely frustrated and certainly gloomy.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request:
Ravenclaw.

Personality:
Described as either as brilliant or absolutely insane, Felicia is cheerful, friendly, and a bit clumsy at occasions. If anything catches her attention, she tends to focus a hundred percent on the object of her curiosity, to the point of ignoring everything else around her- and that’s a big point on her personality, a strong sense of curiosity, that’s it, often going on tangents in conversations or possessing an almost nonexistent sense of self-preservation in front of her desire to know.

(This is a girl who allowed herself to be bitten several times by a poisonous snake just so she could experience firsthand the symptoms. She spent the whole summer in the hospital afterwards, keeping a journal on her reactions and progress. Her desire to acquire knowledge and understanding on whatever her object of study happens to be is just too strong. Please, someone do save this girl from herself.

While knowing she can come out a bit too intense to people who don’t know her, she doesn’t particularly mind- actually, she’s not the most self-conscious person you will meet, embarrassment? Shame? Who has time for that? Certainly not this girl, she’s too busy for feeling humiliated, she’s already out there, doing great things- or probably getting maimed in the name of research.

Regarding other people, she’s self-aware enough to try and avoid bothering them too much if she knows they’re not particularly interested into whatever she’s saying or doing, but enjoys nevertheless being social, even joking around- her particular brand of humor tends to include several puns and word plays that only she finds funny-; in general, as long as she likes the person, she’ll like spending time with them or help them- while being mindful not to neglect her research that much.

Appearance:
Short, slim, with a very expressive face- she cannot lie to save her life, nor she feels inclined to do so- and a handful of small scars acquired over the course of her ‘experiments’; the most noticeable being a short one on the corner of her lips.

Her light blue eyes are always round and alert, either blinking too much or too less, and her hair used to be dark brown- until, while being the test subject for one of her cousin’s transfiguration exploring on Summer, it was turned an odd shade of silvery-white. She laughed it out and stuck with it all summer, and when someone asked if she wanted it fixed, she just shrugged and said she would roll with it.

While Felicia doesn’t particularly rebel against traditional feminine clothing, the fact remains that there’s a certain lack of female role models in her life, and, well, pants are just a more sensible option for hiking than skirts, aren’t they? This comes at odds with her taste for make-up, in which she finds a (safe) outlet for creativity and experimenting with colors- a couple of times, she could be seen wearing her cousins’ clothes, while still wearing dramatic eyeliner, trying to define which one of two plants was the poisonous one, and which one was the one who reacted by exploding if exposed to water.

Word on the street maintains that she looks better than some boys in a suit.

Option I:
“Emma Birch?” Felicia answered distractedly, walking down the halls “No, I’m Felicia.”

Potions class had been proving intense, and while the professor had answered more of her questions, she still had a ton more- mostly about the effects of polyjuice potion when used with a hair sample from an animal, but, as the professor had informed her, that was a peculiar tangent and not quite the topic for the class. Felicia still hoped she could make an appointment with the professor out of class hours, and have her questions answered- either that or find a good book or article on the subject- and was still writing her questions on the margins of her parchment while she walked.

Eventually- barely avoiding tripping over her own robes in her focus on the paper- she rose her head, looking at the younger girl in the eye. It was a bit late, and as far as she knew none of the first or second years had potions class at this hour- but well, maybe she was visiting a friend or… exploring the dungeons. Or something.

Vaguely aware of the ink stains on her hands and face, she offered the girl a smile, “Who’s Emma Birch? A friend of yours?” and then, without missing a beat, “also, you won’t happen to know how to get to the Great Hall, do you? I’ve been walking around for ten minutes, I always manage to get lost in the dungeons…”

(This is a girl that spent a summer in the hospital after allowing herself to be bitten by a rare poisonous snake because sure, she had read about what the poison caused and well, most articles she could find were on the effects on animals, but did anyone know how it affected humans? Was there an obscure treaty somewhere she could not find? You don’t understand, she just had to know.)

While she was born and spent most of her life in Canada, her father recently accepted a position in Ireland, prompting their small family to leave friends and connections behind to start anew in a whole other continent.

Her extended consists of a lot of loud, male cousins and uncles, and a few fussing aunts who are absolutely horrified every time she appears wearing trousers and covered in dirt- it’s not that she dislikes dresses, it’s just trousers are so much more functional- who she sees roughly once a year; it was during one of these family reunions that she dressed as a boy to be able to go swimming with her cousins, much to her father’s baffled amusement- and her aunts’ horrified surprise- when they found out. After the incident, her cousins still introduce her as “our cousin Félix” to this day, and the lack of reprimands from her father caused a quiet, unspoken rejection towards the both of them from the more conservative members of the family.

Not one easily flustered or embarrassed, Felicia is often cheerful and friendly-even if she can come as too intense during first meetings- and most would put her right in the line between the brilliant and the absolutely mad.

Roleplay:
Reply as your character to the following:

Godric Park.

Overhead, the sky was a crisp blue, for once clear of the ever-pervasive spongy clouds and rain. The sun was a lemony-yellow presence, high in the Eastern sky, and in front of it zipped three broomsticks in a straight line, or something very like one. One... two..... three... the boys passed, their shouts of excitement echoing as they chased the snitch, a tiny shimmer reflecting the sunlight.

Far below was another, much smaller broomstick.

It trugged along the ground, hugging close to it like a sluggish choo choo train and occasionally shuttering in protest. This was because said stick was currently being occupied by a very small girl who was tugging upward on the front of it with all her might, trying to coax it into doing what it had been expressly designed NOT to do.

"John, I said wait up!" The tiny girl squealed, giving the broomstick another tug.

Begrudgingly, it drifted upward a foot, and then sank, depositing the troublesome girl safely on the ground. Janey Hurst was not pleased. In a huff, she hopped off the toy safety broom, grabbing it firmly and thrusting it handle first into the turf.

Her brother was such a beast. He NEVER let her play! She folded her arms, seething blue eyes fixing on another figure nearby.  "You!" She barked, much more sharply than she meant to.

"...Do you want to play?"

Roleplay Response:
Felicia bit her lip, scanning the ground eagerly; dad and her had been visiting her favourite uncle, and after lunch was had, they grownups shoo’ed her to the park outside to play with other kids for a little while, after a making her promise to try and avoid trouble while.

She’d snickered at that, but knowing that sure, often she did found herself in strange situations, tried to steer away from any possible sort of trouble, and decided to use her time to try and gather the biggest amount of four-leaf clovers she could- she’d read somewhere that they brought good luck, and had been wanting to braid them into a crown for her dad to wear every time he was stuck at his research.

He’d probably know a spell to keep it from withering, too.

So lost was on her own world that when a voice barked at her, she had to blink and look around to make sure the tiny girl was talking- yelling?- at her.

“Uh,” she floundered a bit, tearing her eyes from the ground, “play? Sure!” she smiled, before walking up to the girl and taking a seat near her, allowing the clovers to fall form her arms and to the ground, “I’m making a clover-crown!” She proudly explained, “You want to make one with me?”
