THE MATRIARCHAL LINE

Those in the matriarchal line hold the highest positions of power and influence within the family, but one must remember that with power comes great responsibility. They help to assist the Mambo in protecting the family as well as their Vodou faith, and the adults often dedicate their time to being mentors and teachers to the younger generation that too must learn the faith, their traditions, and their trade to ensure the family's survival.

ONYEKA ADIYA
THE MAMBO
Onyeka Adiya Belizaire is the Matriarch and Mambo of the Belizaire family. She is in her mid-fifties and resides in a large wooden cottage hand built by her late husband in the forests of Somerset, not far from the family temple.

She is stern but fair and a devout pacifist. Loves nature.

FC: Eartha Kitt. NPC.

TROGON COTTAGE

Named after the native bird of Haiti, Trogon Cottage is situated on the outskirts of the forest that houses the Belizaire Temple, allowing the mambo's first born and her family to carry out their duties with ease.

Inhabitants:   ESPÉRANCE NADIYO (mother)
                          Francillion Anodi (Father)
                          Pharah Ophazi
                          Toussaint Laurent
                          Victoire Ezne Belizaire
                          Lilou FRANCESKA

              PETS:   THREAD SNAKES (TOUSSAINT)
                          A BAT (VICTOIRE)
                          2 GOATS (LILOU)

Espérance Nadiyo, 38, first in line

Espérance is first in line to become the family mambo and is highly praised by the community. Her intuition is impressive as well as her generosity, often making her the light their family turns to in times of darkness. She feels most herself when surrounded by nature and carries with her an exceptional moral compass.

FC: Yasmin Warsame. NPC.
Francillion Anodi, 41

Francillion (nee. Ironsi) is Espérance's husband and is a humble herbologist and specialise in the cultivation of crops. He was born in Nigeria and is quiet, introspective, and his wife’s greatest supporter as well as a devoted father figure to his own children as well as their cousins. He is happiest at home working the fields and forests, often sending relatives to sell their crops in near by markets.

FC: Ger Duany. NPC.
Pharah Ophazi, age 14

Pharah is a Slytherin at Hogwarts and second in line, behind her Mother Espérance, to become Mambo. Like her mother, she has an exceptional moral compass, but often follows her head valuing logic and rationale rather than her heart. Her greatest fear is not being able to fill the shoes and continue the legacy her mother will leave behind.

FC: Riley Montana. Reserved.
Toussaint Laurent, age 12

Toussaint is a Gryffindor at Hogwarts School and Espérance’s oldest son. He is closest to his cousin Cupidot and spends more time at his aunt Séverine’s home than his own. This resulted in a proud little boy with great ambition, but also encouraged a more devious, selfish side to him which morally conflicts him. He has several thread snakes as pets, all named after flowers.

FC: Adonis Bosso. Taken.
Victoire Eznet, age 9

Victoire is third in line behind her mother and older sister. She exhibits her mother's best traits, her generosity in particular, and she isn't concerned about becoming the family mambo. She knows she can preserve and protect their faith and family without a position of power. She will be a Ravenclaw at Hogwarts, and often finds herself coming home with injured animals she nurses back to health.

FC: Tami Williams. Open.
Lilou Franceska, age 7

Lilou is fourth in line and very aware of the fact she'll never get to be or do the things her mother and grandmother can - at least to the same extent. She is mischievous and envious of how people linger on their every word, and at the moment romantices the position as if it's comparable to that of princesses in fairytales. She will be a Slytherin and in her free time likes to practice traditional dance.

FC: Malaika Firth. Open.

HEMLOCK HOUSE

Situated near Watchet, Somerset, Hemlock House sits on a river within a town and consists of three floors - each of course charmed to appear larger - and one of being solely utilised for Séverine's work in potioneering and expertise in poisons.

Inhabitants:   Séverine Victoire (Mother)
                          Cupidot Thierry
                          Juliette Fabienne
                          Lovelie Zaïre
                          Bebe Mercidieu

 Family Pets:   Rhino Iguana (Séverine)
                         Stick Insect (Cupidot)

Séverine Victoire, 36, fifth in line

Séverine is a fiercely independant woman that is known for her scathing stare and quick tongue. She particularly enjoys playing devil's advocate to irritate her older sister. She is a devoted and loving mother, and despite also being somewhat of a romantic she is yet to find a man worthy of being called husband due to high standards and the upmost respect for her family and culture. She is a master potioneer and specialises in rare poisons, often being employed by law enforcement.

FC: Naomi Campbell. Taken.
Cupidot Thierry, Age 11

Cupidot is a Slytherin at Hogwarts school and is Séverine's oldest child. Much to everyone's dismay, he takes after his mother a little too much. He is fiercely independant and outspoken, and he often butts heads with his family, including his mother, which results in a slap across the skull. He has inherited his family's talent for potions and possesses a particular interest in entimology.

FC: Daje Badour. Taken.
Juliette Fabienne, age 10

Juliette is Séverine's oldest daughter. She's ultra competitive with her eldest brother and regularly fights others on the best way to accomplish things. She always sides with her mother and is incredibly judgmental. Her handwriting is  incredibly neat and she keeps her belongings tidy and precise. Many people find her to be difficult to be around, except for those with the most backbone to withstand her prickly side. She will be a Slytherin at Hogwarts.

FC: Jourdan Dunn. Open.
Lovelie Zaïre, age 8

Lovelie is incredibly sarcastic and sharp tongued, often bickering with her two eldest siblings. Once she begins talking, she can dicatate for hours on her opinions, much to the annoyance of her family members. She takes on a usually frank tone which lacks any pretention to grace or tact. She collecting wildflowers and pressing them in notebooks. Her bedroom wall is filled with frames of her favorites. She will be a Slytherin at Hogwarts.

FC: Aya Jones. Reserved.
Bebe Mercidieu, age 2

Aside from her rhinosaurus iguana, little Bebe is his mother's pride and joy. He is a happy toddler, and finds particular amusement in watching his siblings get smacked up the head whenever they step out of line. He will grow to be a gentle giant and will be sorted into Hufflepuff at Hogwarts.

FC: Undecided. Closed.

1E SEYMOUR AVE.

Situated near Bridgwater, Somerset, Mercidieu Jr. and his family live in an apartment that he personally converted into 2 floors. He is the furthest from their mother, the mambo, wanting to achieve great personal success without abandoning family responsibilities.

Inhabitants:   Mercidieu Jr.  (Father)
                          Jozamine Éloise (Mother)
                          Vilsaint Claude
                          Dieubelle Serès

 Family Pets:   Ashy-Faced Owl (family)

Mercidieu Junior, 35, Cursebreaker

Growing up, Mercidieu and his dominant personality was often at odds with his father until his untimely death, as a result of a Vodou curse, when Mercidieu was just 15. This is what inspired his career in curses and cursebreaking. Despite the matriarchal hierarchy of his family, Mercidieu was generally flippant towards many of the women in his life until his mother put down her foot – struggling even then to assert himself. He is gregarious, loves attention, and taking the lead. He was (at least for a time, perhaps still) a womanzier.

FC: Tyson Beckford. Open.
Jozamine Éloise, 33, Nurse

Jozamine met Mercidieu working as a nurse for a cursed patient at St. Mungos, and has since remained one of the only women to command his attention and respect with little effort. Despite wholeheartedly converting to Vodou, she remains the one in law yet to gain the respect of the Mambo. Jozamine can be as cruel as she is loving, with how she treats others being almost solely dependant on how people treat her.

Suggested FC: Antonia Thomas. Open.
Vilsaint Claude, age 12

Vilsaint is the oldest of Mercidieu's two children and the apple of his eye, however Vilsaint is silently resentful of his father's attention and expectations. He embraces the influence the Belizaire women, and has grown into an empathetic boy that cherishes every moment he gets with his grandmother. It is with her he is gaining a particularly impressive talent in cooking. He is a Ravenclaw at Hogwarts.

FC: Reece King. Open.
Dieubelle Serès, age 9

Little Dieubelle, despite being so small, has an abnormal abundance of energy. With her brother away at Hogwarts most of the year, she can often be found with her cousins during the day whilst their parents are at work, climbing trees and trying to escape from familial duties. She will be a Gryffindor at Hogwarts.

FC: Melodie Monrose. Open.

BLOOD STATUS: HALFBLOOD
ETHNICITY: HAITIAN
RELIGION: HAITIAN VODOU
MOTHER TONGUE: CREOLE
LOCATION: SOMERSET, UK
INSIGNIA: HISPANIOLA BOA

A proud family from the first nation of free slaves, the Belizaire family flourishes best by blending the many strengths of their diverse roots. It is in their native Haiti that they drew deeply from those roots and rose tall, growing in influence, wealth, and skill but not arrogance, greed, or sin.

Within their circle of influence, the matrilineal line is paramount, and above that the family of the Mambo. Upon the occasion of marriage, sons of outside families adopt the Belizaire name of their wife whilst sons of Belizaire blood pass the name to their children. In this way the Belizaire female line is preserved and the tradition of the Mambo is strengthened both in blood and in name.

The Belizaire do not ascribe to those fears of ‘dilution’ or ‘purity’ of magical blood. For the Great Creator made all and is therefore in degrees divine. And so it has been passed down in the generations, that just as the Mother created the world and guides her children and her creation, so does the Mambo for her fanmi in all its relation and descent.

Sévérine visited her mother often, and with her came the four grandchildren her mother loved so dearly. More so than her own children, in fact, including Sévérine, but she could hardly find the time to be bitter when such a trait was universal. She had never met a grandparent that didn’t put their grandchildren on an impossibly high pedestal, and she supposed that was her saving grace. Her mother was – or seemed to be - far too busy fawning over her grandchildren to concern herself too much with how Sévérine conducted herself throughout life.

At the door she knocked twice before entering, a warning if anything else, and called out for her mother who responded with an invitation into her father’s study where the fire illuminated the bookshelves and dusty artefacts with a nostalgic orange glow reminiscent of a Haitian sunset.. Sévérine kissed both of her cheeks and passed her youngest, Bebe, into her mother’s arms before descending into a leather armchair. Lovelie, her youngest daughter, followed and quickly clung to her grandmother, and as for Cupidot and Juliette, they had followed the trail of a rich aroma wafting its way from the kitchen. It was undoubtedly one of her father’s creations, one of tradition and reclaimed herbs and spices.

"You're late." Her mother's words carried a tone that matched the aggrieved expression on her face, but then the precious Bebe cooed in her arms and a smile forced itself onto thinning lips.

"I hope not." She responded plainly, "I couldn't handle a fifth."

In return, a loud tut and rolling eyes, and Sévérine's lips curved upwards in amusement. She could always succeed in her remarks due to one simple fact – she wasn't first in line. Her responsibilities were great but she had never had the privilege of carrying the same destiny as her older sister, who was to be Mambo after their mother had passed. Now that she was bitter about, but she also wasn't foolish. She was aware the weight that came with carrying the crown, and she knew that her heart was not honourable in its desires. Whilst the Belizaires stood for unity and generosity, Sévérine desired power and possessed a selfish ambition that had always disappointed her parents. Not to mention the compassion her sister embodied, which contributed to why she was ultimately favoured out of the five siblings.

"Are you well? Have the children eaten?"

"Not to your standard, Mama. The seams of their clothes are yet to burst."

"What have I told you? My Lovelie, she clings to me practically skeletal. This isn't the island Sévérine, these children need warmth." She tightened her grip on Lovelie and squeezed lovingly before kissing the top of her head, "Lunch will be ready soon. We'll eat in the garden."

Sévérine shook her head, but could not bring herself to argue as her mother would not be happy until her children were round enough to roll rather than walk, "I was, what, five years old? I barely remember the island mama, only war. You'd be better off asking Espérance." She was older, after all, "Speaking of, will my dear sister be joining us?”

She knew she wouldn’t be, but there was a fire in Sévérine’s that her mother liked to poke and though deep down she knew that her mother’s concerns came from a place of love, she did not take well to criticism. Especially not on how she raised her children, who had turned out far better than any of her sibling’s offspring thank you very much. They were strong, tenacious, and most importantly, respectful, which was more than she could say for any of Espérance’s children, especially her daughters, with whom she often had the urge to smack upside the head.

How her mother complained about her parenting rather than Espérance’s was beyond her and quite frankly insulting.

Sévérine inhaled deeply through her nose and inspected her fingernails to keep herself from scowling too blatantly in a likely futile attempt to prevent further cynicism. She often wondered if it was her lack of a husband that made her parenting so questionable, as she was the only one of her siblings who did not marry and thus could not provide a father figure for her children. No one had ever explicitly disapproved, as it would, by logic alone, be ridiculous. The family thrived on the presence of women. In the past, the present, and the future, they were matriarchal and would remain matriarchal. However, this did not stop her from wondering what if? In her eyes, she should have been commended. She had pushed out and raised four brilliant children by herself, and if that wasn’t worth something she didn’t know what was.

“No, but Cirius may stop by with the twins.”

“Ah, no surprise. Toussaint had caught a cough the last time I saw him."

As if on cue, her mother looked up from Lovelie and pursed her lips. Sévérine met her gaze and blinked ignorantly. She may not have been able to erase her own flaws, but she could always remind her mother of her sibling’s, as the difference between her and her older sister was that Sévérine catered to her own before everyone else, whilst Espérance was totally devout to the community and their cause. It was admirable to an extent, and of course, everybody loved her, but the children suffered more than anyone cared to realise. Reminding her mother of just that meant it would be at least a couple of hours until she returned to her role as target.

"No... but perhaps I should send for him. He has been looking frail."

"Perhaps you should. With Espee out on call and Francillion on the fields, what better way to strengthen a boy than to fill him with his Grandfather's rice and stew?"

Her mother rushed out of the room, Bebe still in her arms, and Lovelie crawled onto Sévérine's lap and rested her head against her shoulder. At this point, Sévérine allowed a hefty exhale to escape her nostrils.

“Remind me to visit less often.”

Option Two -
The snow had been falling steadily all morning and it didn't look like it was going to stop any time soon. Joshua Campbell scrunched his face up in a frown as he lifted his gaze to look to the sky. Snow. It really was quite a bother.

And it certainly didn't make it better that Diagon Alley seemed to be getting more and more crowded. Joshua sighed and pointed his wand at the large box that was currently placed on the doorstep of his shop. He had to get going. He had an order to deliver.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" The elderly man muttered and watched the box hover in the air for a moment. Honestly, did St. Mungo's really need that much tinsel? And with glitter of all things? He sighed again. If it hadn't been for the rather convincing stamp on the order, he would have been likely to believe it had been a prank by one of those orphaned rascals living up there.

Oh well, there was no point in waiting. Joshua deftly stirred the box down the doorstep and out onto the street, carefully levitating it above the heads of the crowd.

"Coming through! Coming through!" His voice sounded over the chatter of the crowd. "Keep out! Move ahead! Go on!" This was going way too slow. People were in the way and walking like they had all day! He huffed. Luckily the road was down hill.

"Coming through! Coming th--- arrrgh!" Joshua let out a loud shout as his feet suddenly slipped in the snow and sent him, the box, and several long strands of tinsel tumbling into the person who had been walking in front of him.

"For Merlin's sake!" Joshua muttered angrily as he hurried to his feet again, red and gold tinsel now decorating his black coat. "I am so sorry! This blasted snow!" He looked apologetic at the person he had crashed into.

With four children to cater to, Sévérine had come to dread the winter months. Only her oldest two were attending Hogwarts School, but that didn’t make Diagon Alley any easier to tackle when it came to buying house jumpers and scarves to keep their growing bones warm or books and stationery to ensure they had everything they needed in order to excel when they returned to Hogwarts the following year. Severine wanted the very best for her babies no matter the cost and she would petrify this God damn crowd in order to get it.

Her youngest, Bebe, hadn’t even begun his primary education – not officially at least. He was being taught the very basics of the divine by Severine herself, and she often kept his hands dirty with mud and plants not even a three-year-old could destroy to ensure he too would enrich the world like his siblings and the familial community that surrounded him. As for her darling Lovelie, whose tongue was as sharp as her own, she had shown a great interest in wildflowers and spent her days learning how to identify, care for, and utilise rare plants and flowers in order to help both the people around her with traditional remedies from their homeland as well as the discoveries the family has made since their arrival in Britain.

Juliette had just started her first year at Hogwarts, and Severine did not want to let her go back. She didn’t want to let either of her oldest children go back there. She had only just got Cupidot back where she could keep him close (and more importantly, keep an eye on him) and now she had to prepare to say goodbye to two of her children rather than one. It enraged her. So much so she had been storming around their home in Somerset for over a week rather than flaunting her usual elegant stride with swishing hips and an aura of undeniable mystery. She now banged cupboards, slammed doors, and stomped furiously in anticipation of the inevitable – and little did she realise this likely made it all the more enjoyable to leave her.

“Walk faster. If you get lost, you will stay lost.”

They were heading toward Ollivander’s where Juliette was to receive her first wand, and both Lovelie and Cupidot were slacking. She didn’t want to be there any more than they did, and they would be wise to remember she was spending her hard earned money on their betrayal before they opened their mouths to protest their day out in Diagon Alley. Bebe, as always, cooed in her arms and clung to her tight, whilst Juliette held her hand as if her life depended on it (which it did, in all honesty) to keep herself from being swallowed by the crowds.

“After Juliette recieves her wand we can get lunch.” She didn’t have to look. The eyes of her children sparkled with the promise of food, and the corners of her lips curved upwards as she strode on towards Ollivander's wand shop, "Ah, and have you given any mind to the animal you would like to take back with you?"

Her eldest, Cupidot, for reasons that were beyond her understanding, had settled on a stick insect back when he was preparing for his first year. This was the reason behind the very specific list of acceptable pets Juliette was allowed to take back to Hogwarts with her. It consisted mostly of reptiles, amphibians, and birds, but she was also generous enough to mammals of the cuter variety as well some more dignified insects (at least compared to a stick insect) such as tarantulas and giant beetles.

"Well... didn't you say Great Uncle Salomen is trying to make little Beaus?"

Sévérine nodded, a wave of satisfaction coming over her as her daughter spoke of who could quite possibly be considered the light of her life – a rhinoceros iguana she had adopted almost 15 years ago – and her uncle who made a living out of breeding rare and wonderful endangered creatures. If she could rely on any of her children to do what was expected of them, it was Juliette.

"I was thinking maybe I could have one of those... I know what they like to eat and how to look after them and it's not like I'll ever lo—" Her daughters words ended abruptly before a deafening shriek escaped her.

"Juliette! What hap – "

"I am so sorry! This blasted snow!"

The witch had turned without a second thought, curious and concerned as to why her daughter's hand had been ripped from hers. She was then rudely greeted by the site of Juliette covered in red and gold tinsel and a man trying to gather his belongings.

Sévérine saw red, and later Lovelie would swear she saw steam coming from her ears.

"You stupid little man." She spat fiercely, stepping closer and whipping a string of tinsel off of her daughter, "Are you blind as well as foolish?"

At this point she had thrown the tinsel to the floor and raised her finger to the man, her voice having raised significantly and the distance closing between them. She had always been relentless, especially where her children were concerned, and Sévérine attempted to prod the man hard in the shoulder with her manicured fingertip.

"Well?"
