Declan was born in Dún Laoghaire near Dublin to Fintan and Eithne O’Dwyer. His father had a career in professional duelling as a young man, before settling down to continue the O’Dwyer family business in real estate, construction and magical augmentation to wizarding dwellings. His mother was a quite controversial women for her time, having qualified as a curse breaker and frequently being away from home while Declan was a young child. In her absence, his time would be spent with his paternal gransparents Pádraig and Muireann.

Pádraig was a passionate horseman and as a result Declan spent a lot of time outdoors with his grandfather. He grew very fond of riding too. His grandmother, on the other hand, was a great patron of the arts and crafts, collecting paintings, jewellery and gothic novels. She would often read to Declan who as always intrigued by the fantastical and imaginary journeys his grandmother could take him on.

When he was 8 years old, his younger brother Lorcan was born. Declan didn’t care too much for baby Lorcan who was loud, annoying and stole away his parent’s attention from him. In turn, this caused him to grow even closer with his grandparents.
When it was time for Declan to enrol in school, Pádraig gifted his grandson an heirloom wand that had been in the possession of the family for generations. It was made from Ebony and Purpleheart wood with a core of demiguise hair. The handle has been crafted with beautiful crystal inlays, making it a very fancy and artistic piece, but not necessarily a very suitable one for an 11 year old boy.

In his first and second year at school, Declan struggled to make any friends. Being quiet, studious and rubbish at flying, didn’t make him one of the more popular kids in his house. He did exceptionally well in his written assignments, but somewhat struggled with his wand work, not yet having mastered the family heirloom he had been given. It always seemed too long and just terribly unwieldy.

Determined to catch up on his casting, Declan practised continuously and would study, practise or duel with anyone who was willing to give him the time of day. For a while he “lived” in the school library working with students from all houses in a quest to get better. During a practise duel with a mate an unfortunate incident occurred involving a miscast charm, falling and getting his wand stuck in his eye. As a result, he suffered some humiliation, teasing from his fellow students and his pupil has never been entirely right since. He tries to cover the injury with charms to make it less noticeable.

In the years that followed, Declan seemed to come into his own. A growth spurt seemed to finally make him tall enough to wield his elegant heirloom wand effectively. He started to achieve better results in the practical portion of his studies and as a result developed a little bit more self-confidence. Missing home, spending time outside and his horse, Declan would spend long hours exploring the school grounds and becoming familiar with every blade of grass. He had a favourite spot beside the lake, where he could often be found doing his homework, writing in his journal or trying his hand at writing poems.

During the school holidays he would often spend some time with his brother Lorcan. Not necessarily voluntarily, but because his parents insisted upon it. Lorcan was a quite different personality, outgoing and sporty, so the two brothers didn’t have a lot of common ground.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request:Ravenclaw

Personality:
Declan is an intelligent, extremely sensitive and introverted young man. He likes reading books more than anything; be it academic texts or poetry, either is equally enjoyable to him. Having been raised in a pureblood family, he had a lot of exposure to art and culture. He likes to draw and enjoys listening to music – though not an accomplished musician himself.

Being the oldest of his siblings, and prospective heir to the family business and family fortune, Declan was raised to be well-spoken, courteous, polite, thoughtful and patient. As far as his patience is concerned, he sometimes still struggles with that.

He tends to come across as aloof and maybe a touch arrogant. In truth, he still feels a bit awkward in his body and in his position. For that reason, he sometimes finds the company of his horse, Lord Fenian, more enjoyable than the company of people.

He has a fraught and problematic relationship with his mother, which has at times produced some rebellious behaviour typical of a teenager: being late to class, not writing home on time, ruining a set of expensive robes while out with his horse.

Appearance:
Declan is a tall and frail looking young man, frequently described as all skin and bones. He has medium-length, brown hair, a gaunt face and striking cold grey eyes. A particularly noticeable feature is that his left pupil is slightly larger than his right pupil giving him oddly mismatched eyes. The strange appearance is the result of an accident during a practise duel. Since then, the pupil has remained permanently dilated. Declan is somewhat self-conscious about this and tries to cover this irregularity with charms.

In general, it could be said that he is quite graceful and has a somewhat feminine demeanour at times. On this count, looks can be deceiving. He is not as soft and fanciful as he might come across at a quick glance.

Option I:

The dungeons. A place eleven-year-old Evangeline had not yet travelled since her arrival at Hogwarts.

A place she really was just fine with not knowing; but it was too late. The dare had been accepted, even if it had been done in fear of being kicked out of Gryffindor, like the older girls had said she would because Gryffindors were supposed to be brave.

The air changed instantly when she hit the main corridor of the dungeons. The dampness was almost too much for her and she instinctively took a deep breath to avoid the sensation of being suffocated. There was also a sour burning smell which Evangeline assumed was from many, many Potions lessons.

Further and further she walked, her steps so slow and gentle they made no noise against the stone walls and floor. The feeling that she wasn't alone crept up her spine and raised the tiny hair on the back of her neck. Shivering, Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself. Suddenly, she missed the warmth and comfort of the Gryffindor common room. The fire was always going and it made her feel at ease.

Why had she let those girls talk her into this? She was only eleven, she didn't have to be brave. Surely the Headmistress would not kick her out of Hogwarts for not being brave.

If only she had these thoughts while being dared to search for the ghost of one Emma Birch, whom supposedly haunted the dungeons. It was not, Evangeline had learned, the place where the sixteen-year-old girl's life had ended but as she had been from the house with a snake as its mascot, it was the place her spirit had returned to. That common room was down here somewhere, she'd been told.

Something - the small blonde girl wasn't quite sure what - but something made her stop in her tracks suddenly. There was a low, dull thumping noise. Or maybe that was her heart beating so loudly she thought it was coming from outside her body.

"H-h-hello?" Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Remembering that she was supposed to be brave, Evangeline tried again.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?"

The sound of her own words bouncing back at her off the walls made her jump.

Potions was a bit of a favourite school subject for Declan. He didn’t like it quite as much as Arithmancy, and he doubted that there would ever be another subject he loved as much, but it was a close second. It was probably for that reason he didn’t mind staying behind after class to clean up benches and cauldrons. He was quietly hoping for a house point or two and maybe the opportunity to speak with the potions professor privately when they came back to the classroom to discuss a theory he had developed.

A little while ago, it had occurred to him that with a handful of substitutions it would be possible to create an improved Girding potion. Which lead him to the obvious question as to why nobody had previously tried to substitute the required doxy eggs with a different ingredient. Maybe there was some obvious reaction he was overlooking, but as far as he could tell the problem could be solved more elegantly with ashwinder eggs. Maybe it was down to those being relatively hard to come by.

He pointed his wand at one of the largest cauldrons in the room and filled it up with warm water, before adding some soap from the shelf. He picked up some rags, dunked them in the solution and moved his wand again to set them to work on the dirty benches. He turned toward the dirty cauldrons in the sink waiting for a good scrub. Momentarily lost in his thoughts about the Girding potion he knocked one of the wooden chairs against one of the benches with a dull thud.

A moment later he heard a young girl’s voice.

“Afraid I haven’t seen Emma if you are looking for her,” Declan replied to the girl.

“Maybe try the empty classroom at the end of the corridor? I believe she likes to hang out there.”

Note: whilst it's fine for you to refer generally to Declan's use of charms to cover up his injury, if you want to refer to a specific spell(s) for this, you will need to submit a special request for the spell(s) to be added to our canon. You also mention Declan's horse in your biography, please note that Hogwarts only allows rats, cats, toads, and owls as school pets; any other animals must be approved by the admins first. Head of Ravenclaw
do you remember the twenty-first night of september?
love was changing the minds of pretenders while chasing the clouds away
our hearts were ringing in the key that our souls were singing
as we danced in the night, remember how the stars stole the night away
