Biography:
My name is Annabella Clare Twitchett, which means my initials are ACT. I think this means I am destined to be an actress, but my sister Bellamy says that’s not how it works. I think she only says that because HER initials are BAT and she doesn’t want to be a bat. I’d like it if she were a bat, because then she wouldn’t be telling me what to do all the time. She’s nineteen already and thinks she knows everything, because she has a job at the Ministry, but she only got it because father works there. Her twin, Blythe, isn’t nearly as bossy, even though she’s already a mum.

Mums are supposed to be bossy, even though mine isn’t. Hawthorne says our mum isn’t bossy because there are so many of us, so it gets spread around and the house elves have to look after us. I think it’s just because she’s too tired. She’s going to have ANOTHER baby soon and she always looks tired. I wish she wouldn’t have any more babies. I’m number TEN in our family. It would have been nice if she had stopped after me, except I wouldn’t want to give up any of my younger siblings. Hawthorne and Hortensia are two years younger than me, and they’re rather annoying, but I can always beat them at Quidditch.

I suppose it wouldn’t matter if I got rid of them anyway, because we live in my family’s manor and there are lots of cousins around. If I didn’t have siblings I had to share with, there would be cousins. There are ALWAYS cousins. I wish that I were a Thatcher, though. They think they’re the best just because it’s technically their manor. My mum was a Thatcher, though, so it’s just as much mine as theirs. Plus, my grandmother was American, which is more exciting.

I suppose if I’m going to talk about my family, I should tell you more about them. I have FIFTEEN siblings. Nobody ever believes that we’re all really siblings. I told a Muggle in the village about them once, and he said nobody could have fifteen babies and I must be adopted. Well, MY mum did, and she’s going to have number sixteen this winter. She had FIVE sets of twins, though, so it’s really more like eleven babies, which is a little less.

Anyway, there are sixteen of us and I’m number ten. Blythe and Bellamy are the oldest, and they already graduated. Then there’s Lucian, Lysander, Felix, Callidora, Cassius, Augustus, and Thaddeus all older than me. After me are Hawthorne, Hortensia, Sunday, Sapphira, Crispin, and Dunstan the baby. Except Dustan won’t be the baby anymore soon, so I hope he’s ready to start sharing. I hope the next one is a girl, since we’re outnumbered.

I think my dad wanted to have so many of us so that maybe one of us would be next in line to run the family. Right now my Great-Grandmother Thatcher is the family head, but she’s 94. I’m not sure exactly what happened, but a lot of people died in an accident and now nobody is sure who will be family head next. Lucian says she hasn’t chosen anyone because she doesn’t like any of the grandchildren, so it might be one of us great-grandchildren. He thinks that it will be him, but Lysander thinks that too, and they can’t both be right. I wouldn’t want to be family head. You get to be on the Wizengamot and send bad people to Azkaban, but you also have to listen to everyone fighting all the time.

I don’t like my family very much. My siblings are okay (I love them of course) but some of them aren’t very nice to other people or Muggles. Lysander says that we’re better than Muggles and we shouldn’t have to hide from them, because we should be ruling them. I don’t like it when he talks like that.

I can’t wait to go to Hogwarts where I can make REAL friends, that I’m not related to. I don’t want to marry any of my cousins like everyone else in the family has to. I also don’t want to marry a German, like my sister Blythe did. Actually, I just don’t want to marry anybody.

I want to go to Hogwarts and do whatever I want to do. I don’t know what that is yet, but I’ll know when I get there. All I know is that once you’re at Hogwarts you only have to follow the school rules, not the family’s rules. I can even play on the Quidditch team if I want to. And I’m NOT going to be in Slytherin with Lucian and Lysander, because then they’d tell me what to do anyway. When you go to Hogwarts only the Sorting Hat can tell you what house you’re in, not your brothers. I can’t wait!

House Request: Gryffindor would be Annabella's (and my) first choice, to stick it to her family, who only consider Slytherin and sometimes Ravenclaw to be acceptable houses.

Personality:
Annabella is impulsive and outspoken. In her large family, the only way to get any attention is by being extra good or extra bad. Unfortunately, Annabella was not blessed with the docile and biddable personality that would win her accolades for being an especially good daughter. She figured out very early in life that she was unable to out perform her siblings’ good behavior and decided to go with the only other method. Luckily for her, many of the things she does for attention (such as sneaking into the village to hang out with Muggles) are not intrinsically bad—just taboo to her family.

She is fiercely devoted to the idea of justice. It’s not clear whether this is a result of being in trouble so often or causes the trouble in the first place, but Annabella believes that all people (even Muggles) are equal. She doesn’t approve of many of the things her family does, especially their obvious sympathies with the Hexenreich, but she still has a hard time thinking that anyone she likes could be a bad person. She has been punished many times for being outspoken about her views, but still thinks she can change their minds someday…perhaps when she becomes a famous actress in Hollywood.

Besides “acting” (mostly just strutting around pretending to be famous) her other interests are climbing trees, reading (especially about America), pretending to be a house elf, trying to sneak into the Muggle school lessons, and secretly playing Quidditch at the neighbors’. She does NOT enjoy all the things she is supposed to be doing instead of all her secret activities, like attending lessons, learning etiquette, and looking after her younger siblings.

The driving undercurrent behind her personality is passion. Whatever interest or idea she is fixated on at the moment will be pursued passionately and to the exclusion of all others.

Appearance:
Annabella is petite and short for her age. She has unruly long, curly, light brown hair that is often left loose and tangled, or worn in sloppy braids. Her face is round and freckled and she has cheerful grey eyes. Her clothing is usually proper robes or dresses and patent leather shoes, but is often untidy, dirty, or damaged, much to her nanny’s dismay.

Annabella crept along the corridor, tapping lightly on the stones of the corridor wall.

She had been down in the dungeons a few times already, for their Potions lessons, but it was impossible to do any real investigating with packs of students hurrying to and fro. Plus, there was probably some sort of spell keeping the swimming pool hidden when unbelievers were about.

The very first time she had heard Augustus mention the dungeon swimming pool, she knew she was destined to find it. He hadn’t said where it might be, however, and even though she “got lost” on the way to Potions class and took a long ramble through the dungeons, it hadn’t shown itself. She had tried to sweet talk its location out of Cassius, but he had only let slip a few vague clues.

She knew what she had to do next. In the Muggle mystery novel she had read, they found a hidden room by tapping on the wall. She was pretty sure she’d likely to be branded a weirdo if she just went about the castle banging on walls, so obviously she had to wait until night to try. So that was how she found herself tapping down the corridors of the dungeons in the dark. She fancied herself very brave indeed, but the heavy silence and damp walls were downright creepy.

She raised her hand for the next tap and then froze. What was that sound? A voice? A ghost?! Another sound came echoing out of the darkness.

"Hello! Is Emma Birch here?”

Annabella nearly laughed aloud in relief. It was just another kid, not an angry ghost. Ghosts said things like “aaaaahOOOOoooo” and “Boo!” not “Is Emma Birch here”. She suddenly remembered that she had a wand for a reason and pulled it out of her sleeve and pointed it down the corridor before muttering “Lumos!”

“Emma Birch? What, the dead girl?”
