SHOPKEEPER PERMIT
You must have applied as an Elsewhere character before completing this permit.

Shop name: Blackwood Books
Shop Type: This is a "rare" bookshop. Old and hard to find books.
Location: Diagon Alley (Preferably on the corner between diagon and knockturn)
Subforum? Yes please. Purchased using Gringotts points.

Short Description (50 words max): Rare and hard to find books sold in store or acquired on request. An interesting place to browse the shelves and find the most obscure of literary gems.
Long Description (200 words min): This small, and slightly overly stuffed shop contains a plethora of odd and hard to find books. Dark ones, light ones. Silly ones. Informative ones. Volumes such as "A place to find all things that cannot be found" and "Randanar's Rambunctious Recount of Scottish Roads" (An entirely useless book in which a crazy old Scottish wizard waxes lyrical about all the roads he has ever set foot on). You will find no recent bestsellers on the shelves here.

Owned by Trystan Blackwood, a former Ravenclaw, avid book collector, former CoMC professor and all round slight oddball. He runs his store with the most love and care anyone could show a pile of old books and still be called decent. Customer service is a little hard to come by. While the owner is perfectly friendly enough, he is loathed to part with many of the bound pages, more than a few of which may or may not have come from his personal collection. He denies it eternally. A love of the eccentric will serve you well here.

At the front of the shop there are a couple of old wooden tables, each with one chair, for those that may want to come and read. If you are very lucky, the owner may offer you a coffee. The shelves are very tall, and a little ramshackle. The books have "sections" but are often disorganized, or squirreled away if they are considered "too popular". Pi the old barn Owl sits atop a perch behind the old style counter, behind which is a low, scruffy but very comfy looking armchair. If you enter Blackwood books and think it understaffed, it is likely you will find Trystan in said chair, hidden from inquiring eyes, reading some of the merchandise.

What purpose will this shop serve other than selling things and being the home of your character? Why would people want to RP there just for fun?

It serves as something to keep Trystan from dwelling, as well as "hopefully" getting him to meet more people. It is a passion and a love child. Trystans shop is his world. It is a place for the curious and the seeking alike. Once visited, if you dont leave with the book you wanted, at least you will leave with one hell of a conversation starter. "You ever been to Blackwood Books? I went there earlier and you'll never guess what....

CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character name: Trystan G Blackwood

Previous and/or Current Character(s) if applicable: Penelope Wynovain, Rupert Myridor, Elidir Medraut, Jenay Beauchamp

Character age: 32

Character education: Hogwarts 11-18
Selwyns Academy of Further Education - 18-22

Strength and weaknesses (details please): Trystan has always been good with charms, and also Transfigurations. Those were his core focusses as a student at Hogwarts. He did however love Potions. He liked the complexity of the ingredients, the timing, the methodical preparation. He had always been a stickler for detail. In fact a whole section of his book shop was devoted to rare and hard to find potions manuals, all of which he had read. His weaknesses are Divination and sometimes cooking, not that it would be neccessary for him to cook in his position you understand, but he makes very good burnt toast and dried out beans. It figures, great at felix felicis but beans on toast baffled him.

Physical description: Rather tall, lean but surprisingly muscular if you see him shirtless. He has a neat and punctual looking gait and is always well groomed. Depending on his mood that month his hair is either quite short or bordering on shaggy. It is always curly. He has steely grey/blue eyes and a long face. He also has a rather startlingly wide mouth which he makes no attempt to hide. He likes to dress in dark colours and crisp shirts with a tie and jacket. He also keeps his finger nails clean and short. There is nothing more unbecoming of a gentleman than dirty fingernails.

Personality (nice, rude, funny etc. Paragraph please.): He is rather dry. Always has been. It hasnt earnt him many friends over the years, but being a former Ravenclaw it seemed to be fitting. However he does have one excellent friend in Wesley Winsday whome he grew up with. Their homes were closer than not when he was a child. He likes a good joke and actually has a very good sense of humour. He is exceptionally kind, especially to the young. He has an extraordinary amount of patience. He temper has a long fuse but my is the bomb big when it finally explodes. Any student that was unwise enough to push him that far would find themselves in the most unpleasent detentions for a good long while. Other than that he is an all round pleasent man, if somewhat intollerant of fools.

Hopes and dreams. Why are you teaching at Hogwarts?: He has been volunteering of late at the home in Hogsmead for the orphans, and he loves it more than his book shop, which is a huge deal for Trystan. He likes to see them engaged, and loves nothing better than answering the weird and wonderful questions that the young seem to be good at posing. He has a disabled sister Darleen and she is his light. He loves to care for her and until now he hand't realised that the natrual progression from his entire collection of life experiences was becoming a professor. He hopes so much to help educate the next generation in the artistry that is Herbology.

Biography (500 words minimum. There is never such a thing as too much.):

"Don't you think it would be better if you found yourself a ladyfriend Trys" He rolled his eyes and took another spoonful from the bowl in his right hand. "Mother, If I've told you once, I must had told you a thousand times. If I happen to find someone, it happens. Im going to go and actively prowl like some drooling ape. You should know me better than that" his voice was firm but tired. He and his mother had had this conversation countless times previously.

If it didn't cause him so much pain he wondered whether he would be able to laugh it off. But the pain was no less fresh than the day he lost Cal's 6 years ago. He was just fine as he was. Him, Pillios and his books back at home.

Monthly dinners at his parents house were something that had happened forever, ever since he had moved out and gone to University. He loved them both dearly of course. Trystan wasn't indifferent to his parents, far from it. His childhood had been happy, normal. His school career sucessful, entertaining at times. Joshua had been immensely proud to finally have another Ravenclaw in the family of course. Sopia had been a Slytherin. Four years Trystans senior. People always assumed it was elder brothers that were the worst but Trystan could make a good arguement to the contrary.

Darleen hadn't gone to Hogwarts of course. She was hardly capable of that. The contents of the spoon dropped back into the bowl with the faintest of noises and Trystans eyes focussed once again on his younger sisters face. Darleen was smacking her lips and looking at him expectantly, with the cheeky little gleam she always saved for her only brother. "Ok ok, Im sorry" he said softly and putting the now full spoon to her lips. "Im getting lost in my own thoughts again aren't I"

He always chattered to Darleen. She seemed to respond to it. She smiled and giggled at him, every second he was there. He wished he could spend more time with her. She was the one person that he could never tire of. She was hard work, yes of course. Disabilitis like Darleens were always hardest on the families that had to provide the care. Mother did amazingly well but she was getting on in years.

What would happen to Darleen when they were incapable or too old? She couldnt go to Sophia. She was far too disinterested, and cold to care for Darleen. She had been ashamed all her life of her little sister and Trystan despised her for it.

"What do you want for christmas then?" he asked the girl in the wheel chair in front of him. She grinned and blew a bubbled from her lips, crossing her eyes so that she could try and see it pop. He stretched out a finger and lightly poked the delicate film eminating from her mouth. As it popped she let out a little shriek of glee and began to produce more. Trystans face changed to a sterner look. "No no, come on, finish you're dinner and then we can play bubbles" he grinned at her as she frowned at him and growled. She was a cheeky sod at the best of times.

His eyes glanced quickly to the clock above the fire. It was nearly time to get home. He could stay a little later tonight but not too late. He needed to get back to the shop and make sure that everything was in order for openeing in the morning. They had a new bestseller to promote. Some tripe about the tales of a traveller that had seen "Untold wonders" or some such garp. He wasn't interested in such volumes but the sales from such books payed his ground rent so he shouldn't grumble.

Stroking Daleens hair he looked at her with sad eyes, trying his hardest to conjure up a genuine smile. He always hated leaving her. "I have to go now, but Ma says your visiting me next week yes?" Darleen gurgled and let out a very high pitched squeak. Trystan winced and then chuckled. "Ill take that as a yes then" he beamed. "See you soon poppet" he kissed her lightly on the forhead as her clumsy uncoordinated hands found his back and hair.

Standing he turned to embrace his Mother "See you next week then" he smiled. It wasn't forced and nodded to his father who jumped quickly from his chair. He had been absorbed in todays paper containing the latest news on the bombings. "Yes yes, good. Get a hair cut" he grumbled at Trystan. Trys rolled his eyes. "Yes Pa" he offered and grinned at Darleen, winking.

With that he was out in the cold again. A short apparition home and he would be in his living room. Another monthly dinner over.

As he strode to the door he turned his head over his shoulder adding, "By the way Mother...I'm applying to Hogwarts to be a professor" and with that he turned on his heals and disappeared. He would deal with that conversation next time.

SAMPLE ROLEPLAY
(Please respond to to this in third person past tense. Do not write the other characters' reactions. Only your own.)

It was the largest office in Hogwarts and, perhaps to students and newcomers, the most intimidating. The shelves were filled with various odds and ends, with a place of honor for the Sorting Hat, and the walls held all the portraits of past Headmasters and Headmistresses.

In the middle of the room sat a large desk. Everything was in order, for the current occupant had always despised a messy desk. It was the sign of a messy mind, and she had always favored neatness.

A clock sat on the desk, which currently showed the time to be 2:05. The meeting was supposed to begin at 2:00 precisely.

Along with order, Anneka valued punctuality. She was a very busy woman these days. Even during the summer, she had a number of matters to attend to. Interviewing and hiring staff was only of those matters. The newest potential member of her staff wasn't making a good impression.

She paced the room, black heels clicking against the stone floor. When the door finally opened, Anneka turned, her expression reminiscent of a Russian winter. "You are late."

Explain yourself was what her face said.

Roleplay Response:
Punctuality was paramount. It was inexcusable to be late for any affair, let alone for the Headmistress of the School which you were currently applying to teach at. It didn't seem to be his day. He had arrived uncomfortably early. Better that than risk being late. He had taken a stroll around the grounds, taking in the unsurprising lack of change from his youth. Everything was a wee bit smaller but that was about it.

He had gone to visit the greenhouses in which he hoped he would soon be moulding young minds and nurturing young seedlings. A wander up the route to the Ravenclaw common room and back down again. (There were more stairs than he remembered) and he puffed a little as he reached door to the Headmistresses office. Taking it at a run had been a bad idea. He smoothed his unruly hair to no avail and took a moment to catch his breath before giving a short sharp rap on the door and entering.

Oh my. Not good at all. At least he had a good excuse. He didn't like her tone in the least. She was clearly less than impressed. Without a moments pause he opened his palms and offered his tale in a voice filled with sincerity. "I beg your forgivness" he was still a little out of breath. "I would actually have been early, but on my way here there was a student on the..." he counted in his mind momentarily "fourth floor staircase that had unfortunately sunk through a disappearing step and had sprained his ankle quite baddly. I of course took him to the hospital wing but in doing so I left myself far too little time to get here. Again I appologise" he hoped beyond all hope that she would find his explanation placating instead of irresponsible and rash.

He could have found and alerted a nearby professor but it had never occured to him to leave the child alone and in pain to deligate the responsibility to someone else.

"I do hope you won't let this uncharacteristic lack of punctuality reflect upon my application" he took another breath, calmed completely now. "I assure you it is not an occurance that I intend to have happen again". All he could do now was wait to see whether this interview was at all salvagable. Damn vanishing stairs.

In addition to posting a completed application in this forum, we also ask that you submit a PM to Anneka Ivanova with details of your class and with the lesson plans for that class (include at least a minimum of 4 lessons). Also, please be sure to check the Available Positions thread located in this forum to make sure the class you want is available before applying.

Roleplay:
You come across one of these posts on the site. Please select one & reply as your character:
The snow had been falling steadily all morning and it didn't look like it was going to stop any time soon. Joshua Campbell scrunched his face up in a frown as he lifted his gaze to look to the sky. Snow. It really was quite a bother.

And it certainly didn't make it better that Diagon Alley seemed to be getting more and more crowded. Joshua sighed and pointed his wand at the large box that was currently placed on the doorstep of his shop. He had to get going. He had an order to deliver.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" The elderly man muttered and watched the box hover in the air for a moment. Honestly, did St. Mungo's really need that much tinsel? And with glitter of all things? He sighed again. If it hadn't been for the rather convincing stamp on the order, he would have been likely to believe it had been a prank by one of those orphaned rascals living up there.

Oh well, there was no point in waiting. Joshua deftly stirred the box down the doorstep and out onto the street, carefully levitating it above the heads of the crowd.

"Coming through! Coming through!" His voice sounded over the chatter of the crowd. "Keep out! Move ahead! Go on!" This was going way too slow. People were in the way and walking like they had all day! He huffed. Luckily the road was down hill.

"Coming through! Coming th--- arrrgh!" Joshua let out a loud shout as his feet suddenly slipped in the snow and sent him, the box, and several long strands of tinsel tumbling into the person who had been walking in front of him.

"For Merlin's sake!" Joshua muttered angrily as he hurried to his feet again, red and gold tinsel now decorating his black coat. "I am so sorry! This blasted snow!" He looked apologetic at the person he had crashed into.

Roleplay Response:
The highstreet was really no place to be right now. Sat in front of the fire sipping on a mug of steaming black coffee would be far preferable. Still...christmas presents needed to be bought. A strange tradition that he both loathed and loved at the same time. Darlene loved presents and seeing her face light up every year was a job unparallelled. She always loved whatever he gave her no matter what it was.

The rest of his family on the other hand. He never knew what to give any of them. He usually settled for practical presents. Socks. Books. Gift cards for shops he knew held necessities. Not that money was ever tights, but what else was there?

It wasnt just the presents either. The sitting around and trying to be interested in their dull lives was almost too much to bare. He spent nearly all his time with Darlene. Ma and Pa didn't complain, it gave them a break, and Sophia never bothered with Darl anyway.

Ah christmas. What a
joyful time it was.

He stopped for a moment to look at his list. He liked lists. They were organised and easily sorted. He needed to stop by Meg's owls. Pi needed some treats. He was running low (and getting fat). Trystan needed to start sending more letters, or his owl would feel the affects of it. If only Darleen could write back.

He nudged his nose with a finger, taking care of an itch subconsciously, totally unaware of the people and noise around him. He made a move to begin walking in the right direction.

Sparkly pain.

Something rather large had hit him square in the face, an edge of the thing hitting the bridge of his nose and causing him a moment of sharp pain, which was now past. The more pressing matter at hand was that he seemed to have been instantaneously transformed into a human christmas tree.

There was a place for glitter, but Trystan feared that place was
not his nose. The light danced, reflecting from the tiny particles adorning his face. No pain now. Just sparkles.

"Brilliant" he let out a low sigh and cast his gaze to the man in front of him making his appology. Trystan waved a hand casually. "Of course, of course. Accidental of course" He unwrapped a rather long strand of tinsel that had wrapped around his shoulders like a scarf and bent to place it back into the box, before holding the offending object out to the man in front of him. "No harm done, Ill just have to be more festive for the day is all".

He exhaled sharply and unexpectedly from his nose, sending a flurry of yet more glitter towards the snow beneath his feet. The old man needed to take the box so he could go and clean himself up. He was most certainly not going to wander the length of Diagon looking like north pole reject.
