Application for Hogwarts School

→ CHARACTER INFORMATION.
Name: Thalia Brookes

Birthday: August 11

Hometown: Conrad, Montana, United States of America

Bloodline: Muggleborn

Magical Strength (pick one): Divination

Magical Weakness (pick one): Transfiguration

Year (pick two): First (preferred), Second

Biography: Thalia was born in Conrad, Montana, to two Muggles who ran a small farm. She was their second child, born four years after a sturdy blonde boy. Thalia had far from a luxurious childhood, but was very happy with her loving parents and older brother, whom she worshipped. From a very young age she started helping out on the farm, quickly proving herself to be a fast learner and a hard worker with a natural affinity for caring for and bonding with the animals. She seemed like a fairly ordinary child until she was nine years old.

Thalia insisted on staying out in the barn one night, repeatedly telling her parents that something bad was going to happen. Dismissing her fears, her parents made her come inside and promised her that everything would be fine. During the night, a violent lightning storm caused a fire on the family’s property, quickly spreading to the main barn. The parents only awoke after the building was mostly ablaze, and found Thalia leading the last animal to safety. The young witch had snuck out after her parents had fallen asleep, started leading out the animals before the fire had started, and continued going back until she had gotten them all out. Her parents were horrified by how easily she could have been killed, and rushed to comfort the solemn Thalia, who only said, “I tried to tell you something bad was going to happen.”

More signs of her magical ability quickly appeared, and though her parents were first incredulous, they accepted it fairly quickly, wanting nothing more than their daughter’s happiness. Her brother, though at first envious, loved his younger sister too much to hold a grudge for long, and he and Thalia’s bond became stronger than ever. The family managed to get in contact with the wizarding community, and quickly learned of Hogwarts. Thalia couldn’t wait to finally meet other witches and wizards, though she knew she would desperately miss her family and the farm.

→ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
Note: This section is optional, and is up to you to complete.

House Request: Gryffindor

Personality: Thalia is very friendly and open-minded, always eager to make new friends. She dislikes bullying and gossiping, and will often stand up for the underdog. She can be sarcastic and likes to tease, but she is very rarely intentionally cruel. Though she can seem difficult to offend, inwardly she is highly sensitive and people-pleaser, though she won’t hesitate to stand up for her beliefs. She loves animals and being outdoors, and prefers hands-on learning over book learning. She is very curious, and smarter and more observant than most people think, but always tries to avoid appearing as a show-off.

Appearance: Thalia is of average height for her age, and her build is slender, but strong. She has shoulder-length, wavy brunette hair, dark prominent eyebrows, and hazel eyes with long lashes. She has clear, fair skin that has been sunburnt so often in the past that it now seems immune to it. Beyond staying (fairly) clean, Thalia cares very little about her appearance. She almost always wears her hair loose and wild, though sometimes she pulls her bangs back to keep them out of her eyes. She has an American accent.

Thalia was leaning with her back pressed against a wall in the Great Hall, watching the chaos with a mix of annoyance and amusement. She never had really understood the lure of Quidditch. Though she had to admit that it could be fun to be caught up in the crowd’s excitement, screaming until her voice was hoarse as she cheered on her House’s team. Even though she didn’t fully understand the game. It was difficult enough to keep up with a football match at home, and that only had one ball. She winced as the winners started chanting, the noise of the Hall starting to get to her. Covering her ears, she quickly pulled away from the wall and headed to the Great Hall’s entrance, sighing with relief as she reached a quieter hall.

She turned a corner to come upon a muddy boy in Quidditch robes, who suddenly whirled around, his eyes bright with tears. "WHAT! Haven't you ever seen a loser before? Why don't you just take a picture!” Thalia stopped, blinking at him in surprise. Realization dawned on her face as she remembered something the other students had been talking about, a player whose missed shot had lost the game. Her face softened briefly, before she gave James a friendly smile. “Hey, you played today, right? I’m so jealous. I wish I could be that brave, playing in front of everyone.” She stepped closer to James, her voice taking on conspiratorial tone. “Y’know, half of the students here would be too afraid to even get on a broom with that many people watching, much less try to take such a daring shot. So missing it or not, you’re already ahead of most of them.” Not giving James much of a chance to respond, she gave him one last smile before continuing down the hall. She didn’t really know James all that well, but she hoped she had cheered him up a little, at any rate.

Dear Miss Brookes,

Thank you for your application to Hogwarts. Everything looks good, except there are a few things we need to go over before Thalia can be accepted.

First of all, when Thalia was nine years old she would have been in 1938-1939, which would have been a time after an event that in out of character discussions we call the Time Warp. Icly, this means that on the stroke of midnight of January 1st, 1937 all muggles that were known seemed to have disappeared. Because of this phenomenon, Thalia would not have her parents around (or her brother if he was also not a wizard). More information on the Time Warp can be read here. If you can please consider this and somehow incorporate it into her bio this would help us see her as a character better.

Another thing that I need to point out is your rp response. It is good that you're interacting with James, but having her walking away does not really give much for James to do or say in response. This is supposed to be an example of a post on a board, so that we can see how you'd be able to help move the story along. If you could please edit your response so that it gives James a chance to reply that would be great.

Please post your edited profile as a reply to this topic.

Thank you,
Kristoffer Carlisle

Thank you for your edits, your profile looks great. Just forgot to ask one thing, and that is: why did Thalia go to Hogwarts?

We have a list of Wizarding schools in our FAQ page, which lists an American School that she could have attended. Why did her mother decide to send her to Hogwarts rather than Salem?

If you can answer that in your bio by editing it in (no need to repost it), then we will go ahead and accept your application.

Thank you, and sorry for the inconvienence.

Her mother had completed her schooling at Hogwarts shortly before moving to Montana, and had loved it so much that she decided to send Thalia overseas to attend. Knowing none of her extended family, as the proud Purebloods had shunned her mother after she had married a Muggle, Thalia couldn’t wait to finally meet other young witches and wizards, though she knew she would desperately miss her loving mother and the farm.
